Vacation Part 1/3

We’re on vacation!  Friday through next Sunday Adam and I have 10 glorious days off together!!  We’re spending time in New Orleans and next weekend we’re doing a staycation in the city.

You can tell we’re in vacation-mode because we ate 90% of our meals out of the house and with drinks and dessert and have been purchasing all of the coffees.

Espresso at Variety.

dsc08314

New Orleans cold brew at Blue Bottle.

dsc08337

Espresso at Mixtape.

dsc08380

Iced coffee and a chocolate croissant at L’imprimerie.

dsc08377

Drinking chocolate at Devocion.

dsc08360

Dinner at Sally Roots.  Booze face.

dsc08306

I got jerk chicken ramen!  Chicken broth, yummy jerk chicken, noodles, fish cakes, bamboo, spinach, and wood ear mushroom.

dsc08309

We did dessert at Guadalupe Inn.  Drinks with meh chocolate tres leche cakes and churros stuffed with fabulous goat milk caramel.

dsc08322

Best brunch of the year at Rider.  Safe Word of the Day and Covet Thy Neighbor’s Drink.

dsc08340

The Cure = crispy rice and lentil cakes, duck confit, cilantro, hoisin, sriracha, and poached egg.  Adam had lox and fries, a combo you didn’t know how much you needed.

dsc08341

Dessert at Odd Fellows.  Crème brulee and banofee ice creams with brown butter cake crumbs on top.

dsc08346

Pretty damn good brunch at Forrest Point.  This drink was named “Fancy Pants,” Flor de Cana, Wild Turkey, Pedro Ximenez sherry, pineapple, lemon, Lapsang Souchong, star anise, cinnamon, and demerara sugar!

dsc08383

Chilaquiles!

dsc08386

Skillet s’mores with Fernet.

dsc08389

I did manage to make some dinners at home – chicken enchilada casserole.  I loosely followed this recipe from Jo Cooks, with brown rice and the addition of green chilis.  With roasted zucchini on the side and chips for dipping.

dsc08372

Other things that are making me happy… this assortment of cola-flavored goodies.  The gum was great the seltzer was too plain.

dsc08363

We found (freshly made) coquito at a bar in Bushwick!  It tastes like coconut eggnog and joy.

dsc08392

The Body Shop sent me this sweet holiday gift.  Fantastic eyeshadow and delightful smelling things.  FYI – they are offering a bunch of gift sets that will contribute to rainforest conservation, I recommend everything strawberry.

Happiest thing of all?  I’m on vacation!

This Week’s Top Five

December is here!  The last themed-food month of the year (also the last month of the year, holy crap)!

dsc08291

dsc08294

Here were the top five from this week…

{1} Christmas-flavored coffees

Eggnog iced lattes have been rocking my face off, and I was also really into the holiday-spiced sweet cream cold brews this week.

dsc08255

dsc08277

{2} Triple Draft Latte from La Colombe

Delish!  I enjoyed this can more than the store-made lattes I’ve gotten from this company.  I never did eat that pomelo though, it’s been a busy week at work.

dsc08265

{3} Eggnog overnight oats

TJ’s low-fat eggnog / rolled oats / chia seeds / cinnamon and nutmeg / sliced banana.

dsc08272

{4} Quesadillas

I ate one every day this week!  The hospital cafeteria kept having them and the one day I ate a different lunch I met up with a girlfriend for dinner and tequila after work.  Pictured is a jerk chicken quesadilla with corn, bell pepper, and cheddar and pepperjack.

dsc08279

{5} Thanksgiving leftovers pasta

With turkey, roasted brussel sprouts, gruyere, and cranberry sauce.

dsc08261

Now I’m looking forward to a month of mulled spices, eggnog, gingerbread, and peppermint.

Tastes Like Thanksgiving

I hope all my American readers stuffed themselves silly yesterday (all of my readers really!) and made good memories with family and/or friends.  Adam and I both had to work, so no festivities here, but thankfully I spent time with 3/4 of my family in St. Thomas last weekend.  P.S. No post from last weekend, I didn’t take many pictures, but I did eat johnny cake with cheese and day drink almost daily.

In spite of being kind of lame on Turkey Day, I did manage to pack my week with holiday flavors – cranberry, green beans, turkey, pumpkin, and egg nog.  Plus, apparently I’ve decided that chips are an on-theme holiday flavor!

