Apple/Spice Month

We were trying to eat through some of our stores before I went grocery shopping this weekend so the past week we ate a lot of random foods from the back of the freezer and take-out. Somehow it worked out that everything was delicious! Highlights include…

First things first, it is Apple/Spice Month! Yes, I am already feverishly shopping for pumpkin beers too.

Peanut butter and jelly crispy waffle from Costa Nova + an iced latte.

Leftover olives from our dinner at Glasserie.

Local Cava Guava IPA which was basically beer champagne.

Adam and I are both 10/10, head over heels obsessed with these Swedish Swedish fish. We bought every flavor we could get our hands on at the store the other day.

We also lost it for these Ben & Jerry’s cinnamon bun cookie dough bites. We had their original cookie dough flavor when it first came out and were underwhelmed but these were outstanding.

Trader Joe’s Asian stir-fry veggies topped with scrambled eggs.

Boca Burgers with beautiful roasted purple potato and roasted broccoli with chili spice.

Chipotle nachos! Tortilla chips with cheese, chicken, roasted peppers, corn salsa, and guacamole.

Homemade okonomiyaki. Topped with Kewpie, Sriracha, and furikake.

Buffalo chicken pizza is good, but leftover buffalo chicken pizza topped with honey and Korean chili flake is even better.

Five highlights from this week include – – –

Arizona fruit snacks.  They have a really pleasant texture and no palm oil.  Does anyone else remember the terrible-in-a-wonderful-way pina colada bottled beverage Arizona used to sell?

IMG_3914

Speaking of throwbacks, here’s a cherry cola slurpie(!) push-up(!!).  Would recommend.

IMG_3919

Beer wins.  Triple dry-hopped IPA // key lime pie gose.

IMG_3898

Dinner inspired by chana masala.  Made with white beans instead of chickpeas and served on cauliflower rice.

IMG_3912

Dinner inspired by laarb and/or fried rice.  Ground turkey cooked with fish sauce, lime juice, brown sugar, Sriracha, and Korean chili flakes / with sauteed shallot, green onion, and Thai chili pepper / plus cilantro and mint / and roasted cauliflower rice / with eggs stir-fried in.

Woop, There It Is

Highlights from this weekend include – tons of coffee, tons of beer, tons of togetherness.  Webster spent all of Saturday kicking it in Brooklyn with us, which was amazing.

IMG_3850

Either Adam or I work the next several weekends so we tried to really maximize our fun date time!

Highlights…

We did a decadent car brunch picnic with take-out from Soul Brew in Huntington.  Woop, There It Is weekend special – chocolate pancakes with marshmallow cream.

IMG_3887

Scrambled egg burrito with potato, spinach, and smoked gouda.

IMG_3890

Chocolate peanut butter cup iced latte.

IMG_3881

Brooklyn Kolache Co is one of our favorite breakfast spots.

IMG_3854

I had pimento cheese and we split a chocolate peanut butter.  Plus an ube iced latte!

IMG_3849

Lavender toasted marshmallow iced latte from Pipeline Coffee.

IMG_3840

Frozen cortado from Better Read Then Dead.  <– the best thing I ate all weekend/month/year

IMG_3860

We were 10/10 excited to buy/try this Gushers yogurt but it was, unsurprisingly, not all that good to eat.

IMG_3839

Evil Twin Brewing is currently our favorite spot in the city/on earth.  Everything is inventive and delicious and they offer smaller tasting cups so you can try a lot of things.  Blackberry peach milkshake IPA // key lime pie milkshake IPA // gose brewed with soursop(!!) and sea salt.

IMG_3872

Triple dry hopped IPA // Triple IPA with marshmallow // a Saturn frozen cocktail – Dorthy Parker Gin, L’Orgeat, Velvet Falernum, passionfruit, Rockey’s Milk Punch, citrus, and edible glitter!

IMG_3869

Highly recommend this chicken, corn, and rice frozen meal, particularly topped with chili oil.

IMG_3833

(Distanced, outdoors) dinner at a Thai restaurant in Red Hook.  I had spicy duck salad.

IMG_3875

And a green papaya salad with salted eggs.

IMG_3878

Happy Monday!

Guava – Luxardo – Soursop

Highlights from this week include – easy frozen meals, my first time making (and eating!) carbonara, and cocktail walks with Adam and Webster…

Strawberry guava sour.

IMG_3791

Grimm (local) barrel-aged sour brewed with cashmere hops.

IMG_3794

Soursop daiquiris.

IMG_3774

This drink trio made a great team.

IMG_3758

Trader Joe’s frozen scallion pancakes with Kewpie, Sriracha, and furikake.

IMG_3766

Amy’s chile relleno frozen casserole.

IMG_3767

I made carbonara with turkey bacon and whole-wheat pasta and it was still 10/10 decadent!  With roasted baby eggplant.

IMG_3786

We had leftover egg whites from the pasta so I made scrambled eggs the next night.  With kale and Korean chili flakes.  Plus turkey bacon and buttered pumpernickel-rye toast.

IMG_3807

P.S. These chocolate-covered gummi bears were perfection!  The chocolate and the gummies were both amazing so the combo was even better.

IMG_3752

Lemon Meringue Pie

I worked (long days!) Friday, Saturday, Sunday but we still had a fun weekend with amazing date nights!  Five favorites were – –

Mekelburg’s rose black halva latte – an oat milk iced iced latte with rose halvah syrup, topped with rose petals and sesame seeds.

