Sweeter Than Sugar Valentine’s Tour With Sugartooth

Last Saturday, Adam and I were invited on a sweet dessert tasting tour of in the city.

sugartooth

Sugartooth Tours, formed by best friends who bonded over a love of theatre and ice cream, offers several NYC-based dessert tours.  Right now all of the tours take place in Manhattan, but Allyson gave me the inside scoop that they are testing out a Brooklyn tour to be debuted this summer.  Some of the tours include a Village Cupcake Crawl, an Ice Cream Summer Sundays Frozen Treats Tour, several mixed treats tours around Hell’s Kitchen, Broadway, and Chelsea/the West Village, and the option of personalized itineraries for small group celebrations.

The tours range in size from 3 – 16 people and are guided by one of the knowledgeable and friendly co-founders.  You walk from nosh to nosh – usually 6 stops in total and no more than 2 miles – learning about the history of the neighborhood on your way.  It takes about 2 and half hours from start to finish.  Tickets are $50 per person and include all tastings.  You also have a bit of time at the stops to purchase additional items to take home if you are so inclined, but there is definitely no pressure to buy anything.

The Chelsea/West Village option, the Sweeter Than Sugar Dessert Tour, is available year-round at 4pm on Sundays.  For a limited time, they have updated it with a Valentine’s theme for the upcoming Festival of Love and Candy.  The updated tour includes Valentine’s history trivia – most of it more gory than gushy – and is taken in pairs so you can experience the fun with your sweetheart (or your mom, no judgment!).  This is the tour we were invited to take.

sweeter than sugar valentine's tour

Special hours for the Sweeter Than Sugar Valentine’s Tour are February 13th, 14th, & 15th at 5:30 PM and February 14th & 15th at 2PM.  If you’re interested, you can sign up on the website here.

General thoughts on the tour:

  • Adam and I both had a wonderful time (the 2.5 hours flew by) and agree that we would like to check out Sugartooth Tours again on our own this summer.
  • The tours run rain or shine, so be sure to dress accordingly.  We got lucky with a “warm” 40 degree night, but you kept moving when you were outside so there wasn’t much time to get cold.
  • Bring water!  Sugar makes me quite thirsty.
  • We ended up taking home lots of leftovers, so save yourself some extra room in your bag.

The stops:

{1} We started at City Cakes, who are known for their gorgeous cake decorating but have also branched out into giant 1/2 pound cookies that are baked 3 times and reshaped in between trips to the oven.

city cakes nyc

Some of the flavors included chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, ginger spice, triple chocolate with clove, and peanut butter with Reeses Pieces.  Adam I got red velvet stuffed with cream cheese frosting.

city cakes half pound red velvet cookie stuffed with cream cheese frosting

Crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside, this was delicious.  Note – you got the entire cookie, they just cut it in halves so you can eat while you walk.

{2} Next we headed into Chelsea Market to Amy’s Bread for hot chocolate with homemade marshmallows.

chelsea market

Their hot chocolate is pure ganache mixed with steamed milk.  It wasn’t as gloriously thick as the stuff from Max Brenner, but it was flavorful and not too sweet.  The marshmallows were the best we’ve ever had.  Adam usually turns up his nose at marshmallows on cocoa but even he loved it.

Note – we were encouraged to fill up the (full-sized) cup, and even refill for the road, but I was trying to pace myself.

{3} Then we trekked on the High Line – gorgeous at night – to Sugar Factory, a Vegas import famous for their rhinestone-bedazzled lollipop sticks, of course.

DSC05427

They also had giant walls of candy and we were given small take-out boxes and told to go crazy.

DSC05435

They had a good variety, including cola bottles, chocolate-covered gummy bears, and several themed options for Valentine’s.

{4} Heading into West Village, we stopped at Chocolate Bar where we were taught the proper way to taste a truffle.  CB was a cute spot, boasting many nicely wrapped, fun flavors.

chocolate bar nyc

Adam was enticed into buying (and eating) a full-sized candy bar!

candy at chocolate bar

They had a good variety of truffles, and I choose grapefruit and cajeta.

truffles at chocoalte bar

Cajeta = condensed milk caramel = Mexican dulce de leche = swoon.

