Apple Month Warmth

DSC00201

Adam and I are trying to use every last bit of warmth from the summer and we spent the weekend doing city things and walking our hearts out.  Also eating dessert daily, a habit that we reeeeally need to put the kibosh on once we’re hibernating through winter.

Saturday we took the train into the city and walked 30+ blocks up through Central Park.

DSC00228

DSC00230

DSC00241

We went to a few spots in the park that we hadn’t ever seen before, which was fun.  But the way back to the train we did take the straight route down Lexington/Madison Ave because Central Park’s “Ramble” is very fittingly named.

Sunday we were even further north – The Bronx Zoo.

DSC00296

DSC00303

DSC00304

That’s a carousal selfie.  We were there from 10 – 4, whew!

breakfast

Giant coffee from 7-11 with Almond Joy creamer.

DSC00191

The weird photo angle is because my entire desk was papered in protected health information.  Last week was crazy busy at work.  On Thursday I didn’t get more than 5 feet away from my desk until 4:30 pm.

Pb&j with green beans and apple slices.

DSC00216

With cold brew from Caffeino, a cute coffee spot in Astoria.

DSC00222

The coffee was roasty and smooth and the shop is right along the drive to our train so you’ll definitely be seeing that cup again.

Cold brew with chocolate milk.

DSC00294

Meh, to both parts.

lunch

Packed lunch for work.  Chobani cinnamon pear yogurt with pomegranate seeds and Heritage Flakes.

DSC00188

Plus an apple that I picked myself!  Our orchard haul has been quite tasty.  The yogurt was only ok though, not a flavor I would buy again.

Packed lunch for the zoo.  Turkey sandwiches with carrots and applesauce.

DSC00288

Plus we bought iced coffee, of course.

A trip to Bluestone Lane’s Upper East Side location – an Austrian coffee spot housed in a gorgeous church.

DSC00248

DSC00259

We got a flat white and an Aussie iced coffee and both were thick and creamy and amazing.

DSC00253

And split an avocado smash.

DSC00254

DSC00245

Yum.  Amazingly, this was the first time either of us had tried avocado toast.

Dessert was a mini sundae from Sprinkles.

DSC00225

Salted caramel ice cream and marshmallow chocolate cupcake.

dinner

Roasted green beans and French bread baked with Smart Balance and light sharp cheddar.

DSC00210

Plus the last of the Coco SuperSeedz.

DSC00207

I wasn’t super hungry because I went to Four &Twenty Blackbirds with a friend after work.

DSC00204

Salted caramel apple!  With espressos that we were less impressed with than the pie.

Saturday night I made a frittata from Cooking Light.

DSC00270

It took forever because I added a million vegetables to it and I snacked while I cooked.

DSC00265

40 minutes later (the directions said 10 minutes!)…

DSC00277

Frittata stuffed with roasted zucchini, arugula, and browned mushrooms and topped with swiss and gruyere cheese and mini heirloom tomatoes.

DSC00286

Plus arugula salad dressed in honey, evoo, and lavender salt, with sharp cheddar, pecans, and pomegranate.

DSC00282

I burnt the bottom of the pie but at least after some careful trimming it was still delicious.

Sunday night we ate Chipotle bowls which I forgot to take a picture of but you’ve seen an embarrassing amount of time before.  With apple ciders.

DSC00310

And unseasonable froyo.

DSC00305

Pumpkin pie yogurt with Nutella and crunchy chocolate things.  I think I’m ready for October, cold and all!

Apples And Honey

A not-so-fun weekend moment was somehow deleting half of my photos when I went to upload them.  Here were some of the yummy moments…

Tacoway Beach at Rockaway Beach.

DSC00025

I got a fish taco with guac.

DSC00028

And we went down the road to Connolly’s Pub for frozen piña coladas.

DSC00029

Best frozen drink we’ve ever had.

Meatball Shop.

DSC00041

DSC00042

This chicken sandwich was good but not as good as the next one.

BBQ at The Smoke Joint.

DSC00003

I got a pulled chicken sandwich that I smothered in North Carolina-style bbq sauce.  Their cole slaw is amazing; sweet and tangy.

