Back At It

We are back at the old grind.  The first week of real life after vacation felt loooooong.  It’s good to be back at work though, and great to be back with the dog!

Here were some of the best bites this week…

This week’s coffee was fan-freaking-tastic!  Blackhand that I brought home from my trip to Richmond.  It was super strong and roasty.

DSC03953

With strawberry watermelon Polar that’s my new favorite flavor.

DSC04013

I also tried the caramel almond Nutchello.  It was pleasant but not as strongly flavored as I was hoping for.

DSC03947

Midmorning snack of baby carrots and wonderful red cherries.

DSC03959

Cafeteria lunch.  They are making a fancy new hybrid burger that is half turkey half veggie; it was good!  My korma veggies were not so good, I ended up swapping them for fries.

DSC03979

Yogurt bowl.  Salted caramel noosa (<– yum!) with blueberries and blackberries and awesome gorp-style trail mix my aunt gave us.  Plus a golden nugget mandarin orange on the side.

DSC03996

Better yogurt bowl.  Plain Greek yogurt, berries, red plum, Nature’s Path Heritage Flakes, nature’s sprinkles (chia) for healthy fat, and Amy Sedaris’ sprinkles for joy.

DSC04023

This ridiculously adorable cookie from Starbucks made for a fun end of the day snack.

DSC04047

And carrots with caramelized onion dip was the perfect thing to crunch through while I cooked this week.

DSC03981

We also really enjoyed lemonade with pink lemon!  Perfect with mint sparkling water.  The lemons were orange on the outside, pinkish on the inside, and sweeter than their yellow counterparts.

DSC04027

Brinner for the win.  Banana pecan pancakes, berries, and amazing turkey bacon, with maple syrup poured on after the picture.

DSC04003

Breakfast for dinner is always a good idea, but it’s a great idea when your drink and dessert are also on theme.  We planned the pancakes because we both had coffee-flavored beers to try.

DSC03984

And we tried the crazy expensive, crazy good Compartes donuts & coffee bar.  I thought it was totally worth the price.

DSC04007

Our other dinners were also winners.  Nachos!  Maple bacon kettle chips with TJ’s low-fat three cheese blend, turkey bacon, shredded turkey breast, broccoli, and green pepper.

DSC03966

And Greek salad night.  Greens with Greek feta dressing, cucumber, tabouli, TJ’s stuffed grape leaves, and crunchy roasted chickpeas.

DSC04035

Last night we ate Chipotle and caught up on TV. <– kind of the best date night

Spring In The City

DSC03929

As of this morning our spring vacation comes to a close.  We did St. Thomas, DC, and a few wonderful days in the best city on Earth (aka our hometown, NYC).  After a month apart while Adam was in Texas the past two weeks have been fantastic.  I’m going to miss him a lot this workweek.

DSC03933

DSC03931

In spite of the rain and bitter cold over the past few days we managed to pack a lot of fun into our Friday/Saturday/Sunday.  We walked more than 10 miles around Manhattan on Friday, most of them in the downpour!  We had enough reprieves from the weather to appreciate how insanely gorgeous our city is in the spring.

DSC03907

DSC03904

DSC03921

DSC03923

DSC03926

Here were our top five eats from the end of vacation…

{1} Breakfast at Back Room

DSC03878

Breakfast in a fancy hotel with a view of the city?  Yes, please!  And it was one of the best meals of the weekend.  Adam got an amazing fish platter with herring and smoked sturgeon, smoked salmon, belly lox, pastrami salmon, fingerling potatoes, eggplant salad, and cream cheese with trout roe.  I’m usually a bit too squeamish for lox but I happily stole bites of everything from this plate.

DSC03884

I had duck confit hash topped with a duck egg!  With a cheddar biscuit with honey and butter.

DSC03879

You really can’t go wrong with duck on duck; my meal was almost too rich.

{2} Brunch at Du Jour Bakery

It was so good the last time that I had to go back and take Adam.  I ordered an iced latte (made with Brooklyn Roasting Company) immediately.

DSC03939

And I went savory with an egg and cheese croissant sandwich.  My meal came with a tasty side salad and Adam’s came with fries so we were in business!

{3} Donuts from Underwest

DSC03886

A Hells Kitchen spot inside of a car wash.  We tried halvah and vanilla-lavender.

