Bites And Frights

How in the world is it November???  I promise not to spend the rest of this year talking about how the year is running out, but it really is blowing my mind.

On the agenda before January?  Christmas shopping, finding the perfect day planner for 2017, and plans for three out-of-town trips right in a row.

Presently, I’m waiting for Adam to get home so we can go to brunch.  And these were the highlights from the past week…

I actually did a pretty good job with capturing things this week minus a plethora more of nachos and iced coffees.  I tried a new blend from Birch.

dsc07758

Espresso and a KIND bar.

dsc07760

Coffee, chai latte, and an almond croissant.

dsc07846

I found a white chocolate seltzer for my Halloween lunch.  It didn’t have much flavor, but my oatmeal was good – with chia seeds, chocolate-covered cacao nibs, and candy corn, plus I stirred in pumpkin puree and Greek yogurt cream cheese at the end.

dsc07754

Other lunches centered around this sweet box of samples from LÄRABAR.  They offered me a chance to try their newest product – BITES, “truffle-like bites made from real food to satisfy your sweet craving.”  The bites are vegan, gluten-free, kosher, and only use Fair Trade Certified™ cocoa and coffee.

dsc07770

We tried three of four flavors (I’m saving mint chocolate for December, aka Peppermint Month) and were big fans.  Cherry Chocolate Chip was enjoyable but not our favorite, I thought Double Chocolate Brownie was fudgy and great next to coffee, and Adam loved the fact that Chocolate Macaroon was coated in coconut flour.

I had a serving of brownie bites with a Noosa pumpkin yogurt and some gum drop grapes(!!) for lunch.

dsc07777

Coconut macaroon went with plain yogurt with yummy chocolate tahini on top.

dsc07833

This week’s snack highlights were nut and seed centric.

dsc07853

dsc07805

dsc07815

Also, of course, candy.  Another product review, Magic Candy Factory sent me a super exciting sample –

dsc07812

That’s my name!  I think this company is really exciting, you can choose from 100’s of shapes, or write a custom message, and MCF will 3D print you a gummy.  The candy is vegan (no dairy, no gelatin), gluten-free, nut-free, and kosher.  Most importantly, it’s delicious.

dsc07824

We tried sublime strawberry and Adam declared this his favorite gummy candy of all time.

Orange and black nachos for Halloween.  TJ’s pumpkin chips topped with cheddar, olives, black beans, and shredded chicken.

dsc07788

Plus pumpkin beers and Peeps.  Warlock was fantastic this year.

dsc07794

dsc07802

For the rest of the week, I made a big batch of pumpkin seed pesto.  Served on pizza with cheddar and sliced turkey, I promise it was tastier than it looked.  With a pea sprout salad.

dsc07840

And we tossed the rest of the pesto with pumpkin-shaped pasta, parmesan, shredded chicken, and roasted cauliflower.  Almost nothing is better than pesto pasta.

dsc07850

Enjoy your weekend!

Top Ten Last Week

dsc07683

{1} Kobrick Coffee

I stepped up my espresso game with their housemade chocolate milk.  Adam and I were both swooning after every sip.

img_20161029_113134

{2} Pumpkin yogurt bowls

2% Fage with pumpkin puree and pumpkin butter, cinnamon, slivered almonds, and pumpkin spice granola.  With an Asian pear.

dsc07675

Plain Siggi’s with pumpkin x2, pumpkin spice cheerios and frosted mini wheats, and a few candy corns.  With a gingergold apple.

dsc07691

Pumpkin Chobani with cereals and another apple.

dsc07721

{3} Bobwhite Counter

Fried chicken sandwich with pickles and pimento cheese.

dsc07735

{4} Pumpkin Smoothie

We make at least one every October.  Pumpkin puree, plain Greek yogurt, cinnamon, maple syrup, and vanilla almond milk.

dsc07702

{5} Xzibit “Pimp My Ride” style Reese’s

Reese’s stuffed with Reese’s Pieces.  My peanut butter cup obsession usually does not extend beyond Justin’s minis but I am bewitched by these; the bit of crunch takes the cups to a whole new level.

dsc07692

{6} Molly’s Cupcakes

They have a whole slew of gooey stuffed cupcakes.

img_20161029_124731

Cake better was perfection!

dsc07741

{7}  Let’s Pretend This Never Happened

Unsurprisingly, Jenny Lawson (aka The Bloggess)’s 1st memoir did not disappoint.  I added her 2nd book to my Christmas list less than halfway through.

dsc07730

{8} Nachos

I turned my copycat Chipotle bowl leftovers into nachos.  Nachos > salad bowls.  Tortilla chips, cheddar cheese, black beans, corn, sautéed onions and peppers, and shredded chipotle honey lime chicken.

dsc07697

{9} C’est Cheese

Adam and I had a weekday off together and we spent several hours of it on the phone dealing with our retirement accounts.  We desperately needed booze and cheese afterwards so we headed to Port Jefferson for lunch.  Baked brie with raspberry jam.

dsc07714

Beer flight – Post Road Pumpkin / Telekinesis sour / Framboise / Imperial Biscotti Break stout.

dsc07711

Plus a Spanish salad with mandarin oranges, Manchego, olives, and a honey tarragon vinaigrette.

dsc07718

{10}  David Pumpkins

Bless you, SNL, this is my new favorite thing.

