Independence Day Eats

I hope all of my American readers enjoyed their 4th of July.  I had a three day weekend with Adam and a holiday with theme colors so you know I was happy!

DSC05319

DSC05351

Here were the on theme (summer!) eats…

Is iced coffee a summer food?  I guess not really for me because I drink it 365 days of the year sun or snow.

DSC05323

Red, white, and blue smoothie.  Strawberry / banana yogurt / blueberry.

DSC05349

Watermelon lunch.  Chobani, fresh melon, and seltzer.

DSC05305

Boozy root beer float.  Root beer beer, dark rum, dulce de leche, and vanilla bean gelato.

DSC05330

Cook out dinner that we totally made in-doors.  Turkey hot dogs, oven-roasted corn on the cob, and Eat Live Run’s bbq kale and beans.

DSC05334

I added ketchup for dipping, seltzer for sipping, and a strawberry beer to the meal after we sat down.

DSC05339

DSC05343

See also – Genesee Cream Ale and a giant platter of nachos at a dive bar in Brooklyn.

DSC05360

Trader Joe’s shooting star cookies.

DSC05310

DSC05313

Pop rocks have kind of been our favorite this year.

I’m off to enjoy a four-day work week!

Weekly Wrap-Up

Loves of Late

Family time: My parents were taking a quick vacation in Philadelphia this week and I took a mini road trip and drove up to spend the day with them!  I love the Magic Garden mosaics.

DSC05235

DSC05237

TV: Rizzoli and Isles is on it’s final season and we have been loving it.  It is the most unrealistic of the cop shows that I enjoy but it’s also very funny and heartwarming.  All seasons are streaming on Hulu and I highly recommend going back to the beginning and giving it a watch.  Also, the first three episodes of Documentary Now.  Adam and I thought the 1st season went quickly downhill but the very first episodes are comedy gold.

Coffee: the beans we bought at Birch are fantastic, even when brewed in our crappy coffee pot at home.

DSC05200

DSC05270

Every time I go to Reading Terminal I hit Old City Coffee.

DSC05239

Also in Philly, I finally tried La Columbe.

DSC05251

Stuff: My new planner!  I love new planners in general because I’m a dork but this one has shiny cut outs on the front. (from Blue Sky, fyi, but I couldn’t find it listed on the website)

DSC05273

I also just bought a shirt with cut outs on it, apparently that’s my summer trend.

DSC05280

The day I visited my parents we walked around the city all day and it was just so darn hot that we ended up buying me a new outfit so I could take the world’s most refreshing shower before dinner.

Eats

Coffee, duh!  More cups than were shown above, obviously.

Terrible picture of the yummy pecan pastries a coworker brought it.  She cut back on sugar which can leave baked goods overly tough but these ended up tasting like a pastry-scone hybrid.

DSC05210

Yogurt bowl – plain Greek with chopped red plum, granola, chia, and sprinkles.

DSC05195

Oatmeal bowl – with dark chocolate cacao nibs, chia, and coconut butter.  Plus an apple on the side.

DSC05262

Chia pudding.  The fizzy coconut water was horrible, btw.

DSC05294

When in Philly, (chicken) cheesesteak.

DSC05248

Pocky stick snack.

DSC05282

Turkey cheese roll ups.

DSC05289

Dinner at Devon Seafood with my parents.

DSC05255

I had the bouillabaisse.

DSC05260

Chipotle night, midweek road trips tire you out.  My burrito was stuffed with chicken, pinto beans, peppers, cheese, sour cream, corn salsa, and lettuce.

DSC05300

Best for last, the one thing I actually cooked myself!

DSC05220

White quinoa / red lentils with lemon, tomato paste, and ginger / roasted zucchini and garlic sautéed mushrooms.

DSC05226

Have a great weekend!

Similar To Cake By The Ocean

DSC04911

I’m mashing last weekend’s post into this week’s – and we’ve done a lot of good eating! – so I had to filter down to only the most delicious things.  Here are the best bites from the top five categories…

{1} all the coffee!

