It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas! Weekend Wrap-Up

It’s only 10 days ’til Christmas!  And Hannukah starts tomorrow!  And it was Adam’s 29th birthday on Thursday!  We had a lot to celebrate this weekend.  The last three days have been fabulous.  Lots of great meals, several at fancy restaurants, and they were usually followed by dessert!

Friday

Friday was a regular work day for me, but I had the excitement of knowing that the husband was coming to pick me up at the end of the day.  The switch to an electronic medical record system has gone fairly well, by the way; fingers are still crossed.

I ran out the door late in a flurry so breakfast came from Starbucks.

DSC04309

Iced latte and a fruit pouch that was not great.

Lunch was pretty much the same thing, since I didn’t pack anything and made it down to the cafeteria late in the day.

DSC04314

Iced coffee + chocolate milk, an apple, and a Gingerbread Larabar.

Plus some of the RDs came up to visit me – they liked my tiny office! – and brought me candy.

DSC04311

I don’t know where my Russian coworker gets those caramels but they are great.

Adam met me after work and we spent the evening in the city.  Our dinner reservations weren’t until 8:00 so we did dessert first on a visit to the Winter Village at Bryant – Brrrryant! – Park.

DSC04316DSC04331

We got a dulce de leche cookie,

DSC04326

then warmed up with a lusciously thick drinking chocolate – and a marshmallow! – from the from the Max Brenner stand.

DSC04328

OMG.  We have been buying and hating hot chocolate since San Francisco but this liquid gold was exactly what we’ve been searching for. Super thick and rich but not sickeningly sweet.

We had a mile-ish walk to dinner and I’m terribly sad that it was too cold for my camera because I was basically dying at the gorgeous lights along the way.

DSC04333

Tavern on the Green, Adam’s pick for his belated birthday dinner, was seasonally stunning as well.

DSC04351DSC04355DSC04336

I got a Queens cocktail – Bootlegger vodka, Velvet Falernum, sorrel hibiscus liquor, pomegranate molasses, and lemon juice.  Yummy, and perfectly balanced.

DSC04342

We shared the scallops with citrus butter, capers, and fried shallots to start. I’ve been having a love affair with fried shallots lately.

DSC04344

None of the entrees jumped out at me so I ordered two veggie sides, crimini mushrooms with blue cheese and basil and broccoli rabe with lemon, garlic, and sea salt.

DSC04346

It was a great night.

 Saturday

We had errands to run in SoHo on Saturday, so we parked in Brooklyn and took the train in and spent the day in the city.

There might have been booze in my coffee.

DSC04359

I bought a snickerdoodle lattee from Dunkin and added a healthy pour of Rumchata (aka the snickerdoodle shot) and it was damn good.

While we were in Brooklyn, we split a sardine Bahn Mi from Bahnmigos.

DSC04362

It was great! The little me who grew up in the Caribbean shunning seafood (whyyyy??) can’t believe I eat things like sardines and scallops now.

We did linner (super late lunch) at Freemans Restaurant.

DSC04370

Blue Ridge Fizz = apple brandy, maple, allspice, and champagne.  Freemans is our favorite brunch spot in the city and their cocktails are always magnificent.

DSC04364

I got poached eggs with tomato stewed kale, crispy shallots(!!), and hollandaise on sourdough toast.

DSC04369

My eggs ended up being overdone but I forgave them because the kale was so good.

We went next door to Morganstern’s for dessert.

DSC04374

We shared a cup of American egg custard and durian banana ice cream. Soo creamy! And the flavors were very true to life.

After a bit more exploring, we did round 2 at Sugar Sweet Sunshine.

DSC04376DSC04380

I got a shot of The Nog – pumpkin cake layered with eggnog pudding and whipped cream.

DSC04384

SSS never disappoints.

Sunday

Sunday was all about hanging out at home.  We would have stayed in our pajamas all day, had my dinner plans gone better.  We cuddled, watched tv, and got up some holiday decorations.

I woke up starving from our early dinner the night before so I made a big plate of eggs for breakfast.

DSC04388

Scrambled with chopped jalapeno, corn, sliced turkey, sour cream, and goat’s milk cheddar.

DSC04390

Plus Silk soy nog on the side.

DSC04393

Instead of toast, I snacked on a bag of salted caramel popcorn.

