The End Of The First Month Of The New Year

I’m two weeks late and about a hundred pictures short, but here, finally, is a (bi)weekly wrap up for the end of January.  I blame a bout of the cold, a string of loser dinners, and a case of the mid-winter blues for my lack of timeliness and photo-taking-enthusiasm.

Gaps aside, here were some eats from the past two weeks…

{rated within their category; i.e. the yogurt bowl is an 8 out of 10 compared with other yogurt bowls not compared other dissimilar items}

Green monster from the cafeteria.  They sometimes set up a smoothie bar at the rotating station.  I chose spinach, strawberry, mango, and coconut water.  8.5/10

dsc09313

Chocolate iced coffee.  8/10

dsc09308

Work snack – an apple and coconut caramel bar.  The score here is for the Thai Coco coconut milk drink, which was creamy and sweet.  9.5/10

dsc09304

Soursop yogurt with blueberries and vanilla granola.  8/10

dsc09324

Turkey reuben-ish sandwich from the cafeteria.  Sliced turkey, swiss cheese, pickles, spinach, and cole slaw on a whole-wheat wrap.  Plus french fries dipped in 1000 island.  6.5/10

dsc09344

Cola kombucha.  6.5/10

dsc09257

This Milka Oreo candy bar didn’t have as much cookie in it as I wanted.  6/10

dsc09253

But these TJ’s sour gummies are the best gummy candies Adam or I have ever tasted.  10/10

dsc09317

Biscuit breakfast sandwiches for dinner.  Buttermilk biscuits (<– I don’t recommend this recipe, the biscuits had no flake) / maple Sriracha mayo / smoked gouda / fried egg.  6/10

dsc09286

Pumpkin soup.  Roux, canned pumpkin, and chicken stock with sautéed onions, carrot, and maple chicken breakfast sausage on the bottom.  This didn’t turn out as well as I was expecting it to, the salt and pepper pumpkin seed brittle I sprinkled on top was by far the best component.  5/10

dsc09271

Escarole and white bean skillet with (turkey) bacon and artichoke.  7/10

dsc09294

dsc09298

Creamy turkey pasta.  Ground turkey sautéed with garlic, browned mushrooms, and oven-roasted tomatoes, tossed with sour cream, and whole-wheat pasta.  7.5/10

dsc09348

I’ve got some yummy things planned for this weekend so hopefully the next post will be slightly less lame!

Chocolate Strawberry And Banana Date

A short post for a short week; here were my top five tastes…

Snack-pack lunch at work.  Crispy broccoli, jerky(1), baby carrots, and a Cara Cara Orange.

dsc09189

I am a sucker for limited edition Oreos(2).  I always eat them by splitting two in half to make one double-stuffed cookie.

dsc09190

Homemade dinner, chicken with bbq sauce, roasted asparagus, and another killer potato(3) recipe from Serious Eats.

dsc09201

Dinner out with a friend, I finally made it to Taïm  and I loved it.  We had sandwiches(4) and smoothies(5).

img_20170118_175813_922

  1. Smoked Salmon Maple Stick from EPIC
  2. chocolate-covered strawberry limited edition Oreos
  3. cheesy onion, bacon, and potato gratin
  4. pita with balaganoush, tahini, Moroccan carrots, and pickled cabbage
  5. date, lime, banana, and soy milk

Top Ten Last Week

dsc07683

{1} Kobrick Coffee

I stepped up my espresso game with their housemade chocolate milk.  Adam and I were both swooning after every sip.

img_20161029_113134

{2} Pumpkin yogurt bowls

2% Fage with pumpkin puree and pumpkin butter, cinnamon, slivered almonds, and pumpkin spice granola.  With an Asian pear.

dsc07675

Plain Siggi’s with pumpkin x2, pumpkin spice cheerios and frosted mini wheats, and a few candy corns.  With a gingergold apple.

dsc07691

Pumpkin Chobani with cereals and another apple.

dsc07721

{3} Bobwhite Counter

Fried chicken sandwich with pickles and pimento cheese.

dsc07735

{4} Pumpkin Smoothie

We make at least one every October.  Pumpkin puree, plain Greek yogurt, cinnamon, maple syrup, and vanilla almond milk.

dsc07702

{5} Xzibit “Pimp My Ride” style Reese’s

Reese’s stuffed with Reese’s Pieces.  My peanut butter cup obsession usually does not extend beyond Justin’s minis but I am bewitched by these; the bit of crunch takes the cups to a whole new level.

dsc07692

{6} Molly’s Cupcakes

They have a whole slew of gooey stuffed cupcakes.

img_20161029_124731

Cake better was perfection!

dsc07741

{7}  Let’s Pretend This Never Happened

Unsurprisingly, Jenny Lawson (aka The Bloggess)’s 1st memoir did not disappoint.  I added her 2nd book to my Christmas list less than halfway through.