DSC04951

We ordered The Unicorn at Box Kite, obviously.

DSC04954

20160617_132026

We went to Birch Coffee and loved it so much that we went back at the end of the day to buy a bag of beans.

DSC04908

Then went back again a few days later for another latte!

DSC05035

Locally roasted coffee that comes in cups with trees on them is just too exciting.  And there were birch trees etched into the sidewalk out front!

DSC04940

{2} protein-packed salads

Beans, eggs, and lots of fish.  At Whole Foods – spring mix with tangerine vinaigrette / salmon / two kinds of bean salads / parmesan / and a hard-boiled egg.

DSC04962

At the cafeteria – romaine with blue cheese / veggies / corn / kidney beans / cheddar / egg.  Plus my coworker brought me a giant piece of baked salmon and I tossed that on top too.

DSC05002

At the cafeteria when I worked last Sunday and pickings were getting slim – I did the best I could with fried fish and a steamed vegetable mix.

DSC05019

It wasn’t bad, but I did buy a train snack that night.

DSC04938

{3} killer sandwiches

Breakfast: egg and cheese on a croissant with turkey bacon.

DSC05026

Lunch: do taquitos count as sandwiches?  I’m including them either way, because this lunch was too good not to share.  Tortaria knocked our socks off.  Adam and I split a platter with mahi and cauliflower (and pork for him).  Plus spicy fries and tons of guacamole.  And a tamarind agua fresca.

DSC05045

The sauces sitting on the tables – green salsa, blended salsa, and something creamy and smoky – were astonishingly good.  And that ridiculous quantity of food (why include chips and fries in the same deal?!) cost less than twenty dollars.

DSC05051

Dinner: cod bahn mi at a new Vietnamese/taco spot in Park Slope.

DSC05033

Don’t question it, the combo worked, I went with a girlfriend who got tacos and we were both very pleased.

DSC04944

{4} sweet stuff

Cake by the ocean.  Cookies by the Hudson.  We got giant chocolate chip walnut cookies from Levain and enjoyed them in Riverside Park.

DSC04931

DSC04924

DSC04927

DSC04934

Tropical smoothie at home.  Frozen mango and soursop with guava paste and vanilla almond milk.

DSC05013

Ben & Jerry’s Empower-Mint flavor is yummy and it supports an important cause.

DSC04990

Siggi’s yogurt with berries and shredded halvah.

DSC05024

Birthday cake croissant from Union Fare.  It’s topped with ground sprinkle dust and filled with sprinkle-studded pastry cream!

DSC05040

IMG_20160622_131053

It was also just one of the best croissant we’ve ever tasted.

DSC04910

{5} hearty homemade dinners

Spanish flavors reigned supreme on the home front this week.  Tomato garlic crock pot chicken served with brown rice tossed with garlic, tomato paste, raisins, and chopped olives.  Plus roasted broccoli.

DSC05067

I also made fantastic enchiladas.

DSC05005

Whole Foods’ roasted garlic green chile enchilada sauce costs a ridiculous $4+ per can and it is soooo good.  Our filling was ground turkey breast cooked with TJ’s vegan chorizo and tons of roasted yellow squash and zucchini.  Plus cheese galore.

DSC05053

Wrap Up, Guava Cheese Week

Important things first, check out this fantastic photo I snapped of the dog:

webster

He is my favorite!

This week’s meals were themed around one of my culinary favorites – guava and cheese.  We put this carton of guava paste to very good use.

DSC04843

There’s some leftover and we have big plans for tropical smoothies.

I didn’t do the best job of taking photos this week – there’s at least one day missing from each meal category – but I did capture the really yummy stuff…

I didn’t make coffee at home so I had to get my fix from Starbucks and the coffee shop at work.  We had a freebie ready on our registered Starbucks card so I got to go a little crazy.

DSC04886

Have you registered your Starbucks card yet?  Do it!  Even if you only stop in occasionally the rewards and perks add up quickly.

