Heart On My Apron

It’s hard to believe that the Valentine’s celebration of love fell on a week when America really needs some extra love <– but more importantly needs better gun control legislation.

– – There is no good segue from my opening thoughts to blathering about my lunches so I’m just going to abruptly start talking about food here. – –

Highlights from this week…

Chocolate covered strawberry smoothie – plain Greek yogurt, frozen strawberries, and chocolate milk.

IMG_7105

Chocolate covered cherry iced coffee – espresso roast with chocolate milk and Luxardo cherry juice.

IMG_7167

There is a snazzy new Hungry Ghost location near my work and their fantastic iced lattes have not been a good thing for my coffee budget.

IMG_7154

Seriously though, the best coffee of my life was Sunday while grocery shopping – the frozen moolattas from Stew Leonard’s are unreasonably delicious.

IMG_7091

Birthday cake flavored protein bar.

IMG_7095

Sumo mandarin // conversation hearts // sweetened dried lemon and dried persimmon.

IMG_7126

Lavender yogurt with blueberries // dark chocolate heart.

IMG_7178

Vanilla bean yogurt with blueberries and a jaffa murcot mandarin.

IMG_7130

Coffee and chicory yogurt with blueberries // cinnamon churro crispy treat.

IMG_7183

Pinch of Yum’s bourbon chicken.  I used breasts instead of thighs, roasted shredded cabbage instead of rice, and upgraded to maple bourbon.

IMG_7165

Cheesy baked crab dip – with shredded crab, cream cheese, cheddar, green onion, Old Bay, minced ginger, and fish sauce.

IMG_7085

Scooped with orange bell pepper slices and Trader Joe’s coconut shrimp.

IMG_7079

Spiralized zucchini sauteed with lemon and pepper topped with  extra-firm tofu crusted in peanut sauce (peanut butter, soy sauce, rice vinegar, lime juice, fish sauce, canola oil, sugar, garlic, and ginger).

IMG_7136

I hope everyone has a fun, safe, love-filled weekend.

Emily Of Sandwich

This was a short week for me on the work front, I was off Monday from the weekend (with Adam!!) and off Thursday for a doctor’s appointment.  Wear your sunblock, kids – I have to have two moles surgically removed, one on my chest and one on my back, complete with stitches, giant gross scars, and a month straight of no gym and no normal showers.  At least I got a good lunch in Manhattan out of the deal?

Highlights…

We finally made it to Doughnut Project!  The Malter White was great, malted milk chocolate with a malted chocolate chip mini cookie and cookie crumble.

IMG_6972

We got a gift certificate to the Russian Tea Room for Christmas this year and we enjoyed a super fancy lunch.  We had vodka, of course.

IMG_6981

And caviar.

IMG_6987

And I had delicious Kulebiaka for my entree –  salmon with slow cooked onions, mushrooms, and vegetables wrapped in pastry, served with braised caraway cabbage and mustard beurre blanc.

IMG_6990

Yogurt bowl wins.  Greek with fresh strawberries and caramel almond butter.

IMG_7003

Strawberry Icelandic style with a fancy tangerine.

IMG_7009

Chicken quesadilla from La Esquina.

IMG_7047

Best ever ice cream from Ice & Vice.  Malted vanilla with sea salt caramel.

IMG_7049

Dessert at Vanilla Bean.  Banoffee tart for me and a crazy good iced latte.

IMG_6996

Caramelized banana peanut butter cups.

IMG_7018

It was sandwich week for dinners!  Croque Madame – rye bread, smoked turkey, sharp cheddar, strawberry jam, french toasted – with roasted broccoli and shishitos.

IMG_7027

Jalopeño popper turkey burgers with smoked gouda and roasted green beans.  We didn’t have buns but I’m still counting this as a sandwich.

IMG_7017

Asian-style turkey reubens – with gojuchang mayo and kimchi – with roasted shredded brussel sprouts.

IMG_7057

Cookie Monster

Friday, Friday, Friday!  How did a short week feel so long?  At least I had multiple sugar highs to carry me through.

Munk Pack sent me a sweet (but actually protein-packed) box of samples.  Munk Pack Protein Cookies contain a whopping 18 grams of plant-protein and 6 grams of fiber per cookie.  They are gluten-free, vegan, and do not contain sugar alcohols or soy.

IMG_6203

I let Adam review two flavors on his own because he’s the one whose lifestyle depends on quick, protein-packed snacks (and he’s already obsessed with Munk Pack’s oatmeal packets).  He thought double dark chocolate was good but not great and was over the moon for oatmeal raisin spice.  To quote – “5/5.  A little bit savory but not too spicy.  Firm on the outside but moist on the inside, with a good texture from the oats.  Very filling, it kept me satisfied for hours.”

