Quick Trip To DC 2016

DSC03839

Part 2 of our vacation – a quick trip to DC/Maryland.  We had to squeeze it in between St. Thomas and time in the city so our visit was short but sweet.  We were drove to the District Tuesday morning and left to visit family in MD on Wednesday afternoon, but we still managed to fit in two museums, a long walk around Georgetown, and a visit with friends.  Plus of course we found time to celebrate May 4th, aka May the Fourth be with you!

13092410_230340274023608_1644572376_n

Our first sightseeing stop was the Museum of Natural History.  I love the human origins hall (did you know I strongly considered going back to school for anthropology instead of dietetics?) but the gems and minerals exhibit is always our favorite.  The stones all look like candy to me so I was very excited to buy some edible rock candy on our way out of the museum.

DSC03793

The next day we did the Renwick Gallery.  The Wonder exhibition was fantastic.  The instillations are stunning and incredibly moving.  My pictures can’t do it justice but artist Gabriel Dawe turned string into light!

DSC03849

DSC03851

My favorite was Maya Lin’s marble river.

DSC03863

It flowed around the room in a way that was just breathtaking.

I skipped taking photos of most of our eats so I only have the really exciting stuff {coffee and sugar!}  The Coffee Bar was our first stop after the drive in.

13129817_954890051294204_306336596_n

DSC03788

We went adventurous with an Americola – Americano with Mexican Coke – and the Honey Badger – cream, honey, and tons of espresso.

We also really enjoyed Compass Coffee.

DSC03835

I had a yummy mint cold brew and Adam’s cortado had some of the best espresso we’ve ever tasted.

Baked and Wired was an obvious stop in Georgetown, their funfetti cupcake is called the Uniporn.

DSC03865

DSC03874

We also tried the Texas Sheetcake, chocolate cinnamon cake with chocolate pecan frosting.

Dinner was one of the best parts of the trip.  One of my best friends (my maid of honor) lives in DC and travels a ton so it is always a big treat to get to spend time with her.  Her sister just opened a restaurant in Adams Morgan so we got to enjoy great food with our great company.  Real talk – Tail Up Goat easily makes the top three list for meals we’ve loved this year.

13126624_1009542302456151_508148351_n

I started by asking for the Hibiscus Agua Fresca with vodka in it because I’m a genius.

DSC03799

This was the first of several rounds of drinks so please excuse the fact that my pictures are pretty rough.  I promise the food was actually as lovely as it was delicious.

There were four of us at the table and we ate family-style so we ended up getting to try a lot of the menu.  Crispy salt cod with smoked cauliflower and pickled red onion.  It was fun to try a different iteration so close on the heels of our salt fish patty back home.

DSC03797

Brown rice bread with roasted carrot, blood orange, and hazelnut picada.  This was a great blend of textures.

DSC03802

“Potato salad” with trout roe, spring onion, and dill.  I hate real potato salad but I would happily eat roasted potato with charred onion, pumpkin seeds, and pops of roe anytime.

DSC03814

Adam wanted to order the asparagus the minute we sat down. Served with almond skordalia, cured egg yolk, and pecorino.  He came very close to licking the plate.

DSC03806

I was more excited about the carrot ravioli with ramp greens, pistachio breadcrumbs, and apricots.  The pasta was perfect.

DSC03809

We tried two of the entrees.  A stunning whole stuffed porgy with sunchokes, black walnut, and ramps.

DSC03815

And smoked hen of the woods mushroom with burnt bread sauce and chicken crisps.

DSC03821

This was my favorite dish of the night!  I’ve now had hen of the woods smoked and fried and I am obsessed with them.  Between the mushrooms and the burnt bread sauce this plate was perfectly umami.

We weren’t too stuffed for dessert.

DSC03826

almond cake with mascarpone and rhubarb jam.  Fyi – tepache is a sweetened and fermented pineapple beverage and budino is a type of Italian pudding.

A fantastic meal all-around and it was really neat to get to see another high-school classmate rocking it in the culinary world.

I soaked up family time in Baltimore and didn’t take a single picture.  Coming up – the last leg of vacation is time off in NYC.

Ocean 362 {Dinner In St. John}

St. Thomas has to be my favorite island because it’s where I was born, but during our trip home our absolute best meal was enjoyed in St. John.