DSC04395

The plan for dinner was pasta with sun-dried tomato pesto but something went horribly wrong and my pesto was pretty much inedible.

DSC04398

Instead, we salvaged our veggie side,

DSC04400

and ventured out for Thai, stopping for mint chocolate froyo along the way.

IMAG0800DSC04402

Much better. Enjoyed in front of Scrubs – which we are rewatching for the millionth time – it was a great end to a great weekend.

Doughnuts And Coffee; Weekend Wrap-Up

coffee, coffee

So, you know how we’re obsessed with coffee?  Like, problematically obsessed?  I might like it as much as Diet Coke.  This post is going to include a coffee brewer review.  Adam, who drinks at least two cups a day, prefers his hot.  I get iced 95% of the time, but when I’m home I’ll drink it hot if it’s fresh.  Long story short – even though I mostly stick with cold-brew in my French press, we do in fact need a more traditional brewing option in the house.  So when iCoffee offered to send me an Opus Single-Serve Brewer to review, I said “yes!”

DSC04198

Please note – this product was sent to me free of charge to review.  I was not provided with further compensation for this post.  All opinions are my own.

DSC04212

According to the company, the iCoffee system uses steam to help create a nice, smooth, non-bitter flavor.  A patent-pending SpinBrew needle spins, steams and stirs the coffee inside of the single-serve cup, creating a mini-French Press effect that cannot be achieved by other brewers.

The Opus has a “Dial-a-Brew” control which allows you to customize strength and taste by choosing any brew size between 4 and 12 ounces in half-ounce increments.  It can brew 10 ounces in less than 60 seconds, so it’s nice and quick.  The drip tray is magnetic, so it can pull out to accommodate my tall go-cup.

DSC04215

They sent me a few cups to get me started.  Adam had one of the Marley Coffees and loved it.

DSC04201

The Opus is cool because it is compatible with all k-type cups, including K-Cup, RealCup, OneCup and all private label cups (unlike the Keurig system that only uses K-cups).  That said, I find single use cups to be insanely wasteful, the reason I accepted the brewer to review is because it is compatible with a reusable iCup.

DSC04206

I have made a few cups that way with the coffee we already had at home (marshmallow flavored!) and it’s all worked out quite well.  I could see how the cup could have the propensity to break but replacements are only $12.95.

In short – we are fans!  We would rate the system 4.5+ out of 5 and plan on giving it a permanent spot on our countertop.

copycat Chipotle bowls

Another thing we’re obsessed with?  Loaded rice bowls from Chipotle.  After making (multiple!) weekly Chipotle runs for the past several months it was time for us to finally make our own at home.

DSC04185

So many layers of flavor!  Including:

  • jasmine rice with chopped cilantro and lime juice stirred in
  • sautéed mushroom, onion, and green pepper
  • corn sautéed with chopped jalopeño
  • black beans reheated with cilantro and lime juice
  • chicken that was marinated with lime juice, sugar, and green tomatillo salsa
  • shredded cheese, light sour cream, and homemade guacamole

DSC04191

So darn good!

And round two the next night – topped with green Tabasco – was just as good, maybe even better.

DSC04278DSC04286

Plus we split a Warlock.

DSC04282

And a Mokaccino TCHO bar that we brought home from Blue Bottle in San Francisco.

DSC04196

Roasty good.

coffee and doughnuts

On Sunday we did a bit of a walking brunch around Chelsea in Manhattan.  Stumptown Coffee –> Doughnut Plant –> Blue Bottle Coffee –> Doughnuttery.  It was great fun!

We shared cold brew and an espresso at Stumptown.

DSC04221DSC04216

It was my first time at the Ace Hotel, which is stunning.

Then made our way to Doughnut Plant.

DSC04232DSC04231DSC04224

We shared a hazelnut chocolate doughseed which was only ok.

DSC04240

And I got a Tres Leches filled caked doughnut that was amazing.

DSC04237

Best doughnut I’ve eaten all year.  The filling was definitely reminiscent of Tres Leches and the doughnut had a great, crisp crust.   I’ve been wanting to go get this flavor since last summer and it did not disappoint.

Doughnuttery ended up not appealing to us, but we did enjoy another cold brew from Blue Bottle.

