Semi-Vacation

DSC06616

Adam has been on vacation for the past two weeks which means that, even though I’ve been at work most of the days, it feels like I’ve been on vacation for the past two weeks.  Nice!  Husband time is the best and getting to see him immediately before and after work (versus him going in while I’m asleep and coming home after dinner is made) is better than any white sand beach.

I mostly spent the past week making googly eyes at Adam.  But also, per usual, we walked and ate a ton when I wasn’t busy at work.  Here were the top ten eats for the week/end…

{1} Caramel coffee at home.

DSC06582

{2} Coconut coffee from Konditori.

DSC06615

{3} Brunch at Colonie.  Duck hash for two.

IMG_20160903_135935

With aioli, a poached egg, and the best fried potatoes.

{4} Drinks at Grand Army.

IMG_20160903_145502

The best round included this Under the Sea – Batavia Arrak agricole rum, navy-strength rum, absinthe, cinnamon, coconut, lime, and blue curacao.

{5} Fruity beers at home.

DSC06559

We recently discovered that we adore New Belgium and their watermelon lime ale did not disappoint.

{6} Key lime pie.

DSC06607

Adam explored the North Fork one day – and loved it – and brought me home some of the best pie.

{7} Mamey ice cream.

DSC06554

DSC06545

I made a sundae with maple peanut butter, granola, and sprinkles.

{8} Ice cream with apple cider caramel.  Ample Hills is celebrating Roald Dahl this month.

IMG_20160901_174542

Enjoyed September 1st to celebrate the first day of Apple Month.

{9} Buffalo chicken quinoa bowls.

DSC06564

DSC06602

I stirred sautéed onion, carrots, and celery into quinoa and topped it with fancy blue cheese and buffalo chicken dip.

{10} Seafood extravaganza at Littleneck.  We shared lobster and crab rolls.

IMG_20160901_184818

The very best dish of the night was this charred broccolini.

DSC06608

With anchovy, lemon, and chili flakes.

{bonus} Dinner at Oiji.  I didn’t take a single picture but Adam and I enjoyed one of our favorite meals of all time there.  Among other things, we had a transcendent mushroom salad and honey butter chips that blew our minds.

Three Day Weekend Staycation

Not only was I off last Friday for a three-day weekend, but Adam started a 2-week vacation and was free to hang out with me all three days as well!  We had originally thought about taking a trip to Boston but the hotel situation was prohibitively expensive and we live in the best city on Earth so it made more sense to do a staycation instead.  Basically we had a three day long date!  We walked and ate and repeated until we were sunburnt, stuffed, and smiling.

DSC06436

Friday: we took the train to the new-ish Hudson Yards Station.

DSC06311

DSC06308

Walked around Chelsea and got coffees at the up and coming Chelsea Terminal Warehouse.  Walked along the Highline.

DSC06318

Walked through Greenwich Village.  Watched the sunset at Chelsea Piers.

DSC06329

IMG_20160819_194332

Saturday: we drove into Dumbo.  Walked across the Brooklyn Bridge.

DSC06383

DSC06387

Took the free ferry to Ikea and spent an hour playing design a dream home (we did not have a couples fight, probably because all we needed to purchase was Swedish gummy candy from the bulk bins).

DSC06389

Spent the afternoon exploring Red Hook.

DSC06424

Sunday: we stopped for coffees in Floral Park.  Got brunch in Park Slope.  Walked a bit in Carrol Gardens.

DSC06450

Ate nachos in bed and watched NCIS.

I had to be choosy or this post would be too long even longer because we stopped at at least ten different spots for coffees and ice creams alone, but her were were the culinary highlights…

Cold brew from Brooklyn Roasting Company.

DSC06381

Aussie iced coffee from Bluestone Lane.

IMG_20160820_160433

It was boiling hot all weekend and we drank about a million beverages, including an ultra-hydrating product sample – coconut water from Harmless Harvest.

DSC06345

They sent me some free product coupons and cute cups in exchange for this post.

DSC06339

DSC06341

Harmless Harvest is my favorite coconut water anyway – the company is Fair for Life certified, the flavor is sweet and not “gaggy” like some brands can be, and the bottles are often pink*! – so I happily accepted.  *Per the company – “Coconut water is clear when bottled but contains a variety of antioxidants which can turn pink once they interact with sunlight.”

