Last Week’s Top Ten

{1} Swapping out my wardrobe to welcome in the spring-ish weather.

So today and tomorrow are supposed to be pretty darn cold, but the rest of the month is looking so nice that I went ahead and traded my summer and winter gear.  Scarves and boots are still available but if we get a freak snowstorm I’m out of luck because all my coats are at the cleaners.  It felt good to get that big project done.

{2} Enjoying coffee again.

Extra espresso in my giant iced latte?  My health is officially back to 100%.

DSC03219

DSC03277

This upcoming week I did brew a batch so I won’t have an excuse to buy coffee out every day.

{3} Berry smoothie.

Maple kefir, dates, and frozen mixed berries.

DSC03248

Kefir was the perfect smoothie liquid.

{4} Dessert-y oatmeal bowls for lunch.

Oats with chia, freeze-dried raspberries, pecans, and strawberry shortcake M&Ms.

DSC03215

Oats with chia, freeze-dried raspberries, and a big scoop of Biscoff.

DSC03237

I bought a jar of Biscoff last Saturday and it is practically empty now – – I am the only member of the household who eats Biscoff.

{5} National Pecan Day is April 14th and Nonni’s sent* me some Turtle Pecan Biscotti to celebrate.

*Free sample alert – no additional compensation was provided for this post, all opinions are my own.

DSC03226

The biscotti was quite good next to my coffee – crunchy but not toothbreakingly so and a good balance of salty and sweet.

DSC03232

But even better crushed into my all-time best yogurt combo.  Turtle pecan yogurt bowl: maple yogurt, toasted pecans, chocolate-covered cocoa nibs, biscotti, and chopped plucot.

DSC03257

Or check out Nonni’s Pinterest page for some other pairing ideas.

{6} Binge-watching “Hart of Dixie” on instantwatch.

Yes, the show where Rachel Bilson plays a doctor in the deep south.  And yes, it is totally a soap opera.  But it is completely addictive!  I am a woman obsessed, or I should say I was a women obsessed – I may have already finished watching all four seasons!

{7} Kombucha.

The Master Brew line from Kevita has been knocking my socks off.

DSC03284

Grapefruit was perfectly sweet and tart.

{8} Healthy sticks to scoop up less-healthy dips.

Baby carrots and green pepper in spinach and artichoke dip.

DSC03264

Apple slices in melted Biscoff and dark chocolate peanut butter.

DSC03239

Apple dippers in cookie butter are even more satisfying than licking it off of a spoon like I usually do.

{9} Taco brinner.

We loved our fish tacos so much the week before that I knew we needed a repeat.

DSC03270

This time our hard shells were stuffed with sautéed onions and peppers, shredded cheese, roasted tomatillo salsa, and scrambled eggs.  This was practically the only meal I cooked all week, the other nights I mostly ate chips with cheese and salsa so I’d have time to watch my stories!

{10} Chuko Ramen.

I introduced a girlfriend to the joy that is their veggie miso with a soft egg and chili garlic oil on top.

ramen

It is the perfect dinner spot because Ample Hill’s ice cream is just a short walk down the block!

What are you looking forward to this week?

Last Week/End’s Best Eats {Pumpkin Beer Galore}

DSC00757

I have just not had the blogging bug lately.  I’ve been eating yummy foods (duh!) and making some great new recipes but recently I have not been able to make myself sit down and write.  This week I have a Redux post due so you’ll be hearing from me at least once.  And below is a quick round-up of the very best bites from last week…

Pumpkin beers.

DSC00797

DSC00780

DSC00750

I totally get why Kath is obsessed with Schlafly, it’s amazing.  The Leaf Pile was pretty fantastic too.

Yogurt bowls.

DSC00789

DSC00761

More pumpkin.  That orange thing that looks like a mini pumpkin is a persimmon.

Lobster rolls.

DSC00771

Luke’s never fails.  I took a girlfriend for her very first cold lobster roll and it was love at first bite.

Brooklyn Bagel.

brooklyn bagel

Coconut bagel with pumpkin cream cheese.

Pizza.

DSC00778

TJ’s whole wheat crust topped with bbq sauce, tons of sautéed onions and mushrooms, and two kinds of mozzarella.

Tamarind candy from home.

DSC00768

Perfectly sweet and sour.  When I was a little girl I rode horses and we could pick tamarind pods from our saddles and snack our way through Pony Club so the flavor makes me very nostalgic.

Brunch at Thirsty Koala.

DSC00804

Australian coffee = an iced latte with a scoop of ice cream.  I also got a stack of Jaffles.

DSC00807

“The Bergs” had cheddar, manchego, goats cheese, fruit chutney on sourdough.

DSC00809

Aka an insanely gooey grilled cheese.  Yet another Astoria spot we now love.

It is weird for me to be taciturn, hopefully I’ll have more to say in a few days!