{5} Allyson noted that you pretty much have to include macarons, and they felt that Sugar & Plumm has the best in Manhattan.

sugar & plumm nyc

They have some inventive flavors – strawberry poppyseed, violet blackcurrant, chocolate-covered banana! – and are made in New Jersey so they don’t suffer from a long shipping time from France.

salted caramel macaroon at sugar & plumm nyc

I very much enjoyed the salted caramel and Adam, who “hates” macarons, went back for seconds of the pistachio!

{6} Finally, we ended at Sweet Revenge for chocolate and peanut butter cupcakes.  They are known for their cupcake and wine or beer pairings so we had the option of paying extra for the recommended Malbec or Hefeweizen, but everyone on our tour opted to take their cupcake to go.

So, six; apparently six desserts is overkill 😉

Please note – Sugartooth Tours brought Adam and I on the tour free of charge so we could see what it was all about.  I was not provided with further compensation for this post.  All opinions are my own.

Weekend Wrap-Up

random facts

  1. I finished reading my latest book on Friday – Fairyland, a memoir about growing up with an openly gay father in San Francisco in the 80’s.  (Not much of a)spoiler alert – he dies of AIDS related complications.  I was wracked with sobs for the last quarter of the book.  Steve Abbot was a published author who kept detailed journals his entire adulthood and wrote copious letters to Alysia while she was in college, so she had a lot of source material to pull from which was nice; it was practically a biography within a memoir.
  2. A big chunk of Saturday is missing because we went on a fun foodie tour and I am devoting a whole post to it.  (coming tomorrow)
  3. We upgraded our phones on Sunday.  My new Galaxy is giant and tacky, obnoxiously gold.

breakfast

Adam and I tried the new raspberry white chocolate coffee from Dunkin’.

DSC05396

Our opinions ranged from good to meh.  I still want to try the Starbucks version.

Cereal bowl.

DSC05534

Cocoa Pebbles and Nature’s Path Heritage Flakes.  Pebbles have absolutely no flavor and were deeply disappointing.

Oatmeal bowl.

DSC05539

Rolled oats – cooked in the microwave – with 1 heaping Tbsp each chopped pecans, raisins, chocolate chips, and brown sugar.  Plus milk on top.

Coffee from 7-11 with wasabi almonds.

DSC05504

Yes, that was a terrible combination.

lunch

Chipotle!

DSC05398

White rice / chicken / black beans / sautéed veggies / fresh salsa / tomatillo salsa / sour cream / cheese.  I would normally get lettuce but I split this bowl with Adam and he didn’t want it.  I’ve stopped putting the corn salsa on my bowls in general because even though it’s tasty it isn’t really necessary to pile another carb on top of a rice bowl.

Adam went to a post-ABSITE surgical exam party and brought home leftover mini pizzas.

DSC05514

Paired with green juice.

DSC05476

NYC Jamba Juices recently introduced a new line of 12 oz Cold-Pressed Juice bottles and they sent me a $10 gift card so I could try them out.

DSC05485

I was not provided with further compensation for this post.  All opinions are my own.

The juices contain no preservatives and three servings of fruit and/or vegetables and each full bottle has between 140 to 190 calories.

DSC05477

Citrus Kick was way too spicy for me – Adam liked it but I just can’t do ginger – but I found Tropical Greens to be nicely balanced, neither two sweet nor too grassy.  (There are four flavors in total; the two I didn’t try were Orange Reviver and Veggie Harvest).

dinner

We had another stupendous meal at Russ & Daughters.

DSC05489

The Breakfast Martini = Beefeater gin, jam, lemon juice, egg white, Pernod Absinthe, Angostura Bitters.

DSC05496

I adore cocktails with egg white.  <– I was about to type that they will be hard for me to give up if I get pregnant!  I guess the alcohol may also be an issue.

I ordered the Eggs Benny, which came with Scottish smoked salmon and sautéed spinach on challah.

DSC05500

No surprise, the eggs were perfectly poached and the hollandaise was loaded with flavor.  <– more reasons I’m not chomping at the bit for a baby

Sunday night we made a nice, but less exciting dinner at home.

DSC05521

We were helped out by a jar of Sepo Sauce, a creamy garlic and horseradish spread that’s meant to be used as a dressing, dip, and/or sandwich spread.

DSC05506

Sepfonifiq sent me a jar of sauce free of charge to review.  I was not provided with further compensation for this post.  All opinions are my own.

