It’s Beginning To Taste A Lot Like Valentine’s

dsc09482

As long-term blog readers know, the Emily holiday theme-food calendar is pretty packed.  There’s Apple Month (September) and Pumpkin Month (October into November), and November/December are the only time of year I’ll eat eggnog, candy cane, and gingerbread.

My mom recently asked me why Valentine’s Day and Easter don’t get any love?  I decided it’s lame that only August – December get theme flavors, so brought two new holidays into the party, albeit likely with less fervor.  Valentine’s Day (February) gets chocolate-covered cherry and cinnamon, and Easter (April) gets coconut and lemon.

Here was this month’s themed-food stash:

dsc09425

Those goodies will be the main content of this post, along with a few other things that I LOVED (<– staying on theme).  It works out to be work lunches/snacks since this week’s dinner situation was beyond bleak – 1. nachos 2. Chipotle 3. frozen meal from Trader Joe’s 4. Adam and I got into bed and fell asleep before 8pm.

Chocolate cherry yogurt, chocolate cherry cashew KIND bar, and a Sumo mandarin.

dsc09476

Valentine’s trail mix with chocolate hearts, dried dark sweet cherries, and roasted pecans.  Plus a Junami apple.

dsc09474

2% yogurt with blackberries and muddy buddies.

dsc09461

Vanilla bean yogurt with tangerine, blackberries, vanilla granola, and citrus crumble cake.

dsc09436

A coworker just came back from the Philippines and she replenished my stash of these amazing powdered milk candies.

dsc09454

Best bite sip of the week – very vanilla iced coffee.

Do you have any romantic plans for next Tuesday?

Walking Weekend

I didn’t watch any of the game, but my weekend sure was super.  Saturday morning Adam and I woke up extra early and went into the city to watch the sunrise.  We parked in Dumbo, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, wandered around lower Manhattan, and then walked around Chelsea.  Then we took the subway to Park Slope, did a long loop through our old neighborhood, and walked back through Fort Greene to our car in Dumbo.  Throughout the day we ended up walking >11 miles.

Of course, the minute the sunrise started getting gorgeous my camera started dying/getting too cold to function.

dsc09373

dsc09366

dsc09370

We punctuated our walk with stops for coffees and desserts, but most of it went unphotographed due to my technical difficulties.  Highlights included a dulce de leche iced coffee from Terremoto turned into an affogato with a scoop of goat milk tahini ice cream from Seed + Mill.

I did manage to get a shot of breakfast #1, at the Oculus.  We split a “hell of a nerve” from Joe and the Juice – banana, elderflower, and strawberry juice.

dsc09375

Plus pastries and lattes at Eataly (with sips of Italian cola).  I got a cream filled croissant; the pastry wasn’t flaky enough for me but the cream was fantastic and I ate it out with a spoon!

dsc09377

And I had to Instagram breakfast #2 at Santina.

dsc09378

I had a fantasmic egg sandwich.  Fluffy egg on a soft bun with tons of fontina cheese and green chiles.  I pretty much swooned after every bite.

img_20170204_113946_302

Friday’s breakfast was a smoothie.  Frozen strawberries with plain Greek yogurt and chocolate-mint soy milk.

dsc09352

And Sunday I made an egg sandwich at home.  Smoked gouda and a fried egg on a brioche bun.

dsc09386

Another highlight was dinner at Pig Beach.  We loved their vibe and their great 90’s music playlist <== we listened to “Pony” by Ginuwine!  There weren’t a ton of menu options for me so I ordered some sides and then got some from Whole Food’s hot bar later on.

dsc09361

Macaroni and cheese, yummy purple cole slaw, and buckeyes for dessert.  Plus a 10/10 vodka soda and an amazing drink with vodka, honey, and rosé.

dsc09363

I may not have watched the Super Bowl, but I definitely spent Sunday making and eating on-themed foods!  We had nachos with buffalo chicken on TJ’s honey butter chips.

dsc09391

Muddy Buddies – made with Biscoff cookie butter instead of peanut butter because I’m bringing them into work at there’s a nut allergy.

dsc09398

And I used a fun product sample from Moore’s Marinades to make my buffalo chicken baked pasta.

dsc09415

I used their Blue Cheese Buffalo Wing Sauce – instead of putting in hot sauce and blue cheese separately – and my pasta came out great.  P.S. heat haters, this sauce is more tangy than spicy and I recommend it for wimps too.

dsc09419

Have a super week!