DSC04259

I told you we have a coffee problem!

city living

We may not have gotten Doughnuttery, but it brought us into Chelsea Market which we loved the crap out of.

DSC04243

DSC04246

It was gorgeous (Christmas decorations!),

DSC04250DSC04253

and there were so many tasty things that we want to try.

DSC04247DSC04256

We’ll be back.

Instead we headed uptown to Xi’an Famous Foods for hand-pulled noodles.

DSC04260

Flipping yum!  I went with the vegetarian spicy noodles and they rocked my socks off.  The chew was out of control.

DSC04263

Meanwhile Adam was positively swooning over his pork bowl.

Then we went to Rockefeller Center and stared at the tree.

DSC04271DSC04277DSC04273

I ♥ New York!

Cookie Monster

An old-school full-day wrap-up post?  Why not!  I felt the urge.

I cannot even tell y’all how excited I was this morning that today was Friday.  Adam has the weekend off and even though he has studying to do I’ll get to sit next to him on the couch!  I still needed coffee to help me face the day though.

DSC04155

Non-fat iced latte (always iced!) and an apple.

I clearly wasn’t getting up early enough to pack a lunch, so I got food from the cafeteria today.

DSC04156

A half sandwich – love that my caf. offers that – of tuna salad, provolone, lettuce, red onions, and honey mustard, on whole-wheat.

DSC04159

Plus baked onion rings.

Dessert was candy that my co-worker sweetly brought me.

DSC04160

A thank you for the gift I brought to her baby shower on Tuesday.  I am excited for her, but also a little bummed because she’ll be out on maternity leave soon and she’s one of my favorite people at work.

We have tons of leftovers from our take-out streak the past week so we kept thing simple for dinner.

DSC04170

Buffalo chicken pizza.

DSC04183

And green papaya salad from a new Thai place in Great Neck.

DSC04175

The salad was flavorless and disappointing but it was my only shot at produce so I ate it anyway.

And cooooookies while we watched “Bones.”  The last caramel chip plus cookie creamer in my (half-caf) iced coffee.

DSC04164DSC04168

Both good, obviously.

My weekend plans include a long overdue visit to the gym, Christmas shopping, grocery shopping, and a doughnut spree in Manhattan if the rain holds off.

Have a happy weekend!

The Girl In Sonoma {San Francisco}

Our last two days were spent enjoying the beauty of California wine country.  And eating.  So much eating!  We were trying to pack in as much fun as possible on our last full day and we went a little crazy ordering food.  We definitely didn’t finish everything shown, but we did eat quite a lot.

We started Friday with coffee,

DSC03958

and fruit and bread.

DSC03956

We split a Satsuma, an unpictured banana, and a rosemary roll from ACME Bread Company.

We saved the sourdough roll for an amazing lunch of bread, cheese, and chocolate.

DSC03972

DSC03984

Plus earl grey panna cotta for dessert.

DSC03979

We had the Cowgirl Creamery Mount Tam fresh from the source because we were there for a history lesson and cheese tasting.

DSC03960DSC03966DSC03968DSC03962DSC03970

Best tour of the trip!

After cheese, it was time for wine, with a tasting at Matanzas Creek.

DSC03985DSC03988DSC03992DSC03997

The grounds were gorgeous and the wine was de-lish!  We liked it so much we even bought a few bottles to bring to Thanksgiving.

Next up was beer (and more cheese!) at Lagunitas Brewing Company.  Brown Shugga was my favorite, unsurprisingly.

DSC04001

They had pretzels out for palate cleansing between tastes,

DSC04004

but we also got a big plate of cheesy nachos.

DSC04009

This was the point in the day where I was getting a little too full!

But we forged ahead with a trip to Bouchon Bakery for a butterscotch éclair.

DSC04011DSC04017

And finally settled in at The Girl and the Fig for an outstanding dinner.

DSC04028DSC04024

Those light green olives were shockingly good.

I had to get a lavender mojito, it was made with Cruzan rum!

DSC04031

We started with a cheese plate with apple, house-made fig cake, spiced nuts and baguette.

DSC04033

We choose a P’tit Basque sheep’s milk, Bohemian Creamery’s The Bomb goat’s milk, and a Bleeting Heart Moolicious Blue.  Because we had to fit cheese into every single meal that day.

