IMG_9766

Highlights from the weekend included…

New coffees.  Shenandoah Joe was perfectly roasty.

IMG_20180707_093044_229

I got a nitro nom nom cold brew from Snowing in Space.

IMG_9777

And this can of cold brew was delicious (there’s skim milk in there too, it was frothy but not as much as the picture looks).

IMG_9727

Brunch at Maya.  I had a Hurricane with Cruzan rum in it!

IMG_9781

And a super Southern plate of chicken and waffles.  House-fried chicken thigh, caramelized onion and cheddar biscuit waffle, hot honey, and maple syrup.

IMG_9786

Snacks of note – Virginia peanuts.

IMG_9755

Voges caramel marshmallows with roasted walnut and pecan.

IMG_9762

Friday night we met up with my cousin for dinner and drinks.  I got a vegetarian chili and a mound of fried cheese curds at South Street Brewery.

IMG_9742

And a yummy flight at Three Notch’d including passion fruit and watermelon goses.

IMG_9749

Saturday night Adam and I tried out Citizen Burger.  More passion fruit, in a lackluster cider.

IMG_9768

I had a turkey burger topped with white onion, pickles, mayo, and pimento cheese.  Plus so many fries.

IMG_9772

Sunday night I finally cooked in our new kitchen!

IMG_9793

Homemade turkey burgers / on sweet potato buns / topped with ketchup and mayo / turkey bacon / and Kerrygold Dubliner cheddar.  Plus roasted green beans.

IMG_9801

Have a nice week!

Salads In C-Ville

We moved!  I officially live in Virginia now.

The move itself was kind of terrible but we made it here intact with the dog and most of our stuff so I really can’t complain.  And first we took a fabulous trip home to St. Thomas!  Complete with highlights of the best banana daiquiri on earth and salmon pattys eaten in the airport with a vodka soda and local beer.

IMG_20180625_111042_402

IMG_20180625_124303_143

Post-move, once the apartment was sort of set up, I focused on the really important stuff like finding all of the nearby beverage and dessert options.  Like La Flor Michoacana – a Mexican dessert place with the most exciting menu I’ve seen in my entire life.  I already had a scoop of soursop ice cream (with a scoop of mamey on the bottom)!

IMG_9704

And an eggnog paleta.

IMG_9717

Sweethaus for a quad iced latte and a crazy good salted caramel cupcake.  <– maybe the best frosting of my life.

IMG_9682

Grit for Cuban coffee.

IMG_9686

Also I loved this locally made fresh mint kombucha.

IMG_9692

On the food-food side I don’t have much to share because I’ve done zero cooking both due to being busy and having not moved any of our pots or pans.  We’ve mostly been eating junky take-out, and salads at home, and take-out salads.  Sweet baby lettuce blend / poppy seed dressing / strawberries / shredded chicken.

IMG_9699

Spring mix and herbs / Trader Joe’s sesame soy ginger vinaigrette / shredded chicken / roasted peanuts.

IMG_9712

From Fuzzy Taco – romaine / tomato / onion / fajita veggies / grilled fish / shredded cheese / tortilla strips / vinaigrette.

IMG_9723

From Roots Natural Kitchen – Arcadian mix / charred corn / pickled onion / roasted broccoli / hard-boiled egg / bbq tofu / cilantro lime dressing.

IMG_9670

Wish me luck exploring!

Brigadero, Beer, BBQ

I had a good New York weekend, one of a dwindling few remaining before the move!  Saturday, a girlfriend and I met near South Street Seaport for croissants, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, then spent the afternoon in Brooklyn for drinks and dinner.

IMG_9195

IMG_9200

Here were my top nine, three per day for a three day weekend…

{1}  Iced latte from Everyman Espresso.  I walked down from Penn Station to the Seaport and the iced beverage was sooo necessary.

IMG_9182

IMG_9177

{2}  It kind of makes me feel like an asshole, but the frozen coffee from Stew Leonard’s is one of my very favorite things.