This Week’s Top Five

{1} Coffee.

I know this gets repetitive but coffee is just so freaking good!

DSC00057

DSC00098

DSC00050

The winner this week was the double espresso with ice and cream from a coffee shop near my hospital.

{2} Chocolate with pretzels.

I brought the toffee candy to work and my co-workers lost their minds over it.  We did too; it was a good thing I got it out of the house or I think Adam and I could have finished the tray in a day or two.

DSC00071

Also yummy pretzel chocolate from Lindt.

DSC00081

Yes, I had dessert every evening this week.

{3} Apple month stuff.

Apple-pear pouch.  I sprinkled the SuperSeedz on a pretty killer salad from the cafeteria salad bar.

DSC00073

Salted caramel apple granola (with chia seeds) on my yogurt.

DSC00091

And this apple explosion lunch.

DSC00107

Caramel apple oatmeal, TJ’s freeze-dried apples, and Salty Road caramel apple taffy.

{4} Loaded baked potatoes.

These bowls were fantastic.

DSC00086

Baked potato / roasted broccoli with green onions / homemade baked beans / topped with plain yogurt, sharp cheddar, and green Tabasco.

DSC00090

For the baked beans: Sauté tons of white and yellow chopped onions.  Add sliced turkey hot dogs, pinto beans, and tomato sauce and let things cook for awhile.  Then season with brown sugar and Gochujang.

DSC00099

They were so yummy I ate the leftovers cold.

{5} Dinner at Mile End.

Mile End Delicatessen is my new favorite deli, which is a big deal because the place I grew up going to had a pickle bar!  MED did have tasty hibiscus beer…

DSC00058

And poutine made with smoked chicken gravy.

DSC00062

And roasted cauliflower with caraway honey, harissa paste, and toasted pistachios.  This had the best texture, crunchy on the outside and silky soft in the middle.

DSC00063

I ordered the turkey reuben for dinner.

DSC00066

Did not disappoint.

{Bonus} New CDs.

My parents are amazing, and they send us mixed tapes all of the time.  They both made new ones recently so this is how my mother labeled them –

DSC00076

Lol!

This Week’s Top Five

{1} My coffee combo.

DSC09952

Community Coffee with cocoa powder, maple cinnamon, cream, and milk.

DSC09946

The cocoa doesn’t really mix in with the cold coffee but it’s still good.

DSC09965

Now I want to do a coconut-cocoa coffee next.

{2} Bars.

DSC09957

DSC09960

Most nights this week I was soooo hungry when I got home and having these to grab saved me from some major hangry fits.  Not that we still didn’t go get Chipotle instead of cooking two nights in a row.

{3} This lunch.  Trimona plain yogurt with Heritage Flakes, chia seeds, and chopped emerald beauty and honey punch pluots. <– how great are those names??!

DSC09970

Plus a bourbon brown butter caramel and a salty caramel apple taffy for dessert.

{4} This fancy Thursday night dinner.

DSC09978

I sautéed spinach with minced ginger, garlic aioli, and evoo, then tossed in gnocchi and roasted zucchini.

DSC09990

Topped with this hot smoked sockeye from Trader Joe’s.

DSC09973

DSC09984

Best meal of the week!  The salmon was wonderful; I love hot smoked because it has a similar flavor to lox but not the slimy texture.

{5} Caramel apple Peeps.  OMG.

DSC09954

These were seriously delicious; are all Peeps this yummy??  They were puffy and not too chewy and they had a perfect balance of sour dust to sweet caramel fudge.  I’m awarding this best purchase yet for Apple Month.

Royal Weekend; Highlights

Normally I am a Brooklyn girl, but over the three-day weekend I spent some time loving Queens.  One day for Flushing and one for Astoria.  Also Adam and I both had Monday off and we spent the day eating our way from Chelsea to SoHo!

Here are the highlights, minus several ice cream stops and several more coffees…

Doughnut date!

DSC09865

Chocolate salted caramel from Dough and a latte from Blue Sky.

Fancy yogurt bowls.

DSC09901

Plain Siggis + 2 types of plucot + chia seeds + crumbled graham cracker pie crust.

DSC09902

The crust was leftover from a failed s’mores cookie batch I attempted last week.

Brunch with a girlfriend at Burnside Biscuits.  We both got Salty Dogs.

DSC09884

And I got a classic (duck fat!) biscuit with a sunny side up egg and sharp cheddar.

DSC09888

Related:: Adam and I went to Sweet Chick for a dimly lit dinner and had duck sloppy joes.  Also two different cocktails with sherry!

Sandwiches at BEC = bacon, egg, and cheese.

DSC09925

I got a Junior with turkey bacon.

Sandwiches at Blue Ribbon.  I got the pulled bbq chicken with cole slaw on top.

