Open Toasted Sesame

Highlights from the week…

IMG_7958

Lemon shortbread Greek yogurt with a Jaffa mandarin and a coconut seltzer.

IMG_7930

Coconut Chobani with Heritage Flakes and a sumo mandarin and a lemon seltzer.

IMG_7975

Cookie butter cotton candy.

IMG_7964

Sandwich night.  Mock beef shaved tofu sauteed with red bell pepper and bbq sauce / served on a brioche bun / with mayo and provolone.  Plus broccoli.

IMG_7941

Barley bowls.  Barley / roasted zucchini / crumbled seaweed snacks / canned mackerel and smoked sardines mashed together with some mayonnaise / Sriracha and gojuchang on top.

IMG_7984

A knock-your-socks-off good dinner date at Gristmill.

IMG_7988

The Ali Baba cocktail = gin, lemon, cream, egg white, and toasted sesame.

IMG_8005

I went with the pre-fix option because I wanted too many things to choose!

IMG_7994

Local greens salad with carrot, watermelon radish, and toasted sesame vinaigrette.  This was delicious af and while we were eating it the owner came by and excitedly told us about sourcing his greens, so that was fun.

IMG_8007

Chicken liver mousse with bread crackers, concord grape jam, and dulce de leche.

IMG_8000

Best plain cheese pizza I’ve ever eaten.  <– Gristmill is famous for their wood-fired oven.

IMG_8014

Plus we had an affogato and that thing lurking in the back is the best chocolate cake I’ve ever eaten with caramelized white chocolate ganache and sourdough pretzel crumbs.

IMG_8019

I work the weekend so I’m off today, woo hoo!

Well There Goes Your Social Life

Another New York snowstorm?!  Can it be Spring already??!  I shouldn’t complain, Adam and I both were off from work on Wednesday and I already drink enough coffee to power a small city so it’s not like the few minutes I had to wake up earlier on Thursday to deal with the snow were a big deal. <– I should note that I literally mean that I only need a few extra minutes, I don’t have to dig out my own car because I’m married to the kindest man on earth!

Highlight bites this week…

Coffee, coffee!  Cafe Bustelo.

IMG_7792

Cold brew with coconut palm sugar (and skim milk).

IMG_7757

Protein cookie and a sumo.

IMG_7749

Coffee Greek yogurt with coconut butter, red walnuts, and granola, plus a Pink Lady apple on the side.  The coconut/coffee combo is 10/10.

IMG_7802

These 7-11 bites are super cute, and I love anything that tastes like cake batter.

IMG_7846

It seemed like half of Queens had closed up shop on Wednesday but Adam and I still managed to find a good lunch.  Chicken and udon soup.

IMG_7813

With an Oreo milk tea with pudding.

IMG_7805

Plus we went to Coffee Factory for a ridiculously adorned coffee shave ice.

IMG_7824

It’s a testament to how good Stumptown is that I was equally excited about my iced latte.

IMG_7820

Do you remember last year when I declared that the spring holidays deserve theme flavors too?  Easter gets lemon, coconut, and anything in the shape of an egg!

IMG_7648

I snacked on coconut shortbread cookies and candied lemon slices to welcome the first day of Spring.

IMG_7762

The Trader Joe’s eggs were cute, but the chocolate to caramel ratio was too large for my liking.  I much prefer a thinner, softer shell, so the Godiva eggs were absolutely perfect.

IMG_7667

Godiva actually sent me the eggstra special chocolates to review on the blog {I received no additional compensation / all opinions are my own}.  The box includes solid milk chocolate, dark chocolate ganache (3rd favorite), dark chocolate with raspberry, milk chocolate with almond butter (my favorite), and milk chocolate caramel (2nd favorite).  There’s 60 calories per egg, which feels more than fair because these are definitely a two-to-three-bite candy.

IMG_7654

Important note – Godiva also has an assorted gift-box special for Spring that includes both cookie dough truffles and white chocolate pralines – among other flavors – and I’m having a very hard time not buying it immediately.

My dinners were darn impressive this week.  Spicy Cajun shrimp pasta bowls on whole wheat linguine with tons of roasted zucchini and sun-dried tomato.

IMG_7784

Homemade turkey Reuben burgers / roasted green beans / french fries / with ketchup and thousand island.

IMG_7777

Chicken sandwiches.  Boneless skinless breasts marinated in lemon juice, soy sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, Sriracha, fish sauce, and ginger; breaded in panko; and baked / on brioche buns / with mayo and provolone.

IMG_7832

Plus we had sauteed bok choy and leeks on the side.