With an eggtastic sandwich.

DSC04861

With cheddar and turkey bacon on toasted whole-wheat.

And a really fantastic Larabar.

DSC04816

Hazelnut, hemp, and crunchy bits of cacao

This kombucha and seltzer were both on top of their game.

DSC04810

Sadly the mango coconut chia pudding from Trader Joe’s was not to my taste at all.  I threw it out two bites in and headed to the cafeteria instead.

Oatmeal day.  Chia, cashews, freeze-dried berries, and cookie butter on top.

DSC04836

Plus a sweet and juicy Smitten apple.

I even brought guava for lunch one day.

DSC04882

With white nectarine, granola, and the last of some plain Greek yogurt.

It was a very snacky week but the only thing I managed a picture of were these mini pb cups.

DSC04866

I recommend them highly.

Guava cheese week win – quesadillas!

DSC04847

We spread flour tortillas with guava pasta, smothered them in low-fat shredded mozzarella, and pan cooked them with a bit of evoo.

DSC04858

Plus roasted green beans.

DSC04852

These were basically the un-fried version of the empanada I’m obsessed with from the truck in downtown Brooklyn.

We also made pizza.

DSC04875

On TJ’s frozen thin crust (our favorite) with turkey summer sausage on top.  Amazing.

Yesterday we happily skipped guava and cheese in favor of a date night dinner at Pig & Khao.  This Burmese eggplant salad was one of the best dishes we’ve ever put in our faces.

DSC04887

Grilled eggplant, peanuts, dried shrimp, and mint, scooped with shrimp chips.  Umami.  Neither of us could stop raving about it.

My Khao Soi wasn’t bad either.  Red curry, coconut milk, chicken, egg noodles, pickled mustard greens, and red onions.

DSC04893

Slurping long noodles meant I ended up head to toe covered in red curry but it was worth it.

I cooled down my mouth with the Ginpo.

DSC04892

Gin, grapefruit, cinnamon, and prosecco.

While we were in the neighborhood, we finally checked out the Magnum store.  It’s the famous ice cream bars hand-dipped in chocolate and sprinkled and drizzled with your 3 choices from the toppings bar.

IMG_20160616_181046

We got vanilla / dipped in milk chocolate / topped with gold flake, rose petals, and espresso sugar / drizzled with dark chocolate.  It was good, the shell was wonderfully thick, but I was definitely glad Adam was there to share with me.

Destination City

Untitled

this week I loved…

Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm.  It took me forever to find a balm with both tint and spf but this one fits the bill perfectly!

A blog book review.  Dawn Lerman’s My Fat Dad was sent to me free of charge to try/read for the blog.  Her chapter on moving to New York City walked the reader through the different cultural food neighborhoods in a way that made my mouth water.

Living in a destination city.  I had two different sets of friends visiting NYC for work trips this week.  It was fantastic to get to catch up with them!  However, I went out after work for dinner and/or drinks multiple times and I am flipping exhausted.

DSC04736

P.S.  My favorite bar (Pork Slope in Park Slope) now has $1 jello shots, clearly I backed the right horse!

this week I ate…

Vietnamese-ish iced coffee.

DSC04715

DSC04729

DSC04759

A killer smoothie – with banana, blueberry, and avocado.  So creamy.

DSC04755

Poppy seed bagel with olive cream cheese.

DSC04804

Oatmeal bowl.  With cookie butter and a pixie tangerine.

DSC04705

Greek yogurt bowl with Cheerios and plums.  I also crumbled a brownie in there (see below) and it was pretty fantastic.

DSC04781

Taboule salad from the cafeteria.

DSC04732

Whole Foods hot bar.  Lots of veggies, rice with black beans and cheddar, and broccoli mac and cheese.

DSC04764

I needed a 2nd coffee snack more than once.

DSC04720

Turkey jerky.

DSC04768

Best ever brownies.  Just this recipe without the fluff.

DSC04797

Baby carrots with great feta dip.

