Season’s Eatings; Christmas Wrap-Up

Merriment and good cheer all around!  I hope my readers who celebrate had a merry Christmas.  Adam, Webster, and I cuddled around the fireplace (Netflix had a fireplace video complete with crackles!) and had a grand time.

It’s been a busy week of eating, so instead of the typical wrap-up I’m just going to share some of the amazing seasonal goodies I enjoyed…

Lump of Coal dark holiday stout.  So good, we were impressed.

DSC04621

Yes, you see crackers in the background.  We made a cheese plate for Christmas dinner and it was just wonderful.

holiday cheese

Stumptown Winter Cheer Cold Brew split with the husband on Christmas morning.  Also so good, festive but not too spicy.

DSC04603

A big batch of cold brew which I mixed with low-fat eggnog for ahh-mazing breakfast coffees all week.

DSC04535DSC04540

Paired with holiday bars.

DSC04567DSC04591

Mint sparkling water from Whole Foods that rocked my face off.  Not as good as the strawberry variety, but a close second, especially when paired with a candy cane that my coworker delivered.

DSC04544DSC04546

Gingerbread Greek yogurt for lunch.  I enjoyed this even more than I was expecting to because it was sooo thick.

DSC04587

Awesome pasta.  Leftover snow-shape pasta tossed with turkey bacon, sautéed mushrooms, onion, and kale, and hunks of creamy blue cheese Cambozola.

DSC04560DSC04557

Egg ‘n’ Grog pie from Four and Twenty Blackbirds.  Basically creamy, sweet rum in a gingersnap crust.  Heavenly.

DSC04572

Growing up, for as long as I can remember, my family would open stockings and then eat scrambled eggs with red and green peppers before opening Christmas presents, so you know what we ate for brunch on Thursday.

DSC04618

Bonus – two off-theme snacks that were too good not to share.  The juice bar at Whole Foods is great, unsurprisingly, but the make-your-own option was surprisingly cheap.  I recommend this combo.

DSC04570

This Crispy, Crunchy, Mixed Fruit – coconut, pineapple, mango, and jackfruit – is fan-freaking-tastic!  I seriously could not stop eating it.  Crunch City.

DSC04547

Does your family have a Christmas food tradition?

Weekend Wrap-Up; Coffees and Burgers

Hooray for low-key weekends with lots of dog snuggles!  We spent lots of time on the couch, but I did manage to pre-prepare dinner for the next few nights (go me!).

coffees

DSC04501

We went to a new coffee spot in Great Neck to get me a Christmallow latte.

DSC04467DSC04469DSC04472

It was only ok, not as exciting as it looked, but I had practically been having a heart attack about getting one so at least I can shut up now.

Much better was the espresso I mixed with eggnog at home.

DSC04499

That ‘nog is low-fat but it is damn good, super creamy.

burgers

We ate burgers for dinner and brunch on Sunday. Bareburger for a classic first.

DSC04507

Turkey on a bun with grilled onions, mustard, ketchup, and tons of pickles.

Plus a smokey bloody mary made with bbq sauce.

DSC04503

And I stole many bites of Adam’s fried extravaganza chicken and waffle plate.

DSC04511

The balls towards the back were banana fritters.

Dinner was homemade round 2.

DSC04515

My Jalopeno Popper Turkey Burgers (one of my best recipes!) with cheddar on top.

DSC04520

Plus roasted broccoli.

DSC04526

And fries from Trader Joe’s.

DSC04523

So good!

also

The above wasn’t everything I ate this weekend, obviously, but there wasn’t much else worth mentioning. I will brag about getting dinner on the table like a boss on Saturday though.

DSC04486

We had a party to go to with Adam’s friends and I managed to get us fed by 6 pm versus the usual 9. And that was with a dinner-prep drink!

DSC04480

I made a dish from Cooking Light with some snowman pasta.

DSC04483DSC04479DSC04495

And roasted up these cool kale-brussels hybrids.

DSC04493DSC04475

We thought they were quite tasty.