IMG_6220

And personally I liked peanut butter chocolate chip but I loooooved the coconut white chip macadamia.  All of the flavors were very substantial, I actually ended up skipping lunch yesterday because I was still so satisfied from the cookie I ate for breakfast at 9!

IMG_6317

Peanut butter wasn’t necessarily a cookie-cookie but was a darn good protein bar but the coconut flavor was straight-up decadent.  It had the slightly gritty consistency of cookie dough and was one of the more delicious packaged cookies (dessert options included) I’ve ever eaten.

IMG_6533

Plus we threw a baby shower for a coworker this week and I made and ate a million desserts.  Matzoh toffee candy.

IMG_6495

Triple fudge brownies with maraschino cherries and cherry cream cheese frosting.

IMG_6520

I did eat one or two things that weren’t sweet.  Like super spicy Thai food.  I went out for lunch with a girlfriend in Astoria and had a great bowl of extra spicy pad see ew with mock duck.

IMG_6455

Plus Adam and I hung out for a bit at Gossip; love it there.

IMG_6451

Still obsessed with this Trader Joe’s seed and bean snack.

IMG_6527

It was a week of fantastic home-cooked dinners.  Like Asian-style cabbage wraps.  <– best dish of the week

IMG_6462

Red cabbage cups / ground turkey sauteed with shredded carrot, spring onion, orange and bell pepper/ crushed peanuts on top.

IMG_6473

Plus two dipping sauces – miso, lime juice, sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar, gojuchang / avocado, cilantro, fish sauce, rice vinegar, lime juice, Greek yogurt, evoo.

IMG_6480

Another night I used the leftover avocado cilantro sauce to make a killer salad.  With red cabbage, arugula, spring onion, shredded carrot, yellow bell pepper, black beans, sharp cheddar, and salty peanuts.

IMG_6552

With an assortment of global gummy candies for dessert.

IMG_6534

And another night we made loaded cheeseburger cheese fries!

IMG_6501

Waffle fries / cheese / tons of sauteed onion / mini turkey cheeseburgers / with ketchup and mayo on top.

IMG_6512

Plus broccoli slaw on the side, sauteed with rice vinegar and cream cheese.

IMG_6510

Have a happy weekend!

Winter Weekend Wonderland

Three fun facts…

{1} NYC got its first snow this weekend.

IMG_5510

webster

{2} Adam and I used the blustery weather as reason to spend an afternoon at the Metropolitan Museum.  So much Van Gogh!

IMG_5501

IMG_5506

{3} We also watched and loved the first season of Stan Against Evil.

{bonus fact} It’s Adam’s birthday today!  I was going to write a gooey, disgusting, you’re-my-everything post but our ten year anniversary is on December 28th so I’ll save up my feels.

Weekend eats highlights…

Eggnog ice cream spiked iced coffee.

IMG_5462

Jalapeño cheddar potato pierogis at Baba’s with caramelized onions and mushrooms.

IMG_5528

BBQ spread at Fletchers.  I had smoked chicken, cole slaw, pickles, and rivers of bbq sauce.

IMG_5533

Egg ‘n grog pie at Four & Twenty Blackbirds.  It was a delicious, boozy custard.

IMG_5534

Edible brownie batter!  For 2, mix 1 Tbsp melted butter / 1 Tbsp granulated sugar / 2 Tbsp brown sugar / 1 Tbsp cocoa powder / 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour / 1.5 Tbsp milk of choice (I recommend eggnog).

IMG_5497

I made stroganoff-ish turkey bowls.  Ground meat sautéed with shallots, paprika, sour cream, and tons of fried mushrooms.

IMG_5490

With carrots and hummus for additional veggies.

IMG_5470

And Holiday Cheers Health-Ade Kombucha for fun.  <– I was expecting to hate the ginger but this ended up being my all-time favorite kombucha, it was all sweet and no spice

IMG_5475

Chicken tenders and slaw.

IMG_5514

Oven-fried chicken tenders (using a rough version of this method) coated in crushed Heritage Flakes and drizzled with homemade honey mustard.

IMG_5521

With homemade cole slaw on the side.  I adore slaw and this quick version was better than any I’ve had in a restaurant.  I didn’t make notes for a recipe but it’s sliced cabbage and golden raisins in a mix of mayo, sour cream, mustard, sugar, and rice vinegar.

