Weekend Wrap-Up; We Loved – {fill in the blank}

I’m behind on my posts because I’ve been playing hostess for my parents.  We were quite sad to see them go Tuesday morning, but we did manage to fit a TON into their five-night visit.  We made it to SoHo, Tribeca, Park Slope, Williamsburg, Huntington, and Port Jefferson, among other places.  And we ate and ate and ate.  Rather than a full recap, I want to share some of the things we loved this weekend…

(1) – Cheeeeese

The four of us were very impressed with this cheese plate from C’est Cheese.

The Taleggio and Comte were the group favorites.

We went to Luigi’s – to celebrate my parents’ last night and Adam’s last day as an intern! – and I ordered eggplant parmesan and the three of them ordered chicken parm.

(2) – Ice Cream

Every single day, at least one of us had ice cream.  <– the perfect way to vacation

Grasshopper frozen yogurt from Emack and Bolios.

Ample Hills knocked everyone’s socks off because it is the best ice cream in the city.

(3) – Ethnic Food

We did lunch at Katz’s Deli on Friday.

The counter system and Katz’s gives me serious anxiety, but the food is totally worth it in the end.  My parents loved their matzo ball soups.

It was just so ridiculous and wonderful.  Apparently palm seeds are delicious.

(4) – Seafood

We were pretty pleased with Schafer’s in Port Jeff.

I had fantabulous lobster mac and cheese.

My big chunks of fresh lobster were in a brie and mozzarella sauce, so this one probably could get filled under “Cheeeeese” too.  With shaved Brussels sprouts.

The sprouts were raw, served with dried cranberries, green apple, candied walnuts, crumbled blue cheese, and lemon vinaigrette.

That meal was great, but it could barely compete with Luke’s Lobster.

Long Week Wrap-Up; Something Blue

My first post since last Thursday, since the week/end flew by.  Really the whole month of June feels like it’s flying by!

In spite of being busy, I did manage to photograph every single thing I ate Monday – Thursday, minus one cup of iced coffee.  <– go me!  That’s in sharp contrast to Saturday and Sunday, when I took exactly two photos:

Baked brie that I shared with a girlfriend at C’est Cheese.  It was delicious, obviously.  We were in Northern Long Island on a Saturday because our friends Kim and Dan were getting married!

Kim is seriously the classiest person I know so their wedding was, of course, amazing.  I felt too weird to take a picture of my plate at the table of college friends we didn’t know, but the food was delicious.

I spent Sunday lazing around the house, eating potato chips.  But come Monday, I got myself together.  Here’s the recap…

The food stand at my LIRR station sells iced coffee now!  This would be more exciting/a bigger bummer for my wallet except that they only have coffee creamer, no skim milk, so I doubt I’ll get it that often.

Coffee, a peanut butter & strawberry KIND bar, and a red pear that I gave up on after two bites because it was just too drippy with juice to manage at my desk.

Smoothie time.  Frozen raspberries, unsweetened vanilla almond milk, and a big scoop of Cacao Bliss.

The coconut butter froze into delicious little balls embedded throughout the smoothie.  Kind of like the old Orbitz drinks!

Chocolate malted coffee.

I stirred a scoop of malt powder into chocolate milk before mixing it into my cold brewed coffee.  This was the smartest thing I’ve ever done.

Thursday was insanely busy and my lunch plans went out the window.  When I finished my final gestational diabetes education I did eat cereal at my desk at 3pm.

Last week I bitched about my insane afternoon hunger so this week I leaned into the problem and packed smaller lunches to accommodate many (many, many) snacks when I got home.  Though these jelly beans were actually eaten at work.

The tofu was Nasoya Sprouted Tofu Plus that I topped with a mixture of Sriracha, smoked brown sugar, and rice vinegar before baking.

Adding vegetables to frozen meals is a good compromise between my desire to eat a healthy dinner and my desire to come home and sit on the couch without pants.