Hope everyone has a great, festive week!

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas! Weekend Wrap-Up

It’s only 10 days ’til Christmas!  And Hannukah starts tomorrow!  And it was Adam’s 29th birthday on Thursday!  We had a lot to celebrate this weekend.  The last three days have been fabulous.  Lots of great meals, several at fancy restaurants, and they were usually followed by dessert!

Friday

Friday was a regular work day for me, but I had the excitement of knowing that the husband was coming to pick me up at the end of the day.  The switch to an electronic medical record system has gone fairly well, by the way; fingers are still crossed.

I ran out the door late in a flurry so breakfast came from Starbucks.

DSC04309

Iced latte and a fruit pouch that was not great.

Lunch was pretty much the same thing, since I didn’t pack anything and made it down to the cafeteria late in the day.

DSC04314

Iced coffee + chocolate milk, an apple, and a Gingerbread Larabar.

Plus some of the RDs came up to visit me – they liked my tiny office! – and brought me candy.

DSC04311

I don’t know where my Russian coworker gets those caramels but they are great.

Adam met me after work and we spent the evening in the city.  Our dinner reservations weren’t until 8:00 so we did dessert first on a visit to the Winter Village at Bryant – Brrrryant! – Park.

DSC04316DSC04331

We got a dulce de leche cookie,

DSC04326

then warmed up with a lusciously thick drinking chocolate – and a marshmallow! – from the from the Max Brenner stand.

DSC04328

OMG.  We have been buying and hating hot chocolate since San Francisco but this liquid gold was exactly what we’ve been searching for. Super thick and rich but not sickeningly sweet.

We had a mile-ish walk to dinner and I’m terribly sad that it was too cold for my camera because I was basically dying at the gorgeous lights along the way.

DSC04333

Tavern on the Green, Adam’s pick for his belated birthday dinner, was seasonally stunning as well.

DSC04351DSC04355DSC04336

I got a Queens cocktail – Bootlegger vodka, Velvet Falernum, sorrel hibiscus liquor, pomegranate molasses, and lemon juice.  Yummy, and perfectly balanced.

DSC04342

We shared the scallops with citrus butter, capers, and fried shallots to start. I’ve been having a love affair with fried shallots lately.

DSC04344

None of the entrees jumped out at me so I ordered two veggie sides, crimini mushrooms with blue cheese and basil and broccoli rabe with lemon, garlic, and sea salt.

DSC04346

It was a great night.

 Saturday

We had errands to run in SoHo on Saturday, so we parked in Brooklyn and took the train in and spent the day in the city.

There might have been booze in my coffee.

DSC04359

I bought a snickerdoodle lattee from Dunkin and added a healthy pour of Rumchata (aka the snickerdoodle shot) and it was damn good.

While we were in Brooklyn, we split a sardine Bahn Mi from Bahnmigos.

DSC04362

It was great! The little me who grew up in the Caribbean shunning seafood (whyyyy??) can’t believe I eat things like sardines and scallops now.

We did linner (super late lunch) at Freemans Restaurant.

DSC04370

Blue Ridge Fizz = apple brandy, maple, allspice, and champagne.  Freemans is our favorite brunch spot in the city and their cocktails are always magnificent.

DSC04364

I got poached eggs with tomato stewed kale, crispy shallots(!!), and hollandaise on sourdough toast.

DSC04369

My eggs ended up being overdone but I forgave them because the kale was so good.

We went next door to Morganstern’s for dessert.

DSC04374

We shared a cup of American egg custard and durian banana ice cream. Soo creamy! And the flavors were very true to life.

After a bit more exploring, we did round 2 at Sugar Sweet Sunshine.

DSC04376DSC04380

I got a shot of The Nog – pumpkin cake layered with eggnog pudding and whipped cream.

DSC04384

SSS never disappoints.

Sunday

Sunday was all about hanging out at home.  We would have stayed in our pajamas all day, had my dinner plans gone better.  We cuddled, watched tv, and got up some holiday decorations.