IMG_9246

{3}  Croissants from Cafe Patoro.  Mine was stuffed with brigadero, aka condensed milk chocolate.

IMG_9191

{4}  Dessert bars from Hometown Bake Shop.  Key lime pie and s’mores.

IMG_9229

{5}  Cocktails at Grand Army.  The specialty drink menu is currently My Little Pony themed!!

IMG_9205

We decided I ordered the best two things on the menu.  Scootaloo – amburana cachaca, passionfruit, cardamom, lime, and orange.

IMG_9212

Pinky Pie – blanco tequila, escubac, aperol, lime, and salt.

IMG_9207

{6}  Pasta at Colonie.  Fazzoletti with blue crab, burrata, sorrel, and serrano chile.

IMG_9216

{7}  BBQ at Old Fields.  I had smoked chicken with smokey bbq sauce, pulled chicken, cole slaw, and a lot of Adam’s corn bread.

IMG_9241

{8}  I made a take on the creamy rice casserole from Eat, Live, Run.  Double the bell pepper, fire roasted ro-tel, and I swapped out shrimp for turkey sausage and red kidney beans.  It was delicious.  Topped with Sriracha and sour cream.

IMG_9260

{9}  Trader Joe’s sour grapefruit ale.

IMG_9252

Have a great week!

IMG_9187

Claro, Cake, Carrots

I worked Friday, Saturday, Sunday (and I keep working Monday, Tuesday!) but I ate enough sugar the last three days to keep me Energizer Bunny-ing through.

Highlights from a tasty weekend…

Birthday cake iced latte from Milk Bar.

IMG_9031

Trader Joe’s cold brew bottles are the 3rd best packaged cold coffees, beat only by Chameleon and Grady’s.

IMG_8985

Fresh alphonso mango.  In strawberry lingonberry yogurt with bran flakes cereal.

IMG_8980

Desserts from House of Inasal.  Halo halo with the best leche flan of my life.

IMG_9024

And ube tres leches!

IMG_9027

Ice cream from Van Leeuwen.  A vegan flavor that was terrible and a s’mores flavor that was my new favorite.

IMG_9020

Dinner at Sauvage // French food.

IMG_8994

Lemony marinated olives.

IMG_8999

Charred heirloom carrots with labne, pistachio, vadouvan, and pistou.

IMG_9002

We shared all the entrees with mushrooms.  Salmon with sorrel, shiitake mushrooms, lentils, and buttermilk sauce.

IMG_9007

Poulet au Vin Jaune with morels and fava beans.  I don’t eat chicken skin that often but it was by far the best component of this particular dinner!

IMG_9009

Dinner at Claro // Oaxacan food.  I had the housemade tepache (a fermented, sweetened pineapple beverage) with a shot of mezcal – they separated my cocktail for me so I could taste the tepache on its own.

IMG_9057

The menu was meant to be enjoyed family style so we ordered all of the things.  Too many things in fact, I wish they had stopped us one or two dishes earlier.  Asparagus and avocado tostado with queso freso, radish, and spring onion.

IMG_9062

Tacos with chipotle shrimp and quesillo cheese.

IMG_9065

Garnachas (like an open quesadilla) with rabbit and duck confit, pate, fermented vegetables, and cojita cheese.

IMG_9068

Memela (masa cakes) with wild mushrooms, espazote, goat cheese crema, and pasilla.

IMG_9073

Goat’s milk chocolate ice cream with goats milk caramel, peanuts, and toasted marshmallows.

IMG_9076

Happy Monday!

My New Favorite Thing

This weekend was all about fancy coffees, restaurant brunches, and yummy home-cooked dinners.

I took a vacation day on Friday – just for funsies – and had lunch with one of my favorite former co-workers and her new baby!  Plus I took myself on a long walk: Penn Station down to Chelsea Market, over to Gramercy Park, and back up to Penn Station.  Saturday I had a literal every cloud has a silver lining situation – the gloomy weather gave me an excuse to wear my snazzy new rain boots!