DSC09932

BRFC feels pretty chain restaurant/fast food but the sandwich was delicious.  The bun was meh (I rarely eat the bun on a sandwich like this anyway) but the chicken was juicy with some perfectly charred crispy bites.

Presso Coffee is the cutest and their maple lattes are on point.

DSC09912

DSC09909

Related:: another day I got a quad nonfat latte from Kinship Coffee Cooperative that was super good.

Oreo milk tea with boba and pudding from Kung Fu Tea.

DSC09914

We explored the New World Mall food court and want to go back asap.

DSC09918

We didn’t stop to eat that day though, our hearts were already set on Xi’an Famous Foods.

DSC09921

Their spicy hand-torn noodles make the most satisfying dish you’ve ever tasted.

Trader Joe’s chile relleno is the best frozen meal ever.

DSC09890

DSC09894

I would give this dish two thumbs up if I thought a restaurant had made it fresh.

Important note – you can buy cups of edible cookie dough.

DSC09937

DSC09941

Just fyi.

Enjoy the rest of your week!

Weekly Wrap-Up, Weddings Have Great Food

breakfast

Coffee.  With Hint of Honey Almond Milk and a GoMacro Bar.

DSC09619

Or seltzer and an applesauce.

DSC09636

Or chocolate milk.

DSC09663

Another morning I tried to do the coffee + chocolate milk combo but my cafeteria was out of milk so I just drank it black and I had a stomach ache for the rest of the day.

lunch

Yogurt.  Strawberry Fage with plucots and pumpkin seeds on the side.

DSC09618

Oatmeal.  Quaker Summer Berry oats with Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut Butter on top and plucots on the side.

DSC09634

Sandwich.  A monster from the cafeteria with spicy turkey and fresh mozzarella on a brioche roll.

20150825_121654

Leftovers.  Egg salad (see below), TJ’s Crispy Broccoli – which I dumped into the egg salad! – and an apple.

dinner

I am missing many photos from the start and end of this week, but I did a pretty good job capturing the middle days.

Monday my camera was dead all afternoon and through the evening.  You didn’t miss much though, I ate two grilled cheese sandwiches in bed.  Then I ate a second dinner of Thai take-out.  Also in bed.  Related fact – I have been burning through episodes of “Body of Proof” at an alarming rate.  It’s bad; not just the fact that I’m watching the show obsessively, but the show itself, is bad.

Tuesday was frozen shrimp goyza from Trader Joe’s.

DSC09628

We sautéed broccoli and bok choy with ginger, garlic, rice vinegar, and soy sauce and served our pan-fried goyza on top.

I woke up early Wednesday morning to hard-boil eggs for salad.

DSC09647

This was eggs with minced red bell pepper, mayo and a healthy dollop of sesame gojuchang which gave the salad a great spice and a little bit of smokiness.

DSC09654

With roasted green beans on the side.

DSC09649

Roasted green beans have always been one of my favorite foods but now that I’ve started topping them with sliced shallots they’re on a whole new level.

Thursday night I was way less pathetic, but I still don’t have any pictures.  A Buffalo friend came into town and took me to a wedding.  The event was in LIC at The Foundry and it was beyond gorgeous but way too dark for food pictures.

DSC09668

I ate hummus, cocktails, mini cupcakes, and all the other wedding trappings but the only photo I have is a blurry shot of my friend and me.

IMG_19261

Fun fact – I met her straight from work and I had to get dressed in a Barnes and Nobel bathroom.  I am the classiest.

IMG_20150827_180103

I took today off to spend the morning with my girlfriend before she drives home so I have this whole Friday ahead of me to watch Body of Proof do fun stuff in the city!

Left My Heart In Montana

I’m missing a lot of photos this week but the meals I do have to share were off the charts good.

lunch

Mostly I did lunches from the cafeteria this week, like a tasty broccoli and cheese baked potato whose cell-phone photo was an absolute horror.  Packed lunches featured a great fruit salad – Cara Cara Orange, strawberries, and 3 varieties of pluot.

DSC09490

DSC09523

With plain yogurt and Nature’s Path Heritage Flakes.

notable snacks

Fresh mint in sparkling water is my jam.  This “mojito” rocked our socks off.

DSC09431

We’ve kept the dessert every day thing going.  One morning Adam took me to work and we tried the doughnuts at Elsie’s Parlor.  I got the Confettura Di Fichi – filled with fig jam and topped with mascarpone and toasted almonds.

DSC09435

I loved the idea of this, especially because the fig jam and mascarpone were delicious, but the texture was terrible, way too dense.  If I thought of it was a muffin it was great, but as a doughnut I ate half and we moved on to a tried and true.

DSC09438

DSC09441

Now that’s a doughnut!  My peaches and crème doughseed had just the right balance of fluff and chew.  Plus it was perfectly tangy and sweet.