Adam and I shared for dinner.  Local mushroom raviolo with sunchoke purée, truffle pesto, local mushrooms, and chicories.

DSC04038

And the house-smoked trout sandwich with farm egg salad, caper aioli, pickled red onion and dill.

DSC04042

Both were absolutely amazing.  The sauce under the pasta and the pickled red onions on the trout totally made the dishes.

We got an after-dinner drink with Firelit coffee liquor and Sailor Jerry rum.

DSC04047

And had dessert that was my favorite dish of the entire trip.  Chocolate and salted fig caramel trifle with cocoa nibs and Italian meringue.

DSC04049

Adam was amazed by the nibs and I was obsessed with the marshmallowy meringue.  Plus we came home with a jar of their salted fig caramel.

We had such a wonderful dinner at The Girl and the Fig that we ended up going back for brunch on Saturday!  We met up with a medical school friend who is doing his residency in Fresno and he said The Girl was his favorite Sonoma spot.

Fig Fashioned.

DSC04054

Mussels and frites for the table, which I was totally brave about and ended up loving.

DSC04056

And the best grilled cheese sandwich of my life.

DSC04057

We left completely stuffed; the three of us were barely able to get coffee, hours later.

DSC04061

Our flight was a red-eye and it didn’t leave until after 10 pm so we were able to spend the whole day catching up.  Our friend chose to spend his one day off for the week with us so we were thrilled to make the most of it.

DSC04062

A perfect end to a perfect vacation!

San Francisco Recap, Day 1 & 2

If you follow me on instagram you’ve already figured this out, but {surprise!} I’ve been in San Francisco for the past week.  Adam had the last two weeks of November for vacation again this year so I took the time off as well.  We spent week 1 on the West coast and now we are headed off to Ohio for Thanksgiving family time.  So far it’s been great!

I have a ton to share from SF – we basically walked and ate all day, every day – so I’m going to try to keep myself from being too wordy, but I’ll still need to split this up into three posts…

We had non-stop flights each way which was awesome.  Monday we flew out around noon so we had a little time at home in the morning and then with the time change a full afternoon of vacation. Plus there was free television and movies on the plane which was basically the most exciting thing ever.

DSC03666

Plane food.  Coffee, plus a white cheddar and pumpkin butter sandwich and tasty pretzel sticks.

DSC03659DSC03663

The time flew by and before we knew it we were struggling up super steep hills on our way to dinner.

DSC03672

We had a late reservation so we stopped for bubble tea first.  Brown sugar ice milk with egg pudding and grass jelly.  Apparently I love egg pudding.  And grass jelly.

DSC03674

And we got to keep our cool bottles.

Dinner was Waterbar, a sustainable seafood spot right near the Bay Bridge.

DSC03680DSC03676

I got a cocktail with Buffalo Trace bourbon, Heering cherry liqueur, Benedictine, and orange zest.

DSC03682

We split a leek and parsnip soup with smoked trout that was very yummy (I had lots of good trout this trip).

DSC03686DSC03685

And for dinner I did pan-roasted sablefish – caught in Fort Bragg, CA – with globe artichokes, butterball potato, grapefruit, nicoise olives, and chervil.

DSC03688

I adored the artichokes, but sadly didn’t like my fish at all.  This was the only meal that I didn’t love on the trip.  My food was practically floating in a watery sauce and I hate that.  Adam, on the other hand, thought my dish was great and basically licked his plate clean.  He enjoyed his ono with uni butter so much that I still definitely consider the meal a win.

And we did have brown sugar brioche bread pudding, with butterscotch pecan ice cream, for a fabulous dessert.

DSC03691

’twas a great first night.

Tuesday morning we headed out for a run in the neighborhood around our hotel.  We ended up happening on the Palace of Fine Arts.  It was beyond gorgeous.

outside the palace of fine artspalace of fine artspalace of fine arts 2

I am so glad we got to see it.

We had a beautiful morning exploring Fisherman’s Wharf.

DSC03693DSC03719DSC03703DSC03700DSC03704DSC03707

Including a stop for a fresh bowl of crab chowder.

DSC03714DSC03709

We took the ferry for a tour of Alcatraz.

DSC03722DSC03725

Then we spent the afternoon at the Ferry Building Marketplace.