The sauce has 150 calories and 2.5 grams saturated fat per 2-Tbsp serving, so it’s not any healthier than most typical dressings, but it packs a lot of flavor so you would rarely need to use any more than a serving.

We decided to go the bread and lettuce route.

DSC05518

A sandwich of part-skim mozzarella cheese, thick-cut uncured turkey ham steak, and whole-wheat cinnamon swirl bread spread with Sepo Sauce and oven-toasted.

DSC05527

A salad of baby kale tossed in Sepo Sauce and topped with roasted broccoli and sweet and spicy pecans.

DSC05525

Plus we split a sumo mandarin on the side.

DSC05532

Sadly, we hated the thick cut turkey, which kind of ruined the sandwiches.  We both got rid of the meat halfway through and ended up eating big desserts instead.  But we loooved the Sepo as a dressing and were both blown away by the salad.  I will definitely look forward to making that again.

Please cross your fingers that it’s not actually snowing in NYC right now?

Last Week’s Top Five

DSC05390

{1} Coffee, always.

DSC05341

DSC05373

The Hint of Honey Almond Breeze is coffee’s perfect companion.  (note – I prefer the original to vanilla)

{2} Dates with turkey bacon.

DSC05386

I agree, everything on that napkin looks like a cockroach (dates one major downfall!), but the combination was delicious.

{3} Good lunches from the cafeteria.

20150206_131508

20150203_125330

A winning tuna salad sandwich and a giant burrito with chicken, cheese, sour cream, salsa, and tons of broccoli that they sweetly let me add from the salad bar.

{4} Berry yogurt bowl.

DSC05382

Fresh blues / Stonyfield Strawberry Oh My Yog! / Nature’s Path Heritage Flakes.  I did not enjoy the sour, whole milk taste of the yogurt, but several coworkers tasted the cereal after I raved about it and wrote down the specs so they could buy some too!

{5} A meze plate.

DSC05351

All from Trader Joe’s – dates / green and orange bell peppers / baby carrots / dolmas / olives / kalamata olive hummus.

Weekly Wrap-Up; On The Mend

I am still a teensy bit sick, but thankfully I am feeling much, much better than last weekend.  Hopefully by the end of this weekend I’ll be back to 100%!

breakfast

My first day back, when I came in feeling just terrible, my coworker surprised me with a bagel with lox and cream cheese.

DSC05081

So sweet of her, and very serendipitous since I hadn’t managed to get coffee, let alone breakfast.

Adam drove me into work on Wednesday since he had errands to do in Brooklyn, so we went in early and made a date of it.

DSC05129

Doughnut Plant!

doughnut plant - brooklyn

I got a coconut cream filled and a Valrhona hot chocolate.  Plus we stopped for an iced coffee along the walk.

DSC05135

This was so much fun, I cannot even tell you; morning date for the win.

Yesterday I randomly woke up feeling sooo hungry so I pieced together a big breakfast in the cafeteria.

DSC05182

Coffee with chocolate milk,

DSC05183

and scrambled eggs, veggie sausage, and a croissant.

lunch

Veggie pizza from the cafeteria.

This was good, but it had corn on it which I found to be an incredibly strange topping choice.  Not that I don’t love corn, but on a pizza??!

Wednesday I brought an apple and a Jarlsberg Cheese Mini (more on that in a minute…) from home.

DSC05145

Plus a salad from the cafeteria that I apparently don’t have a picture of.

Yesterday was another apple, plus an Apricot Ancient Grains Chobani with TJ’s Pumpkin O’s and KIND Banana Nut Clusters.

DSC05175

I liked the Chobani much more than the one with oats I tried previously.  The pieces of apricot were quite nice.

snack

I don’t usually drink coffee after 4 pm but I ended up getting iced decafs twice this week because I was so obsessed with the idea of coffee flavor in the evening.

DSC05087

DSC05161

With skim milk and a splash of cream.

Another night we had smoothies for our creamy drink fix.

DSC05105

Chocolate peppermint soymilk with frozen strawberries and plain Greek yogurt.

Back to that cheese…

Jarlsberg mini

Jarlsberg recently started making minis and they sent me some to try.

jarlsberg minis

For full disclosure I will tell you that Adam didn’t like the flavor (“too mild”) but I did, and I thought the texture was great (firm bite – you could squeeze it between your fingers and the wheel held its shape – but very creamy).  70 calories per mini wheel, for a nicely portable snack.

