Working Weekend Wrap-Up

No traditional weekend for me, my only day off was Thursday.  I’m actually working straight through this Thursday – 7 days in a row – which means next weekend will be a three-day extravaganza!  It’s hard to complain about 7 days anyway, my last year at Buff State when I was doing school/internship/part-time job there were a few stretches where I went 30 days plus without a true day off.

The past 4 days in numbers –

  • glasses of iced coffee – 7
  • packed lunches – 0
  • product reviews* – 2
  • desserts – 10 billion
  • books read start to finish** – 1

notes: *the products were both sent to me free of charge and neither company gave me additional compensation for this post; **the book was a murder mystery that I actually hated but needed to know the ending to

Here are the highlights…

Key lime cookie from Schmackary’s.

DSC06197

With white chocolate, pistachios, and cream cheese icing.  The middle is the best part.

Three new dark chocolate flavors of Nonni’s Almond THINaddictives* – Dark Chocolate Banana Almond, Dark Chocolate Cherry Almond, and Double Dark Chocolate Almond.  FYI – hit up their Facebook page for a new flavors giveaway.

DSC06150

They are 70-80 calories per pack (2 thins) and crisp but not too crumbly.  I though the double chocolate flavor was a bit plain but the cherry and banana had great notes of tart and sweet.  This week I paired them with my coffee but I’m also looking forward to crumbling them into yogurts.

DSC06210

DSC06233

DSC06202

That combo is killer, Grady’s is thick and sweet and it makes my heart sing.

Traditional breakfast.

DSC06238

Potatoes, scrambled eggs, and (turkey) bacon.  Covered in ketchup because I grew up in St. Thomas and we put ketchup on everything.  <– real talk, I didn’t know that ketchup wasn’t an automatic pairing for chicken wings until I went to college; now I mostly use other condiments but scrambled eggs always get ketchup

The cafeteria is pretty grim over the weekend but Friday I did eat this seafood feast.

DSC06214

Fried shrimp, potato wedges, and vinegar-based cole slaw.  We had leftover ice cream from our birthday party and I taught my coworkers about Australian iced coffees.

DSC06219

They loved it!

Since I didn’t have my yogurt lunches I got my probiotics in the form of Health-Ade Kombucha*.

DSC06160

Their small-batch (2.5 gallons) fizz is organic, vegan, kosher, and gluten-free.  They do their fermenting in glass containers only and the bottles are fantastic and just begging to house a handful of wildflowers.  Health-Ade generously sent me a case of Ginger Lemon.

DSC06177

I have to confess here that I actually kind of hate ginger.  Nonetheless, I found the kombucha to be very enjoyable.  The flavor behind the spice was very “clean” and just sweet enough.  I still wouldn’t buy this flavor once I finish my samples but I will damn sure scoop up Pink Lady Apple or California Grape the minute I spot them.  P.S. I brought a bottle to a ginger loving friend and she said it was hands down the best kombucha she’s ever tasted.

Date night in Hell’s Kitchen.  My NCIS obsession finally paid off for Adam – I took us to Donna Bella Bake Shop because it’s co-owned by Pauley Perrette (aka lab tech Abby).  We had a dreamy lemon bar and this delectable brownie with a cookie crust and ganache on top.

DSC06183

We walked past Room Service and decided to do Thai for dinner.

DSC06187

That guava mojito was terrible and weak.  But the crispy duck salad wasn’t half bad.

DSC06189

I ordered the Pad Noh Mai for dinner, shrimps, minced chicken, fresh basils, Thai chili, and bamboo shoots with herbs chili paste garlic sauce.

DSC06193

The menu promised spice and it delivered.  I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant though, Hell’s Kitchen is a bastion of excellent, authentic Thai restaurants and you can do better.

I cooked!  A real dinner, a stew, made of vegetables no less.  I put the crock pot to work for me, filled to its brim.  Onion / garlic / carrot / kale / red bell pepper / white beans / red lentils / diced tomato / veggie broth.

DSC06224

I didn’t bother to season or brown anything so the end result was a little bland, but topped with melted cheese it was hearty and satisfying.

Three down, four to go.

Birthday Staycation

IMG_20160724_090248

I’m running late posting but my birthday weekend was absolutely worth sharing.  My parents were visiting,  we spent time with one of my oldest childhood friends which feels very appropriate for a birthday, I had four days off of work (and Adam was free a bit too!), and we spent our days walking and eating.

I love when people visit because showing them around lets you take a vacation in your own town.  Alphabetically, some of our stops included – Brookfield Place, Bushwick, Chelsea, Chelsea Piers, Greenwich Village, the Highline, the Mayorville petting zoo, Montauk, the Narrows botanical garden, Park Slope, Smorgasburg, and Williamsburg.