DSC03726DSC03751DSC03754

We loved it there and went back almost every subsequent day.  I was crazy jealous of people buying fancy mushrooms.

DSC03747DSC03749

We shared a greens 2 juice from Pressed.

DSC03739

An iced coffee with milk and sugar from Blue Bottle.

DSC03763

And a Duck Yeah sundae – vanilla ice cream on duck fat pecan pie – from Humphry Slocombe.

DSC03755DSC03759

I thought the ice cream was great, but not as good as Ample Hills.  Adam looooooved it.

We also hit up Slanted Door’s Out the Door for Vietnamese iced coffee and buns.

DSC03765DSC03766

Chicken bun for me.

DSC03771

We had dinner reservations at SD later in the week and this first taste got us very amped up.

We spent the rest of the afternoon walking around the piers and staring at the sea lions.

DSC03777DSC03778DSC03782DSC03785

Snacks included salt water taffy,

DSC03786

chunks torn off a loaf of sourdough from Boudin,

DSC03792DSC03794

and a very lackluster drinking chocolate from Ghiradelli.

DSC03799DSC03804

The chocolate was literally the only dish that didn’t knock our socks off all week, a pretty good track record if you ask me.

We were exhausted from walking around all day so we did Mexican take-out and hotel room cable tv for dinner.

DSC03807

Mushroom nachos for me.

DSC03808

It was a great first two days!!

Wednesday and Thursday coming tomorrow…

Weekend Top Three

{1} I made my Buffalo Chicken Baked Pasta.  But I made this version cheesier.

DSC03589

Like, soooo cheesy; I accidentally spilled in most of the bag of cheese when I meant to do an extra sprinkle.

DSC03608

I also added more buffalo wing sauce, a bit more spinach, and swapped in whole-wheat pasta, ranch, and lean ground turkey for chicken breasts.

DSC03658

DSC03592

It was delicious.

{2} We soothed our fiery mouths with pumpkin beers.

DSC03613DSC03582

All four ended up being fantastic.  I wasn’t expecting to love the ales because I tend to prefer stouts and ciders, but they were some of the best pumpkin brews of the season.

{3} I found on-point bubble tea right next to my work.

DSC03579

One of the doctors told me about it and I might have to give her my firstborn.  Awesomely chewy boba and tons of flavor options (they even had pumpkin!).  Shown above is strawberry rose black tea with tapioca and rainbow jelly.

Weekly Wrap Up

As of this morning, the cold of winter is finally here. Ugh. But I had a good final week of thin hoodies and no gloves. Good eats too! I did a lot of train eating – bars for breakfast, guava cheese empanadas… – but the LIRR was too packed for stealthy photography. Here’s what I did capture…

breakfast {coffee, coffee, coffee}

Never hot, I don’t care if it drops below zero, you can pry my iced coffee out of my cold, dead hands.

Chameleon cold brew with the last of the honey almond milk, which I loved.

DSC03502

Espresso! With milk and sugar.

DSC03529

I tried the chestnut praline latte from Starbucks. I really liked it.

DSC03540

Marshmallow cold brew.

DSC03546

lunch

Turkey, sharp cheddar, and pumpkin butter sandwich on a pumpkin spice English muffin.  With an apple and bbq chips.

DSC03499

Plus the last cookie.

DSC03544

Maple raisin oatmeal with a red pear.

DSC03506

And an afternoon treat of Turkish coffee that a coworker brought in.

turkish coffee

Dannon Creamery cherry cheesecake (yum, much better than the strawberry!) with chopped strawberries and blueberries. TJ’s kale chips. I passed the kale around the breakroom and my coworkers all said they might buy some themselves.

DSC03549

Dannon Creamery vanilla pudding with strawberries, plus the last of the kale chips and bbq chips. This was the best store-bought pudding I’ve ever tasted. And Adam stole the milk chocolate pudding and loved it.

DSC03536

I tried, and did not love, the new Coke.

DSC03559

dinner

When I got home on Monday, dinner was waiting in the crockpot for me.

DSC03516

Chicken with bbq sauce, smoked brown sugar, and fresh cranberries. I ate mine on a big bed of spinach.

DSC03522

We had salted caramel cheesecake and a yummy pumpkin beer for dessert.

DSC03513

Pizza and salad.