Weekly Wrap-Up; Snack Monster

O. M. G.  I was so flipping hungry all week, it was annoying.  I was basically starving. <– if you haven’t seen CK Louis’ SNL intro monologue yet, go watch it immediately.

I’ve flirted with loving different brands bars off and on, but throughout the years KIND products have remained some of my very favorites, so I was thrilled to try some of their new products.  The two newest bar flavors are ridiculous good.  They are all low in sugar – 5 grams of sugar or less and they don’t use artificial sweeteners – and are a good source of fiber and protein.  Adam and I were both impressed by the Caramel Almond & Sea Salt.

And Dark Chocolate Mocha Almond knocked my socks off.  New all-time favorite!  This is what I always wish mocha would taste like.

Their Grain Clusters, basically granola, are a unique blend of gluten-free oats, millet, quinoa, amaranth and buckwheat; each 50g serving provides more than one full serving of whole grains.  The Fruit and Nut Clusters made great yogurt bowls for lunches this week.

With blackberry lime Greek yogurt and blueberries plus a sour sop coconut water on the side.

On Tuesday I did a salad from the cafeteria.  Topped with pickled vegetables and a big scoop of chicken salad.

On Wednesday Adam had the day off so we met up for a lunch date!

Our meals cost only $10 each for huge plates of noodles and an appetizer.

And on Friday I packed Fage with passion fruit and clementine, nectarines, and TJ’s freeze-dried apples.

The apples were insanely good and I want more immediately.  I planned on supplementing my smaller lunch with food from the cafeteria but it was a coworker’s last day so I had cake instead.

In spite of my copious snacking, I was too hungry to properly deal with dinner during the first half of the week.

My Bare Burger turkey burger – with smoked mozzarella, fried onions, all of the pickles, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and ketchup – was amazing and I ended up ordering one two days in a row!

When I finally did get around to making my own dinners like an adult, I had an assist from Pirate’s Booty.

They just introduced a line of macaroni and cheese and they sent me some samples to try out.  The price, flavor, and texture were very comparable to other boxed mac and cheese options, but Pirate’s Booty uses organic pasta and contains no artificial colors or flavors.

We ended up with two very fancy feeling semi-homemade dinners.

Night one, I stirred roasted mini heirloom tomatoes in to the mild cheddar macaroni.

On top of spinach salads – baby spinach topped with chopped pecans, crumbled blue cheese, 1 tsp each honey and evoo, and a sprinkle of truffle salt.

Night two was another side-by-side bowl of greens and ‘cheese.

I just baked chopped kale with a can of beans, cup of whiskey maple bbq sauce, a scoop of Bone Suckin’ Mustard, and a ton of chopped garlic.

Delicious!  I plan on buying both the shells and the mushrooms this weekend so I can make this meal again.

Weekend Wrap-Up; Loki

We had a nice, low-key weekend around these parts.  Nothing major, though we did manage to get in good food, good beer, and an extra-long walk with the dog.

I spent Saturday afternoon volunteering at my hospital’s health fair discussing body fat percentages and BMI.

And Sunday we spent hours at the mall getting my dress for a wedding next weekend.

Here’s some of what I ate around shopping and volunteering…

Lunch at National Thai in Fort Greene.  We shared chicken satay.

Our noodles were perfectly done; they were nice and chewy.  And they gave us a large enough portion that even sharing the meal we had enough leftovers to make dinner the next night.

Lunch at Au Bon Pain at the mall as a reward for finding an appropriate dress.  We shared a Caffe Viennese.

It was even more delicious than predicted.  The bbq chicken was great and there was soooo much of it.

Adam loved it but this was actually too coconut-y for me.  I’m slightly amazed by that because later the same day I topped cold cereal with coconut butter and loved it.

Whenever we go to Trader Joe’s we split a coffee and/or giant soda and it makes grocery shopping feel much more like a date than an errand.

On Saturday, we were invited back into Brooklyn for a gorgeous bbq for dinner.