Winter Cheer Stumptown with a cranberry clementine seltzer and a giant pomelo.

dsc08161

Cranberry turkey Wilde bar with a snap dragon apple and a cranberry cider seltzer.  <– are we appreciating the cranberry seltzers I squirreled away for this week?!

dsc08215

Holiday spiced sweet cream cold brew.

dsc08174

Thursday felt like an appropriate time to get my eggnog goodies going.

dsc08182

dsc08201

Veggies with pita chips for scooping from the cafeteria for lunch.  Tomato, green bell pepper, corn, cheddar, and beans.

dsc08171

Oats in a jar.  I dumped hot oats with chia seeds and pepitas into the last of the chocolate tahini.  Plus an ambrosia apple.

dsc08192

With more chocolate for dessert, I snacked on a cookie dough bar and a latte.

dsc08196

The cafeteria made a special Thanksgiving lunch.  I had veggie lasagna, stuffing, and green beans.

dsc08230

Tuesday night – aka the first time Adam and I laid eyes on each other since last Wednesday! – we went out for dinner before making an overdue grocery run.  I got a chopped salad with green chili lime vinaigrette, roasted corn, cucumber, jicama, and tons of avocado plus blue tortilla nachos with black beans, serrano salsa fresca, and Oaxaca queso sauce.

dsc08175

Post-dinner coffee to get me through Trader Joe’s.  The aged Sumatra is tasty.

dsc08180

And the next morning I was able to get dinner going in the crock pot – cranberry bbq chicken that knocked our freaking socks off.  In a slow cooker on low for 8 hours / chicken breast / maple whiskey bbq sauce / fresh cranberries tossed with minced garlic and a bit of sugar.  I topped my bowl with some shredded cheese.

dsc08226

Served with roasted green beans and pumpkin beers.

dsc08221

I was the only RD at work on Thanksgiving and the day ended up being pretty exhausting.  Thankfully I already had planned the ultimate lazy dinner – nachos.  I kept things on theme though!  TJ’s turkey and stuffing kettle chips / cheddar, swiss, and gruyere / turkey breast / cranberry sauce.  With green beans in thyme honey balsamic vinaigrette.

dsc08246

Served with – just under the wire – the last pumpkin beer of the season.

dsc08241

Plus a nauseating amount of baking nibbles for dessert, we are doing a belated Thanksgiving with my in-laws this weekend and I’m bringing cookies.

dsc08251

What’s your favorite traditional Thanksgiving dish?  I won’t judge you if you say nachos.

Highlights From Last Week/end

Long time no blog! Life has been busy and work has been crazy and Adam had time to spend with me last weekend so I didn’t waste a single moment on the computer.  This weekend is going to be pretty exciting too… follow me on Instagram for instant updates.

Speaking of Insta, do you follow @coffeecupsoftheworld?  We went to the pop up exhibit in Manhattan last weekend and thought it was pretty neat.

img_20161111_180636

Fitting, since coffee’s been a pretty big feature of the past week.

Here were some of the best bites…

To start, the single best bites of the month.  Milk Bar for an iced latte (my favorite in the city) and a Thanksgiving croissant – “stuffing” flavored bread filled with in-house roasted, shredded turkey, homemade gravy, and cranberry sauce!  Adam and I swooned and were more than a little sad that we shared instead of getting one each.

dsc08058

Chocolate halvah iced coffee.  Better in theory but still not terrible in practice.

dsc08118

Chocolate cherry smoothie – plain Greek yogurt, frozen cherries, vanilla almond milk, vanilla bean paste, brown sugar, cocoa nibs.

dsc08062

Brunch at Lighthouse.  With a grapefruit mimosa.  We were blown away by our first chilaquiles experience, they are like a bowl full of nachos!

dsc08052

Brown butter sprinkled chocolate chip cookies I made for a birthday party at work.  I used the dough base from this recipe and they were fantastic, the little bit of crunch from the sprinkles was perfect.

dsc08083

Ice cream from Davey’s.  A Halloween candy mashup and cookie butter chocolate chip.

dsc08043

Dinner at Ducks Eatery.  I don’t have a photo of my dinner, which was undercooked and kind of gross, but the appetizer/drinks situation was breathtaking.  Exhibit A – smoked mussels with chili oil on toast with maple, smoked butter, and chives.

dsc08036

12th st sour with egg white foam.

dsc08038

Pièce de résistance – the Café Canard – Tullamore dew, espresso, brown sugar, cream, and nutmeg.  I’m not one for hot coffee but sipping it through a cloud of sweet, foamed cream is pretty appealing.

dsc08033

Lentil bowls.  Red lentils cooked with with garlic, ginger, red bell pepper, carrot, onion, tomato paste, and turkey bacon.  Topped with cheese, hot sauce, plain Greek yogurt, and a serving of roasted zucchini.

dsc08092

Stoneridge Orchards sent me a nice package of dried fruits to try.  Their products are all organic and always produced without sulfites, artificial preservatives, colors, hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, etc.

dsc08071

Dark chocolate cherries with almonds were a work snack.

dsc08099

P.S. that snazzy glitter sleeve is part of my ongoing campaign to make my office life more enjoyable.  Fancy glass water bottle and a felt succulent.

dsc08105

The rest of the berries were paired with toasted nuts and roasted things for some “it still feels like fall” dinners.  10 out of 10 for this product review, by the way, these were by far the best dried fruits I’ve ever eaten.  Sometimes dried cranberries can be displeasingly chewy but the texture here was quite pleasant.