DSC04777

I had Thai food in Williamsburg with Adam and a girlfriend.  Drunken noodles with mock duck that were as spicy as they were delicious.

DSC04741

We cooled our mouths down with soft-serve from Milk Bar.  Fruity pebble soft-serve(!!) with fudge sauce and sprinkles.

DSC04747

Indian at the Grand Central food court.  And yes, I realize that is a lame spot to take an out-of-towner.

DSC04809

Starbucks sandwich for a quick dinner on the train and then I went straight to bed!

DSC04723

I did make dinner at home one night!  Whole-wheat vermicelli noodles with ginger and garlic chicken, shredded cabbage, bell pepper, and a tahini lime sauce.  With cashews on top plus tons of Sriracha after the picture.

DSC04788

We snacked on a servings’ worth of cashews and sliced bell pepper while we cooked.

Good friends, good eats, it was a good week!

It’s Time For BBQ And Hot Dogs

Here were this week’s top three…

{breakfast}

Killer breakfast sandwich.  Turkey bacon, egg, and cheddar on a croissant.  If I could get the cafeteria to scramble me an egg with peppers to put on a sandwich I’d be in heaven.

DSC04575

Coffee always makes the top of the list!  Black Hand with chocolate milk.

DSC04553

With a Lavender Love kombucha.

DSC04592

{lunch}

Yogurt bowls for the win.  With blueberries and chopped nectarine and modest variation in toppings.  2% Fage with Nature’s Path Heritage Flakes.

DSC04530

4% Siggis with pecans, chia, and cookie butter.

DSC04610

Passionfruit Chobani with Heritage Flakes, pecans, and chia.

DSC04559

{snack}

This kettle corn is some of the best packaged popcorn I’ve ever tasted, it is super crispy.

DSC04549

Another sweet and salty, a pixie tangerine with a chicken Wilde Bar.

DSC04603

My coworker brought me in a grass jelly drink to try after I raved about the jelly at Boba Guys.  It was good!  Not very sweet at all and mildly grassy in a pleasant way.  I mixed it with vanilla soy milk.

DSC04548

{dinner}

Our cooking took place indoors and up North but we still made the most of Southern bbq flavors for two of our meals this week.  Nacho night!  Carolina bbq chips, sharp cheddar, pulled turkey with bbq sauce, pinto beans, red onion, and roasted broccoli.

DSC04591

A similar concept on salad – arugula with ranch / bbq turkey / pinto beans / red onion / cucumber / bell pepper.  With corn on the cob.  This was a fun dinner but it desperately needed some crunch and we ended up dumping kettle chips on our salads to act as de facto croutons.

DSC04625

Hot dogs in scrambled eggs sounds low-brow but tastes amazing.  Our eggs included ‘dogs, red onion, arugula, and cheddar.  With avocado and roasted asparagus on the side.

DSC04640

Now I just need to find myself some watermelon this weekend!

Five For Ten

DSC04436

I worked all last weekend so I didn’t take the time to blog.  Good news – that means I have tomorrow off with a three day weekend!  Here were the top five eats for the last ten days…

{1} Oatmeal for lunch

Prepackaged with vanilla almond butter and citrus on the side.

DSC04312

And a homemade mix with chia seeds and sliced almonds.

DSC04300

With fresh strawberries stirred in and melty cookie butter on top.  P.S. Cookie butter probably should have gotten its own bullet point!

{2} The last of the Tahini Granola in yogurt bowls

With plain Greek yogurt and fresh blueberries and blackberries.

DSC04413

DSC04424

DSC04383

I need to make a 2nd batch of granola asap, it made the last two weeks of lunches an absolute delight.  I’m going to give myself a lower sugar week with Heritage Flakes first though.

{3} Epic sandwiches

The cafeteria-assembled breakfast sandwiches were particularly epic but this turkey ‘which from home was nothing to sneeze at.

DSC04338

DSC04331

TJ’s quinoa bread with turkey and cheddar.  I put the chips inside the sandwich for some needed crunch.

