Three Kinds Of Eggs

Highlights from this week included eggs served three different ways, a new take on pesto, and my current favorite snack combo…

The week started out on a high point – a breakfast date at Golda.

IMG_9088

Quad espresso + ice + cream.

IMG_9084

I had the grilled asparagus toast – strawberry-chili mostarda / alfalfa / ras al hanout / soft egg / charred lemon / local sourdough.

IMG_9096

Homemade coffee combo = half and half, ice, and Stumptown Founders blend.

IMG_9159

Snacks of note include fresh alfonso mango with cottage cheese.

IMG_9166

Our Deadpool movie snack was right on the nose.  DP 2 was not as good as the first movie but still laugh out loud funny.

IMG_9137

My current favorite snack combo is roasted chickpeas with blistered peanuts.  Eaten in bulk.

IMG_9104

Tuesday – my early day, when I leave the house before 6 am – I drove across town after work to attend what ended up being a very disappointing lecture on TPN.  The speaker ran a bit late and I didn’t start heading home until after 9 pm, at which point I was basically whimpering from hunger.  Suffice to say, this is the most satisfying Chipotle bowl that’s ever been eaten!

IMG_9135

The other three nights I cooked legitimate meals and had some major successes in the kitchen!  Like a Mediterranean frittata, complete with a new recipe page.

IMG_9119

Replete with feta, zucchini, and sumac.

IMG_9125

One night I made okonomiyaki.  We use three eggs and a heaping 1/3 cup flour for 2 servings.  With shredded garnet yam, roasted cabbage, and ginger.  Topped with Sriracha, Kewpie mayo, green onion, and seaweed.

IMG_9147

I also tried a new take on pesto that turned out to be delicious.  The last time we made homemade pesto we found the raw garlic and basil to be a bit too spicy, so this time I cooked them.  Sweet onion, green onion, and garlic sauteed in evoo / basil cooked with the onion for 90 seconds or so / tossed in the food processor with more evoo, parmesan, and pine nuts.  Served with whole wheat pasta with baby kale, toasted white beans, and roasted heirloom tomato.

IMG_9170

Weekend plans include a bridge walk, a bar date, and a bbq spot.

Three Things

Three things I liked this week:

{1}  Mint iced coffee!  Irving Farms espresso roast / half and half / homemade vanilla mint simple syrup.

IMG_8791

{2}  Kefir and apple work snacks.

IMG_8782

IMG_8788

{3}  Starbucks’ prepared sandwiches that I’m weirdly obsessed with.  Chicken and artichoke flatbread with provolone and sun-dried tomato pesto.

IMG_8805

Three things I loved this week:

{1}  Homemade turkey cheeseburger fried rice.

Leftover brown rice stir-fried with soy sauce and liquid smoke / sauteed onions / roasted cherry tomatoes / ground turkey sauteed with fish sauce, ketchup, and mayo / eggs / cheddar cheese.

IMG_8826

{2}  Dinner at Pig and Khao.  I went with a girlfriend for her first visit and she loved it!

I ordered not one, but two, new to me dishes that were amazing.  Mushroom salad with shrimp and fried garlic and green papaya salad with chicken and crispy taro.

IMG_8800

{3}  Dinner at Freeks Mill that knocked our socks off.

IMG_8809

We started with roasted baby carrots with marcona almonds and herbed goat cheese.

IMG_8811

And we ordered all the poultry on the menu for dinner.  Chicken for Adam, smoked Poulet Rouge with wild mushrooms and spinach.

IMG_8817

Duck for me, dry aged duck with fried cranberry beans, fennel, and rosemary honey.  <– this was the singe best thing I've ever eaten!

IMG_8814

Three things I’m obsessing about that you don’t know about yet:

{1}  Nonfat quad iced lattes from Hungry Ghost.  There are three HGs on my walk to work and it is becoming a problem.

IMG_8820

{2}  Stolen Dance by Milky Chance.  This song is basically magic – I listened to it on a run and I swear my legs moved 50% more quickly than usual.

{3}  Moving??!  I’m not sure how I haven’t blogged about this yet, but yes, we’re moving!  Adam is doing his Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at UVA next year.  So we’re moving to Charlottesville.  In 50 days.  !!!

My Favorite Thing I’ve Eaten

Top five from last week –

{1}  My favorite thing I’ve ever eaten!  Also the most “me” thing I’ve ever eaten.  Quad shot, iced, birthday cake latte (with birthday cake sprinkle sand!!) from Milk Bar.

IMG_8412

{2}  Vanilla bean Greek yogurt with the amazing Alphonso mango.  Plus a guava kombucha.