Kale salad from Pork Slope.

DSC00009

This was the junk food of kale salads – greens smothered in “Srirancha” dressing with cheddar cheese and housemade potato chip crumbles.

Apples and Honey for Rosh Hashanah.

DSC00012

Fage 2% Greek yogurt + apples cooked with cinnamon and butter + honey + chia seeds + salted caramel apple granola.

We made the ubiquitous (<– for good reason!) toffee candy.

DSC00017

I used graham crackers instead of saltines and added pretzels and pecans.

DSC00020

So freaking good.

Barcade for pumpkin beer and many, many rounds of Q-Bert and Tapper.  I made it to level three on both despite numerous attempts to go further.

DSC00037

This weekend also involved several games of Jenga and darts.  I was better at both than I would have expected!

DSC00033

Lunch N Oats

breakfast

This week’s coffee (a mix of Community Coffee and Brooklyn Roasting Co) was iced with milk (a mix of vanilla almond milk and skim).  Sweetened with honey – meh.

DSC09104

And maple – yum!

DSC09186

And paired with watermelon juice.

DSC09128

And an apple.

DSC09156

lunch

2% Lingonberry Strawberry Siggi’s with chopped apricot and plum and Nature’s Path Heritage Flakes.

DSC09100

The rest of the week was all about the oats.

Chocolate chip oats with peanut butter and diced apricot stirred in.  Plus goats milk maple caramels on the side.

DSC09152

Coconut maple oats with purple rose plums(!!) and chocolate pumpkin seeds.

DSC09122

And oats from home.  With freeze-dried strawberries, chia seeds, chocolate covered cocoa nibs, and chocolate chunks.

DSC09183

snack

Delicious nougat bar my parents bought me at BRKLYN Larder.  Adam bought me Luxardo cherries for my birthday there too and I am so excited to start using them.

DSC09115

Iced Americano with cream.

DSC09161

Herbed turkey and Havarti roll-up.

DSC09163

I ate several handfuls of prunes this week.  The snack situation was getting pretty bleak.

DSC09114

But then we bought the new Reuben lays.

DSC09168

It was amazing, if you were blindfolded you still would totally taste rye bread and thousand island dressing.  If they were kettle chips instead of the flimsy regular kind they’d be my new favorite.

dinner

Leftovers from Sunday.  Whole-wheat penne topped with sautéed turkey, mushrooms, and onions in marinara sauce.

DSC09110

Eaten cold, out of the Tupperware, in front of the open fridge.  It’s kind of crazy how classy I am.

The next night really was pretty snazzy though.

DSC09137

Lemon Pepper Baked Shrimp with shredded Brussels sprouts and barely.

DSC09141

Recipe HERE, this cooks in less than 30 minutes.

Then we had big salads with red curry turkey burgers on top.

DSC09172

Arugula blend topped with TJ’s Asian Sesame Vinaigrette, sliced cucumber, and baked shredded Brussels sprouts and broccoli.  Two notes – 1) baking the shredded B sprouts is my new favorite thing; 2) I bought TJ’s Thai-style chili and lime cashews to put on the salads and they were so spicy even I couldn’t eat them.

DSC09175

The patties were lean ground turkey with tons of parsley and green onions, soy sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, red curry paste, and ground ginger.  Cooked in coconut oil.

DSC09178

We were supposed to have this meal two nights in a row but we snacked on the 1st round of patties while we assembled the salads (and the dog ate an entire patty that fell on the ground!) and there ended up only being enough leftovers for one.  Really I won out though because this chile rellano from TJ’s was darn good.

DSC09189

Best frozen meal ever.

Finish this thought – this weekend I am excited to…

Weekend Highlights

This “peanut butter and jelly” yogurt bowl I brought to work was legit.

DSC09044

Plain Greek yogurt with KIND peanut butter granola, grapes, chia seeds, peanut butter, and a drizzle of maple syrup.  Peanut butter in yogurt is so good!

We made deviled eggs that were only ok.

DSC09067

And cookies that were fantastic.