The End Of The First Month Of The New Year

I’m two weeks late and about a hundred pictures short, but here, finally, is a (bi)weekly wrap up for the end of January.  I blame a bout of the cold, a string of loser dinners, and a case of the mid-winter blues for my lack of timeliness and photo-taking-enthusiasm.

Gaps aside, here were some eats from the past two weeks…

{rated within their category; i.e. the yogurt bowl is an 8 out of 10 compared with other yogurt bowls not compared other dissimilar items}

Green monster from the cafeteria.  They sometimes set up a smoothie bar at the rotating station.  I chose spinach, strawberry, mango, and coconut water.  8.5/10

dsc09313

Chocolate iced coffee.  8/10

dsc09308

Work snack – an apple and coconut caramel bar.  The score here is for the Thai Coco coconut milk drink, which was creamy and sweet.  9.5/10

dsc09304

Soursop yogurt with blueberries and vanilla granola.  8/10

dsc09324

Turkey reuben-ish sandwich from the cafeteria.  Sliced turkey, swiss cheese, pickles, spinach, and cole slaw on a whole-wheat wrap.  Plus french fries dipped in 1000 island.  6.5/10

dsc09344

Cola kombucha.  6.5/10

dsc09257

This Milka Oreo candy bar didn’t have as much cookie in it as I wanted.  6/10

dsc09253

But these TJ’s sour gummies are the best gummy candies Adam or I have ever tasted.  10/10

dsc09317

Biscuit breakfast sandwiches for dinner.  Buttermilk biscuits (<– I don’t recommend this recipe, the biscuits had no flake) / maple Sriracha mayo / smoked gouda / fried egg.  6/10

dsc09286

Pumpkin soup.  Roux, canned pumpkin, and chicken stock with sautéed onions, carrot, and maple chicken breakfast sausage on the bottom.  This didn’t turn out as well as I was expecting it to, the salt and pepper pumpkin seed brittle I sprinkled on top was by far the best component.  5/10

dsc09271

Escarole and white bean skillet with (turkey) bacon and artichoke.  7/10

dsc09294

dsc09298

Creamy turkey pasta.  Ground turkey sautéed with garlic, browned mushrooms, and oven-roasted tomatoes, tossed with sour cream, and whole-wheat pasta.  7.5/10

dsc09348

I’ve got some yummy things planned for this weekend so hopefully the next post will be slightly less lame!

Warm Weekend Winners

It was 50 degrees outside this weekend!  Twice!!  I had an absolute blast pulling out my flip flops and spring jacket.

Conveniently, my favorite things from the past three days make one complete day’s worth of meals…

{coffee}

Maple Shay, a nonfat iced latte with maple syrup from Brooklyn Roasting Company.  I need to put maple into more of my lattes, it really is fantastic.

dsc09205

{breakfast}

Brunch at Colonie.  I had the dandelion greens salad – with walnut, anchovy, tarragon, parsley, and a poached egg.  It was actually kind of terrible, beyond bitter, but thankfully Adam shared his duck hash with me.

dsc09212

And dessert was good!  Eggnog panna cotta with bourbon and blood orange.

dsc09215

{lunch}

Whole Food’s hot bar.  Clockwise from the bottom left – macaroni and cheese, buffalo-style seitan, roasted squash, roasted carrots, and honey Sriracha brussel sprouts.  Whenever I hit a hot bar I try to pick a protein, mostly veggies, and the cheesiest starch available.

dsc09218

{dinner}

Tandoor Chef recently offered to send me some free-product coupons so I could try their frozen entrees.  I’ve loved their Pad Thai for years so I readily accepted.

dsc09224

Adam reports that his chicken tikka masala was loaded with meat and that the sauce was creamy and well seasoned.  My channa masala was tasty as well, and quite filling; there were 10 grams of protein and 14 grams of fiber for a 380 calorie serving.