Our friend’s sister’s boyfriend is a chef and the food was ridiculous – also poorly lit, and therefore unpictured.  We had homemade Cesar salads, grilled radicchio, and grilled leeks and green onions with romesco sauce.

With a little love, our Thai leftovers made us a great dinner on Sunday.

Weekly Wrap-Up; Chocolate And Coffee

Forget Friday, TGIS! {thank god it’s Saturday}  This felt like the week that would never end – I had an allergic reaction to an allergy medicine, Adam and the dog both got food poisoning, and we had plumbing issue that flooded the entire apartment.  Yuck, yuck, and yuck.

I would have more pictures to share – we might have drowned our sorrows in melted cheese – but we hadn’t done any dishes for a solid week and a half so I’ve been buying lunch at work and we have been eating lots of take-out off of paper plates.  In bed.  <– we’re disgusting.

We are getting it together (finally) though.  Friday night, just before I wrote this post, Adam did a big load of dishes while I cooked us a tasty, healthy dinner.  And with any luck, by the time this scheduled post goes live I will have made it to the gym.  Cross your sneakers for me?

The “bacon” was part of a sample I received from Sweet Earth.  This vegan, non-gmo, no nitrate bacon has 10 grams of protein, 90 calories, and 0.5 grams of saturated fat per serving.  The ingredients were all things I could recognize, like buckwheat groats, coconut, and maple.  We were big fans.

Long Week Wrap-Up; The Perfect Date? I’d Have To Say April 25th.

Woah!  It’s been almost two weeks; this is going to be a loooooong post, and that’s after I cut out a whole bunch of stuff.  I left in lots of coffee, dinners in bowls, and tasty medjool dates.  I’ve had a bad case of the Blogging Blahs recently and I just can’t get myself to sit down and write.  Even though I’m not talking about it much, we have been eating fancy meals and doing fun things.  Like spending last Saturday in Manhattan…

We tried the Sriracha Chicken Sandwich—all-natural chicken with Sriracha sauce, pickled banana peppers, arugula, tomatoes and lemon aioli on a baguette.  Interesting, but not too spicy for the husband.

Everything was really yummy, but we were pretty annoyed because the location we chose was out of the new salads, both of which sounded amazing.

I will not be going back to that location, but I will be heading to ABP for a salad asap.

It wasn’t as good as the frozen hot chocolate, but it was definitely delicious.  We would plan on purchasing them again this summer.  The fudge on top was out of control.

This cookie dough candy was as good as you’d expect it to be.  <– i.e. if that sort of thing sounds good to you then you’ll probably like it but if you thought“dear god, why would you dip cookie dough in chocolate” then you’ll probably think it’s too sweet.  I thoroughly enjoyed half and then was happy to throw the rest away.

Brooklyn Farmacy is officially our new favorite place.

A family restored the 1920’s pharmacy and turned it into a soda fountain heaven.  The music, fixtures, and staff wardrobe are all throw-backs to the ’20s but in a way that is touching and kitschy rather than cheesy (think classy, not Johnny Rockets).

I had seared Catham cod with Odessa eggplant, baby bok choy, and lemon gremolata.  Apparently this was the first time I tasted cod outside of fish and chips?!  SPC is one of our favorite restaurants in the city so I know this was good, but I wasn’t a big fan.

Weekly Wrap-Up; Recipes, Redone

Hey there!  I’m a few days late with this post because the dog had a vet appointment late Thursday night.  He had to get about a million shots – we did all of his blood draws and vaccinations in one fell swoop – but was such a little trooper.  He is so freaking cute!

Things were good with the human members of the house as well.  I remade two of my old recipes this week with great success.  It was a busy but satisfying week at work.  And now my brother-in-law is here to play! I’m saving our Friday night fun for Monday’s weekend post, but here is the last week…

Crushed pineapple, frozen banana, toasted coconut, and vanilla almond milk.  I should have added nutmeg to this because that’s what I put on my piña coladas.