IMG_8885

Here were the highlights…

Fancy coffees –  Iced latte from Seven Point Espresso.

IMG_8849

Rose iced latte from Terremoto.  <– best coffee of the weekend

IMG_8836

Crack pie latte from Milk Bar.

IMG_8830

Restaurant brunches – MeMe’s Diner.

IMG_8857

IMG_8855

The O.C. = cara cara and blood orange, tequila, and Tang.

IMG_8862

I ordered the greens with chili oil and a fried chicken biscuit sandwich with spicy maple syrup and root vegetable slaw.  The picture does not do justice to just how gigantic that sandwich is.

IMG_8869

Cake!  I wish I had more photos because this cake is officially my new favorite thing I’ve ever eaten.  Vietnamese iced coffee cake with condensed milk frosting and cocoa cardamom fudge.  Moist cake, fluffy icing, perfectly balanced.

IMG_8877

Midwinter Kitchen.  I had a salad with pistachio crusted goat cheese, frisée, watercress, a sunny side up egg, and sherry vinaigrette.  Those goat cheese balls were out of this world.

IMG_8839

Home-cooked dinners –  Trout salad melts.  Trader Joe’s canned smoked trout with mayo and gojuchang on toast with sharp cheddar.  Plus roasted zucchini with sumac.

IMG_8906

And I had this killer drink line-up while I cooked – creamy mango soda and key lime pie gose.

IMG_8899

Eat Live Run’s green chile crock pot chicken.  I subbed in cauliflower rice to get some more veggies in there.

IMG_8847

Gojuchang turkey burgers on toast, smothered in a tasty sauce – kewpie mayonnaise, honey, dijon, and miso.  With a side of pear slices and chips – gojuchang kettle chips from Whole Foods and kettle popcorn chips from Trader Joe’s.

IMG_8893

Have a great work-week, guys!

Coffees And Cocktails

Important things first – the pink and purple trees in our complex are amazingly gorgeous.

IMG_8633

This is the immediate view out of our front door and it makes me smile every day.

IMG_8637

My purple hair finally got too patchy to be cute, while remaining highly pigmented in a few spots, and my hairdresser had to make me super blonde to get rid of it all.

IMG_8710

I had a fantastic weekend – including a Lower East Side day, a Williamsburg/Bushwick day, and a Long Island day – and we ate all the things!  I love New York, I love New York, I love New York.

IMG_8697

IMG_8747

IMG_8656

IMG_8641

We checked out OddFellows‘ new coffee and ice cream spot and I had an iced latte with toasted marshmallow milk.

IMG_8654

IMG_8649

I also had a toasted marshmallow iced latte (good, but not as good, obviously) from Sweetie Pies on Main while we walked around Cold Springs Harbor.

IMG_8753

Japanese shaved ice from The Little One.  Strawberry sauce / sweetened condensed milk / roasted strawberries / coconut whipped cream.

IMG_8684

Arcade games and drinks at Barcade.  <– one of my favorite spots in the city even if I’m not very good at Pac Man or Tapper

IMG_8712

IMG_8716

Craft cocktails on tap at Yours Sincerely.  Adam got a tasting flight and I had a Folsom Fizz with bourbon, cola syrup, and almond.

IMG_8722

IMG_8725

Snacks at Smorgasburg.  Belgian fries with malt vinegar aioli and chipotle ranch.

IMG_8701

Noodle bowls at Just for Fen.  Can JfF be my new living room?  The space was so cute!

IMG_8669

IMG_8665

IMG_8671

And the food was wonderful.  I had smashed cucumber salad and spicy chicken rice noodles with housemade chili oil, pickled radish and cabbage, baby bok choy, scallion, cilantro, and peanuts.

IMG_8679

Dinner at Forrest Point.  On the patio!

IMG_8736

IMG_8733

I had a fried chicken sandwich with jicima and blue cheese slaw.

IMG_8739

IMG_8742

The few things we ate at home were pretty great too.  Trader Joe’s scallion pancakes are the best frozen meal of all time.  Served with baby carrots and bell peppers.