IMG_5525

Fantastic cheese plates.  Fancy TJ’s crackers with white stilton with apricots, honey goat cheese, and raw milk cheddar.

IMG_5568

Southern Tier Cinnamon Roll Ale that tasted like a cookie.

IMG_5542

Plus carrots and orange bell pepper with hummus.

IMG_5556

And sugared nuts and dried figs.

IMG_5547

It’s Beginning To Taste A Lot Like Thanksgiving

Adam and I both worked Friday, Saturday, Sunday so I don’t have a lot to share.  THREE  exciting things: this weekend I…

{1} Made an on-theme Thanksgiving time dinner and ate it with the last pumpkin beer of the season.

IMG_4948

Chicken cooked in the crockpot with Korean bbq sauce and fresh cranberries / on a bed of roasted shredded brussel sprouts and cabbage.  Plus I went back and added melted extra-sharp cheddar on top, which was perfect.

IMG_4957

{2} Discovered the best ice cream flavor ever.

IMG_4958

{3} Dyed my hair purple!

IMG_4937

IMG_4916

A Week Of Splendid Sandwiches

Can I really use that title in a week without a single grilled cheese or lobster roll?  I did have some exceptionally above-bar poultry-based sandwiches.

The winning ‘wiches…

Milk Bar‘s Thanksgiving croissant is the best sandwich of all time.  Adam and I waited for it with baited breath this year.

IMG_4867

The seasoned croissant is stuffed with turkey, cranberry sauce, and stuffing!

IMG_20171114_160635_733

Flip Bird at the Ashland does a damn fine chicken sandwich – pulled chicken, harissa honey, pickled coleslaw, sambal mayo, and crispy skin.

IMG_20171115_122351_142

And my homemade toasted sandwich dinner was nothing to sneeze at.

IMG_4882

Sourdough / Applegate Farm smoked sliced turkey / 4 year aged cheddar / smoked maple mayo (olive oil based mayo, maple, liquid smoke, smoked paprika).

IMG_4894

With roasted zucchini on the side.

IMG_4889

Other fun stuff…

Vegan eggnogs in my coffee.  Adam really enjoyed the TJ’s almond milk version but I remain loyal to Silk.

IMG_4814

Here’s my current holiday stash, so exciting!

IMG_4822

Amazin’ Raisin sent me some samples to review.  The fruit-flavored raisins contain three ingredients – California raisins, citric acid, and natural fruit flavors – and are packed with flavor but no artificial sugar or sulfur dioxide.  Adam and I have both been really enjoying them.  So far his favorite flavor is pineapple and mine is watermelon.

IMG_4835

Some key work eats included raisins and a Larabar.

IMG_4843

And blackberry Siggi with holiday grapes and a maple maca bar.

IMG_4854

Really, the best dinner of the week was movie theater pretzel bites with fake cheese.  We went to see Thor: Ragnarok and split our sides laughing.  Our AMC has extra-wide seats that fully recline so the whole experience was really nice.

We also went gaga for these scallion pancakes from Trader Joe’s.

IMG_4847

They were crazy flavorful and satisfying.  I topped mine with mayo and Sriracha.

IMG_4861

With baby carrots and potato snacks for an appetizer for crunch.

IMG_4839

A girlfriend and I met for a mid-week dinner at Bricolage and were both big fans.  Sriracha butter wings to start.

IMG_4874

And we both had pink drinks!  She had the pink soda salted lemonade and I picked an option with a cute name that I can’t remember where you pick a spirit and let the bartender go crazy.  I said “vodka, no ginger” and ended up with something delicious with raspberry and lime.

IMG_4873

My caramelized shrimp claypot was 10/10.  Georgia white shrimp, vidalia onions, cherry tomatoes, and chili paste with rice to soak up the sauce.

IMG_4880

Enjoy your weekends!

Pumpkin’s Still In Season

IMG_4647

This post includes three more days of vacation (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday); I eased back into the work-week after my trip.  It’s supposed to be in the 20’s in NYC later today so now I kind of wish I was away on vacation again!

Highlights from the week…

Coffee!

IMG_4634

Pumpkin spice my grandma brought me from Winans.

IMG_4656

Pumpkin smoothie with Greek yogurt, maple syrup, cow’s milk, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

IMG_4630

BBQ at Salt and Bone.

IMG_4574

I got a ridiculous but tasty Percocet with aged rum, coco lopez, citrus.

IMG_4575

And had turkey breast – 3 hour smoked with a butter sauce – cole slaw, and a few bites of Adam’s potato salad.