DSC03893

They were a bit cakey for my preferences (Adam disagrees) but the glaze was top-notch.

Plus coffee from Laughing Man, Hugh Jackman’s Tribeca shop that donates all of it’s proceeds to the Laughing Man Foundation.

DSC03917

That’s a honey lavender latte to fit with our donuts.

{4} Ice cream from I CE NY

Smashed and rolled ice cream!  They spread your base flavor and mix-ins on a giant frozen metal plate.

DSC03911

I got Thai iced tea ice cream with sprinkles mixed in and popping boba, mochi, and condensed milk on top.

DSC03913

It was fun, and also some of the best ice cream I’ve ever eaten.  The base ended up being amazingly chewy! <– here is some info on why “chewy” is a compliment

{5} Dinner at Ten Ichi Ramen, a newish spot in Park Slope

We started with duck bao.

DSC03941

I got the veggie ramen, with an aged egg on top.

DSC03946

Not as good as Chuko but still pretty darn good.  The broth was so creamy!  Plus their chili garlic oil was wonderful, which is good for me because I add it to my ramen by the scoop.

{The Best} St. Thomas Visit 2016

DSC03757

DSC03758

DSC03762

Adam and I started our two-week vacation off right with an incredible visit home to see my parents and soak up some sun.  For the first time since college I managed to have the dates line up so that I could make it for Carnival*!  We also went to St. John*, The Baths*, the beach, and got to spend time with old friends.  It was pretty much the perfect trip.

* I took way too many pictures so all of the items starred above are going to have to be their own posts over the rest of the week

DSC03774

DSC03775

Speaking of too many pictures, I’m limiting this post to the highlights.  Here are some of our favorites from home…

The best hosts – my parents.  In addition to driving us all over the place, ironing my dresses, playing board games even though Adam always throws a fit, and just being generally amazing, they cooked us Adam’s favorite meal and my favorite dessert.  Bill Clinton’s Enchiladas.

DSC03653

And key lime pie.

DSC03655

Which meant there was leftover pie for me to eat on top of Greek yogurt.  <– the best thing ever

DSC03677

I always serve it with flax so it’s basically a health food.

The best breakfast – Barefoot Buddha.

DSC03663

I got an iced Vietnamese latte and the sandwich I ate on my wedding day, aka the Bigfood Bagel sandwich: egg frittata, smoked turkey, turkey bacon, cream cheese, sharp cheddar cheese, chipotle aioli, tomato-onion coulis, and fresh spinach.

The best brunch – The Grille Room at Mahogany Run. My (extra-spicy) Bloody Mary came topped with a stuffed olive, banana pepper, and shrimp!

13129432_641053512699135_2114858904_n

I also had a really top-notch chopped salad with shrimp and chipotle-ranch among other yummy things.  And then every singe person at the table ordered a vodka + soda and all was right with the world.

The best coffee – Bad Ass at Yacht Haven.

DSC03754

My triple non-fat iced latte was perfectly roasty good.

The best pizza – Island Time Pub.  Pro tip – start with a salad, they are gigantic and two-three people can share one.

DSC03672

Adam and I got a pie with artichoke, Kalamata olives, and roasted garlic.

DSC03674

Plus their drink menu is on point.

The best johnny cake – served at the window on the Waterfront by The Greenhouse, with cheese.

DSC03779

Caribbean johnny cake (versus the cornmeal version found in the American south) is slightly sweet, unleavened fried bread.  It is delicious in general and freaking mind-blowing when served with cheese.

DSC03666

Was It Blogvious?

Adam’s back, yay!  Surprise?  I tried to keep it under wraps for security reasons, so I hope it wasn’t blogvious (<– totally unnecessary portmanteau for obvious on the blog) that Adam has been out of town for the past month.  He had a trauma rotation in Texas and the dog and I missed him like crazy!  Now he’s back and we both have two weeks off of work and I plan on spending the majority of them holding his hand!

Foodwise, here were the weekend highlights…

Adam didn’t get back into town until late Sunday evening and I spent the better part of the day hyperventilating with excitement.  I distracted myself for a little bit with Vietnamese iced coffee and a pedicure.

DSC03507

DSC03504

Fun fact – toe nail polish was my something blue in my wedding.