DSC05688

DSC05760

Here were the food highlights…

Terremoto Coffee.

DSC05714

Winter rose latte in a complimentary cup.

Bluestone Lane.

DSC05727

My Australian iced latte – with cocoa powder and ice cream – was deeply enjoyed as the days were hot, hot hot.

Corner of Vermont sells the best maple candies I’ve ever had.

DSC05768

And their maple soft serve is delightful.

Lunch in Montauk.

DSC05701

They are famous for lobster rolls but I went with the seafood chili this visit.

Chickpea & Olive at Smorgasburg.

DSC05775

Pulled BBQ jackfruit with Carolina slaw, bread & butter pickles, fried shallots, and horseradish aioli, on a potato bun.  This was my first time trying jackfruit and I’m definitely a fan.

Chuko Ramen.

DSC05705

My parents both loved their chicken miso ramen.  I topped mine with drippy egg and tons of chili garlic oil.

Montana Trail House.

DSC05740

I had a drink with hibiscus-infused rum!  And another with Aperol and grapefruit.

DSC05746

We shared fried green tomato sliders and switchel glazed carrots.

DSC05744

And I stuck with veggies for my entrée and ordered the broccoli gratin.

DSC05751

Mostly because it came covered in pimento cheese.

Mile End Deli.

DSC05776

We started with the peppers and baba ghanoush.  When you’re at ME you have to order poutine.

DSC05781

And I always order a turkey reuben.

DSC05786

I love New York.

Birthday Week Eats

I turn 31 this Sunday so this week is my birthday week.  My parents timed their summer visit for this weekend so I’m off of work today and Monday and I’m pretty sure the four-day weekend will be the best gift I’ve ever given myself.  I also pulled out this stash of cake flavored stuff I’ve been hoarding all year –

DSC05588

The Airhead wins as my favorite, it has sprinkles in it!

My other eats included…

Coffee.

DSC05599

We’ve had some big changes at work – that squeezed even more work into each day – and on top of them one of my coworkers has been out all week and I’ve been responsible for covering both intensive care units.  <– I have needed so much coffee.

DSC05654

DSC05641

DSC05602

DSC05670

I didn’t have time to pack lunch one day and I cobbled together a pretty great reuben-ish wrap sandwich in the cafeteria – sliced turkey, swiss, cole slaw, pickles, and thousand island.

DSC05657

Yogurt lunches reign supreme.  Plain Siggi’s with blackberries and coconut butter.

DSC05635

Cake yogurt with KIND maple granola and blackberries.

DSC05593

Have you done Chobani’s “Find Your Flavor Soulmate” flow chart?

chobani_flowchart_x2_v09

What combo does your heart sing for?  My answers lead me to sweet and spicy but as much as I love some sweet with my heat spiced yogurt just doesn’t appeal to me.  Sweet with sweet is much more my speed.  Like this Almond Coco Loco Flip that knocked my socks off with how fantastically creamy it was.

DSC05662

Speaking of sweet… I am still completely obsessed with Justin’s peanut butter cups, in all forms.

DSC05606

And I made the David Lebowitz chocolate chip cookies so my parents could try them, not that there are many left!

DSC05673

Best meal of the week – I made a variation on this recipe with turkey bacon, chopped spinach, and fresh mint.  It was still delicious as cold leftovers.

DSC05623

Salad night.  Romaine with ranch / turkey bacon / shrimp / carrots / tomato / fresh mint / swiss.

DSC05646

Paired with chips and dip because I’m fancy.

DSC05645

I picked my parents up from the airport last night.  JFK is a nightmare so we stayed in Long Island afterwards and grabbed dinner at a little diner near their hotel.  I actually got a pretty yummy Greek meal.

Weekly Wrap-Up

Loves of Late

Family time: My parents were taking a quick vacation in Philadelphia this week and I took a mini road trip and drove up to spend the day with them!  I love the Magic Garden mosaics.

DSC05235

DSC05237

TV: Rizzoli and Isles is on it’s final season and we have been loving it.  It is the most unrealistic of the cop shows that I enjoy but it’s also very funny and heartwarming.  All seasons are streaming on Hulu and I highly recommend going back to the beginning and giving it a watch.  Also, the first three episodes of Documentary Now.  Adam and I thought the 1st season went quickly downhill but the very first episodes are comedy gold.

Coffee: the beans we bought at Birch are fantastic, even when brewed in our crappy coffee pot at home.

DSC05200

DSC05270

Every time I go to Reading Terminal I hit Old City Coffee.

DSC05239

Also in Philly, I finally tried La Columbe.

DSC05251

Stuff: My new planner!  I love new planners in general because I’m a dork but this one has shiny cut outs on the front. (from Blue Sky, fyi, but I couldn’t find it listed on the website)

DSC05273

I also just bought a shirt with cut outs on it, apparently that’s my summer trend.