I woke up starving from our early dinner the night before so I made a big plate of eggs for breakfast.

DSC04388

Scrambled with chopped jalapeno, corn, sliced turkey, sour cream, and goat’s milk cheddar.

DSC04390

Plus Silk soy nog on the side.

DSC04393

Instead of toast, I snacked on a bag of salted caramel popcorn.

DSC04395

The plan for dinner was pasta with sun-dried tomato pesto but something went horribly wrong and my pesto was pretty much inedible.

DSC04398

Instead, we salvaged our veggie side,

DSC04400

and ventured out for Thai, stopping for mint chocolate froyo along the way.

IMAG0800DSC04402

Much better. Enjoyed in front of Scrubs – which we are rewatching for the millionth time – it was a great end to a great weekend.

This Week I Loved…

DSC04301

*Silk Soy Nog*

I adore eggnog, and this (vegan, 80 calories per half cup) stuff is at least 90% as good as the real thing.  Enjoyed in both overnight oats and cold brewed coffee.

DSC04288DSC04292DSC04298

*Sandwiches from the cafeteria*

I didn’t pack lunch for most of the week because I bought a sandwich on Tuesday and got hooked.  Turkey and provolone on an onion roll with mustard, mayo, and spicy banana peppers.

20141210_12474820141209_123832

*Chips*

I had tortilla chips – with cheese and fresh salsa – with my sandwich one day and became a woman obsessed.  I ended up making Adam a separate, grown-up person dinner and then eating chips and cheese several nights.

20141208_131742

*Cola-flavored candies*

So good!  Extra fizzy cherry cola Pop Rocks and cola float hard candies with a creamy center.

DSC04306

*A new book obsession*

Marion and Shiva Stone are twin brothers born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon. Orphaned by their mother’s death and their father’s disappearance, bound together by a preternatural connection and a shared fascination with medicine, the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution.

I finished Cutting for Stone this week and thought it was absolutely wonderful.  Author Abraham Verghese is a doctor as well as a writer and he did a skillful job of portraying the medical scenes in the story in clear and approachable way (most of the main characters are doctors so this came up a lot).  The characters are all flawed but beautiful, and I fell head over heals in love with Ghosh.

Weekend Top Three

{1} I made my Buffalo Chicken Baked Pasta.  But I made this version cheesier.

DSC03589

Like, soooo cheesy; I accidentally spilled in most of the bag of cheese when I meant to do an extra sprinkle.

DSC03608

I also added more buffalo wing sauce, a bit more spinach, and swapped in whole-wheat pasta, ranch, and lean ground turkey for chicken breasts.

DSC03658

DSC03592

It was delicious.

{2} We soothed our fiery mouths with pumpkin beers.

DSC03613DSC03582

All four ended up being fantastic.  I wasn’t expecting to love the ales because I tend to prefer stouts and ciders, but they were some of the best pumpkin brews of the season.

{3} I found on-point bubble tea right next to my work.

DSC03579

One of the doctors told me about it and I might have to give her my firstborn.  Awesomely chewy boba and tons of flavor options (they even had pumpkin!).  Shown above is strawberry rose black tea with tapioca and rainbow jelly.

Weekly Wrap Up

As of this morning, the cold of winter is finally here. Ugh. But I had a good final week of thin hoodies and no gloves. Good eats too! I did a lot of train eating – bars for breakfast, guava cheese empanadas… – but the LIRR was too packed for stealthy photography. Here’s what I did capture…

breakfast {coffee, coffee, coffee}

Never hot, I don’t care if it drops below zero, you can pry my iced coffee out of my cold, dead hands.

Chameleon cold brew with the last of the honey almond milk, which I loved.

DSC03502

Espresso! With milk and sugar.

DSC03529

I tried the chestnut praline latte from Starbucks. I really liked it.

DSC03540

Marshmallow cold brew.

DSC03546

lunch

Turkey, sharp cheddar, and pumpkin butter sandwich on a pumpkin spice English muffin.  With an apple and bbq chips.