DSC09063

Number 2 pencil’s recipe with chocolate-covered pretzels crumbled in.

Plus watermelon cocktails.

DSC09086

DSC09093

Woo-hoo!  We’ve got to squeeze the last out of summer.

I made big bowls of pasta with red sauce.

DSC09097

Whole-wheat rotini topped with ground turkey cooked with tons of sautéed mushrooms and onion and TJ’s marinara.

This was the best meal of the weekend though.

DSC09073

Scrambled eggs with corn and leftover bbq collards.

DSC09079

Plus buttered burnt toasted baguette.

DSC09081

Yum!

My Year Is Off To A Good Start

enjoyed all week

Coffees.  Also naps.

DSC09010

Apparently my parents wore us out; I had a to take a nap before I could make dinner the first three nights of the week.

Diet chocolate soda from Polar.

DSC09013

I know it sounds a little strange but we were fans.

Our leftovers from The Smith.  Eaten cold while standing in front of the open fridge.

DSC08965

DSC08979

My mac and cheese was fantastic leftover and so was my mom’s Mexican corn.

A big box of free samples {free as in provided free of charge / no other compensation for this post / yada, yada } from Super Seedz.

DSC08970

I wouldn’t have thought of pumpkin seeds as a favorite of mine but I’ve loved all of the flavors we’ve tried so far.  Flavor options include: Really Naked, Sea Salt, Cinnamon & Sugar, Coco Joe, Tomato Italiano, Curious Curry, Somewhat Spicy and Super Spicy.  They pack a nutritional punch – see the infographic (provided by the company) below – and Super Seedz are allergen friendly – peanut-free, tree nut-free, egg-free, dairy-free, fish-free, shellfish-free, soy-free and made with gluten-free ingredients.

SuperSeedz_5x7Infographic_FINAL

breakfast

After we dropped my parents at the airport on Monday, Adam and I went on a doughnut(plant) and coffee date before work.  Because apparently we hadn’t eaten enough crap over my birthday weekend.

DSC08950

My strawberry-filled vanilla got two thumbs up.

DSC08954

As did my maple latte from Gorilla.

Coco pumpkin seeds and cold-pressed watermelon juice.

DSC08976

TJ’s came through on this juice, it was wonderfully refreshing.

Chocolate-cherry smoothie.

DSC09004

Vanilla almond milk with coco powder, frozen cherries, and dates.  I enjoyed this combo and want to make it again soon.

Snack plate.

DSC09018

A cheese stick, cinnamon sugar pumpkin seeds, and a medley of grapes.

lunch

Chocolate chip cookie oats.

DSC08960

With an apple and coco pumpkin seeds.

Sweet and spicy tuna salad.

DSC08999

With grapes and cinnamon sugar pumpkin seeds.

I didn’t have to provide my own lunch the rest of the week!  I attended a lunch-and-learn on malnutrition in surgical patients on Tuesday.

20150728_121121

They gave us education, salad, and yummy sandwiches with hummus and roasted eggplant.  And I mainlined coffee (with tons of milk and cream) when I got back to my desk.

20150728_145646

On Thursday the hospital threw an employee appreciation bbq.

20150730_122526

Very sweet!

dinner

Pizza, pizza.

DSC08983

DSC08991

We used TJ’s frozen crusts and were so impressed with how they turned out.  Topped with marinara, mozzarella, and tons of garlic and onion sautéed mushrooms.

DSC08995

Plus super simple salads on the side.

DSC08993

Just arugula blend with ranch dressing.  They were a bit depressing.  But we also had beer.

DSC08986

I carried this Southern Tier Compass all the way back home from Buffalo but unfortunately it was a bit hoppy for our tastes.

Burger night.

DSC09021

I made my Buffalo Blue Bean Burgers.  They don’t look like much but this is one of my best recipes!

DSC09033

With a trio of roasted veggies: Brussels sprouts, green beans, and broccoli.

DSC09029

Served with maple bacon kettle chips, aka my favorite chips because they are the best chips of all time.

DSC09026

They were doing a promotion and handing out mini bags at my railroad station and it was very exciting.