One of the boys from my high school class grew up to be an amazingly cool chef who opened a restaurant in Cruz Bay.  Ocean 362 does modern takes on traditional Caribbean dishes using ingredients that are fresh, local, and sustainably sourced.  It’s a total 10/10.

The space is pretty and open and we got a seat on the patio with a progressively more beautiful view of the sunset.

DSC03715

DSC03739

DSC03741

The setting sun also means that my photos get progressively less lovely!

Adam and I went alone for a date night and ordered a truly ridiculous amount of food for two people.  We started with a local fish dip with citrus, herbs, and cream cheese, served topped with crispy capers, with radishes and crostini on the side.

DSC03722

DSC03727

We also had fresh bread with delightfully sweet butter and the chef sent out an assortment of pickles that were stunning.  The mushrooms were good and the dilled cucumbers were the best I’ve ever tasted.

DSC03728

Cocktails included the Bean-a-colada with pineapple and vanilla infused vodka and pineapple juice.  That dollop on the top is coconut milk and lime foam.

DSC03718

Plus a sparkly Seaplane with cava, orange bitters, and housemade hibiscus flower liquor.  The foam is thanks to vegan “egg” powder.  You can never go wrong ordering a cocktail with egg and especially not ordering one with hibiscus.

DSC03732

Adam said his pork tenderloin was scrumptious, but I’m sure it couldn’t have been better than my duck.  Cast iron seared duck breast / duck confit / buttermilk dumplings / maple glazed carrots / crispy brussels sprout leaves.  The dumplings were perfectly seasoned all the way through but the best bites were obviously confit.

DSC03736

We couldn’t choose so we got two desserts – torched brie with rum raisin conserve and a chocolate tart with a plantain crust, a passionfruit marshmallow, and dulce de leche.

DSC03746

We were swooning from the first bite to the last.  Plus we continued to gush about the meal while we rolled ourselves back down the hill to the ferry!

St. Thomas Carnival 2016

As I mentioned in my last post, I hadn’t been home for Carnival since college.  This was heartbreaking because the fantastic month-long April festivities were one of my favorite things about growing up in the Caribbean.  The timing finally worked out of this vacation, and the timing of the reprieves from the rain gave us the chance to hit my three favorite Carnival events – food fair, the village, and the adult parade.

DSC03573

Food Fair

Food fair is a mix of local produce, foods, and crafts.

DSC03536

DSC03529

DSC03547

DSC03544

Basically you steel yourself against beautifully ear-splitting steel pan music (did everyone appreciate that pun??) and eat yourself silly.

DSC03526

DSC03552

Our bite highlights included…

Soursop nectar!!!  Soursop – also known as guanabana; the flavor is a super creamy and reminiscent of a blend of strawberry and pineapple – is my favorite fruit and it practically impossible to find fresh in the continental US.

DSC03531

DSC03535

Pumpkin dumplings.

DSC03540

Salt fish patty.  <– pronounced like pâté, fried dough stuffed with any type of meat, usually beef, chicken, or cod.

DSC03550

We did not get fried fish or baked mac and cheese and I’m still kind of kicking myself for it.

Carnival Village

Village is a giant parking lot that gets transformed with food/drink booths and children’s rides and games.

DSC03555

DSC03567

DSC03569

You can buy snaps there and it is literally the funniest thing on earth to throw them at people’s feet.  <– says me, I’m not sure my parents or Adam would agree!

DSC03560

Our nighttimes were busy but we had to stop by in the afternoon because our friends’ vodka was available at one of the booths.

DSC03563

Tasty!

DSC03572

Adult Parade

The Carnival parades are just like any parade in the states except they’re a million times better.  Troupes decorate floats, wear snazzy costumes, and do insane dance routines down the street.  The music is blaring and wonderful and since we don’t have any open container laws there’s always a ton of liquor.

DSC03688

DSC03710

Fun fact #1 – when I was in Pony Club I did the children’s parade twice; one year I rode a horse but the first year I walked behind the horses and scooped poop.  <– yes, there are pictures, and no, I will never share them

Fun fact #2 – when I was a junior in high school I was in a troupe in the adult parade.  I did not let my absolute lack of rhythm hold me back.  We supposed to be some kind of bird (birds of paradise?) and we wore neon green bathing suits and I got second degree burns on the shoulders because I forgot to put sunscreen under my feathers.