{Bonus}  Be sure to check out SaveTheDay.Vote, Joss Whedon’s super PAC that produces short PSAs about the importance of voting (for Hillary).  The subject matter is sobering but somehow the videos are all still laugh out loud hilarious.  Whedon is already my role model, and I am so impressed with all of the celebrities to chose to participate.

P.S. Happy Halloween!

The End Of Apple Month

This week I…

  • Tried two new products to review {see below}
  • Drank 6 cups of coffee
  • Worked 3 of 4 days and spent Wednesday in Manhattan
  • Loved the newest season of “The New Girl,” laughed out loud at “NCIS,” and felt totally over “South Park”
  • Ate three different plates of nachos

dsc07037

highlights…

Sparkling Ice offered to send me some of their new Essence Of sparkling water line.  No sodium, no sugar, no artificial sweeteners, just carbonated water and natural flavors.  10/10, they were very refreshing and I would definitely buy them on my own.

dsc07025

I enjoyed Lemon Lime and Tangerine alongside my coffee.

dsc07029

dsc07090

Caramel apple yogurt with cinnamon Chex and freeze-dried apples.

dsc07014

Caramel apple oatmeal bowl.  Oats with chia seeds, apple, cinnamon, candied pecans, and Booterscotch M&Ms.

dsc07053

Buttermilk pie yogurt bowl, with a Cara Cara.

dsc07119

This “Red Hook” paleta from La Newyorkina was the single best thing we ate all month.  Super-strong coffee with cookie dough from Baked.

dsc07110

Peking Duck Bing at Madison Square Eats.  I knew if I kept trying these crepes I’d find one I loved.  This one was stuffed with peking duck, scrambled eggs, hoisin sauce, and chili paste.

dsc07115

Lunch on a sunny sidewalk at Delicatessen.

dsc07095

We shared an everything salmon burger,

dsc07106

and the Mac Quack with duck confit, white cheddar, fontina, and caramelized onion.

dsc07103

But the best bites were the Duck, Duck, Goose Dumplings – smoked duck breast, duck confit, foie gras, cherry chutney, brown butter vinaigrette, and sliced almonds.

dsc07099

We’ve tried Pepperidge Farm Swirl Breads in the past and loved them (p.s. they have caramel apple and pumpkin spice seasonal flavors!!) but they recently upgraded the products with a wider slice and more visible swirl and offered to send some my way.

dsc07048

We loved the new version too.  I typically only buy us whole-wheat bread and save the white stuff for a treat, and these swirl breads definitely taste like a treat.  Plus, at 80 calories a slice with 3 grams of protein and only 4 grams of sugar, the nutritional profile isn’t too bad.

dsc07057

I made epic sweet and savory grilled cheese sandwiches out of the Raisin Cinnamon Swirl.

dsc07070

Bread with butter // blackberry jam // smoked sliced turkey // sharp cheddar and light Havarti cheese // turkey bacon // and a hot skillet.

dsc07077

Plus roasted brussel sprouts on the side.

dsc07072

And Smackintosh Hard Cider (from our trip to Traverse City) to drink.

dsc07082

Pumpkin Month starts tomorrow!

Palm Seed Fun

This post is running a little late because I am too – I have the day off!  Working last Sunday earned me a long weekend today.  It’s actually an extra-long weekend because I’m off Monday as well, I’m going to Ohio tomorrow to visit my grandma.  Today, I’m going to have some fun with Adam and Webster.

Highlights from this week…

I didn’t snap any iced coffee photos this week, but I promise it was consumed in substantial quantities.  There’s a chance I stayed up far too late watching Road Rules on YouTube one night.  <– not worth the exhaustion, that show spent way more time on relationship drama than I had remembered.