Another day, another coffee.

DSC03513

I usually skip over Gala apples but this one was very sweet and crisp.

Brunch with friends at Du Jour Bakery, my new favorite breakfast spot in Park Slope.  The space feels totally open and airy and they have yummy iced lattes.

DSC03492

I ordered the brioche French toast with maple butterscotch, berries, and whipped cream.

12599439_494486650750199_618129038_n

It was good, but I need to accept the fact that I don’t really like French toast.  My girlfriends got savory egg sandwiches that I think I would love.

Dinner at Pearl’s Bake and Shark, a newish Trinidadian spot in Williamsburg.  My bake and jerk chicken was very tasty.

12965710_577630305752870_610441212_n

Aka pulled jerk chicken on fried dough, with pickled slaw and pineapple salsa.  The chicken didn’t taste like the jerk I grew up with, but it was smoky delicious.

Bbq turkey salad at home.

DSC03517

Baby spinach dressed with creamy Greek dressing / avocado / cucumber / chopped turkey breast tossed in cola bbq sauce / brie / a sprinkle of smoked paprika.  A great combo; the paprika was such a good addition.

Superlative Eats

This week’s…

*Best coffee*

DSC03352

Inspired by my absolutely decadently scented hand sanitizer, I stirred cinnamon and vanilla bean into my coffee (espresso blend with chocolate milk).

*Best oatmeal*

DSC03392

Rolled oats with chia and freeze-dried blueberries, topped with a hefty scoop of cookie butter.

*Best yogurt bowl*

DSC03376

Maple quark with Heritage Flakes and pomegranate.

*Best lunch*

DSC03400

DSC03420

12976430_1076731662420755_799515148_n

Sandwich week.  Spicy chicken on rye / Starbuck’s sandwich offerings are actually really darn good / Greek wrap stuffed with cucumber, tzatziki, and stuffed grape leaves.  <– the wrap was from a lunch and learn, our formula rep did a great inservice on the new ASPEN enteral nutrition guidelines.

*Best dessert*

DSC03418

Work party for a coworker’s birthday.  We had filipino ambrosia and I made brownies.

DSC03407

DSC03413

Fantastically ridiculous brownies! P.S. Amy Sedaris’ best-ever sprinkles are available here.

Sprinkles And Sandwiches

By the time this post goes live I’ll already be on my way to work (wan wan).  I’m working Saturday/Sunday because I have Friday/Monday off, and I’m heading in extra-early because we have family visiting and I need to be done and free to hang out in the afternoon.  The good thing about visitors is that we’ll probably take them to Ample Hills!

Friday was a boring mix of buying new couch slipcovers and filing our taxes (wan wan), but Monday we’ve got some fun breakfast plans lined up.

A few of my dinners were pretty darn weak, but all of this week’s lunches were exclamation point worthy.

DSC02930

Daytime Eats

This weeks’ coffee – Starbucks espresso blend with skim milk.  With a piñata apple.

DSC02816

And a chocolate pretzel protein bar.

DSC02892

Or a wonderfully juice sumo mandarin.

DSC02857

Or a lavender kombucha.

DSC02884

Plus buttered toast.

DSC02907

I also had an Americano with chocolate milk.

DSC02841

Plus Adam and I split a butterscotch latte while we ran errands.

DSC02918

With extra espresso, Adam loved it too.

This week’s tea – Roobios.

DSC02806

Amazingly, this caffeine-free herbal was my favorite tea thus far.  With milk and honey it was downright delicious.

I’m still excited by this gum.

extra

The flavor dies in about a minute but who doesn’t love a gum with sprinkles?

Oatmeal bowl.  Oats with freeze-dried raspberries and blueberries and peanut butter chocolate chips.

DSC02805

The oats were great, but I ate much earlier in the day than I usually do (and then stayed for an hour of overtime!) and I ended up also getting a guava cheese empanada on the train home.

DSC02890

Yogurt bowl.  Plain 2% Greek yogurt with fresh blackberries and pomegranate, toasted pecans, chia seeds, and Heritage Flakes.

DSC02820

Yogurt bowl.  Maple Chobani with blackberries, pecans, and Heritage Flakes.