IMG_7843

And buttermilk and chive chips while I cooked.

IMG_7826

Last night a girlfriend and I went on a balls tasting tour of the Lower East Side for dinner.  Boba Guys for Hong Kong milk tea with tapioca balls and almond jelly.

IMG_7850

Meatball Shop for chicken meatballs with pesto.  Plus a Dead Flowers & Red Bottoms cocktail – mezcal, tequila, lime, honey, and hibiscus.

IMG_7856

p.s. who is 1990’s enough to get the joke in my title??

And Now My Favorite Color is Zhough

Highlights from the week…

Fancy shmancy coffee.  I cold pressed espresso roast with vanilla bean powder, brown sugar, and clove.

IMG_7575

Honestly though, my current favorite-favorite combo is espresso, ice, and chocolate milk.

IMG_7536

Milkadamia sent me a box for review [no cash was exchanged, all opinions are my own, yadda yadda].  Their macadamia nut milk is vegan, dairy-free, soy-free, and gluten-free.  The unsweetened vanilla has 50 calories, 1 gram of protein, and zero grams of sugar (1 gram carbohydrate) per 8 oz serving.  The milk has almost no flavor, but that is pretty much what I’m looking for in my nut milks because I want them to make my coffee creamy without distracting from the coffee taste.  The unsweetened vanilla went perfectly with a cup of iced coffee this week, no clumping or separation to be found.

IMG_7518

I also used it in a smoothie with frozen blueberries and coconut chunks, vanilla, maple, and chia seeds.

IMG_7534

My packed work eats were all about the Sumo mandarin and plain Greek yogurt combo.  With maple or granola.

IMG_7547

IMG_7614

Snack attack.  Peanut butter puffs.

IMG_7585

Mexican marshmallow shortbread cookies.

IMG_7544

Super sour soda and cola hard candies.

IMG_7583

Mini sundae from Van Leeuwen.  Cookies and cream topped with hot fudge, almond brittle, and sprinkles.

IMG_7606

IMG_7608

All of our dinners this week had a Middle Eastern bent, thanks to lots of zhough and copious amounts of olive oil.  Like scrambled egg pita sandwiches.  Scrambled eggs / sauteed orange bell pepper and red onion / whole wheat pita / zhough.  With roasted zucchini.

IMG_7590

Pita chip nachos!  Sharp cheddar / red onion and cucumber / marinated chickpeas with lemon juice, olive oil, fresh parsley, oregano, cayenne, and paprika / zhough and tzatziki.

IMG_7561

Veggie bowls.  Sauteed red onion, yellow bell pepper, and roasted eggplant / tomato sauce / marinated chickpeas / zhough and tzatziki / fried egg.

IMG_7628

Also pizza.  Is there a better food on the planet than buffalo chicken pizza??

IMG_7617

It’s almost the weekend!  Who has green beer on their Saturday agenda?

Charcoal And Cheez-its

IMG_7336

From this weekend I have some exceptional highlights and some cautionary tales…

I am a marketer’s dream – I’ll buy pretty much anything that says limited edition; it’s not a lifestyle I can really recommend, as both of these coffees were just terrible!

IMG_7292

IMG_7298

This coffee shop, on the other hand, was worth the hype.

IMG_7313

Saltwater Cafe gave me a very tasty charcoal vanilla chai latte.

IMG_7315

Other Lower East Side spots that redefine hypeworthy?  Ice & Vice and Baohaus.  I had an epic cup of Milk con Leche with goat milk cajeta and kaya jam.

IMG_7329

And an Uncle Jesse Bao and a Spiceland Bao – fried tofu and spicy fried chicken with pickled cabbage, crushed peanuts, Taiwanese red sugar, and cilantro.  Plus housemade lemonade.

IMG_7317

Representing from the frozen section, Trader Joe’s scallion pancakes are damn good.  With Sriracha on top and yellow bell pepper on the side.

IMG_7343

And one night I cooked a great plate of Cheez-it crusted chicken tenders with homemade cole slaw.

IMG_7306

P.S.  CW Pencil Enterprise looks like what the inside of my soul looks like.

IMG_7321

IMG_7327

Hope everyone enjoys their week!

Fresh On The Blog

Gotta love a three day weekend!  I don’t work today (hence the late post) and my plans include the dog, my bed, and The Office, the end.