Apple oatmeal, with an Asian pear.

dsc06852

My Filipino coworker brought me in some palm seeds and I bought them to good use.  Chia pudding with palm seeds and banana.

dsc06805

Yogurt with palm seeds, Luxardo cherries, Cherrios, and an orange.

dsc06819

Another treat from the Philippines, polvoron, or powdered milk candy.  They were fantastic, crumbly and milky in such a pleasing way.

dsc06844

More candy, Justin’s peanut butter cups (I’m still obsessed with these) and a milk popping candy.  Sparkling water and diet coke are two of my favorite things and when you drink them together – as in at the same time, not in the same cup – they both taste even better.

dsc06834

Other snacks included apples we picked ourselves.

dsc06810

And the best microwave popcorn we’ve ever popped.  This tasted almost as good as stove-popped.

dsc06869

We kept dinners super simple this week.  Leftover smoked trout casserole, eaten cold out of the pan.

dsc06827

Salmon salad sandwiches – canned salmon with mayo, mustard, and pickle relish – on toasted TJ’s quinoa bread.

dsc06854

dsc06862

My most complicated night involved potato vareniki which cook in about 5 minutes.  Tossed with shredded rotisserie chicken / sautéed celery / garlic kale / and a sauce made of cream cheese and chicken stock.

dsc06882

I’m off to go start my day off!

Last Week’s Top Six

Better late than never?  I spent my weekend in a malstrom of giant bowls of stovetop popcorn and NCIS episodes and couldn’t pull myself away to blog.  I’m currently watching NCIS but it will probably be awhile before I eat any more popcorn!

Last week’s top six…

{1} Australian iced coffee.

DSC06002

Cold brew concentrate, chocolate milk, ice, and a scoop of ice cream.  I started several mornings this way.

{2} Product samples from Viki’s Granola.

DSC05928

They sent me some tasty granola to review.  Banana walnut was my favorite.  The granolas are gluten-free and have </160 calories per 1/4 cup.  The texture was unique, they were much softer and less clumped that most of the other granolas I’ve tried.

Very nice in my yogurt lunches.

DSC05936

DSC05992

DSC05998

DSC05974

Especially with sugar crunch grapes.

{3} Compartes Birthday Cake Bar.

DSC06019

White chocolate with sprinkles and three types of vanilla bean, it tasted like cake!  These bars are so worth the $10 price tag, I want to try more.

{4} Pasta salad, served cold.

DSC05980

Whole wheat bow ties / spinach pesto / heirloom baby tomatoes / baked tofu with balsamic / cubes of swiss and sharp cheddar.  We almost never eat cold pasta salad and this felt fun and summery.

{5} Pimento cheese nachos.

DSC06007

Our favorite meal, with a southern spin.  Zapp’s sweet pimento cream cheese chips, shredded chicken, red bell pepper, and candied pecans.

{6} Fantastic oven-fried chicken.

DSC05950

We made a version of this chicken from A Cozy Kitchen and it blew our freaking minds.  With a garlic butter sauce instead of the spicy one.  We plan on making another batch this week.

DSC05953

Birthday Week Eats

I turn 31 this Sunday so this week is my birthday week.  My parents timed their summer visit for this weekend so I’m off of work today and Monday and I’m pretty sure the four-day weekend will be the best gift I’ve ever given myself.  I also pulled out this stash of cake flavored stuff I’ve been hoarding all year –

DSC05588

The Airhead wins as my favorite, it has sprinkles in it!

My other eats included…

Coffee.

DSC05599

We’ve had some big changes at work – that squeezed even more work into each day – and on top of them one of my coworkers has been out all week and I’ve been responsible for covering both intensive care units.  <– I have needed so much coffee.

DSC05654

DSC05641

DSC05602

DSC05670

I didn’t have time to pack lunch one day and I cobbled together a pretty great reuben-ish wrap sandwich in the cafeteria – sliced turkey, swiss, cole slaw, pickles, and thousand island.

DSC05657

Yogurt lunches reign supreme.  Plain Siggi’s with blackberries and coconut butter.

DSC05635

Cake yogurt with KIND maple granola and blackberries.

DSC05593

Have you done Chobani’s “Find Your Flavor Soulmate” flow chart?

chobani_flowchart_x2_v09

What combo does your heart sing for?  My answers lead me to sweet and spicy but as much as I love some sweet with my heat spiced yogurt just doesn’t appeal to me.  Sweet with sweet is much more my speed.  Like this Almond Coco Loco Flip that knocked my socks off with how fantastically creamy it was.

DSC05662

Speaking of sweet… I am still completely obsessed with Justin’s peanut butter cups, in all forms.

DSC05606

And I made the David Lebowitz chocolate chip cookies so my parents could try them, not that there are many left!

DSC05673

Best meal of the week – I made a variation on this recipe with turkey bacon, chopped spinach, and fresh mint.  It was still delicious as cold leftovers.

DSC05623

Salad night.  Romaine with ranch / turkey bacon / shrimp / carrots / tomato / fresh mint / swiss.

DSC05646

Paired with chips and dip because I’m fancy.

DSC05645

I picked my parents up from the airport last night.  JFK is a nightmare so we stayed in Long Island afterwards and grabbed dinner at a little diner near their hotel.  I actually got a pretty yummy Greek meal.

DSC05674

DSC05678

Salad with spinach pie.

Have a great weekend!

DSC05565

Duck, Duck… Bacon!