DSC02878

Salad bar.  I love the days when the cafeteria does a Greek section; my salad was loaded with falafel, tzatziki, and taboule, plus black-eyed peas, olives, and cucumber.

DSC02858

Friday, Adam and I went to lunch at a new restaurant near our apartment.  The meal was underwhelming, but I made a great yogurt bowl for dessert when I got home.

DSC02920

Plain Greek with peanut butter, honey, cinnamon, maple pecan granola, more pecans, and Luxardo cherries on top!

Nighttime Eats

House snacks included cashews – I’ve been making Adam trail mix bags for work and snacking heartily while I assemble them.

DSC02825

And chocolate-covered gummies.

DSC02861

And fun snacks included two girlfriend outings this week.  A coworker and I got drinks at Colonie after an outlandishly frustrating work day.  Bolivian Rose – Singani 63, Aperol, Dolin dry vermouth, Combier, and a super fragrant lemon twist.

colonie

And I introduced a friend to the Korean-style shaved ice at Snowdays.

snowdays

They had specialty flavors – Thai iced tea!  Topped with mochi, sweetened condensed milk, and grass jelly.

The mid-week blahs led to some pretty disastrous meals.  Like big salads – baby kale, cashews, chia seeds, pomegranate, and peanut sauce – and horrifyingly cheesy nachos.

DSC02869

DSC02876

Or a sandwich night where the only veggies to be found were a side of baby carrots.

DSC02895

DSC02903

My sandwich – with a butter-toasted brioche, roasted turkey, raw milk cheddar, special sauce, and tons of pickles – was delicious but not the healthiest.

But we went on a really fantastic Tuesday night date at Talde.  Now that I know that I like ginger in drinks I could order the Ginger Rose – Four Roses bourbon, Applejack, lemon, and ginger-cinnamon infused grenadine.

DSC02842

The drink was good but the meal was to die for; truly one of the best dishes we’ve ever had.  Acorn squash rendang with Malaysian grits, fried shallot, pickled shitake, and a six-minute egg.

DSC02845

The blend of textures and flavors – crispy with creamy, spice with sour – was unbelievably satisfying.  Dessert was sweet with salty.

DSC02851

Pretzel-potato chip bars with chocolate ganache.

And we started the week with veggie tofu bowls.

DSC02829

Extra-firm tofu was marinated in stone-ground mustard, lemon juice, honey, and evoo then baked ’til crispy.

DSC02832

Served on top of honey butter shredded carrots, and sautéed brussels sprouts tossed in the tofu marinade.

And ended the week with veggie packed pasta.  TJ’s spinach tortellini with red sauce.

DSC02931

We gussied up the sauce with sautéed mushroom and onion and roasted zucchini and graffiti eggplant.  I followed the Serious Eats trick of adding pasta water.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!  Let’s cross our fingers for more warm weather!

Wonderful Weekend Walking Weather

Oh my gosh, thank you so much, New York, for the gorgeous weekend weather!  We took full advantage and fit a long walk into our fun on both Saturday and Sunday.

DSC02785

Daytime Eats

My new favorite ridiculous coffee.

DSC02700

Butterscotch latte with an extra shot.

Oatmeal bowl.  Rolled oats, chia seeds, freeze-dried blueberries, and toasted walnuts.

DSC02695

Topped with a chocolate coconut peanut butter packet.  The pb gets so gooey good on the hot oats.

Drinks in my carts while I did a giant shopping trip.

DSC02725

DSC02730

Green juice with spinach, kale, cucumber, and pineapple.

Sunday was our Brooklyn date.  We saw Deadpool (<– loved it!  loved that it was just funny, hilariously, and not sad at all) and took another long walk, including some exciting food stops.  Iced Vietnamese latte.

DSC02764

It was so warm out that I enjoyed my iced drink whilst walking along in only a tank top and cardigan!!

DSC02770

A “hot dog” at the Smorgasburg Industry City location.  Pan con queso is a grilled chunk of marinated white Latin cheese on a hot dog bun, topped with onions, cabbage, crushed potato chips, ketchup, mustard, and guasacaca (cilantro and parsley).  It was scrumptious.

DSC02763

Amazing, freshly-made cheese and potato pierogis at Baba’s.  These were out of this world, they had the best pierogi dough I’ve ever tasted.