IMG_8448

{3}  BBQ from Fletcher’s.  I had smoked chicken and cole slaw.  Important note: they now sell their amazing sauce to take home. <– highly recommend.

IMG_8405

{4}  Bahn mi chicken salad.  With baby carrots, roasted broccoli, and Korean bbq kettle chips.

IMG_8441

IMG_8436

{5}  Giant Greek salad bowls.  Local oak leaf greens from Greenpoint / TJ’s Greek feta dressing / heirloom tomato / cucumber / roasted chickpeas / dolmas.

IMG_8466

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I (Strawberry) Heart…

The five most exciting edible things from this weekend  —

{1}  There’s a new cookie dough place in our mall.  The serving size was stupid big and they wouldn’t let us split the scoop into two flavors but it was delicious.  We went with  Oreo.

IMG_8376

{2}  I discovered a Sonic that’s not super far from our house.  How excited am I about strawberry diet cokes??

IMG_8345

{3}  I’m back on the coffee obsession train.  I was feeling a little under the weather last week and it was hard for me to drink anything roasty but thank goodness that’s over.

IMG_8365

IMG_8368

{4}  The worker at Chipotle was extra generous with the fajita veggies and cheese and I ended up with a wonderful salad – romaine / chicken / pinto beans / peppers and onions / corn salsa / hot salsa / cheese.

IMG_8384

{5}  We went to Hanco’s and I had Vietnamese iced coffee with strawberry jelly hearts in it!  Plus a really fantastic bahn mi with vegan pork (tofu).

IMG_8390

P.S. Today’s my day off!  And it’s also Adam’s day off!!  And we are going into Brooklyn for lunch!!!

Chili Cheese Fries Because It’s Still Chilly

Seriously, why is it so chilly still??  Over the weekend I dry cleaned our winter coats, packed up our sweaters, swapped boots for sandals, etc, etc, and then Monday morning it was a balmy 30 degrees.

Freezer-burn aside, I had quite a nice week!  Tuesday I took a personal day to spend time with Adam post-call and we tried some yummy spots in Bayside.  And I’m off again today because I work this weekend.

Here were the highlights from the week…

Chocolate glazed doughnut (from Dough) and a maple iced latte at Browny.

IMG_8289

Juicy watermelon wonder kombucha.

IMG_8260

Chia pudding.  Chia seeds / skim milk / maple syrup / vanilla bean powder / sliced banana.

IMG_8325

Peanuts are my favorite snack at the moment.

IMG_8332

Dinner out at Maria’s Mediterranean.  We got some complimentary bites to start, including the best olives I’ve ever tasted.

IMG_8290

Plus we ordered the chips and dip – housemade pita chips with tatziki / melitzanosalata, roasted eggplant puree / and tirokafteri, spicy feta spread.

IMG_8296

I got the spanikopita for my entree.

IMG_8299

And we tried something fun for dessert – ekmek, a bread pudding-baklava mash up with syrup-soaked shredded phyllo, custard, and whipped cream.

IMG_8304

I leaned into the weather and made us big steamy bowls of chili.  A loose version of this recipe from Iowa Girl Eats that is our favorite.  The baked beans take it over the top.

IMG_8283

I topped my bowl with sharp cheddar, plain Greek yogurt, and tons of Sriracha.

IMG_8274

Our leftovers turned into cheese fries!  Waffle fries / cheese – TJ’s 3 cheese blend / chili / bacon leftover duck.  Plus green beans for something green.

IMG_8314

And yesterday I made buffalo chicken meatballs.  Ground chicken / panade / buffalo sauce / egg / cream cheese / cheddar.  Plus sauteed carrots and celery to stay on theme.

IMG_8339

It’s supposed to warm up this weekend, woo-hoo!

Bunny Bites

The best things I ate this weekend were…

Easter candy!  So much Easter candy.

IMG_8052

IMG_8070

Plus I made Oreo truffle balls with purple marshmallow Peep Oreos.

IMG_8069

Lunch at Little Skips, an adorable coffee spot in Bushwick.

IMG_8021

IMG_8022

IMG_8041

I got a bomb latte aka a latte that’s the bomb because it has sweetened condensed milk in it.

IMG_8029

And a vegan blt with smokey maple tempeh bacon, tomato, mixed greens, and house-made vegan cilantro-lime aioli on wheat toast.

IMG_8037

Hawaiian desserts at Mahalo Bakery.  We split a milk lovers cupcake (vanilla cake infused with a concoction of milks with cardamom spice and topped with whipped cream) and a slice of haupia pie (layers of semi-sweet Belgium chocolate, haupia, and coconut whipped cream).