DSC05280

The day I visited my parents we walked around the city all day and it was just so darn hot that we ended up buying me a new outfit so I could take the world’s most refreshing shower before dinner.

Eats

Coffee, duh!  More cups than were shown above, obviously.

Terrible picture of the yummy pecan pastries a coworker brought it.  She cut back on sugar which can leave baked goods overly tough but these ended up tasting like a pastry-scone hybrid.

DSC05210

Yogurt bowl – plain Greek with chopped red plum, granola, chia, and sprinkles.

DSC05195

Oatmeal bowl – with dark chocolate cacao nibs, chia, and coconut butter.  Plus an apple on the side.

DSC05262

Chia pudding.  The fizzy coconut water was horrible, btw.

DSC05294

When in Philly, (chicken) cheesesteak.

DSC05248

Pocky stick snack.

DSC05282

Turkey cheese roll ups.

DSC05289

Dinner at Devon Seafood with my parents.

DSC05255

I had the bouillabaisse.

DSC05260

Chipotle night, midweek road trips tire you out.  My burrito was stuffed with chicken, pinto beans, peppers, cheese, sour cream, corn salsa, and lettuce.

DSC05300

Best for last, the one thing I actually cooked myself!

DSC05220

White quinoa / red lentils with lemon, tomato paste, and ginger / roasted zucchini and garlic sautéed mushrooms.

DSC05226

Have a great weekend!

St. Thomas Carnival 2016

As I mentioned in my last post, I hadn’t been home for Carnival since college.  This was heartbreaking because the fantastic month-long April festivities were one of my favorite things about growing up in the Caribbean.  The timing finally worked out of this vacation, and the timing of the reprieves from the rain gave us the chance to hit my three favorite Carnival events – food fair, the village, and the adult parade.

DSC03573

Food Fair

Food fair is a mix of local produce, foods, and crafts.

DSC03536

DSC03529

DSC03547

DSC03544

Basically you steel yourself against beautifully ear-splitting steel pan music (did everyone appreciate that pun??) and eat yourself silly.

DSC03526

DSC03552

Our bite highlights included…

Soursop nectar!!!  Soursop – also known as guanabana; the flavor is a super creamy and reminiscent of a blend of strawberry and pineapple – is my favorite fruit and it practically impossible to find fresh in the continental US.

DSC03531

DSC03535

Pumpkin dumplings.

DSC03540

Salt fish patty.  <– pronounced like pâté, fried dough stuffed with any type of meat, usually beef, chicken, or cod.

DSC03550

We did not get fried fish or baked mac and cheese and I’m still kind of kicking myself for it.

Carnival Village

Village is a giant parking lot that gets transformed with food/drink booths and children’s rides and games.

DSC03555

DSC03567

DSC03569

You can buy snaps there and it is literally the funniest thing on earth to throw them at people’s feet.  <– says me, I’m not sure my parents or Adam would agree!

DSC03560

Our nighttimes were busy but we had to stop by in the afternoon because our friends’ vodka was available at one of the booths.

DSC03563

Tasty!

DSC03572

Adult Parade

The Carnival parades are just like any parade in the states except they’re a million times better.  Troupes decorate floats, wear snazzy costumes, and do insane dance routines down the street.  The music is blaring and wonderful and since we don’t have any open container laws there’s always a ton of liquor.

DSC03701

DSC03679

DSC03703

DSC03683

DSC03688

DSC03710

Fun fact #1 – when I was in Pony Club I did the children’s parade twice; one year I rode a horse but the first year I walked behind the horses and scooped poop.  <– yes, there are pictures, and no, I will never share them

Fun fact #2 – when I was a junior in high school I was in a troupe in the adult parade.  I did not let my absolute lack of rhythm hold me back.  We supposed to be some kind of bird (birds of paradise?) and we wore neon green bathing suits and I got second degree burns on the shoulders because I forgot to put sunscreen under my feathers.

{The Best} St. Thomas Visit 2016

DSC03757

DSC03758

DSC03762

Adam and I started our two-week vacation off right with an incredible visit home to see my parents and soak up some sun.  For the first time since college I managed to have the dates line up so that I could make it for Carnival*!  We also went to St. John*, The Baths*, the beach, and got to spend time with old friends.  It was pretty much the perfect trip.

* I took way too many pictures so all of the items starred above are going to have to be their own posts over the rest of the week

DSC03774

DSC03775

Speaking of too many pictures, I’m limiting this post to the highlights.  Here are some of our favorites from home…

The best hosts – my parents.  In addition to driving us all over the place, ironing my dresses, playing board games even though Adam always throws a fit, and just being generally amazing, they cooked us Adam’s favorite meal and my favorite dessert.  Bill Clinton’s Enchiladas.