DSC06354

I was told to include a photo of myself enjoying the coconut water and while I tried pick a picture Adam was busy guzzling down my drink, so clearly Harmless Harvest gets a thumbs up from him as well!

DSC06372

DSC06375

Adobo-ritos with chicken and kimchi fried rice from 2nd City.  We also had really fantastic calamansi lime jello shots.

IMG_20160819_185332

Our first time at Dominique Ansel.  I thought the pastry was meh but we also tried the burrata soft serve (with balsamic caramel and a macerated strawberry) and it was mind-blowing.

DSC06325

Black sesame cream mochi.  We also picked up some cola gummies!

DSC06335

Seafood lunch at Brooklyn Crab.  We got beers and view.

DSC06415

Simple but wonderful salad to start, bibb lettuce with sweet and spicy pepitas and a maple goat cheese vinaigrette.

DSC06420

I got a blue crab roll with Old Bay mayo.

DSC06423

Steve’s Key Lime Pie, finally, I have wanted to go here since our original move to Brooklyn.

DSC06411

DSC06401

The swingle – aka key lime pie on a stick dipped in chocolate! – did not disappoint.

DSC06405

DSC06408

Brunch at Bricolage.

DSC06438

Bloody Mary.

DSC06441

I got the vegetarian crepe with king oyster and maitake mushrooms, bean sprouts, and fried eggs.  Served rolled up in lettuce leaves with fresh mint and a spicy sauce.

DSC06443

Coke float soft-serve at Milk Bar.

IMG_20160821_133324

Only two more days until the next weekend – this one’s going to be a four day doozy!

Time Crunch

Remember when I said seven days of work in a row wouldn’t be too bad?  I’m old now.  I am tired.  I don’t have a ton to share because 2/4 dinners this week were Chipotle.  And I only cooked one of the two non-Chipotle nights, the other we walked the dog to get milkshakes and then I got into bed the minute we got home at 7:30, fully dressed.

Coffee, obviously.  Starbucks pro tip – order the cold brew “with room, no water” so you can ensure it doesn’t get too diluted behind the counter.  I put milk in my coffee anyway so I’d rather temper the concentrate strength myself.

DSC06283

With almonds.

DSC06221

I’m still dying over the Grady’s Cold Brew with fat-free half & half and milk.

DSC06263

My lunches this week were centered around a generous box of freeze-dried fruits samples from Crunchies.  The products are vegan, gluten-free, and kosher, and they contain no added sugars or flavorings, just fruits that have undergone a low-pressure drying process.  Bonus – Crunchies sources the fruits directly from the farmers who grow them.

DSC06245

the free products were my only compensation for this post, all my own opinions, blah blah

We buy a lot of freeze-dried fruit because Adam often packs it for work so we were excited to try some new options.

Lows – raspberry.  Too seedy and sour/bitter.  To be fair, I don’t like any of the freeze-dried raspberries I’ve tried and I don’t love fresh raspberries.

High – everything else!  These were the best freeze-dried fruits we’ve tasted.  The strawberries weren’t too sweet or sour – no mouth pucker, the banana flavor was super strong, the grapes were sweet and a bit chewy, as were the pineapples.  10/10.

DSC06256

I enjoyed the fruits in yogurt bowls for lunch (I took half the bag and Adam took the other half with him).  Plain Siggi’s, strawberry banana, Nonni’s dark chocolate banana.

DSC06252

0% Fage, raspberries, pom seeds, maple peanut butter.

DSC06269

Vanilla yogurt, grapes, pom seeds.

DSC06273

2% Fage, pineapple, coconut butter.

DSC06280

And here’s my only dinner photo, turkey and eggs.

DSC06293

Ground turkey sautéed with celery, evoo, tomato paste, Sriracha, brown sugar, and fish sauce.  Topped with soft scrambled eggs.  I made Adam a similar but less spicy dish for breakfast when he got home from work and he loved it.

Now I have a three-day weekend!

Birthday Week Eats

I turn 31 this Sunday so this week is my birthday week.  My parents timed their summer visit for this weekend so I’m off of work today and Monday and I’m pretty sure the four-day weekend will be the best gift I’ve ever given myself.  I also pulled out this stash of cake flavored stuff I’ve been hoarding all year –

DSC05588

The Airhead wins as my favorite, it has sprinkles in it!