IMG_8046

Black eyed pea salad.  We love this dish, it’s super tasty but easy-(black eyed) peasy.  BEP / green bell pepper / smoked almonds / Kerrygold Dubliner cheese / Cholula hot sauce.

IMG_8057

Spicy cabbage salad with shrimp.  I loosely followed this recipe from Bon Appetit that I am obsessed with.

IMG_8084

Have a great week!

IMG_8089

And Now My Favorite Color is Zhough

Highlights from the week…

Fancy shmancy coffee.  I cold pressed espresso roast with vanilla bean powder, brown sugar, and clove.

IMG_7575

Honestly though, my current favorite-favorite combo is espresso, ice, and chocolate milk.

IMG_7536

Milkadamia sent me a box for review [no cash was exchanged, all opinions are my own, yadda yadda].  Their macadamia nut milk is vegan, dairy-free, soy-free, and gluten-free.  The unsweetened vanilla has 50 calories, 1 gram of protein, and zero grams of sugar (1 gram carbohydrate) per 8 oz serving.  The milk has almost no flavor, but that is pretty much what I’m looking for in my nut milks because I want them to make my coffee creamy without distracting from the coffee taste.  The unsweetened vanilla went perfectly with a cup of iced coffee this week, no clumping or separation to be found.

IMG_7518

I also used it in a smoothie with frozen blueberries and coconut chunks, vanilla, maple, and chia seeds.

IMG_7534

My packed work eats were all about the Sumo mandarin and plain Greek yogurt combo.  With maple or granola.

IMG_7547

IMG_7614

Snack attack.  Peanut butter puffs.

IMG_7585

Mexican marshmallow shortbread cookies.

IMG_7544

Super sour soda and cola hard candies.

IMG_7583

Mini sundae from Van Leeuwen.  Cookies and cream topped with hot fudge, almond brittle, and sprinkles.

IMG_7606

IMG_7608

All of our dinners this week had a Middle Eastern bent, thanks to lots of zhough and copious amounts of olive oil.  Like scrambled egg pita sandwiches.  Scrambled eggs / sauteed orange bell pepper and red onion / whole wheat pita / zhough.  With roasted zucchini.

IMG_7590

Pita chip nachos!  Sharp cheddar / red onion and cucumber / marinated chickpeas with lemon juice, olive oil, fresh parsley, oregano, cayenne, and paprika / zhough and tzatziki.

IMG_7561

Veggie bowls.  Sauteed red onion, yellow bell pepper, and roasted eggplant / tomato sauce / marinated chickpeas / zhough and tzatziki / fried egg.

IMG_7628

Also pizza.  Is there a better food on the planet than buffalo chicken pizza??

IMG_7617

It’s almost the weekend!  Who has green beer on their Saturday agenda?

געשמאַק

Adam is post-call this morning and I am taking my weekend day off so we get to share the same space for a bit, woo-hoo!  We have some really exciting date options to chose from, like a grocery trip and maybe the gym.

I worked Saturday and Sunday – and was off on Friday but spent the entire day reading and/or watching tv – so I don’t have too much excitement to share this recap.  We did go on a very delicious dinner date Saturday night though.

weekend highlights…

Coffee coffee.

IMG_7469

IMG_7465

Cinnamon chocolate pudding.

IMG_7499

Snowdays shaved ice!  Black sesame with grass jelly, mochi, and strawberry sauce.

IMG_7474

Yesterday I made a dish that was moussaka-adjacent.  No potatoes but the other layers were there.  Roasted eggplant / sauteed turkey with tons of onions, spices, and tomato / mornay sauce with parmesan.

IMG_7508

And Saturday we did an awesome Israeli dinner at Timna.  You select an entree and then the table gets all of the appetizers tapas-style.  Also we ordered two desserts because we just couldn’t choose!  It was one of our best meals to date.  Falafel with pickled mango.

IMG_7479

Kubneh bread baked in a flower pot served with crushed tomato, creme-fraiche, and jalapeño salsa.

IMG_7485

Grilled beet salad with beluga lentils // tuna sashimi with green tabouli, tatziki, and ponzu // grilled cauliflower and artichoke with curried yogurt, homemade raisins, and pickled onion // smoked eggplant with feta cheese and sumac.

IMG_7483

I had “the fish,” striped bass with cherry tomato confit, grilled zucchini, grilled fennel, fried eggplant, Greek yogurt, and bread crumbs.  We loved the meal from start to finish but the fried eggplant was my favorite bite of the night.

IMG_7489

Kubneh bread with creme patisserie, white chocolate, and honey and sage ice cream.

IMG_7492

Sicilian pistachio ice cream with tahini, silan, and shredded halva.  swoon

IMG_7496

Back to the grind we go!