Caramel apple plate,

DSC05126

Caramel pecan popcorn and apple slices sprinkled with caramel cinnamon sugar.

caramel cinnamon sugar shaker

I brought that adorable shaker back from San Francisco’s Japantown.

Related note – this salted caramel hand sanitizer smells beyond amazing.

salted caramel - bath and body works

Another souvenir from our SF trip, Ruby Grand dried nectarines from Frog Hollow.

DSC05166

DSC05179

Served on with vanilla shortbreads for a very fancy, only slightly Georgia O’Keefe-y snack plate.

dinner

An easy dinner for the first night I cooked after take-out for every meal all weekend.

DSC05110

Salad with honey mustard dressing, parmesan, dried blueberries, and sweet and salty pecans.

DSC05111

Eggs with sautéed onion and TJ’s canned mackerel scrambled in.  Plus turkey bacon.

DSC05115

I cooked the bacon first so everything in my eggs was infused with that flavor.

Date night at Pequeña in Brooklyn.

DSC05147

DSC05150

We started with an order of the fried sweet plantains.

DSC05154

Pretty good, but I think I would have to go back home to really get my plantain craving satisfied.

I ordered veggie quesadillas for my entrée – Pan Fried Tortillas Stuffed with Oaxacan String Cheese And Zucchini, Peppers, Mushroom, Onion, and Squash. Topped with Salsa Roja, Queso Fresco and Cilantro.

veggie quesadillas at Pequena - brooklyn

I always cook my quesadillas in a pan, but apparently “pan fried” here meant legit deep fried quesadillas.  They were tasty but also a bit ridiculous; I ate one plus the filling out of the other.

I’m writing this post before dinner on Thursday, but it’s gotten pretty late and I’m leaning towards a big salad and an old-school pb&j.  🙂

Goods And Bads; Weekend Wrap-Up

I wasted an entire long weekend being sick in bed with a cold.  Uggh!  All the signs were there – cough, sniffles, headaches, plus we ate nothing but take-out, I watched about a billion episodes of Friends, I used two boxes of tissues and a toilet paper roll blowing my nose, and I haven’t worn pants since Friday.

Thankfully I had two healthy days at work Thursday and Friday, so I do have a few good things to share…

Iced coffee with chocolate milk is always good.

iced coffee with chocolate milk

iced coffee and chocolate milk

But I also learned that Starbucks’ salted caramel pretzel bars are really good.

starbucks caramel pretzel bar

And the ‘Bucks didn’t let me down with these almonds either.

DSC05075

On the healthier side, heirloom red spinach is also good.

DSC05027

salad with heirloom red spinach

This coconut milk totally helped me feel better – for a minute or two – on Sunday.

DSC05078

And TJ’s Crispy, Crunchy Broccoli is fantastic.

DSC05018

Plus, Chobani’s new grape yogurt tastes like Greek yogurt with a purple pixie stick mixed in!

Now I’m crossing my fingers that I can make it through today with only one box of Kleenex.  Think dry thoughts for me!

Goodbye, 2014! Weekly Wrap-Up

I cannot believe that it is almost 2015!  Doesn’t it sometimes feel like life is flying by?  I hate the idea of waking up late and tired in a new year, so our big plans for NYE consist of cuddling on the couch and trying to get in bed extra early.

Posting my recap a few days ahead of schedule so I can feel like I wrapped up one final thing…

breakfast

Yummy hot chocolate and an apple.

DSC04722

After coffee, obviously.  Per usual, I was all about the coffee.

DSC04718DSC04687

This giant (I had a freebie) was an iced vanilla latte with extra espresso.

DSC04736

I have been weirdly obsessed with vanilla all week and it’s making me kind of crazy; I don’t even like vanilla!  You’ll see Greek and frozen vanilla yogurts below, and I’m pretty much going to die if I don’t find pudding this weekend.  Hopefully this craving will pass soon.

lunch

Salted caramel Greek yogurt with coconut butter and an apple on the side.

DSC04684

Plus a vegan monster cookie sandwich from Babycakes.  <– amaze!

DSC04689

And some jerky while I did my charting.