My other eats included…

Coffee.

DSC05599

We’ve had some big changes at work – that squeezed even more work into each day – and on top of them one of my coworkers has been out all week and I’ve been responsible for covering both intensive care units.  <– I have needed so much coffee.

DSC05654

DSC05641

DSC05602

DSC05670

I didn’t have time to pack lunch one day and I cobbled together a pretty great reuben-ish wrap sandwich in the cafeteria – sliced turkey, swiss, cole slaw, pickles, and thousand island.

DSC05657

Yogurt lunches reign supreme.  Plain Siggi’s with blackberries and coconut butter.

DSC05635

Cake yogurt with KIND maple granola and blackberries.

DSC05593

Have you done Chobani’s “Find Your Flavor Soulmate” flow chart?

chobani_flowchart_x2_v09

What combo does your heart sing for?  My answers lead me to sweet and spicy but as much as I love some sweet with my heat spiced yogurt just doesn’t appeal to me.  Sweet with sweet is much more my speed.  Like this Almond Coco Loco Flip that knocked my socks off with how fantastically creamy it was.

DSC05662

Speaking of sweet… I am still completely obsessed with Justin’s peanut butter cups, in all forms.

DSC05606

And I made the David Lebowitz chocolate chip cookies so my parents could try them, not that there are many left!

DSC05673

Best meal of the week – I made a variation on this recipe with turkey bacon, chopped spinach, and fresh mint.  It was still delicious as cold leftovers.

DSC05623

Salad night.  Romaine with ranch / turkey bacon / shrimp / carrots / tomato / fresh mint / swiss.

DSC05646

Paired with chips and dip because I’m fancy.

DSC05645

I picked my parents up from the airport last night.  JFK is a nightmare so we stayed in Long Island afterwards and grabbed dinner at a little diner near their hotel.  I actually got a pretty yummy Greek meal.

Have a great weekend!

Weekly Wrap-Up

Loves of Late

Family time: My parents were taking a quick vacation in Philadelphia this week and I took a mini road trip and drove up to spend the day with them!  I love the Magic Garden mosaics.

DSC05235

DSC05237

TV: Rizzoli and Isles is on it’s final season and we have been loving it.  It is the most unrealistic of the cop shows that I enjoy but it’s also very funny and heartwarming.  All seasons are streaming on Hulu and I highly recommend going back to the beginning and giving it a watch.  Also, the first three episodes of Documentary Now.  Adam and I thought the 1st season went quickly downhill but the very first episodes are comedy gold.

Coffee: the beans we bought at Birch are fantastic, even when brewed in our crappy coffee pot at home.

DSC05200

DSC05270

Every time I go to Reading Terminal I hit Old City Coffee.

DSC05239

Also in Philly, I finally tried La Columbe.

DSC05251

Stuff: My new planner!  I love new planners in general because I’m a dork but this one has shiny cut outs on the front. (from Blue Sky, fyi, but I couldn’t find it listed on the website)

DSC05273

I also just bought a shirt with cut outs on it, apparently that’s my summer trend.

DSC05280

The day I visited my parents we walked around the city all day and it was just so darn hot that we ended up buying me a new outfit so I could take the world’s most refreshing shower before dinner.

Eats

Coffee, duh!  More cups than were shown above, obviously.

Terrible picture of the yummy pecan pastries a coworker brought it.  She cut back on sugar which can leave baked goods overly tough but these ended up tasting like a pastry-scone hybrid.

DSC05210

Yogurt bowl – plain Greek with chopped red plum, granola, chia, and sprinkles.

DSC05195

Oatmeal bowl – with dark chocolate cacao nibs, chia, and coconut butter.  Plus an apple on the side.

DSC05262

Chia pudding.  The fizzy coconut water was horrible, btw.

DSC05294

When in Philly, (chicken) cheesesteak.

DSC05248

Pocky stick snack.

DSC05282

Turkey cheese roll ups.

DSC05289

Dinner at Devon Seafood with my parents.

DSC05255

I had the bouillabaisse.

DSC05260

Chipotle night, midweek road trips tire you out.  My burrito was stuffed with chicken, pinto beans, peppers, cheese, sour cream, corn salsa, and lettuce.

DSC05300

Best for last, the one thing I actually cooked myself!