Warm kale salad – sauteed kale / dried blueberries / pepitas / turkey bacon / honey thyme balsamic vinaigrette.

dsc08147

Cranberry almond chicken salad – shredded chicken breast / mayo / stone ground mustard / dried cranberries / slivered almonds.  The sweetness of the cranberries was perfect with the mustard.

dsc08126

Roasted vegetable medley – butternut squash / shredded brussel sprouts / dried cherries / pecans / more vinaigrette / topped with goat cheese.

dsc08157

I’m off to enjoy a long weekend!

dsc08051

dsc08061

Biscuit Brunches

Did everyone have a good weekend?  I had two days off with the husband so mine was fantabulous.  We had two great brunches, cooked two tasty dinners, accomplished all of our to-dos… the weather even held out for us.

dsc07923

Have you registered your Starbucks card yet?  This was free.

dsc07904

This coffee – a triple shot maple iced latte from Bittersweet -was better though, probably because we bought it with a giant chocolate chunk cookie that was both doughy and crispy.

dsc07878

Brunch 1 was at The General Greene in Fort Greene.  Adam went there a few weeks ago and has been raving about the biscuits.  I thought mine tasted like cornbread.

dsc07877

I drank a Middleton – whiskey, mezcal, lime, luxardo cherry, and earl grey syrup.

dsc07869

And ordered the Huevos Salvadorenos.  Sunny side up eggs on bean and cheese pupusas with salsas, crema, and curtido (a fermented cabbage relish).  Plus yucca fries.

dsc07872

Brunch 2 was bbq at Blue Smoke in Flatiron.  FYI – that’s a cold brew coffee with bourbon maple cream.

dsc07920

I also had a mind-blowingly good Milk Punch.  It tasted like melted egg nog ice cream!

dsc07910

And a bright eyed sandwich, aka the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever eaten.  Fried egg, pimento cheese, and spicy fried chicken on a biscuit doughnut.  Runny egg and pimento cheese might be the best thing ever and the person who decided to make a biscuit doughnut is obviously a genius.

dsc07915

We checked out the new Smorgasburg location at Skylight One Hansen on opening day.

dsc07856

dsc07858

The space was gorgeous but way too hot and with too many opportunities for bottlenecks to form.  Worth it though, for this scoop of toasted nutmeg ice cream from Malai.  It was scrumptious.

dsc07864

Sunday’s afternoon treat was winter melon bubble tea with boba and grass jelly.

dsc07907

I was excited about two new recipes and actually cooked us a real dinner both nights.  Prep-work sustenance was pumpernickel pretzels and pumpkin beers.

dsc07884

dsc07893

Cooking Light’s black eyed pea cakes.  Topped with a relish of sautéed red and yellow bell peppers and turkey bacon.  Plus broccoli.

dsc07896

Sunday’s dinner was even better though, and I didn’t even follow a recipe.  I spent three hours cooking up this turkey bolognaise and the time commitment was worth it!  Best sauce we’ve ever had.  Served on orecchiette pasta with roasted zucchini on the side.

dsc07932

dsc07928

Have a great week!

Pumpkin Yogurt — Froyo — Beer

This weekend was low-key but exactly what we needed.  Inclement weather killed our Saturday plans (instead we ran some errands and caught up on tv) and Sunday I was scheduled to work.  I’ve got Wednesday off in exchange for yesterday so my workweek will be two mini 2 day blocks <– nice!