DSC03653

And key lime pie.

DSC03655

Which meant there was leftover pie for me to eat on top of Greek yogurt.  <– the best thing ever

DSC03677

I always serve it with flax so it’s basically a health food.

The best breakfast – Barefoot Buddha.

DSC03663

I got an iced Vietnamese latte and the sandwich I ate on my wedding day, aka the Bigfood Bagel sandwich: egg frittata, smoked turkey, turkey bacon, cream cheese, sharp cheddar cheese, chipotle aioli, tomato-onion coulis, and fresh spinach.

The best brunch – The Grille Room at Mahogany Run. My (extra-spicy) Bloody Mary came topped with a stuffed olive, banana pepper, and shrimp!

13129432_641053512699135_2114858904_n

I also had a really top-notch chopped salad with shrimp and chipotle-ranch among other yummy things.  And then every singe person at the table ordered a vodka + soda and all was right with the world.

The best coffee – Bad Ass at Yacht Haven.

DSC03754

My triple non-fat iced latte was perfectly roasty good.

The best pizza – Island Time Pub.  Pro tip – start with a salad, they are gigantic and two-three people can share one.

DSC03672

Adam and I got a pie with artichoke, Kalamata olives, and roasted garlic.

DSC03674

Plus their drink menu is on point.

The best johnny cake – served at the window on the Waterfront by The Greenhouse, with cheese.

DSC03779

Caribbean johnny cake (versus the cornmeal version found in the American south) is slightly sweet, unleavened fried bread.  It is delicious in general and freaking mind-blowing when served with cheese.

DSC03666

Was It Blogvious?

Adam’s back, yay!  Surprise?  I tried to keep it under wraps for security reasons, so I hope it wasn’t blogvious (<– totally unnecessary portmanteau for obvious on the blog) that Adam has been out of town for the past month.  He had a trauma rotation in Texas and the dog and I missed him like crazy!  Now he’s back and we both have two weeks off of work and I plan on spending the majority of them holding his hand!

Foodwise, here were the weekend highlights…

Adam didn’t get back into town until late Sunday evening and I spent the better part of the day hyperventilating with excitement.  I distracted myself for a little bit with Vietnamese iced coffee and a pedicure.

DSC03507

DSC03504

Fun fact – toe nail polish was my something blue in my wedding.

Another day, another coffee.

DSC03513

I usually skip over Gala apples but this one was very sweet and crisp.

Brunch with friends at Du Jour Bakery, my new favorite breakfast spot in Park Slope.  The space feels totally open and airy and they have yummy iced lattes.

DSC03492

I ordered the brioche French toast with maple butterscotch, berries, and whipped cream.

12599439_494486650750199_618129038_n

It was good, but I need to accept the fact that I don’t really like French toast.  My girlfriends got savory egg sandwiches that I think I would love.

Dinner at Pearl’s Bake and Shark, a newish Trinidadian spot in Williamsburg.  My bake and jerk chicken was very tasty.

12965710_577630305752870_610441212_n

Aka pulled jerk chicken on fried dough, with pickled slaw and pineapple salsa.  The chicken didn’t taste like the jerk I grew up with, but it was smoky delicious.

Bbq turkey salad at home.

DSC03517

Baby spinach dressed with creamy Greek dressing / avocado / cucumber / chopped turkey breast tossed in cola bbq sauce / brie / a sprinkle of smoked paprika.  A great combo; the paprika was such a good addition.

This Week I Loved…

Yogurt bowls

Guava Chobani with Cheerios, walnuts, pomegranate, and blackberry.

DSC03489

More of the above, but with mango soursop as my tropical yogurt flavor.

DSC03458

Plain Fage with granola, chocolate covered cacao nibs, walnuts, a turtle pecan biscotti, pomegranate, and blackberry.  <– best lunch of the week

DSC03473

Earl Grey Rooibos tea

DSC03446

DSC03368

DSC03485

Cookie butter

I ate a big spoonful as my after-work snack every day this week.

DSC03453

And I ate a delicious lunchtime oatmeal in the last of the Biscoff jar.

DSC03440

The expanded menu at Boba Guys

A girlfriend and I got Hong Kong Milk teas this week and were swooning!  Best boba I’ve gotten in the city and they have housemade almond and grass jellies.

12965245_480936585425551_3131280_n

The fantastically fun supplies from Mochi Things

My mom sent me some snazzy stickers and pens for Easter and they are greatly improving my workday mood.

12383238_610147515805990_2037909035_n

This lip stuff

Minted rose is obviously the best scented beauty product I’ve ever owned.

What rocked your socks this week?