My Friday, Saturday, Sunday were all pretty great too.  Friday, Adam drove me into work so we had before-work breakfast date and after-work dinner date (plus we basically consider the time driving in the car to be a date too!).  Saturday, I met up with girlfriends for brunch and discovered that Bayside, Queens – which is about 10 minutes from my house – is actually kind of great.  And Sunday, we had friends in from out of town and we got to show them the magic of Grand Central Whispering Gallery; plus the magic of coffee from Cafe Grumpy!

highlights…

Apertif.  I had a croque canard sandwich with duck rillettes, apple, brie, and béchamel.

IMG_20180217_123702_501

F.O.B.  A newish Filipino spot in Cobble Hill people have been (rightly) raving about.

IMG_7199

IMG_7201

We got so much good food!  Corn bibingka – rice cake with farmers cheese, kesong puti, and coconut butter.

IMG_7208

Overnight chicken adobo and pechay – sautéed Chinese cabbage with chili and garlic.

IMG_7209

And Halo Halo – shaved ice with nata de coco, red beans, tapioca, mango, jackfruit, and ube ice cream!

IMG_7218

French Workshop.  We split something with white chocolate mousse, and hazelnuts, and milk chocolate ganache but there were about a million other things that looked good too.

IMG_7223

Joyce Bakeshop.  We’ve decided that we don’t love their coffee, but their kouign amann is my all-time favorite pastry.  Seriously, I like it more than filled croissants from Union Fair and cronuts from Dominique Ansel, and that bar is set pretty damn high.

IMG_7192

Kame Ramen in Nomad.  I had spicy chicken miso with sesame oil and a soft boiled egg.

IMG_20180218_133342_125 (1)

I did manage to cook one meal at home – loaded baked potato casserole / shredded chicken with bbq sauce / spinach salad with pomegranate, marcona almonds, and Trader Joe’s cilantro salad dressing.

IMG_7229

Have a great week!

IMG_7194

Super

Did all my American readers eat wings and gauc and dip last night?  I don’t even watch the Super Bowl but I try not to let that get in the way of my buffalo chicken consumption.

Weekend eats highlights –

We actually had dinner reservations at Evelina last night; a little Italian place with no tv, big screen or otherwise.  I had a fun Cordelia cocktail – mezcal, malted banana, pressed lime, and Coco Lopez.

IMG_6951

We shared two yummy salads to start.  Italian radicchio with roasted grapes, almonds, Blue di bufala, and vin cotto.

IMG_6960

Roasted beets with Fuji persimmon, house smoked ricotta, and hazelnut.

IMG_6954

Sadly our entrees were disappointing.  My cacio e pepe risotto with white shrimp was a major letdown.

IMG_6963

But that meant that we ended up grabbing pizza on the way home; buffalo chicken is never a letdown!

IMG_6967

I worked the weekend so most of my food was in snack form.  Two superior combos of iced coffee and chocolate milk.

IMG_6940

IMG_6926

This citrus medley yogurt from Trader Joe’s is fantastically creamy and sweet, especially with sumo mandarin segments mixed in.

IMG_6914

Potato wedges from the cafeteria – gotta get in that blue cheese.

IMG_6932

And one morning Adam drove me into work and we went on a breakfast date at the Orwashers in the new Whole Foods 365.  Best chocolate croissant of all time!

IMG_6948

Random television musings –

  • My two favorite shows this season – The Good Place and Agents of Sheild
  • My least favorite new show – 9-1-1
  • The old show I am loving and tearing through seasons of at a disturbing clip – Cougar Town

Valentine’s freebie FYIs –

  • If you visit Godiva stores on Sunday, February 11th they’ll give you one free piece of chocolate while supplies last (no purchase required)
  • Aunt Annie’s is selling heart shaped pretzels buy-one-get-one-free on the 14th if you download their app
  • Not free and just for New Yorkers – FYI, Doughnut Plant is selling adorable rose shaped doughnuts right now and usually they have heart-shaped ones on Valentine’s

Quesadillas, Chilaquiles, And Burritos, Oh My!

As I flip from one classical musical references in my title to another in my opening line… This week these were a few of my favorite things

Favorite breakfast – This incredibly excitingly pink coconut water.

IMG_6695

One of my coffee combos – Birch Cold Brew roast with vanilla cashew milk.  <– good idea in theory but the mouthfeel and taste were both sort of “empty” to me and I ended up having to add a splash of cow’s milk.

IMG_6748

IMG_6756

Favorite yogurt bowl – Vanilla & Cinnamon Chobani with Brown Sugar Cinnamon peanut butter.  Plus a Kanzi apple.

IMG_6649

Favorite snack – an assortment of nuts and dried fruits from Trader Joe’s.