DSC03499

Plus the last cookie.

DSC03544

Maple raisin oatmeal with a red pear.

DSC03506

And an afternoon treat of Turkish coffee that a coworker brought in.

turkish coffee

Dannon Creamery cherry cheesecake (yum, much better than the strawberry!) with chopped strawberries and blueberries. TJ’s kale chips. I passed the kale around the breakroom and my coworkers all said they might buy some themselves.

DSC03549

Dannon Creamery vanilla pudding with strawberries, plus the last of the kale chips and bbq chips. This was the best store-bought pudding I’ve ever tasted. And Adam stole the milk chocolate pudding and loved it.

DSC03536

I tried, and did not love, the new Coke.

DSC03559

dinner

When I got home on Monday, dinner was waiting in the crockpot for me.

DSC03516

Chicken with bbq sauce, smoked brown sugar, and fresh cranberries. I ate mine on a big bed of spinach.

DSC03522

We had salted caramel cheesecake and a yummy pumpkin beer for dessert.

DSC03513

Pizza and salad.

DSC03571

A giant bbq chicken slice from Pinos. The crust on these is amazing, super fluffy and light but still crunchy.

DSC03574

Plus Whole Foods hot bar – garlic broccoli, pickled cucumber, and salad with veggies on top.

DSC03576

We also got hot chocolate that we’d been excited about all week – supposedly it was made with ganache – that ended up being a big cup of hot milk.

DSC03567

You cant win ’em all.

No Sleep Till Brooklyn; Weekly Wrap-Up

Oh my gosh, Brooklyn is so freaking great!  <– I could probably just stop here, that pretty much sums up the salient points of this post

I was a little all over the place this week so I don’t have a ton of pictures to share, but Adam and I did go out to two amazing dinners that I need to rave about.  Other than that, I have about 30% of breakfast/lunch/snacks.

The husband worked several overnight shifts this week and I took advantage of my alone time by making the super adult decision to stay up until 3am on a work night catching up on the entire new season of “Criminal Minds.”

Here are some snippets of cafeteria breakfasts…

DSC03345

DSC03380

That second thing was some biscuit/pastry Western omelet hybrid.  Strange, but not bad.

And of course, there were many {many} coffees.

DSC03343

Yogurt bowl lunches…

DSC03376

DSC03400

KIND Banana Nut Clusters with my blackberries and butterscotch peanut butter with my raspberries.

And snacks at my desk…

DSC03347

DSC03382

I also bought the new peppermint cookie chocolate bites from Starbucks and they were great.

Now on to the good stuff, two amazing, fantastic, fantasmic, socks-rocking dinners in Brooklyn!

#1  Berlyn

DSC03350DSC03353

This space was gorgeous.  I couldn’t get any good shots of the décor (or the food for that matter!) but our table felt like it could be sitting in a clearing in some German forest.

I ordered the Hemingway Daiquiri and it ended up being the best cocktail I’ve ever been served.

DSC03355

The menu listed Caña Brava Rum, Luxardo Maraschino, grapefruit juice, and lime juice, but I swear that I could also taste cinnamon in there.  I liked it so much I kept us out late ordering a second round after dinner.  Adam’s beer was amazing as well; I don’t remember it’s name but it positively reeked of honey.

We shared a house-made pretzel to start,

DSC03357

which came with the best honey mustard I’ve ever tasted.  <– noticing a theme here??  I wouldn’t say that Berlyn is the best restaurant I’ve ever been to but many things on their menu were certainly the best ever in their categories.

Adam ordered pork schnitzel for his entrée so I decided to try two small dishes.

DSC03360

Potato pancakes that came topped with smoked trout and pickled cucumbers.

DSC03362

And fried Brussels sprouts with a pine nut aioli.

DSC03363

Best fried Brussels sprouts we’ve ever had and the aioli was seriously indescribably good.  Adam and I both were gasping at how yummy it was.