DSC05220

White quinoa / red lentils with lemon, tomato paste, and ginger / roasted zucchini and garlic sautéed mushrooms.

DSC05226

Have a great weekend!

Queens International

NYC readers – did you march/attend Pride Parade yesterday??  It was my weekend to cover work but I did manage to snag some on-theme treats (x2).  And we didn’t have the energy to do much dinner cooking but we did have amazing Asian food in Queens (x2!).

Thursday through Sunday I worked every day but one so I’ve been drinking all of the coffee.  Thanks to caffeine, this post is mostly a complete recap, I think I’m only missing one meal from each category.  Here’s what I’ve got…

Seriously, all of the coffee.  Always in the morning and a few times as an afternoon snack as well.  Highlights include a latte from Hungry Ghost and a cold brew from Starbucks that I ordered full-strength (usually they add water).

DSC05135

DSC05071

DSC05114

DSC05141

DSC05171

With yummy bars.  Coconut Chocolate Chip.

DSC05119

Caramel Almond.

DSC05124

A creamy tropical smoothie.  Frozen mango, guava paste, avocado, and vanilla almond milk.  I used a whole avocado (split into two servings) and I think next time I’d only use half, the creaminess was great but the flavor was a bit much for me.

DSC05126

Doughnut Plant‘s Pride doughnut = yeast with raspberry glaze.

IMG_20160626_065637

Yogurt bowl.  Strawberry lingonberry with real berries and Heritage Flakes.

DSC05079

Trail mix bags.  The standout ingredient was cinnamon roasted chickpeas.

DSC05082

Mini peanut butter cups (x ten thousand) make the afternoons seem less lengthy.

DSC05111

Sandwich and fries on a busy day.  I was worried about mealy tomatoes when I bought this but they ended up being roasted and the chew and smokiness totally made the sandwich.  There was a nice layer of spinach on there too, it was actually a pretty sandwich.

DSC05123

IMG_20160624_131157

Salad / mac and cheese / hardboiled eggs.

DSC05173

Another Pride treat, from Ample Hills.  In a cone with oatmeal lace.

DSC05185

DSC05187

The Queens International Night Market was fun, like a smaller, more focused Smorgasburg.

DSC05143

We split a taro shaved ice with mango, scm, boba, and mochi.

DSC05146

I had a very disappointing duck bao.

DSC05150

And Filipino tacos that were absolutely one of the best dishes we’ve ever tasted.  Chicken sigsig, crispy shells, and lemon mayo.  They were such a pleasing mix of textures and flavors!

DSC05152

The Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens is basically just the storefront version of the market.  I want to try something in practically ever window we walked by!  I loved what I had too.  Bahn Mi at JoJu.

DSC05164

My “Hot Chicken” had grilled lemongrass chicken with spicy mayo and kimchi, plus pickled vegetables, and a soft cooked egg.  And for $5.99 it was giant, that picture only shows one half!

DSC05159

And afterwards we walked to Red Ribbon Bakeshop.  The Ube Overload cake was gorgeous but bland and the Halo Halo was fantasmic.  Shaved ice with various sweetened beans and fruits, milk , leche flan, and whipped mango topping.

DSC05166

My only “homecooked” meal was basically an assembly of parts but I ate chips and dips and three day old roasted broccoli for dinner while I wrote this post so I’ll pat myself on the back for it.  Plus it was delicious.

DSC05095

Potato and onion pierogis with tons of roasted zucchini, tossed in a sauce made of cream cheese and chicken stock, topped with hot smoked salmon.

DSC05087

DSC05108

I only work four days this week thanks to the weekend shift, woo-hoo!

DSC05182

Wrap Up, Guava Cheese Week

Important things first, check out this fantastic photo I snapped of the dog:

webster

He is my favorite!

This week’s meals were themed around one of my culinary favorites – guava and cheese.  We put this carton of guava paste to very good use.

DSC04843

There’s some leftover and we have big plans for tropical smoothies.

I didn’t do the best job of taking photos this week – there’s at least one day missing from each meal category – but I did capture the really yummy stuff…

I didn’t make coffee at home so I had to get my fix from Starbucks and the coffee shop at work.  We had a freebie ready on our registered Starbucks card so I got to go a little crazy.

DSC04886

Have you registered your Starbucks card yet?  Do it!  Even if you only stop in occasionally the rewards and perks add up quickly.