DSC04341

Cinnamon-raisin toast with smashed hard-boiled egg, veggie sausage, and Greek yogurt cream cheese.

DSC04396

Egg and cheese croissantwich.

DSC04442

I’ve decided I don’t eat egg sandwiches often enough, a gap in my culinary habits that desperately needs to be filled.

{4} Starbucks’ s’mores bar

Holy crap this was good!

DSC04409

I swear the graham cracker layer has coffee in it.

{5} Mexican-flavors dinners

Deconstructed tacos, aka taco filling bowls scooped with tortilla chips.

DSC04317

Shredded chicken, sautéed orange bell peppers and onion, cheese, plain Greek yogurt, and fresh cilantro.  Plus brussels sprouts that I roasted with taco seasoning. <– so good

DSC04323

Another night we made chicken and zucchini enchiladas.

DSC04419

DSC04431

I don’t know why I never make enchiladas, these were so easy!

{Bonus} Near misses – don’t try this at home

These two seemed like they’d be great and instead were total let downs.  I did not want a 2nd bite of this cookie dough bar.

DSC04401

And we were expecting to love Bunsmith, they have a cookie butter bun for god sake.  And a boozy banana milk and spice cocktail.

DSC04357

DSC04366

DSC04374

Mega meh.  The veggies in our bowls came out of a can and there was entirely too much rice.  We’ll have to stay loyal to Bao Haus.  In fact, it’s on the agenda for the three-day weekend!

Back At It

We are back at the old grind.  The first week of real life after vacation felt loooooong.  It’s good to be back at work though, and great to be back with the dog!

Here were some of the best bites this week…

This week’s coffee was fan-freaking-tastic!  Blackhand that I brought home from my trip to Richmond.  It was super strong and roasty.

DSC03953

With strawberry watermelon Polar that’s my new favorite flavor.

DSC04013

I also tried the caramel almond Nutchello.  It was pleasant but not as strongly flavored as I was hoping for.

DSC03947

Midmorning snack of baby carrots and wonderful red cherries.

DSC03959

Cafeteria lunch.  They are making a fancy new hybrid burger that is half turkey half veggie; it was good!  My korma veggies were not so good, I ended up swapping them for fries.

DSC03979

Yogurt bowl.  Salted caramel noosa (<– yum!) with blueberries and blackberries and awesome gorp-style trail mix my aunt gave us.  Plus a golden nugget mandarin orange on the side.

DSC03996

Better yogurt bowl.  Plain Greek yogurt, berries, red plum, Nature’s Path Heritage Flakes, nature’s sprinkles (chia) for healthy fat, and Amy Sedaris’ sprinkles for joy.

DSC04023

This ridiculously adorable cookie from Starbucks made for a fun end of the day snack.

DSC04047

And carrots with caramelized onion dip was the perfect thing to crunch through while I cooked this week.

DSC03981

We also really enjoyed lemonade with pink lemon!  Perfect with mint sparkling water.  The lemons were orange on the outside, pinkish on the inside, and sweeter than their yellow counterparts.

DSC04027

Brinner for the win.  Banana pecan pancakes, berries, and amazing turkey bacon, with maple syrup poured on after the picture.

DSC04003

Breakfast for dinner is always a good idea, but it’s a great idea when your drink and dessert are also on theme.  We planned the pancakes because we both had coffee-flavored beers to try.

DSC03984

And we tried the crazy expensive, crazy good Compartes donuts & coffee bar.  I thought it was totally worth the price.

DSC04007

Our other dinners were also winners.  Nachos!  Maple bacon kettle chips with TJ’s low-fat three cheese blend, turkey bacon, shredded turkey breast, broccoli, and green pepper.

DSC03966

And Greek salad night.  Greens with Greek feta dressing, cucumber, tabouli, TJ’s stuffed grape leaves, and crunchy roasted chickpeas.

DSC04035

Last night we ate Chipotle and caught up on TV. <– kind of the best date night