DSC04691

Tuesday I got lunch from the cafeteria that tasted better than it looked.

20141230_122327

A strange Caesar pasta salad (it was chicken and dressing with pasta AND croutons?!) topped with mushrooms and broccoli from the salad bar.

Another day I brought in dinner leftovers.

20141231_130347

Apple on the side; I had SweeTango and Kiku this week and both were great.

snacks

Chocolate!  Some nice (this Coffee & Cream bar from Theo is gritty good),

DSC04713

and some inedible.

DSC04701

Sorry, Mom, this Christmas gift was too spicy.

Adam is now as obsessed with this fruit mix as I am.

DSC04703

But no one is as obsessed with vanilla as I am currently!  Vanilla bean yogurt with some candy cane Oreos crushed in it.

DSC04730

And vanilla frozen yogurt with sprinkles.

DSC04739

This was literally the first time I’ve even ever tasted vanilla froyo.  Who orders vanilla?!  But today I looooved it.

dinner

A dinner in three parts – (1) Leftover, cold, spicy cashew chicken straight from the container.

DSC04694

(2) A tray of roasted green beans with truffle salt.  I have been finding green beans to be particularly buttery tasting lately.

DSC04708

And finally, (3) a chile relleno from Trader Joe’s.

DSC04705DSC04715

The chile looks a little rough but it was so yummy; cheesy without being too heavy.

We went with the TJ’s freezer section the next night as well.

DSC04726

Pad See Ew and orange chicken with broccoli.

DSC04734

We wouldn’t get the chicken again, but years ago we had the vegan version of it and loved it.

Tonight we were supposed to eat lentils with broccoli and coconut rice.

DSC04742That bowl is in the garbage.  Apparently I have forgotten how to cook lentils that don’t taste like dirt.  It looks like I’ll be ending the year with take-out instead.

Happy New Year’s Eve!!

Season’s Eatings; Christmas Wrap-Up

Merriment and good cheer all around!  I hope my readers who celebrate had a merry Christmas.  Adam, Webster, and I cuddled around the fireplace (Netflix had a fireplace video complete with crackles!) and had a grand time.

It’s been a busy week of eating, so instead of the typical wrap-up I’m just going to share some of the amazing seasonal goodies I enjoyed…

Lump of Coal dark holiday stout.  So good, we were impressed.

DSC04621

Yes, you see crackers in the background.  We made a cheese plate for Christmas dinner and it was just wonderful.

holiday cheese

Stumptown Winter Cheer Cold Brew split with the husband on Christmas morning.  Also so good, festive but not too spicy.

DSC04603

A big batch of cold brew which I mixed with low-fat eggnog for ahh-mazing breakfast coffees all week.

DSC04535DSC04540

Paired with holiday bars.

DSC04567DSC04591

Mint sparkling water from Whole Foods that rocked my face off.  Not as good as the strawberry variety, but a close second, especially when paired with a candy cane that my coworker delivered.

DSC04544DSC04546

Gingerbread Greek yogurt for lunch.  I enjoyed this even more than I was expecting to because it was sooo thick.

DSC04587

Awesome pasta.  Leftover snow-shape pasta tossed with turkey bacon, sautéed mushrooms, onion, and kale, and hunks of creamy blue cheese Cambozola.

DSC04560DSC04557

Egg ‘n’ Grog pie from Four and Twenty Blackbirds.  Basically creamy, sweet rum in a gingersnap crust.  Heavenly.

DSC04572

Growing up, for as long as I can remember, my family would open stockings and then eat scrambled eggs with red and green peppers before opening Christmas presents, so you know what we ate for brunch on Thursday.

DSC04618

Bonus – two off-theme snacks that were too good not to share.  The juice bar at Whole Foods is great, unsurprisingly, but the make-your-own option was surprisingly cheap.  I recommend this combo.

DSC04570

This Crispy, Crunchy, Mixed Fruit – coconut, pineapple, mango, and jackfruit – is fan-freaking-tastic!  I seriously could not stop eating it.  Crunch City.

DSC04547

Does your family have a Christmas food tradition?