With an eggtastic sandwich.

DSC04861

With cheddar and turkey bacon on toasted whole-wheat.

And a really fantastic Larabar.

DSC04816

Hazelnut, hemp, and crunchy bits of cacao

This kombucha and seltzer were both on top of their game.

DSC04810

Sadly the mango coconut chia pudding from Trader Joe’s was not to my taste at all.  I threw it out two bites in and headed to the cafeteria instead.

Oatmeal day.  Chia, cashews, freeze-dried berries, and cookie butter on top.

DSC04836

Plus a sweet and juicy Smitten apple.

I even brought guava for lunch one day.

DSC04882

With white nectarine, granola, and the last of some plain Greek yogurt.

It was a very snacky week but the only thing I managed a picture of were these mini pb cups.

DSC04866

I recommend them highly.

Guava cheese week win – quesadillas!

DSC04847

We spread flour tortillas with guava pasta, smothered them in low-fat shredded mozzarella, and pan cooked them with a bit of evoo.

DSC04858

Plus roasted green beans.

DSC04852

These were basically the un-fried version of the empanada I’m obsessed with from the truck in downtown Brooklyn.

We also made pizza.

DSC04875

On TJ’s frozen thin crust (our favorite) with turkey summer sausage on top.  Amazing.

Yesterday we happily skipped guava and cheese in favor of a date night dinner at Pig & Khao.  This Burmese eggplant salad was one of the best dishes we’ve ever put in our faces.

DSC04887

Grilled eggplant, peanuts, dried shrimp, and mint, scooped with shrimp chips.  Umami.  Neither of us could stop raving about it.

My Khao Soi wasn’t bad either.  Red curry, coconut milk, chicken, egg noodles, pickled mustard greens, and red onions.

DSC04893

Slurping long noodles meant I ended up head to toe covered in red curry but it was worth it.

I cooled down my mouth with the Ginpo.

DSC04892

Gin, grapefruit, cinnamon, and prosecco.

While we were in the neighborhood, we finally checked out the Magnum store.  It’s the famous ice cream bars hand-dipped in chocolate and sprinkled and drizzled with your 3 choices from the toppings bar.

IMG_20160616_181046

We got vanilla / dipped in milk chocolate / topped with gold flake, rose petals, and espresso sugar / drizzled with dark chocolate.  It was good, the shell was wonderfully thick, but I was definitely glad Adam was there to share with me.

Bao, Bubble Tea, And A Birthday

DSC04524

Three day weekend eats.  My third day was Friday, not Memorial Day (hello, healthcare family, Adam and I both worked the holiday).

We managed to fit a lot of fun into the days.  Including not one but two types of bubble tea!  Plus a trip to Pennsylvania for my middle niece’s birthday party – Adam’s entire family was there and it was great to see everyone together.  And a loooong walk in the almost-summer sun that left me burnt to a crisp.

DSC04487

Here were the highlights…

We split an iced latte and a lavender coconut shortbread from Tygershark.

DSC04457

We adored the cute succulents, natural light, and overall vibe in there, we will definitely be heading in for a meal soon.

I packed us great bagels for our mini road trip.  Topped with fancy lox and Neufchatel cheese.

DSC04523

DSC04528

Plus toasted marshmallow coffee once we got to PA.

Green juice on a shopping trip at Whole Foods.

DSC04503

Kale, spinach, cucumber, and orange.  I went back and asked for ice, green juice is a billion times tastier when it’s cold.

Baohaus.

DSC04463

The “Uncle Jesse Bao” is fried tofu served with Haus Seasoning Salt, crushed peanuts, Taiwanese red sugar, cilantro, and Haus Sauce.  P.S. I am ashamed about how much I am anticipating “Fuller House” season 2.

Boba is the our favorite.  Black rose tea with tapioca and housemade almond jelly at Boba Guys.

DSC04477

Plus I have been Instagram-jealous of this treat from Vivi for months.

13267607_644842625668783_1707443160_n

Black milk tea with boba on the bottom and a cloud of cotton candy – sprinkled with pop rocks!! – top.  So much fun!

Best for last – a picnic with my boys!

DSC04514

DSC04510

DSC04513

We shared grilled cheese sandwiches and a long nap on a blanket in the grass.

We’ve made it to Wednesday, enjoy the rest of your week!