dsc07730

{8} Nachos

I turned my copycat Chipotle bowl leftovers into nachos.  Nachos > salad bowls.  Tortilla chips, cheddar cheese, black beans, corn, sautéed onions and peppers, and shredded chipotle honey lime chicken.

dsc07697

{9} C’est Cheese

Adam and I had a weekday off together and we spent several hours of it on the phone dealing with our retirement accounts.  We desperately needed booze and cheese afterwards so we headed to Port Jefferson for lunch.  Baked brie with raspberry jam.

dsc07714

Beer flight – Post Road Pumpkin / Telekinesis sour / Framboise / Imperial Biscotti Break stout.

dsc07711

Plus a Spanish salad with mandarin oranges, Manchego, olives, and a honey tarragon vinaigrette.

dsc07718

{10}  David Pumpkins

Bless you, SNL, this is my new favorite thing.

{Bonus}  Be sure to check out SaveTheDay.Vote, Joss Whedon’s super PAC that produces short PSAs about the importance of voting (for Hillary).  The subject matter is sobering but somehow the videos are all still laugh out loud hilarious.  Whedon is already my role model, and I am so impressed with all of the celebrities to chose to participate.

P.S. Happy Halloween!

Double Chocolate Cherry and Pumpkin Spice

We’re a week into Pumpkin Month and I still haven’t cracked open any of my pumpkin beers!  I have, however, purchased more (I spotted Schlafly in Manhattan – finally! – and couldn’t pass it up).  Thankfully I consider November gourd drinking time as well.

I didn’t do the best job with photos, but here were some of my eats last week…

Home-brewed coffee (espresso roast with fat-free half and half) with honey, vanilla, cinnamon, and pumpkin spice.

dsc07262

I dumped most of that yummy coffee into my purse and consoled myself with espresso and chocolate milk when I got off the train.

dsc07266

Pumpkin spice coffee with pumpkin juice that ended up being too spicy for me.  I wanted it to taste like that amazing pumpkin smoothie Odwalla used to sell.

dsc07277

I also was NOT a fan of the pumpkin pie Quest bar, big surprise.  My coffee and chocolate-covered almonds were still a good snack though.

dsc07307

As was this pear and Epic Bar combo.

dsc07291

Liberte lavender! yogurt with banana and almonds for lunch.

dsc07301

My other yogurts for the week came in the form of a product review – i.e. sent to me free of charge, with no additional compensation for this post.  Greek Gods yogurt is both Adam’s and my absolute favorite so when they offered to send me their three newest chocolate flavors I jumped at the opportunity.

dsc07142

Because they’re made with whole milk, the yogurts have too much saturated fat for me to consider them an everyday staple, however, as a treat they are fantastic.  Compared with ice cream they have less than half the saturated fat and calories (and double the protein) and 100% of the flavor and creamy decadence.  Like I said, Adam and I both consider them to be the most pleasing yogurts on the market.  And we have been eating them everyday this week!

Chocolate Cherry I decided to use in a smoothie recipe.  For 2 – blend 1 cup yogurt, 1 cup frozen dark cherries, and 8 ounces chocolate milk.  Yum!

dsc07211

Chocolate Strawberry I topped with freeze-dried strawberries, chocolate-covered cocoa nibs, and pecans.

dsc07255

And Chocolate Mocha turned into pumpkin spice mocha, with pumpkin spice granola and pepitas on top.

dsc07309

Dinners were weak this week.  I made this ridiculous grilled cheese sandwich – Havarti and sharp cheddar on cinnamon swirl bread – three nights in a row!

dsc07298

And leftovers saved me from having to cook the only meal that counts as a meal.  Pumpkin sausage pasta and broccoli salad were weirdly fantastic together.  Topped with smoked paprika and shredded cheese.

dsc07273

Last night we went to Biang!  We split shredded potatoes and garlic bok choy and I had Mt Qi spicy pickled veggies on hand-pulled noodles.  My elbow was practically touching the girl next to me, so no photos.

Today, we’re hoping to go to Smorgasburg and dinner in Williamsburg.  Have a great weekend!

It’s Apple Month!

Can I show off my apple-themed haul??  I’m quite excited about it.

dsc06633

dsc06638

dsc06641

And fittingly, we are driving upstate to go apple picking this afternoon.

So far the gum has been my favorite, though I haven’t tried any of the ciders yet.  I went out for drinks with a friend last night and had a regular (red apple) Angry Orchard that was unpleasantly sweet so I’m hoping green apple has some tartness to it.