Last night I met up with a girlfriend for dinner in Brooklyn.  We checked out Elbow Room, the mac and cheese window at Morgan’s BBQ.

DSC09036

Milk stout.

DSC09039

Old School Mac – NY state sharp cheddar, béchamel, and garlic breadcrumbs.

DSC09042

With collard greens that were spicy and vegetarian.  Dinner was good but dessert was better.

DSC09034

Salted crack caramel and honey peanut butter ice creams from Ample Hills.  But they were supposed to have key lime pie ice cream available and they didn’t so now I need to go back immediately and it’s a problem.

Reunited And It Feels So Good

I had an absolute blast in Buffalo but this past week I have been so freaking excited to be home with my boys.  I usually miss them by the end of my workday so a long weekend away feels like an eternity.  I am lucky to have a husband and dachshund who are both so great! {/sap}

breakfast

Black and white coffee.

DSC08731

Or Vanilla Chameleon Cold Brew with chocolate milk and an apple on the side.

Cereal with milk.  And blueberries.

DSC08757

Plus Guava Mandarin Polar seltzer.

DSC08752

I lugged that back from Wegman’s in Buffalo and it was so worth it.

Coffee-eee-eee.

DSC08774

DSC08776

Always worth it.  I’d be lying if I said my birthday drink freebie wasn’t bringing me a lot of anticipatory joy.

lunch

Asian-ish.

DSC08737

Microwave noodles and roasted seaweed.

Oatmeal bowl.

DSC08761

Chai-spiced oats from Target with maple almond butter on top and 2 black pluots on the side.

Yogurt bowl.

DSC08770

Vanilla Skyr Icelandic yogurt with blueberries, KIND peanut butter granola, and chia seeds.  This was so tasty; I need more of that yogurt immediately.

dinner

Adam was at the hospital when I got home on Sunday so we had to turn Monday into date night.  He picked me up at work and came bearing red velvet cupcakes.

DSC08739

We went to dinner at East Wind Snack Shop by Prospect Park.

DSC08745

We came in for the foie gras bao, which ended up being only ok.  For the cheap price the amount of foie gras was very fair, but I would have rather paid a bit more and gotten a better meat-to-bun ratio.

DSC08750

But my Happy Buddha Vegetables were yummy.

DSC08748

They describe this dish as “jasmine rice, fermented tofu, seasoning, and all sorts of vegetables.” I’m not sure what the green sauce was but it was worth going back for.  Then we walked to the theatre (our movie theatre) to see “Ant-Man.”  The character development was weak but the movie was still hilarious so we’re glad we went.

I didn’t have time to do a real grocery trip this week so the following two nights were admittedly a little weak.  This meal was fine but it’s not winning any prizes.

DSC08764

Cheez-its, leftover roasted veggies that Adam made last week, and a turkey and Havarti cheese sandwich.

This meal was a bit better.  It definitely tasted good.

DSC08781

We needed a carbohydrate side so we had beer!  Tusker is one of my all-time favorite beers, and pretty much the only lager I enjoy.

DSC08787

With roasted veggies – asparagus, okra, and zucchini – with Applegate chicken nuggets.

DSC08785

A copious amount of ketchup was added after I took that picture.

My parents come to visit tomorrow.  And Friday is my birthday.  I’m old, but excited!

Buffalove

This weekend some friends and I traveled (many hours!) back to Buffalo for a quick visit.  It was fantabulous!  We got lucky with good weather, caught up with great friends, and hit up almost every place that we’d been missing.  We didn’t take even a single group photo because apparently we’re old, but a good time was had by all.

DSC08716

I didn’t get any people pictures and I didn’t take many food shots either.  Here are a few things I did capture…

Mike’s sandwich – a toasted bagel with cheese, cream cheese, and a fried egg – at SPoT Coffee.

DSC08714

Plus we got coffee there every morning because it was roasty and delicious.  Clearly I can get amazing coffee in NYC but SPoT is still one of the main places I miss.

Green juice at Ashker’s.