IMG_3730

Westbrook Brewings‘ lemon meringue pie gose might be even better than their key lime pie gose!

IMG_3734

Friday night we cuddled on the couch with nachos and ice cream and (re)watched “Love and Basketball” and it was kind of the best.  Chipotle nacho hack – order chips and a rice bowl without rice (this one had chicken, fajita veggies, corn salsa, and cheese (and guacamole on the side!)) and bake.

IMG_3725

We got three -epic – sandwiches from Mekelburg’s and had a picnic down by the water near Domino Park. Waygu roast beef for Adam / a bahn mi with Peking duck, duck rillettes, and sambal hoisin mayo for me / a Mekelburger with dry-aged beef, American cheese, grilled onions, fried onions, and tarragon mustard on Hawaiian bun to share.

IMG_3738

Chinese take-out to finish the weekend.  I got chili oil tofu with cabbage, celery and white rice.

IMG_3749

Summer Fruits And Veggies

It was a very good week in fruits and vegetables here!  We went to Whole Foods on Saturday to stock up.  With our new, pandemic-induced, bimonthly grocery schedule our first week of dinners/snacks always feels a lot fresher than the second week.

Highlights include…

Could Perfect Bars be any more perfect?  They are the optimal balance of sweet and savory.  I loved this trail mix flavor.

IMG_3374

My parents sent us a box of tamarinds and I found these strawberry cherries at Whole Foods.

IMG_3344

I also snagged a bag of genips (<– Caribbean fruit that I grew up picking from a tree near my house but have had an impossible time finding in New York) on the street corner near my hospital!

IMG_20200630_153811_864

Watermelon-themed things since it’s almost July 4th.  The winner of the bunch was definitely the Hal’s Seltzer.

IMG_3352

This dinner was brought to you by the color orange!  Salmon/trout salad bagel melts / local heirloom tomatoes with a bit of salt and pepper / roasted gold zucchini.

IMG_3367

We have been loving this black-eyed pea salad combo for almost a decade.  This batch was actually made with fancy heirloom yellow eyed beans since BEP were sold out at the store.  Beans, green pepper, smoked almonds, sharp cheddar, and green Tabasco.  It is such a simple combination but super satisfying.

IMG_3359

Roasted green zucchini topped with Moroccan tofu cubes and a simple yogurt sauce (plain skyr, mayo, olive oil, sumac, paprika, salt, and a little water).

IMG_3380

Our best meal of the week was this trio – baked tofu (cooked with a mix of soy sauce, rice vinegar, fish sauce, Sriracha, and honey) / Chinese smashed cucumber salad / fancy mushroom medley sauteed with salt, pepper, and butter.

IMG_3391

Bridge + Brigadeiro

Highlights from this week include…

Adam and I were both off on Tuesday and we had a great city/social-distancing date!  Walks across the Manhattan Bridge.

IMG_3266

IMG_3269

And take-out lunch in Seaport.  Brigadeiro iced latte from Cafe Patoro.  <– one of the best lattes I’ve had in awhile, even aside from the fact that the cup was slathered in Brazilian fudge sauce!

IMG_3274

And a kimchi scallion pancake sandwich from Vanessa’s Dumplings.

IMG_3278

My homemade dinners don’t look that exciting but were totally delicious.  A cheesy, crunchy, veggie-filled casserole with cauliflower rice / ground turkey sauteed with smoked paprika, sweet onion, and orange and yellow bell pepper / black beans / Trader Joe’s pineapple salsa / and a topping of buttery crushed tortilla chips and sharp cheddar.

IMG_3263

Ground turkey with gojuchang, Korean chili flakes, and green onion on a bed of roasted cabbage.  I went back and topped the whole thing generously with Kewpie and Sriracha and loved every bite.

IMG_3288

We made fantastic daiquiris this week!  Cruzan rum and soursop nectar with lime juice and sweetened condensed milk.

IMG_3257

Is it even summer in New York yet if you don’t eat an Italian ice?  I got toasted marshmallow with key lime and I’m pretty sure that’s going to be my combo for the rest of the summer.

Bubble, Bubble

There was no weekend post because I worked Friday, Saturday, Sunday and life felt a little hectic.  Things are definitely starting to ramp up at work (and that’s with some of my units closed due to Covid still!).  I have my eye on some fancy cocktails for this weekend.

Highlights from the past week…

My new favorite coffee combo – the Cafe Bustelo is perfectly extra-dark and roasty to pair with the sweetness of the condensed milk.

IMG_3172

My best snacks this week were bubble tea themed things and fruity beers.  Also ranch-flavored roasted chickpeas mixed with Trader Joe’s olive and herbed mixed nuts.  I eat five full handfuls straight from the bag, why do I bother to put it in that little bowl?!

IMG_3212

These brown sugar boba ice cream bars are truly the best frozen treat I’ve ever had!  If you spot them – buy them!

IMG_3155

IMG_3163

We also had some boba-inspired gummies.

IMG_3196

Guava gose brewed with coriander and Himalayan salt // pineapple shake IPA brewed with vanilla and lactose.

IMG_3188

Hazy IPA with hibiscus and dragon fruit.

IMG_3220

We made chilaquiles for dinner.  Topped with fried eggs, plain yogurt, cheddar, and Crystal hot sauce.

IMG_3184

Trader Joe’s cauliflower gnocchi with roasted baby tomatoes and garlic and gruyere smoked chicken sausages.