Doughnuts And Coffee; Weekend Wrap-Up

coffee, coffee

So, you know how we’re obsessed with coffee?  Like, problematically obsessed?  I might like it as much as Diet Coke.  This post is going to include a coffee brewer review.  Adam, who drinks at least two cups a day, prefers his hot.  I get iced 95% of the time, but when I’m home I’ll drink it hot if it’s fresh.  Long story short – even though I mostly stick with cold-brew in my French press, we do in fact need a more traditional brewing option in the house.  So when iCoffee offered to send me an Opus Single-Serve Brewer to review, I said “yes!”

DSC04198

Please note – this product was sent to me free of charge to review.  I was not provided with further compensation for this post.  All opinions are my own.

DSC04212

According to the company, the iCoffee system uses steam to help create a nice, smooth, non-bitter flavor.  A patent-pending SpinBrew needle spins, steams and stirs the coffee inside of the single-serve cup, creating a mini-French Press effect that cannot be achieved by other brewers.

The Opus has a “Dial-a-Brew” control which allows you to customize strength and taste by choosing any brew size between 4 and 12 ounces in half-ounce increments.  It can brew 10 ounces in less than 60 seconds, so it’s nice and quick.  The drip tray is magnetic, so it can pull out to accommodate my tall go-cup.

DSC04215

They sent me a few cups to get me started.  Adam had one of the Marley Coffees and loved it.

DSC04201

The Opus is cool because it is compatible with all k-type cups, including K-Cup, RealCup, OneCup and all private label cups (unlike the Keurig system that only uses K-cups).  That said, I find single use cups to be insanely wasteful, the reason I accepted the brewer to review is because it is compatible with a reusable iCup.

DSC04206

I have made a few cups that way with the coffee we already had at home (marshmallow flavored!) and it’s all worked out quite well.  I could see how the cup could have the propensity to break but replacements are only $12.95.

In short – we are fans!  We would rate the system 4.5+ out of 5 and plan on giving it a permanent spot on our countertop.

copycat Chipotle bowls

Another thing we’re obsessed with?  Loaded rice bowls from Chipotle.  After making (multiple!) weekly Chipotle runs for the past several months it was time for us to finally make our own at home.

DSC04185

So many layers of flavor!  Including:

  • jasmine rice with chopped cilantro and lime juice stirred in
  • sautéed mushroom, onion, and green pepper
  • corn sautéed with chopped jalopeño
  • black beans reheated with cilantro and lime juice
  • chicken that was marinated with lime juice, sugar, and green tomatillo salsa
  • shredded cheese, light sour cream, and homemade guacamole

DSC04191

So darn good!

And round two the next night – topped with green Tabasco – was just as good, maybe even better.

DSC04278DSC04286

Plus we split a Warlock.

DSC04282

And a Mokaccino TCHO bar that we brought home from Blue Bottle in San Francisco.

DSC04196

Roasty good.

coffee and doughnuts

On Sunday we did a bit of a walking brunch around Chelsea in Manhattan.  Stumptown Coffee –> Doughnut Plant –> Blue Bottle Coffee –> Doughnuttery.  It was great fun!

We shared cold brew and an espresso at Stumptown.

DSC04221DSC04216

It was my first time at the Ace Hotel, which is stunning.

Then made our way to Doughnut Plant.

DSC04232DSC04231DSC04224

We shared a hazelnut chocolate doughseed which was only ok.

DSC04240

And I got a Tres Leches filled caked doughnut that was amazing.

DSC04237

Best doughnut I’ve eaten all year.  The filling was definitely reminiscent of Tres Leches and the doughnut had a great, crisp crust.   I’ve been wanting to go get this flavor since last summer and it did not disappoint.

Doughnuttery ended up not appealing to us, but we did enjoy another cold brew from Blue Bottle.

DSC04259

I told you we have a coffee problem!

city living

We may not have gotten Doughnuttery, but it brought us into Chelsea Market which we loved the crap out of.

DSC04243

DSC04246

It was gorgeous (Christmas decorations!),

DSC04250DSC04253

and there were so many tasty things that we want to try.

DSC04247DSC04256

We’ll be back.

Instead we headed uptown to Xi’an Famous Foods for hand-pulled noodles.

DSC04260

Flipping yum!  I went with the vegetarian spicy noodles and they rocked my socks off.  The chew was out of control.

DSC04263

Meanwhile Adam was positively swooning over his pork bowl.

Then we went to Rockefeller Center and stared at the tree.

DSC04271DSC04277DSC04273

I ♥ New York!