Apple pie bar and a Gala apple.

dsc06690

Caramel apple bar with green apple sparkling water and some honey peanut butter.  With an Asian pear.

dsc06725

Caramel apple pie cheesecake from work.

dsc06731

I did eat a few things that weren’t apple-flavored.  Like a giant plate of buffalo chicken pizza!  With salads from the Whole Food’s bar, Caesar, kale, and corn.

dsc06652

Blueberry cheesecake smoothie.  Frozen berries, vanilla almond milk, cream cheese, and lemon syrup.

dsc06714

Green bean dinner bowl.  This turned out way better than I was expecting, especially because the green beans were a bag of fresh beans that got tossed into the freezer last week when they started getting old. They would have been too mushy roasted, but were perfect with an egg on top.

dsc06704

Sautéed green beans tossed with turkey bacon, mustard, and lemon juice // pan toasted whole-wheat panko // fried egg // smoked paprika.

Everyone go eat an apple!

This Weekend’s Best…

…breakfast –

DSC05902

A blueberry cheesecake smoothie!  Frozen berries with chocolate milk and low-fat cream cheese.  Adam and I both loved it.

DSC05908

Plus the new cold brew from Dunkin.  Delicious with the Heath Bar syrup and some skim milk.

…brunch

DSC05923

Colonie.  I got the duck hash again, because it makes the top five list for best dishes I’ve ever eaten.

…lunch –

DSC05878

Plain Greek yogurt with blueberries and the last of the cookies crumbled on top.

…brinner –

DSC05896

Eggs with swiss cheese, a simple salad, and a towering stack of buttered toast.

…dinner

DSC05913

Sandwich night with roasted broccoli.

DSC05922

Toasted french bread / mayo with Sriracha, fish sauce, and dark brown sugar / baked extra-firm tofu / quick pickled cucumber and shallot / crispy garlic.

…book –

DSC05887

Autumn Balloons, a memoir by Kenny Porpora.  It had me laughing and crying, both at an embarrassing volume, on the train.  Easily one of the most captivating memoirs I’ve ever read.

A Bunch Of Brunch

Chameleon’s Mexican coffee was delightful with a bit of milk.  Related – I am in physical pain that I can’t find the Texas pecan near me.

DSC05434

Iced coffee is always good though.

DSC05473

This cup from Colonie was knock-your-socks-off good.  There must have been a nitro tap somewhere because it was crazy velvety.

DSC05449

I went for brunch with a girlfriend and we were both blown away by my duck hash.  With poached egg, red potatoes, roasted onion puree, and aioli.  I’m usually not that excited by potatoes but these were crispy perfection.

DSC05451

Afterwards we went to Grand Army and had {too many!} drinks.  We practically tried the whole cocktail menu and everything was fantastic!

IMG_20160709_132449

DSC05457

Brunch numero dos at Tocolo Cantina.  I had the mushroom taquitos – crispy tacos filled with roasted mushroom, corn, and Chihuahua cheese.

DSC05474

This cafeteria lunch wasn’t too bad either.  My wrap sandwich had grilled chicken, cheddar, veggies, and cilantro.

DSC05437

Date shake smoothie.  Plain Greek yogurt, vanilla almond milk, ice, dulce de leche, and fresh dates.

DSC05463

Lavender caramel.  I brought these back from my Philly trip and I wish I’d bought more!

DSC05478

These leftovers eggs were better than they look.  With chicken hot dog, baby spinach, yellow bell pepper, and gouda cheese.

DSC05444

A 2nd home-cooked dinner in one weekend?

DSC05482

These – only ok – salmon patties came from the freezer, but I did make the tartar sauce.  Mayo, mustard, pickle relish, and dill.

DSC05487

And I assembled the salads myself.  Romaine, ranch, heirloom baby tomatoes, pistachios, and an amazing blue cheese from Trader Joe’s.

DSC05488

Independence Day Eats

I hope all of my American readers enjoyed their 4th of July.  I had a three day weekend with Adam and a holiday with theme colors so you know I was happy!

DSC05319

DSC05351

Here were the on theme (summer!) eats…

Is iced coffee a summer food?  I guess not really for me because I drink it 365 days of the year sun or snow.

DSC05323

Red, white, and blue smoothie.  Strawberry / banana yogurt / blueberry.

DSC05349

Watermelon lunch.  Chobani, fresh melon, and seltzer.

DSC05305

Boozy root beer float.  Root beer beer, dark rum, dulce de leche, and vanilla bean gelato.

DSC05330

Cook out dinner that we totally made in-doors.  Turkey hot dogs, oven-roasted corn on the cob, and Eat Live Run’s bbq kale and beans.

DSC05334

I added ketchup for dipping, seltzer for sipping, and a strawberry beer to the meal after we sat down.

DSC05339

DSC05343

See also – Genesee Cream Ale and a giant platter of nachos at a dive bar in Brooklyn.

DSC05360

Trader Joe’s shooting star cookies.

DSC05310

DSC05313

Pop rocks have kind of been our favorite this year.

I’m off to enjoy a four-day work week!