DSC02772

And an ice cream cone to top it all off.

DSC02780

DSC02776

Ample Hills’ salted crack caramel (smoky caramel ice cream with hunks of crack candy) and It Came From Gowanus (salty dark chocolate ice cream with hazelnut crack candy, white chocolate pearls, and orange-scented brownies) in a cookie cone.

Nighttime Eats

I hit up my grocery’s deli for a quick meal on Adam’s overnight shift.

DSC02713

Tortellini salad and crunchy broccoli salad.

DSC02724

Plus lemon rosemary focaccia hummus with baked garlic pita chips and baby carrots.

DSC02720

Best store-bought hummus of all time.

A fancy dinner date at Upland.  We really enjoyed our meal here, the menu changes seasonally and we will definitely be back in the summer.

DSC02731

They brought us a potato bread loaf with chive and lemon zest butter.

DSC02738

And we started with the whole crispy hen of the woods mushroom, with cloumage cheese and meyer lemon.  This was fantastically meaty and loaded with umami.

DSC02745

Plus a greatcocktail, Bill Pay Buck – Tito’s, Aperol, ginger, and lime.  I think that I hate ginger in drinks but somehow this felt very balanced.

DSC02741

And I got the cioppino for my meal, clams, red shrimp, mussels, striped bass, jumbo lump crab, and gochujang.  I have been so brave with my seafood consumption lately, this was my first ever clam! (<– I hated it, but at least I tried)

DSC02746

My soup came with a thick slice of butter bread and I ordered a can of Genny Cream Ale that just felt right.

DSC02751

Dessert was the only part of the meal that didn’t blow us away.  Devil’s food cake, milk chocolate ganache, and hazelnut praline, sounded good in theory but was just meh.

DSC02753

But we ran into a Woop’s so we had our sugar fix covered.

DSC02756

Good timing too, we found it just before we crossed the bridge back to Queens.

Burger night to end the weekend.

DSC02792

TJ’s brioche rolls are wonderful.  We made our burgers with ground turkey, whole-wheat panko, eggs, spices, and browned shallots, cooked in a pan with evoo.  Topped with pickle slices, raw milk cheddar, and Sir Kensington’s special sauce.  So delicious we had to go back and split a second one!

DSC02798

With an easy salad of baby kale, pomegranate, pecans, chai seeds, and lavender salt / lavender honey / evoo / balsamic.

DSC02793

If the upcoming week is half as good as my dinner I’m in for a good time!

Raisins, Ramen, Ready For The Weekend

This week’s food themes were…

—Coffee

Always.  TJ’s cold brew (<– super strong and bold) with skim milk and vanilla almond milk.

DSC02660

Starbuck’s new smoked butterscotch latte is fantastic.  I’m a total sucker for any limited-edition release and a butterscotch fanatic in general.

DSC02665

Iced latte from Milk Bar that was unexpectedly the best latte I’ve had all year.  Usually I have to request an extra shot of espresso to feel like I’m having coffee with milk instead of milk with coffee, but this was perfect even untampered with.

DSC02673

The compost cookie didn’t suck either!

—Old-school turkey sandwiches

Old-school = white bread with cheese and mayo and mustard, i.e. super unhealthy with no redeeming nutrition qualities.  From the cafeteria with tons of pickles and banana peppers.

DSC02688

And at home on a raisin roll with carrots on the side.

DSC02691

Speaking of dehydrated grapes, I also had this raisin brown sugar Chobani.

DSC02654

The yogurt was meh, I don’t care for the texture of the oat line, but the mix-ins were great – yellow raisins, walnuts, chia seeds, and fresh blueberries.

—Ramen

I went out on two ramen dates this week, thankfully it’s been good weather for soup!  Chuko (<– my favorite ramen in the city) with work friends for veggie miso with a soft egg.

12728472_805389422904422_22593116_n

And Ramen Yebisu in Williamsburg with girlfriend.  I was adventurous and got the seafood special, with seafood broth, prawn, snow crab, mussel, scallop, scallion, and seaweed.

DSC02672

I was super brave (the scallops were a different variety than the diver scallops you usually see and we didn’t even know what they were until we tasted them) and it paid off in the form of a giant crab leg in the middle of my bowl.

One more day and then I’m free for weekend fun!
