Spring, Sprang, Sprung

NYC is warm approaching hot and positively bursting with beautiful flowers. Of course my highlights from the week include an array of spring-y foodstuffs.

I enjoyed this passion fruit & hibiscus simple syrup in a variety of applications – diet coke (7/10), iced matcha (7.5/10), iced coffee (8.5/10), plain skyr (9/10).

Plan skyr bowl with blueberries, lolliberry strawberries, yuzu curd, honey almond granola, and edible flowers.

Whole-wheat bread with vanilla granola butter and strawberry guava jam. This was actually the best snack of the week.

These jalapeño cheddar Corn Nuts were delicious and almost too spicy for me.

Hu dark chocolate with vanilla crunch. It’s rare to find a vanilla chocolate though I wish the flavor was a little more prominent here (honestly the bar was a bit salty).

Noosa honey vanilla bean frozen yogurt gelato (so good!) with yuzu curd, strawberries, purple sprinkles, and edible flowers.

Important shout out – I am still completely head over heels for these Ben & Jerry’s s’mores bites.

This week’s dinner them was — SALAD. It was such a success, each night was better than the last! Potato salad. Baby potatoes that I boiled, smashed, topped with evoo and extra-sharp cheddar, and baked until crispy / celery / cucumber / smoked sockeye salmon and salmon candy / dressing – plain skyr, mayo, yellow mustard, dijon mustard, honey, vinegar, sesame oil, mustard powder, paprika, and celery seed.

Greek salad. Romaine / balsamic vinaigrette / celery / crispy-baked chickpeas / feta / Trader Joe’s tabbouli / TJ’s dolmas.

Fancy salad. Romaine / dressing – skyr, dijon mustard, yellow mustard, maple syrup, vinegar, and lemon juice / sugar bomb grape tomatoes / sauteed asparagus / Wildwood black truffle and sea salt baked tofu / extra-sharp cheddar / homemade pretzel bread croutons.

BBQ salad. Romaine / homemade ranch – skyr, mayo, dijon mustard, vinegar, lemon juice, ranch seasoning / tomatoes / orange bell pepper / fresh corn / Corn Nuts / cheddar / baked chicken breast tossed with Stubbs BBQ sauce. <– best of the week

Nood Beach

Good things from the past week – noodles for dinners, an open can of sweetened condensed milk, the weather in NY finally feels like Spring and I went on my 1st outdoor run of the year! Highlights included…

Creamy lemonade iced matcha. Fresh lemon, lemon seltzer, and SCM.

Cheesecake smoothie – cottage cheese, water, and frozen cherries and strawberries. My smoothies got so much better once I realized I could use water as a mixing liquid.

Tropical smoothie – frozen mango and pineapple, coconut milk, vanilla protein powder.

Bars, in blue. The Bobos was only good, the Barebells was great.

This drink was root beer, vodka, and SCM; it’s kind of a choose your own adventure as to whether you think I’m a monster or a genius.

I love every IPA from Abomination Brewing and this candy-inspired Love Letters from Hell was obviously no exception.

These are the best tamarind balls Adam and I have ever tasted and I wish I could remember where I bought them.

It was weird being in Vegas because so many places were NYC-transplants (also Miami, honestly) but we also came across a few favorites from Hawaii too. I was very happy to come home with these Honolulu Cookie Company cookies (in java and guava).

Coconut curry chicken stoup. Brown rice noodles / a mix of shredded chicken breast and chicken thighs / collard greens sauteed with scallion, garlic, rice vinegar, fish sauce, and soy sauce / light coconut milk, red curry paste, chicken broth, and minced ginger.

Green(s) noodles with tofu. Rice noodles / extra-firm tofu baked crispy with pepper and Sichuan pepper salt / spinach sauteed with garlic and evoo food-processed with water, tahini, soy sauce, and gochugaru.

Veggie vermicelli (I know this looks horrible but it was actually the best meal of the week!). Whole-wheat vermicelli / roasted cabbage, red bell pepper, and scallion / nuoc cham / shredded chicken tossed in black sesame paste, peanut butter, brown sugar, and soy sauce / chili crisp.

Burgers And Blossoms

What a fun weekend – we ate and saw so many good things! And took several long walks (including a bridge walk!). NYC is stunningly beautiful right now!

Some highlights…

Orwashers. So exciting that they have a location out in Long Island near us now! We shared a morning bun and an Edith’s tahini frozen coffee.

Plus a bagel with lox and dill cream cheese.

Tozzo for “coffee with a bottom,” aka an iced latte with a layer of pistachio cream.

Janie Bakes makes the best cookies in the city in my opinion, hands down. This blueberry lemon pie crust cookie was perfection. We also tried an (unphotographed) croissant cookie; I’ve been avoiding them but their special was s’mores and I couldn’t resist. I assumed correctly that I would rather have a cookie and a croissant separately but it was pretty damn good.