The dessert course didn’t sound quite as terrific to us so we headed over to Four & Twenty Blackbirds for the best espresso in Brooklyn.

DSC03366

And came home with slices of pie to eat in front of “Brooklyn 99.”

DSC03369

My salted honey slice was legit.

#2  Thistle Hill Tavern  <– from the owner of Talde and Pork Slope

I ordered a New Old Fashioned, which was made with Four Roses, Laird’s Applejack, maple bitters, lemon,  and brown sugar.

DSC03384

So good, though bourbon is always good.

I started with the Kale Taco Salad.  Kale dressed in salsa verde with cheddar, spicy pickled vegetables, and a fried tortilla.

DSC03387

This was the best kale salad I’ve ever eaten (<– I’ll stop now, promise!).

Dinner was the fish and chips with their famous salt and pepper fries.

DSC03393

I don’t know why I keep ordering fish and chips because I never eat much of the fried fish, but this was definitely the best version (sorry!) I’ve ever had.

Adam swooned his way through a slice of maple bourbon pumpkin pie,

DSC03394

but I held out for the best ice cream in the world, Ample Hills.

DSC03396

Good God.  “No Sleep till Pumpkin” = coffee ice cream with pumpkin gooey butter cake and underneath was “PB Gets Fluffy” = marshmallow ice cream with chocolate flakes and homemade peanut butter cookie dough.  Just fabulous.  Neither of us could believe how good the pumpkin coffee flavor was.

What is the best restaurant in your city?

Halloween Weekend Wrap-Up

Did everyone have a spooky weekend?  Or at least eat lots of candy?  I didn’t dress up this year and I didn’t manage to eat a single piece of candy, boo!  The whole weekend was pretty lame, frankly.  Saturday I spent hours holed up with a friend working on some continuing education credits.  And Sunday Adam and I were both a bit under the weather so we took advantage of the time change to catch some extra z’s.

Here were a few fun things…

Hallow’s Eats

Breakfast was on theme.  Coffee with chocolate soy milk, an apple, and a Clif Monster Chocolate Mint Z Bar.

DSC03285

The bar was so good, I need to find more of this flavor.

Dinner too.  A tasty bowl of leftovers.

DSC03289

Pasta with roasted broccoli, browned mushrooms, rock cheddar, fancy evoo, and turkey bacon (my new favorite kind, from Wellshire).

And I may not have eaten candy, but I did go to Snow Days for shaved ice.

DSC03287

Roasted black sesame ice with mochi and sweetened condensed milk.  It was amazing.  The ice is sliced into sheets rather than crushed and the texture is totally unique.

Say Cheese

When I was done with my work on Saturday, Adam and I drove up to Port Jeff for a dinner date at C’est Cheese.  We shared a beer sampler.

DSC03308DSC03313

And a cheese plate.

DSC03323DSC03330DSC03325DSC03329

Plus the Spanish Salad.

DSC03316

Field greens / Manchego / orange slices / red onion / black olives / honey tarragon vinaigrette.

Burgers With Bear

We did Sunday brunch at Bare Burger.  I got the Western – turkey burger, no bun, with turkey bacon instead of pork and maple horseradish mustard subbed for smokehouse sauce.

DSC03334

With giant bowls of froyo for dessert.

DSC03335

Dinner was Chipotle but I’ve promised to stop blogging about that!

Raw Review

Finally, a product review.  I was sent a free sample of Maui Brand Raws Turbinado and Whites Crystallized Natural Cane Sugar.

DSC03292DSC03297

I received these products free of charge but I was not provided with any additional compensation for this post.  All opinions are my own.

DSC03300

Available on Amazon and in some stores, their sugar cane is grown and processed on the Hawaiian island of Maui.  The sugars are non-GMO and vegan (<– not all granulated sugar is vegan).

I tried the sugars (which come in convenient 10 calorie to-go packages) in iced coffee,

DSC03302

and chocolate chip cookies,

DSC03340

and was quite pleased with their functional properties compared with regular sugar.  I’m a fan.