IMG_6674

Pears, persimmons, and sweetened dried lemons plus TJ’s nut and seed medley.

IMG_6666

I can’t choose one favorite dessert, they were all so good!  We were surprised by how tasty these TJ’s churro bites turned out to be.

IMG_6660

I made a batch of snack attack brownies!  This recipe, minus marshmallow, plus crushed potato chips, pretzels, and m&ms.

IMG_6704

And I was killing it in the dinner department this week.  Baked burritos – whole wheat tortillas / shredded chicken breast / sauteed onions and orange and yellow bell peppers cooked with cumin / shredded sharp cheddar cheese / TJ’s double roasted salsa.

IMG_6685

Chilaquiles, mostly from scratch.

IMG_6737

I made chips out of the whole wheat tortillas / cooked in salsa and diced tomatoes / with leftover onions and peppers / shredded chicken / lime / cheese / topped with a sunny side up egg and a dollop of plain Greek yogurt.

IMG_6742

Egg and cheese sandwiches with homemade sausage.

IMG_6713

Whole wheat hamburger buns toasted with mayonnaise / cheese / fried egg / turkey sausage made with smoked paprika, fresh sage, and maple syrup.

IMG_6721

Plus roasted green beans.

IMG_6718

And yesterday I had a late doctor’s appointment in the city so I grabbed dinner at La Esquina.  I had a ridiculously delicious chicken quesadilla with salsa verde.

IMG_6760

I am off of work today with a three-day weekend and we’ve got super fun dinner plans tonight, woo-hoo!

Cookie Monster

Friday, Friday, Friday!  How did a short week feel so long?  At least I had multiple sugar highs to carry me through.

Munk Pack sent me a sweet (but actually protein-packed) box of samples.  Munk Pack Protein Cookies contain a whopping 18 grams of plant-protein and 6 grams of fiber per cookie.  They are gluten-free, vegan, and do not contain sugar alcohols or soy.

IMG_6203

I let Adam review two flavors on his own because he’s the one whose lifestyle depends on quick, protein-packed snacks (and he’s already obsessed with Munk Pack’s oatmeal packets).  He thought double dark chocolate was good but not great and was over the moon for oatmeal raisin spice.  To quote – “5/5.  A little bit savory but not too spicy.  Firm on the outside but moist on the inside, with a good texture from the oats.  Very filling, it kept me satisfied for hours.”

IMG_6220

And personally I liked peanut butter chocolate chip but I loooooved the coconut white chip macadamia.  All of the flavors were very substantial, I actually ended up skipping lunch yesterday because I was still so satisfied from the cookie I ate for breakfast at 9!

IMG_6317

Peanut butter wasn’t necessarily a cookie-cookie but was a darn good protein bar but the coconut flavor was straight-up decadent.  It had the slightly gritty consistency of cookie dough and was one of the more delicious packaged cookies (dessert options included) I’ve ever eaten.

IMG_6533

Plus we threw a baby shower for a coworker this week and I made and ate a million desserts.  Matzoh toffee candy.

IMG_6495

Triple fudge brownies with maraschino cherries and cherry cream cheese frosting.

IMG_6520

I did eat one or two things that weren’t sweet.  Like super spicy Thai food.  I went out for lunch with a girlfriend in Astoria and had a great bowl of extra spicy pad see ew with mock duck.

IMG_6455

Plus Adam and I hung out for a bit at Gossip; love it there.

IMG_6451

Still obsessed with this Trader Joe’s seed and bean snack.

IMG_6527

It was a week of fantastic home-cooked dinners.  Like Asian-style cabbage wraps.  <– best dish of the week

IMG_6462

Red cabbage cups / ground turkey sauteed with shredded carrot, spring onion, orange and bell pepper/ crushed peanuts on top.

IMG_6473

Plus two dipping sauces – miso, lime juice, sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar, gojuchang / avocado, cilantro, fish sauce, rice vinegar, lime juice, Greek yogurt, evoo.

IMG_6480

Another night I used the leftover avocado cilantro sauce to make a killer salad.  With red cabbage, arugula, spring onion, shredded carrot, yellow bell pepper, black beans, sharp cheddar, and salty peanuts.

IMG_6552

With an assortment of global gummy candies for dessert.

IMG_6534

And another night we made loaded cheeseburger cheese fries!

IMG_6501

Waffle fries / cheese / tons of sauteed onion / mini turkey cheeseburgers / with ketchup and mayo on top.

IMG_6512

Plus broccoli slaw on the side, sauteed with rice vinegar and cream cheese.

IMG_6510

Have a happy weekend!