IMG_4581

Thai food in Sunnyside.  Fried tofu.

IMG_4621

And drunken noodles that actually had enough veggies for my tastes.

IMG_4623

One of our favorite winter traditions is visiting Winter Village at Bryant Park for a thick hot chocolate.

IMG_4641

Gooey walnut chocolate chip cookie from Chip in Astoria.

IMG_4565

Buckeye straight from Ohio.

IMG_4589

We tried something fun from Minamoto Kitchoan – Sakura Gomora, sweet bean and mochi wrapped in a cherry blossom pancake.

IMG_4497

Packed lunch – strawberry and rosehip kefir cup with a cupcake crumbled in!  Plus a snap dragon apple.

IMG_4667

I brought in chocolate cupcakes (from a mix!) with homemade cream cheese frosting and Amy Sedaris sprinkles for a coworker’s birthday.

IMG_4660

Yogurt with pumpkin puree and pumpkin spice Cheerios and Frosted Mini Wheats.

IMG_4701

Roasted fall salad – quinoa / shredded brussel sprouts / leeks / turkey bacon / sweet and spicy pecans / gold raisins / and oven-fried sage.

IMG_4592

One of the co-founders of CHUT UP reached out to my about sampling their new line of condiments and I happily accepted, so those were featured in dinners for the rest of the week.  All three flavors are made with minimal processing and no added sugars (and they’re tasty!).

IMG_4602

I made a veggie-packed version of chana masala with the addition of celery and orange and yellow bell pepper.

IMG_4608

Topped with apple and caramelized onion chutney.

IMG_4618

And a dinner for dipping with blue cheese dressing and beet ketchup.

IMG_4680

Roasted broccoli and a root veggie mix from Trader Joe’s (carrots, beets, parsnips, and sweet potato).

IMG_4686

Baked chicken tenders crusted in panko after an overnight marinate in peri peri hot sauce, minced ginger, lemon, and brown sugar.

IMG_4693

IMG_4566

White Gummi Slushie

I worked the weekend (and had two weekdays off) so my schedule has been a bit out of whack.  It is still basically summer temperatures here so we haven’t moved on to hot chocolate and soups but we have been loving the crap out of Pumpkin Month.  Here were some highlights from the past 7 days…

Weekly coffee combo – Black Hand and chocolate milk.

IMG_4150

This pumpkin spice kefir is super tasty.

IMG_4191

Pumpkin Noosa with a TJ’s pumpkin cereal bar and a SweeTango apple.

IMG_4148

TJ’s pumpkin yogurt with pumpkin spice Cheerios and Frosted Mini Wheats and a Starkrimson pear.

IMG_4158

Key lime skyr with pomegranate and Heritage Flakes.

IMG_4228

Adam and I got a midweek lunch at Sweet to Lick vegan cafe and we are completely in love.  We had a terrific hero with bulgogi style setain, gochujang mayo, and pickled vegetables.

IMG_4198

Plus the best chocolate chip cookies ever sandwiched around Oreo cream filling!

IMG_4203

IMG_4206

Detroit Friends potato chips (expo sample).  These are some of the very best kettle chips we’ve ever tasted and their company is totally fantastic too – some of the potatoes are grown in a vacant lot in Detroit’s Hope District.

IMG_4169

Orange slice candies.  There’s a vitamin commercial where a woman squeezes an orange slice shaped gummy and it made Adam and I both immediately want to run out to the drugstore.

IMG_4164

Campfire S’mores ice cream.

IMG_4224

White gummi slushie from 7-11.  We are obsessed, these are so good.  I’m not sure what the actual flavor is (pineapple?  or maybe white grape?) but they are juicy and delicious.

IMG_4101

All-you-can-eat sushi buffet at Mizumi.  We love it there, everything is super fresh and expertly prepared.  I didn’t snap all of my plates but the highlights included crab cakes, inari, and seaweed salad.

IMG_4221

Roasted squash and tuna quinoa cakes with cocktail sauce.

IMG_4172

Veggie bowls.  Shredded cabbage tossed in this sauce / roasted edamame / marinated hard-boiled eggs (marinated in gochujang, brown sugar, soy sauce, and rice vinegar).

IMG_4218

Mexican food at Oak House in Floral Park.

IMG_4232

I had a Mezcal mojito.

IMG_4236

And veggie fajitas with carrots, onions, squash, peppers, and mushrooms.  They had chipotle Cholula at the table and we doused everything with it.

IMG_4240

Plus Adam and I split vanilla flan and tres leches cake for dessert.

IMG_4242

Have a great week!