This week Adam and I tried duck bacon and fell head over heels in love.

DSC05380

It’s probably a good thing that that package cost $14 or we’d be eating duck bacon for every meal!

Our other flavor theme was lavender caramelized almonds.

DSC05378

Love Our Nuts sent me a giant bin (<– free sample) and I put them to good use.

DSC05368

In a pan over medium-high heat dry toast 2 cups of raw almonds for 2-3 minutes until starting to brown.  Add 1 Tbsp evoo, 2 pinches of salt, and 1/4 cup lavender sugar and cook 1-2 more minutes, stirring regularly, until the sugar is fully melted and the almonds are coated.  Spread almonds on a greased cookie pan or sheet of tin foil until fully cooled before storing.  If you want to try this recipe at home Love Our Nuts is actually hosting a giveaway right now, all you have to do is visit their social media pages.

I also had a lavender doughnut from Doughnut Plant.

IMG_20160705_080315

For this week’s coffee I cold brewed my Birch cold brew blend.

DSC05361

The tasting notes say caramel and chocolate finish so I stirred a dollop of caramel into this cup because why not?

DSC05411

I also had a really fantastic latte from Gorilla.

20160705_081701

And a Starbucks latte that didn’t actually pair that well with savory trail mix.

20160705_172827

Yogurt bowls for lunch.  Plain Siggi’s with chopped plum and lavender almonds.

DSC05405

And fig with chopped plucot and KIND maple chia granola.  Plus a so-so kombucha from Trader Joe’s.

DSC05424

Chocolate x2.

DSC05415

A coworker and I got tasty drinks at Grand Army after a particularly long day.  This Trans-Siberian tasted like an adult Capri Sun!  I also had a fantasmic peach sour beer.

IMG_20160706_173925

The night Adam was at work I ate Mexican leftovers in bed.

DSC05420

But the other nights were duck bacon extravaganzas!

DSC05386

Like this duck bacon, double cream gouda, and egg toasted croissantwich.

DSC05399

Served with a spinach salad with lavender almonds (dressed in evoo and lavender honey and lavender salt!).

DSC05394

Killer cheese plate.

DSC05429

Envy apple, baby carrots, orange and yellow bell pepper, lavender almonds, duck devils on horseback, gouda, and sharp cheddar.

Have you tried duck bacon yet?

Weekly Wrap-Up

Loves of Late

Family time: My parents were taking a quick vacation in Philadelphia this week and I took a mini road trip and drove up to spend the day with them!  I love the Magic Garden mosaics.

DSC05235

DSC05237

TV: Rizzoli and Isles is on it’s final season and we have been loving it.  It is the most unrealistic of the cop shows that I enjoy but it’s also very funny and heartwarming.  All seasons are streaming on Hulu and I highly recommend going back to the beginning and giving it a watch.  Also, the first three episodes of Documentary Now.  Adam and I thought the 1st season went quickly downhill but the very first episodes are comedy gold.

Coffee: the beans we bought at Birch are fantastic, even when brewed in our crappy coffee pot at home.

DSC05200

DSC05270

Every time I go to Reading Terminal I hit Old City Coffee.

DSC05239

Also in Philly, I finally tried La Columbe.

DSC05251

Stuff: My new planner!  I love new planners in general because I’m a dork but this one has shiny cut outs on the front. (from Blue Sky, fyi, but I couldn’t find it listed on the website)

DSC05273

I also just bought a shirt with cut outs on it, apparently that’s my summer trend.

DSC05280

The day I visited my parents we walked around the city all day and it was just so darn hot that we ended up buying me a new outfit so I could take the world’s most refreshing shower before dinner.

Eats

Coffee, duh!  More cups than were shown above, obviously.

Terrible picture of the yummy pecan pastries a coworker brought it.  She cut back on sugar which can leave baked goods overly tough but these ended up tasting like a pastry-scone hybrid.

DSC05210

Yogurt bowl – plain Greek with chopped red plum, granola, chia, and sprinkles.

DSC05195

Oatmeal bowl – with dark chocolate cacao nibs, chia, and coconut butter.  Plus an apple on the side.

DSC05262

Chia pudding.  The fizzy coconut water was horrible, btw.

DSC05294

When in Philly, (chicken) cheesesteak.

DSC05248

Pocky stick snack.

DSC05282

Turkey cheese roll ups.

DSC05289

Dinner at Devon Seafood with my parents.

DSC05255

I had the bouillabaisse.

DSC05260

Chipotle night, midweek road trips tire you out.  My burrito was stuffed with chicken, pinto beans, peppers, cheese, sour cream, corn salsa, and lettuce.

DSC05300

Best for last, the one thing I actually cooked myself!

DSC05220

White quinoa / red lentils with lemon, tomato paste, and ginger / roasted zucchini and garlic sautéed mushrooms.

DSC05226

Have a great weekend!