This salad was insane and I need to make it again immediately.  Blackberries, minneola, lime juice/zest, maple syrup, toasted coconut, and hemp hearts.

Their sweet and crunchy biscotti almond thins – which have only 100 calories per package and less than 2 grams of saturated fat – are out in two new flavors: blueberry oat and banana dark chocolate.  I was a fan of both.

I made my own to-go oatmeal bowls this week! 1/3 cup of rolled oats and 1 Tbsp of malted milk powder, plus toppings.  I took them to work in glass Tupperware and then put enough hot water (for the tea in the cafeteria) in the bowl to just cover the oats.  By the time I got back up to my department they were perfect!  I will probably still buy the packaged ones as well, but this was a very exciting development.

Honestly, I had terrible bedtime habits all week and my afternoons took a lot of coffees.  Made even more exciting by the Cookies and Cream Magic Straws from my Easter basket.

I was expecting to like this flavor the most but ended up preferring the blueberry; this was good but the banana was a tiny bit fake tasting.

My Top Ten From NYC’s Green Festival

This past weekend I attended the NYC Green Festival, the largest and longest-running festival on sustainability and green living.  This year’s festival featured nearly 100 food exhibitors specializing in local, artisanal-crafted foods, vegan/vegetarian cuisine and organic food products, a sustainable beer and wine garden, and a vegan food court.

We tried a lot of tasty things, too many to catalog –

So instead of going through them all, I’ve chosen my top ten favorites.

My Top 10 Favorites from Green Fest

1. Coco Jack coconut opener works like a charm.  You use the mallet to hammer in the jack and in just a few steps you have an opened Thai young coconut.

I opened this bad boy all by myself, without making a total mess.

2. Coconut Bliss is the best vegan ice cream we’ve ever tried.  It is made of coconut milk and is free of soy, dairy, and gluten.

Adam was in love with his chocolate salted caramel and the mint galactica was the best mint chip, vegan or otherwise, I’ve ever tasted.

3. All of the vegan options from Daiya impressed us.  Also dairy, soy, and gluten free.  Adam thought the cheddar style slices tasted fairly “real.”

And he loved all of the pizzas.

The strawberry cream cheese style spread was identical in texture to the original.  It would be great on sandwiches.

4. Dang Caramel Sea Salt Coconut Chips were crunchy and sweet.

I’ve been eyeballing up this item at Whole Foods for months, now it is actually going into my cart.

5. Explore Asian’s Mung Bean Fettuccine is gluten-free but the texture was perfect.  Each 2 oz serving has 25 grams of protein and 11 grams of fiber for 182 calories.

6. Gardein’s Mandarin Crispy Chick’n had nice texture as well.  I thought this tasted better than traditional orange chicken.  Each serving has 150 calories, 7 grams of protein, and no saturated fat.

7. Gnosis chocolate is made with {organic, vegan, kosher, ethically sourced} raw cacao.

This was one of those wonderful dark chocolates that magically has a milkiness to it.  Even Adam, a proclaimed dark chocolate hater, enjoyed the Fleur de Sel.

8. Alive and Radiant’s Hibiscus and Pink Peppercorn Kale Krunch had a fun pink tinge.

The floral and spice balanced each other nicely and these were crunchy but didn’t shatter to bits when you tried to take a bite.

9. Nib Mor is a start-up from Long Island that uses organic, non-GMO, Fair Trade and gluten-free ingredients.

The 72% Dark Chocolate Mint bar was delightfully cool and minty.  And I am practically going to die if I can’t get my hands on their drinking chocolate immediately.

10. Soom Tahini is a family business, started by the three Soom sisters.

This was the perfect note to end on because the Soom chocolate sesame butter was my favorite bite of the entire day!

This was basically a jar of liquid halvah – aka my heaven.

Apparently I’m into coconut, mint, and chocolate – not a big surprise!