DSC03571

A giant bbq chicken slice from Pinos. The crust on these is amazing, super fluffy and light but still crunchy.

DSC03574

Plus Whole Foods hot bar – garlic broccoli, pickled cucumber, and salad with veggies on top.

DSC03576

We also got hot chocolate that we’d been excited about all week – supposedly it was made with ganache – that ended up being a big cup of hot milk.

DSC03567

You cant win ’em all.

No Sleep Till Brooklyn; Weekly Wrap-Up

Oh my gosh, Brooklyn is so freaking great!  <– I could probably just stop here, that pretty much sums up the salient points of this post

I was a little all over the place this week so I don’t have a ton of pictures to share, but Adam and I did go out to two amazing dinners that I need to rave about.  Other than that, I have about 30% of breakfast/lunch/snacks.

The husband worked several overnight shifts this week and I took advantage of my alone time by making the super adult decision to stay up until 3am on a work night catching up on the entire new season of “Criminal Minds.”

Here are some snippets of cafeteria breakfasts…

DSC03345

DSC03380

That second thing was some biscuit/pastry Western omelet hybrid.  Strange, but not bad.

And of course, there were many {many} coffees.

DSC03343

Yogurt bowl lunches…

DSC03376

DSC03400

KIND Banana Nut Clusters with my blackberries and butterscotch peanut butter with my raspberries.

And snacks at my desk…

DSC03347

DSC03382

I also bought the new peppermint cookie chocolate bites from Starbucks and they were great.

Now on to the good stuff, two amazing, fantastic, fantasmic, socks-rocking dinners in Brooklyn!

#1  Berlyn

DSC03350DSC03353

This space was gorgeous.  I couldn’t get any good shots of the décor (or the food for that matter!) but our table felt like it could be sitting in a clearing in some German forest.

I ordered the Hemingway Daiquiri and it ended up being the best cocktail I’ve ever been served.

DSC03355

The menu listed Caña Brava Rum, Luxardo Maraschino, grapefruit juice, and lime juice, but I swear that I could also taste cinnamon in there.  I liked it so much I kept us out late ordering a second round after dinner.  Adam’s beer was amazing as well; I don’t remember it’s name but it positively reeked of honey.

We shared a house-made pretzel to start,

DSC03357

which came with the best honey mustard I’ve ever tasted.  <– noticing a theme here??  I wouldn’t say that Berlyn is the best restaurant I’ve ever been to but many things on their menu were certainly the best ever in their categories.

Adam ordered pork schnitzel for his entrée so I decided to try two small dishes.

DSC03360

Potato pancakes that came topped with smoked trout and pickled cucumbers.

DSC03362

And fried Brussels sprouts with a pine nut aioli.

DSC03363

Best fried Brussels sprouts we’ve ever had and the aioli was seriously indescribably good.  Adam and I both were gasping at how yummy it was.

The dessert course didn’t sound quite as terrific to us so we headed over to Four & Twenty Blackbirds for the best espresso in Brooklyn.

DSC03366

And came home with slices of pie to eat in front of “Brooklyn 99.”

DSC03369

My salted honey slice was legit.

#2  Thistle Hill Tavern  <– from the owner of Talde and Pork Slope

I ordered a New Old Fashioned, which was made with Four Roses, Laird’s Applejack, maple bitters, lemon,  and brown sugar.

DSC03384

So good, though bourbon is always good.

I started with the Kale Taco Salad.  Kale dressed in salsa verde with cheddar, spicy pickled vegetables, and a fried tortilla.

DSC03387

This was the best kale salad I’ve ever eaten (<– I’ll stop now, promise!).

Dinner was the fish and chips with their famous salt and pepper fries.

DSC03393

I don’t know why I keep ordering fish and chips because I never eat much of the fried fish, but this was definitely the best version (sorry!) I’ve ever had.

Adam swooned his way through a slice of maple bourbon pumpkin pie,

DSC03394

but I held out for the best ice cream in the world, Ample Hills.

DSC03396

Good God.  “No Sleep till Pumpkin” = coffee ice cream with pumpkin gooey butter cake and underneath was “PB Gets Fluffy” = marshmallow ice cream with chocolate flakes and homemade peanut butter cookie dough.  Just fabulous.  Neither of us could believe how good the pumpkin coffee flavor was.

What is the best restaurant in your city?