Bar Francis. We loved it here; the space, service, and cocktail menu were all wonderful. We shared some great drinks. A Balaklava (pistachio-infused tequila, Licor 43, walnut liqueur, rose water, and honeycomb) and the Sappy Child (vodka, Douglas Fir liqueur, Saler’s, Suze, honey, and citrus, carbonated)

Plus the best drink of the weekend, the No Fly List (moonshine, pineapple, lime, Suze, peanut butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg).

And a smoked salmon dip.

Arden. I got a drink with bourbon, cherry bounce, vanilla, and coke and a Painkiller.

We shared the yellowtail crudo with tangerines, yuzu, mint, and serrano.

The bok choy with nuoc cham caramel.

And the brussels sprouts with XO sauce.

And I got a cheeseburger – brioche bun, American cheese sauce, morales, kimchi, and slaw with salt and vinegar fries. The fries and the crudo were the standouts.

Haven. Extra-spicy Bloody Mary.

We shared the Reuben flat-bread with pastrami, sauerkraut, gruyere, thousand island dressing, and carraway seeds.

The cheeseburger – Pat LaFrieda double patty, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, and thousand island dressing on an Orwashers bun. Nice fries.

And miso soup with matzoh balls. These were the best matzoh balls I’ve ever eaten; they were super buttery and a bit peppery.

Neither burger makes my top ten list but overall it was a 10/10 weekend!

Americana Idiot

My other song title option was “Like It Was 1980,” and if you don’t get that reference you are sorely missing out! This week’s dinner theme was Americana/nostalgia. We made Salisbury steak, tuna pasta salad, macaroni and cheese, and chili and grilled cheese sandwiches!

Highlights from the past four days include…

After-school snacks. Apple + peanut butter (I didn’t have mini marshmallows to make smiles!). This was a Sugar Bee apple and it was wonderfully crisp and sweet.

Important note – the Whole Foods unsweetened crunchy peanut butter is wonderful. It is some of the best I’ve ever had and certainly outranks the other options at this price point. Just peanuts and salt.

This week’s yogurt bowl combo was plain skry, blackberries, peanut butter, and Nature’s Path honey almond granola.

Love Corn bbq corn nuts. These have a very satisfying consistency.

Junior Mints minis are fantastic. They are like the popping boba of chocolate candies.

Fun in sparkling waters – Target caffeinated cherry cola and Ruby tart hibiscus. Both were an 8/10.

I had never actually tried Salisbury steak before but I loved it. We loosely followed this recipe but I used ground turkey and way more mushrooms. Plus roasted purple and Japanese sweet potato and zucchini.

I did not use Italian dressing in my tuna pasta though that is how I grew up eating it. Whole-wheat macaroni, canned tuna, roasted zucchini, edamame, extra-sharp cheddar, and balsamic vinegar. Maybe Italian is the way to go though? Adam and I both went back and topped our bowls with hot sauce.

Macaroni and cheese muffins. I used extra-sharp cheddar instead of parmesan and added mustard powder. Plus roasted broccoli.

Plus we had bbq Wilde chicken chips.

Chili = ground turkey, celery, white onion, fire-roasted tomatoes, fire-roasted green chiles, kidney beans, chicken broth, evoo, salt, pepper, and smoked paprika. I topped my bowl with plain yogurt and hot sauce. Plus I made amazing grilled cheese sandwiches; the filling was a mixture of extra-sharp cheddar, marinated artichoke hearts, mayo, white pepper, mustard powder, and a pinch of sugar.

What’s With Today, Today

So many things to celebrate this week, the eclipse and Rex Manning Day were both on Monday. We are on vacation starting tomorrow and I am READY – it took a lot of little treats (TM) to get through this week.

Some highlights…

This week’s yogurt combo – plain skyr, giant blackberries, and cookie dough granola.

I brought this birthday cake drink syrup back from my trip to Kingston. Not bad but too fruit-forward for my tastes. I tried it in iced coffee, iced matcha, lemon seltzer, and diet coke.

Chocolate-covered frozen cheesecake bites (9/10).

Dark chocolate peanut butter bites (10/10). <– I can’t remember where I found these but I would rebuy if I found more.

Our King’s does a fantastic chocolate cake with ganache, marshmallow, and cookie dough (11/10).

A Moon Pie to celebrate the eclipse. All I could find last-minute was a protein bar Power Pie which was actually delicious.

And I, of course, celebrated Rex Manning Day with pizza, brownies, and an Empire Records rewatch.

Roast’s special of the week – brisket, mac and cheese, crispy onions, and bbq sauce on a roll.

Homemade veggie and meatball bowls. Roasted cabbage, baby cauliflower, Japanese sweet potato, and red bell pepper / turkey meatballs with panko, fish sauce, half and half, ginger, urfa chili, gochugaru, and egg / peanut sauce with chunky peanut butter, soy sauce, rice vinegar, Sriracha, sesame oil, sugar, and warm water / green onions and sesame seeds.