Here were the weekend’s top eats…

We made a quick trip down to Rockville Center to check out Kookaburra Coffee.  They had toasted marshmallow coffee syrup!!  Fan-freaking-tastic in my triple shot iced latte.

dsc07635

Spooky yogurt bowl.  Plain Fage with pumpkin butter stirred in, topped with chia seeds, salted peanuts, cocoa nibs, and a few candy corn.

dsc07643

I put a lemon cream popsicle in seltzer water with some whiskey.  Creamy, fizzy, and boozy, the trifecta.

dsc07629

Pumpkin pie froyo, topped with pretty much all of the dessert-y toppings.

dsc07658

Cheese plate dinner.  With dates, apple, and sautéed green beans with almonds.

dsc07652

The highlights were this paprika cheese from TJ’s,

dsc07648

and these Malbranche Mura Cha Cha matcha tea biscuits I was sent to review.  The cookies are gluten-free and vegan and absolutely bursting with matcha flavor.  Be forewarned – if you don’t like the tea you won’t like the cookie, Adam loves both.

dsc07640

Copycat Chipotle salad bowls.  Romaine // spicy salsa // shredded cheese // chipotle honey lime chicken // sautéed onion and orange and yellow bell pepper // black beans // fire-roasted corn.

dsc07665

I sipped pumpkin beer while I sautéed my chicken.  Both were delicious, 8-9/10.

dsc07661

I’ve got three different pumpkin iterations packed for tomorrow’s lunch!

Pumpkin Nice Latte

How are we more than halfway through October?  And less than three months away from the end of 2016??  I can’t handle it!  Here was this week…

I had leftover sweetened condensed milk from a recipe so I put it in TJ’s coffee concentrate.  Then I spent the entire morning certain I was going to die but also overcome with glee.

dsc07595

This Target brand salted caramel hot chocolate is delicious.  Apparently I was into my morning sugar this week.

dsc07542

Yogurt bowls for lunch.  All on theme, thank you.  Chobani pumpkin with pecans and pumpkin spice cheerios and frosted min wheats.  Plus an Asian pear.

dsc07529

TJ’s pumpkin yogurt with more cereal and an apple.

dsc07565

Noosa pumpkin with pumpkin spice granola and pumpkin seeds.

dsc07592

TJ’s caramel apple yogurt with Heritage Flakes and sliced almonds.  This was the best of the apple yogurts, fyi.

dsc07628

It was a snack-heavy week, here were the highlights –

dsc07543

dsc07549

dsc07578

dsc07622

Related – a new pretzel shop opened right above my train and it is a problem.

dsc07577

Most dinners this week were weaksauce.  Adam and I both get a bit bummed out as the weather cools down and we’ve had a hard time motivating ourselves in the kitchen.  Case in point – I ate nachos two days in the row.

dsc07570

At least these nachos had turkey breast on top.  And eggs with spinach in them on the side.

dsc07573

Another night I made a super simple turkey and cheddar toasted sandwich.

dsc07586

Inspiration did finally come, in the form of a box of lemons.  Limoneira sent me a sample of their citrus.  Limoneira Company is a 124 year old international agribusiness dedicated to sustainability.  Their lemons are quite tasty, almost sweet.

dsc07554

I made Lemon Brown Sugar Chicken.  Served with roasted broccoli and lemon pepper cauliflower rice.

dsc07616

Also Dulce de Leche Lemon Popsicles.

dsc07600

Cross your fingers for me that the weather’s nice in NYC today, if there’s no rain I’ve got a fun activity planned.

It’s Pumpkin Month!

Pumpkin Month is here!  On the Emily calendar September is for apples, October and November are for pumpkin, November and December are for eggnog and gingerbread, and December is for peppermint.  This month’s on-theme stash is especially bountiful.

xzibit

Here are some highlights from the weekend…

My favorite coffee combo – espresso and chocolate milk.  I hate “mochas” because the syrup is gross but this iteration of chocolate and coffee is the best.

dsc07140

Brunch at Benchmark.

dsc07130

I had a roasted vanilla lemonade with vodka.

dsc07128

This unassuming omelette was actually stuffed with duck confit and goat cheese.

dsc07133

My best lunch came from the Starbuck’s refrigerator case.

dsc07223

We cooked two tasty dinners.  Broccoli salad based on this recipe from Cooking Light.  We roasted the broccoli and sauteed the onion and served the salad warm, which I highly recommend.  I also swapped maple for honey and rice vinegar for cider vinegar.

dsc07203

Served with white bean and basil dip with orange bell peppers and potato chips.

dsc07194

Plus a disappointing cider.

dsc07208

And I loosely followed Rachel Ray’s recipe for pumpkin and sausage pasta.

dsc07228

Served on butternut squash pasta shaped like tiny pumpkins!!

dsc07239

With roasted honey sriracha smoked paprika cauliflower.

dsc07242

And our last and favorite cider, just in time for pumpkin beers.

dsc07245

Non-food wins included…

I started reading One More Thing, Stories and Other Stories and now I’m completely obsessed with B.J. Novak.  The collection of stories fits together in ways that are surprising, moving, and sidesplittingly wry.

dsc07221

Watching the dog put himself to bed, complete with covers and his head on a pillow.