IMG_8685

I made us delicious rice bowls.  Brown rice / red, yellow, and orange bell pepper sauteed with onion and garlic / chicken breast slow-cooked in the crockpot with salt, pepper, oregano, cumin, garlic, lime, and orange juice and then shredded and broiled until crispy / sharp cheddar / TJ’s tomatillo roasted yellow chili salsa.

IMG_8776

Plus mojito milkshakes!  Cruzan rum / homemade mint simple syrup / lime juice / vanilla ice cream / ice.

IMG_8765

Three Day Weekend

My three day weekend is actually a ten day weekend!  I took a week+ off from work because I am going home for Carnival.  By the time you read this post I will (hopefully!) be on a plane to St. Thomas.

Here were the top three from the past three days…

{1}  Coffee (coffee, coffee).

[a]  I am still loving Trader Joe’s shade grown espresso blend.

IMG_8509

[b]  I found my new spot for coffee and cookies – For Five Coffee.

IMG_8473

They served me an perfectly roasty and creamy quad iced latte.

IMG_8477

And they have crispy yet cakey cookies from Duchess Bakeshop, including unicorn cookies stuffed with cheesecake.

IMG_8482

{2}  Fun in packaged foods.

The chile rellano from Trader Joe’s is my all-time favorite frozen meal and the mojito kombucha was even better than expected.

IMG_8470

{3}  Our best meal of this year.

Glasserie in Greenpoint pretty much blew our minds.  Their deal is Middle Eastern flavors mixed with contemporary techniques in a stunningly gorgeous former glass factory.  We swooned over every bite!

Sour from Grimm.

IMG_8487

Griddle bread that was chewy and perfect and sort of reminded me of funnel cake.

IMG_8496

Roasted cauliflower with cured labneh and marjoram.

IMG_8489

An assortment of mushrooms with celeriac puree, hazelnuts, and a soft boiled egg.

IMG_8495

Chicken with roasted sunchokes, fried potato, and sesame.  I almost never order chicken in restaurants but this was one of the best proteins I’ve ever tasted.

IMG_8500

Rose milk custard with candied pistachios for dessert.  This was just a bit tangy and just a bit floral and totally delicious.

IMG_8503

10/10.

Pig Squared

Highlights from the weekend…

We went in to Manhattan early Saturday morning to check out the SNL line.  <– never going to happen, people had been camped out for at least 24 hours  On the plus side, we got to check out the leftover Easter decorations in Rockefeller Plaza.

IMG_8190

IMG_8198

IMG_8203

We spent the day with a Buffalo friend who is living in the city for a year for fellowship.  We took him to two of our favorite porcine named restaurants and on a long walk from Lower East Side to Tribeca and back.

IMG_8229

Pig Bleeker for lunch.  Smoked fried chicken sandwich with mayo, mustard sauce, hot sauce, and pickles, plus the crispiest fries.

IMG_8232

Pig and Khao for dinner.  I ordered the half hainanese duck, which came with duck fat fried rice which is apparently my favorite thing.

IMG_8242

We had birthday cake croissants at Union Fare.  Can sprinkle dust be a part of my everyday life?

IMG_8219

IMG_8216

We had a variety of cinematic favorite tributes this weekend.  90’s throwback snacks while we watched Empire Records on Rex Manning Day!

IMG_8247

And a Thackery Binx inspired Daiquiri Binx cocktail – apple cinnamon infused white rum, simple syrup, fresh lime, egg white.

IMG_8237

Eggcellent dinners using up our Easter leftovers.

IMG_8110

Egg salad – with mayo, dijon, smoked paprika, and red and yellow bell pepper.  Plus roasted broccoli.  We scooped the salad with Trader Joe’s honey butter potato chips which was pretty fantastic.

IMG_8181

Salad salad with a mango kombucha.

IMG_8254

Romaine / cilantro salad dressing / blue cheese / smoked almonds / fried tofu / hard-boiled eggs.

IMG_8257

Have a great week!