Poppy Plum Puff

Highlights from an exceptionally yummy week —

This week’s coffee situation was some combination of one-all of these salted caramel things with iced Bones Coffee Jamaican Me Crazy. Also one day I added coconut milk!

Berry smoothie with frozen dark cherries, fresh blueberries, and vanilla protein powder.

Many good yogurt bowls this week. This one was plain skyr with watermelon plum, blueberries, Heritage Flakes, and salted caramel granola.

Plain skyr with plum, poppy seed filling, and orange mandarin passionfruit jam.

Trader Joe’s maple pancake corn puffs are perfectly savory and sweet.

Related – we adore how savory the dough is in these poppy seed cookies.

Turkey-cheese roll up – Lavash bread with smoked turkey, extra-sharp cheddar, garlic hummus, and leftover roasted green beans.

Baked tofu and roasted broccoli with homemade ranch dip (mayo, Greek yogurt, lemon juice, and ranch seasoning). The tofu was Trader Joe’s super-firm that I marinated in pickle juice and coated in pulverized potato chips, roasted seaweed, sesame seeds, and panko.

A very loose but tasty take on callaloo made with frozen spinach and broccoli (plus yellow onion, scotch bonnet pepper, ginger, urfa chili, coconut milk, crab, and turkey bacon).

Topped with pickled ginger and this soursop hot sauce from home.

And paired with rum and Coke slushies, my greatest boozy creation.

I made a great rillete (aka fish dip) in the food processor with canned sockeye salmon, smoked trout, mayo, Greek yogurt, lemon juice, chili crisp, smoked paprika, and celery seed. Scooped with orange bell pepper, cucumbers, 12 Tides everything kelp chips, and Trader Joe’s spicy tempura seaweed snacks.

Jalapeño popper turkey burgers (I mixed the cheese in and these were fantastic!), roasted cauliflower, and a big pile of crispy baked fries. Plus an array of dipping sauces (ketchup, a quick honey mustard, and leftover ranch).

Halva Good Time

Some things from this week…

I celebrated the 1st day of Spring with a Starbucks iced espresso with white chocolate sauce and lavender cold foam.

See also – Trader Joe’s Meyer lemon yogurt. I bulked it up with some plain Greek with halva pecans, blueberries, and blackberries on top.

These Seed + Mill halva-coated pecans are delightful.

Yuzu matcha spritzer because I am a woman obsessed.

Bars on bars. The Barebells one was so creamy!

We pulled the last of our Christmas coffee cake down from the freezer.

Brinner. This cornmeal pancake recipe was a winner. Plus turkey bacon, sumo mandarin, and berries (and, of course, maple syrup!).

Chicken sandwiches – Whole Foods’ Early Bird multi-seed bread, dijon mustard, mayo, brie, and chicken (thin sliced breasts marinated in Greek yogurt, lemon, honey, and harissa, then sauteed). Plus maple tahini broccoli salad (I swapped in dried cherries and roasted pumpkin seeds) and pickles.

Green With Satisfaction

Some weekend highlights…

St. Patrick’s Day iced latte. A Shamrock vanilla protein shake that I dyed green plus Starbucks espresso and pistachio sauce. I also topped it with gold sprinkles! This tasted fantastic.

Hometown Bakeshop‘s insane tres leches cake iced latte.

I also brought home a s’mores bar and a blondie that were some of the gooiest and most decadent desserts we’ve ever tasted.

Will I ever get tired of yogurt bowls? Unlikely! Plain Greek with blueberries, blackberries, Heritage Flakes, and chocolate chips.

We both were fans of these lemon frosted Trader Joe’s animal crackers. Crispy without being too crunchy and the lemon was well-balanced.

Loaded salad from Burrito Blvd. With chicken, zucchini, tomato, corn salsa, and cheese. I added ranch dressing and hot sauce at home. Plus chips and guacamole.

We got take-out from Brooklyn Dip & Burger and their steak sandwich blew my mind. Thin sliced black angus ribeye, cheddar, and five spice dusted fried onions on a buttery brioche hero. Plus a mountain of fries that were crispy and well-seasoned. We got a bunch of their appetizers and loved those too!

Brie-bimpap bowls, inspired by Cafe Maddy. I bought light Brie at Trader Joe’s and it tasted like nothing and thus added nothing to the bowl but my bibimpap base was a 10/10. Brown rice / terrible brie / this sauce / crispy tofu – extra-firm tofu that I shredded and marinated (gochugaru, sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar) overnight before baking at 400 degrees for 40 minutes / sauteed brown beech mushrooms / roasted zucchini / frozen chopped spinach sauteed with chili oil, sesame oil, and sesame seeds / fried egg.

Sushi roll bowl. Leftover brown rice reheated with gochugaru, Sichuan pepper salt, seaweed, and butter / Sriracha salmon salad made with Kewpie, Sriracha, and hot smoked salmon / spicy cucumber salad / pickled ginger.