dsc09230

I served our meals with roasted broccoli with green onion, gojuchang, and black sesame seeds.

dsc09235

{dessert}

Cake batter Cookie DŌ.  Ready-to-eat dough with white chocolate chips and sprinkles.

dsc09238

{I love New York}

dsc09210

Chocolate Strawberry And Banana Date

A short post for a short week; here were my top five tastes…

Snack-pack lunch at work.  Crispy broccoli, jerky(1), baby carrots, and a Cara Cara Orange.

dsc09189

I am a sucker for limited edition Oreos(2).  I always eat them by splitting two in half to make one double-stuffed cookie.

dsc09190

Homemade dinner, chicken with bbq sauce, roasted asparagus, and another killer potato(3) recipe from Serious Eats.

dsc09201

Dinner out with a friend, I finally made it to Taïm  and I loved it.  We had sandwiches(4) and smoothies(5).

img_20170118_175813_922

  1. Smoked Salmon Maple Stick from EPIC
  2. chocolate-covered strawberry limited edition Oreos
  3. cheesy onion, bacon, and potato gratin
  4. pita with balaganoush, tahini, Moroccan carrots, and pickled cabbage
  5. date, lime, banana, and soy milk

Long Weekend Top Five

I had a very enjoyable weekend, including two fancy brunches and one entire day spent watching tv and eating nachos with a dog lounging in my lap.  There have been some very enjoyable eats over the past four days too.

dsc09116

dsc09136

dsc09109

Here were the top five…

{1}  The final serving of my new favorite coffee combo.

Texas pecan cold brew + sweet buttercream creamer + ice + a straw = a very happy Emily.  Adam loved it too.

dsc09114

{2}  Brunch at Gristmill in Park Slope.

We adored it and will definitely be back for dinner.  They are known for their garlic knots and that morning they had an everything garlic knot for The Loxness Knotster – with pastrami smoked salmon from ACME, cream cheese, ricotta,  and dill.

dsc09123

I  got a Brunch Punch – with rum, lemon-lime shrub, grenadine, cinnamon, and clove.  It was so pink!

dsc09127

Plus spicy potato hash with carrots, arugula, and poached egg.  This dish was soooo balanced and just a joy to eat.

dsc09132

{3}  Brunch at Sunday in Brooklyn in Williamsburg.

I had an egg sandwich on brioche with gochujang aioli, crispy potatoes, and cheddar.  Plus a toasted oak soda with a shot of vodka.  <– such a genius idea that the owner came by and nodded his approval.

img_20170116_133453_403

{4}  Super soup.

Served with ridiculously cheesy buttered toast.

dsc09151

dsc09142

Yellow onion, celery, green bell pepper, and carrot sautéed in evoo / white miso / low-sodium chicken broth / shredded turkey breast / pesto tortellini.  The soup was super easy since I already had the cooked meat in my freezer.  I boiled the pasta in my broth and it came out great.

dsc09147

{5} Okonomiyaki aka Japanese cabbage pancake.

Thank you, Serious Eats, for introducing me to another new yummy thing.

dsc09157

Served with quick salads of celery, red bell pepper, basil, and green onion, in a mustard vinaigrette.

dsc09172

My pans stick so my okonomiyaki came out in pieces, but you could hardly tell once I smothered it in toppings!  Cabbage and Japanese sweet potato pancake / fish sauce aioli / gochujang / roasted seaweed / black sesame seeds / green onion.

dsc09180

Next week is going to be less exotic but more cheesy, I’m making a gratin!

Mid-January

Tuesday night, I met up with my aunt in the Financial District for dinner and then coffees/cookies at the beautiful new 3rd story Eataly.

Wednesday, I was off from work and spent the entire day in bed, watching tv, eating pizza, and reading a Liane Moriarty book from start to finish.

Thursday, Adam and I went on a dinner date sans coats in 66 degree weather.

<– kind of a hard week to complain about, huh?