Vegan ice cream from Sky Ice.

DSC09445

Thai iced coffee and Thai young coconut went great together.

Ice cream from Oddfellows.

DSC09477

S’mores with amazing caramelized white chocolate with toasted almond.

Guava-cheese empanadas.

DSC09526

Enjoyed with Ruth Reichl’s novel, which I read in a day and a half and enjoyed even more than her memoir.  She is such a good story-teller and her food writing makes your mouth water.

dinner

Leftover Korilla knock-off bowls were still yummy.

DSC09488

I stir-fried mine with eggs to make up for the missing one on top.

DSC09483

Also I kind of burnt the life out of it, but this was still good.

It was fitting that I put this dinner on my heart plate because I loved-loved-loved it.

DSC09503

A tiny roasted pile of every single okra I could find at the stores this weekend.

DSC09511

Plus I snacked on this for extra veggies.

DSC09495

Toasted ciabatta sandwich with turkey, turkey bacon, Colby jack, and Smart Balance.

DSC09515

The cheese was extra-thin sliced and it melted to perfection.

We checked out Bushwick’s Montana’s Trail House and our best meal of the week ended up being the best meal of the year!

DSC09473

Adorable décor, amazing service, and freshly made food – most of it local – with well-balanced flavors.

DSC09447

Captain Stormalong – Standard Heartcut White Whiskey, Campari, Demerara & Topped with Downeast Cider.

DSC09450

Riff Randell – Vodka, Krupnikas Honey Liqueur, Contratto Aperitif, Luxardo Maraschino, Acid Phosphate, Sparkling Wine.  This was the best drink we’ve ever had.  It was like drinking pure honey but in an amazing way.  Similar to a great honey meade I had in SF.

DSC09456

We started with the charred green beans – which were topped with browned garlic and soft-cooked eggs and served on top of housemade ricotta.  This was the best dish of the year, the lemony ricotta was fantastic with the drippy eggs and charred greens.

DSC09460

Then we shared the dinosaur kale salad – with feta, roasted carrots, and kale that was grown in the restaurant’s rooftop garden!

DSC09464

And the fried chicken with honey butter and housemade hot sauce.  Best fried chicken ever; super juicy and every bite had a whiff of honey.

DSC09467

Dessert – aka the course I saw on Instagram that made me move this restaurant to my “must-eat” list – was banana bread s’mores.  <– squee!

DSC09472

Also they brought us complimentary shots with our bill because we’d been raving about every bite we took.  Love.  NYC people – get yourself to Bushwick, you won’t regret it!

(Frozen)Yogurt

breakfast

Coffee!

DSC09271

With caramel.

DSC09265

Or with Hint of Honey Almond Milk and plums.

DSC09308

Or a Clif Bar.

DSC09320

Also one morning my coworker brought in yummy poppy-seed Danish.

20150811_094424

lunch

I had a really great sandwich with spicy sliced chicken, pickles, and fresh mozzarella from the cafeteria.

20150811_120255

The other days I did yogurt bowls featuring the new blended flavors from Chobani.  Coffee with plums and KIND peanut butter granola.

DSC09263

Mixed berry with blueberries, raspberries, multi-grain o’s and Nature’s Path Heritage Flakes.

DSC09302

And vanilla with more berries and bran flakes.

DSC09316

The texture of the 2% yogurt was seriously creamy and good.

dinner

I can’t show you Monday/Tuesday’s dinner because it is my Recipe Redux for this month.  I will show you some of the tasty stuff we had with it though… Like roasted green beans on the side.  I added thinly sliced shallots and they got insanely crispy, crunchy, good.

DSC09280

And frozen yogurt for dessert.  With all of the chocolate toppings.

DSC09299

We liked the Nutella on top so much we ended up going back again the next night.

Wednesday was Webster’s Buyday (the anniversary of the day we brought him home) so we made a special dinner with some of his favorite foods – Nachos!  Chips with cheese, broccoli, cilantro, and chicken (pronounced chick-ON chick-ON in this house).

DSC09323

He even had his own little dish.

DSC09327

And of course we got Chipotle.

DSC09312

Of course.

random thoughts

I am so freaking excited that Target is doing away with gender-based labeling in some of its children’s aisles!  When I worked at a toy store in college I hated when people would come in and ask for “boy toys” or “girl toys.”  This awesome graph sums up my thoughts pretty well –

gender based toys

I’ve already seen some pumpkin beers and it is taking all of my self-control to not start stockpiling.  I’ve told myself that I’m waiting until mid-September.

Poorly Drawn Lines is always hilarious but I feel like this week’s comics have been especially great.

poorly drawn lines

We had dessert every single night this week.  I want to nip that daily habit in the bud, but I also have fifteen plus new ice cream joints that I want to visit before summer ends.

DSC09276