DSC08720

Spinach, kale, cucumber, pineapple, and mint.

Drinks at Blue Monk which now offers 5 oz pours.

IMG_20150718_170544

Shown is a very tasty Downeast Cider.

Crepes at Sweetness 7.

20150719_102637

Mine was topped with syrup and a fried egg.

Hot bar at Wegman’s, of course.

DSC08723

We actually went to Wegman’s twice!

We also went to the Co-op, walked up and down Elmwood Ave, and did a round of lemon drop shots for my upcoming birthday

20150718_192341

Williamsburg To Washington Square Park

Oh my goodness, what a great weekend!  Adam and I have been making the most of the summer days, and then some.  This weekend we walked around Williamsburg, across the bridge, up to and around Washington Square Park, and back, to the tune of 10+ miles in one afternoon!

DSC08179

DSC08177

DSC08207

DSC08188

DSC08185

When we weren’t moving this weekend, we were eating.  Here are some of the highlights…

A fancy-schmancy yogurt bowl.  2% Plum Chobani with two varieties of pluot and a dollop of fresh whipped cream.

DSC08232

The cream was part of a homemade ice cream undertaking (look for more details – and a giveaway! – on Wednesday).

Coffee at Sweetleaf, a Rocket Fuel.

DSC08212

Aka cold brew with milk, maple, and chicory.  Chicory blended iced coffees are definitely going to play a big role in my summer.

Espresso and macarons at Bakeshop by Woops.

DSC08170

DSC08163

Kids, this place was so freaking cute.  And our cookies were amazing, chocolate and lavender chocolate.

Honey sesame soy milk box.

DSC08200

Adam and I tried to split this but the minute I handed it over to him he guzzled the rest of it down!

Cherry Cola Tic-Tacs.

DSC08189

I am incapable of turning down a cherry cola flavored item.  Fun fact – the last two photos were not actually taken in front of the same wall, I just seek out brick whenever I have the option for a photo.

Rice bowls at Korilla.  Korilla is basically an Asian Chipotle, but it is at least fifteen times more fantastic.

DSC08206

My bowl had sticky rice, the most amazing gochujang marinated chicken, sweet corn and snap peas, cheese, tons of red kimchi, and spicy but sweet Korean BBQ sauce.  Adam’s rice had bacon and kimchi in it and we were both swooning.

We tried the new limited-time offerings at Ample Hills.

DSC08150

DSC08155

The pride month flavor was yummy but we had to throw out the sandwich.  I think that Ample Hills generally makes the best ice cream on Earth but those soggy cookies were truly inedible.

A cone from Sundaes and Cones.

DSC08197

Lavender and black sesame were both great; those are flavors that could be kind of overwhelming but they were sweet and light yet still identifiable.

A quick red curry at home.

DSC08214

Rice noodles on the bottom // sautéed bok choy, white mushrooms and straw mushrooms, sweet onion and green onion, and sweet red pepper // sprouted tofu cubes roasted with lime, sugar, Sriracha, and liquid smoke // and red curry sauce with lime, light coconut milk, fish sauce, and minced garlic and ginger.

DSC08221

We both typically say that we don’t like red curries but we loved this so we should give the real version another chance.

Sandwich night on my lonesome while Adam was at work.

DSC08262

I toasted sourdough slices in the oven with Smart Balance Light and pepperjack and sharp cheddar cheese then sandwiched them around canola oil mayo and Applegate Smoked Sliced Turkey.

DSC08268

With roasted green beans on the side.

DSC08265

How are green beans – roasted with cooking spray and salt – so flipping buttery?!

Dinner at The Smoke Joint, our new favorite bbq spot.

DSC08141

They have Mother’s Milk at the bar, which wins them points.  Adam’s strawberry vanilla bourbon limeade wasn’t bad either.

DSC08138

Their juicy, tender, chopped bbq chicken comes with a side of pickles and spicy cole slaw.

DSC08146

And their smoky collard greens are meatless, so I got to try real bbq collards for the first time in my life.

DSC08149

I loved them!

If this upcoming week is half as good as my weekend I’ll be all set 🙂