Here were my best bites…

New all-time favorite coffee combo: Texas pecan coffee concentrate with sweet buttercream creamer.  Swoontastic.

dsc09049

I also tried the new Starbucks Cascara latte.  It was meh, too sweet but not in a brown sugar way as promised.

dsc09056

Chilaquiles!

dsc09083

Kinda, sorta.  I cooked thick tortilla chips in salsa and leftover spicy pepper sauce from my shakshuka.  Topped with black beans, shredded cheese, and fried eggs.

dsc09086

Piñata apple with a spicy chicken epic bar.  I’ve really been enjoying these meat-based bar options.

dsc09060

Yogurt bowl lunch.  Siggi’s with granola and chocolate tahini.  Plus pears.

dsc09091

I made cheesy turkey sloppy joes.  Turkey breast sautéed with onion and green bell pepper and tomato paste, stirred into a sharp cheddar mornay sauce, and served on a brioche bun.  It was pretty damn good.

dsc09075

With leftover bok choy salad and roasted broccoli.

dsc09072

Our date night was a pizza date at Paulie Gee’s.

dsc09097

It was our first time and we loved it.  I had a Milk and Honey Ale and a pizza with fresh mozzarella, baby spinach, olive oil, and garlic.

dsc09106

Dessert at Ample Hills.  A new flavor, The View – chocolate marshmallow ice cream with ooey gooey butter cake pieces, brownies, and crack cookie; plus fantasmic dark hot chocolate.

dsc09094

Looking forward a long weekend!

Carbo-Loading For The Work-Week

Three words to sum up this weekend’s eats – all the carbs.  Fourth word – yum!

dsc09018

It was a very good weekend, in spite of the city’s first snow.  We drove (carefully!) into Brooklyn both days for tasty brunches, I cooked two new dishes, we cackled loudly at the Garfunkel and Oates special, and I polished off a bunch of freelance work.

Iced latte from Milk Bar.

dsc09020

Starbucks smoked butterscotch latte.  I ordered this with four shots of espresso (normal x2) and two pumps of syrup (normal/2) and it was still too sweet.

dsc08966

Espresso and chocolate milk.

dsc09015

Best brunch of the new year at Sunday in Brooklyn.

dsc08989

I drank a Sundae Coffee – cold brewed coffee, aged rum, allspice dram, and vanilla cream – and a Smoked Oak Soda, aka the best thing I’ve ever tasted.  It was like a glass of toasted marshmallow!!!

dsc08994

We started with a pecan sticky bun and a maple cheddar biscuit.  It’s possible we got excited and basically ordered the whole damn menu.

dsc08992

I uncharacteristically ordered pancakes… malted pancakes with hazelnut maple praline and brown butter.

dsc08997

Plus we spit home fries and I stole several bites of Adam’s smoked salmon and pastrami cod.  We took some food home, obviously, and the dog was over the moon for that salmon.  <– I agree, best lox I’ve had yet.

dsc09000

Work lunch yogurt bowl.  Vanilla bean with TJ’s almond butter granola and chocolate tahini, plus a Piñata apple.

dsc08963

Pizza lunch at Emmy Squared.  We had waffle fries with bonito flakes.

dsc09024

The Marn Blanc — white pizza with mozzarella, ricotta, pecorino, and caramelized onion – was good but intense; I’d probably get something with red sauce to cut through the fat next time.

dsc09028

Snack time, tortilla chips and peanut butter cups.

dsc09031

Dulce de leche iced chocolate from Cacao Market.

dsc09004

Turkey salad for a simple dinner, with mayo, ground mustard, celery, sweet and spicy pecans, and cilantro.  Plus baby carrots and buttered sourdough toast.

dsc08975

Nacho night.  Tortilla chips with sharp cheddar, chunky salsa, and black beans.  Plus more baby carrots on the side.

dsc09005

Sunday I spent some time chopping in the kitchen and tried two new recipes.  I did a very loose interpretation of Mapo Tofu with ground turkey and gojuchang served on brown rice.

dsc09047

Next to a bok choy salad.  I borrowed this sauce, and tossed it with chopped bok choy, red bell pepper, celery, green onions, and Valencia peanuts.  It was delicious!  This was our first time eating the bok choy raw and we loved it.

dsc09041

I’d say my glycogen stores are fully replenished.  Have a fantastic week!