{The Best} St. Thomas Visit 2016

DSC03757

DSC03758

DSC03762

Adam and I started our two-week vacation off right with an incredible visit home to see my parents and soak up some sun.  For the first time since college I managed to have the dates line up so that I could make it for Carnival*!  We also went to St. John*, The Baths*, the beach, and got to spend time with old friends.  It was pretty much the perfect trip.

* I took way too many pictures so all of the items starred above are going to have to be their own posts over the rest of the week

DSC03774

DSC03775

Speaking of too many pictures, I’m limiting this post to the highlights.  Here are some of our favorites from home…

The best hosts – my parents.  In addition to driving us all over the place, ironing my dresses, playing board games even though Adam always throws a fit, and just being generally amazing, they cooked us Adam’s favorite meal and my favorite dessert.  Bill Clinton’s Enchiladas.

DSC03653

And key lime pie.

DSC03655

Which meant there was leftover pie for me to eat on top of Greek yogurt.  <– the best thing ever

DSC03677

I always serve it with flax so it’s basically a health food.

The best breakfast – Barefoot Buddha.

DSC03663

I got an iced Vietnamese latte and the sandwich I ate on my wedding day, aka the Bigfood Bagel sandwich: egg frittata, smoked turkey, turkey bacon, cream cheese, sharp cheddar cheese, chipotle aioli, tomato-onion coulis, and fresh spinach.

The best brunch – The Grille Room at Mahogany Run. My (extra-spicy) Bloody Mary came topped with a stuffed olive, banana pepper, and shrimp!

13129432_641053512699135_2114858904_n

I also had a really top-notch chopped salad with shrimp and chipotle-ranch among other yummy things.  And then every singe person at the table ordered a vodka + soda and all was right with the world.

The best coffee – Bad Ass at Yacht Haven.

DSC03754

My triple non-fat iced latte was perfectly roasty good.

The best pizza – Island Time Pub.  Pro tip – start with a salad, they are gigantic and two-three people can share one.

DSC03672

Adam and I got a pie with artichoke, Kalamata olives, and roasted garlic.

DSC03674

Plus their drink menu is on point.

The best johnny cake – served at the window on the Waterfront by The Greenhouse, with cheese.

DSC03779

Caribbean johnny cake (versus the cornmeal version found in the American south) is slightly sweet, unleavened fried bread.  It is delicious in general and freaking mind-blowing when served with cheese.

DSC03666

Weekend Trip To Richmond

I had Friday off and I made the absolute most of it with a three-day trip to Virginia.  I drove to Maryland on Friday morning to meet up with my aunt, uncle, and cousin, and then we drove down to Richmond together to visit my other cousin and her friends for the weekend.  Our schedule included beautiful walks, copious booze, and delicious food.  I had a fantabulous time!

12977272_10206371712591366_3049821251409110000_o

DSC03357

DSC03359

I mostly snapped photos of coffee and booze, but we ate until we could pop.  These are a few of the can’tmiss spots we visited:

Black Hand is a locally operated coffee roaster and café.  I started both my mornings with an iced latte and loved them so much that I went back for a pound of beans before we left.

black hand coffee

Bistro Bobette for French cuisine.  We had scrumptious foie gras with mango and balsamic and I ate rainbow trout with string beans and brown butter that knocked my socks off.

My Noodle & Bar serves awesome cocktails and the best Thai food I’ve had outside of NYC.

Thai rum, strawberry jam, and local honey shaken with basil with a Thai chili, salt, and sugar rim.  <– ridiculous good

DSC03355

Drunken Noodles with yummy duck.  I forget to request “Thai spicy” and my dish was still tingly-good so you know I was impressed.

my noodle and bar

Social 52 had biscuits and grits galore and a varied beer (and cocktail) menu with the option of flights with five ounce pours.

Sour, coconut porter, cream ale, and local cider.  The coconut porter was one of the best beers I’ve ever had; the coconut and porter loves alike enjoyed it.

IMG_20160409_103319

Plus I did a pb&j – peanut butter porter and raspberry stout!

DSC03362

The Daily for – local, sustainably sourced – appetizers and cocktails.  My Bee’s Knees had gin, lemon, elderflower liquor, and vanilla-infused honey.  Perfectly balanced.

bees knees the daily

Bonus, sightseeing: be sure to check out the fun little shops in Carytown and the gorgeous grounds at the VA Museum of Fine Arts.

I’m Alive!

So it’s been awhile since my last post, huh?  My two-week illness (a cold and then the flu) turned into a three week plague extravaganza complete with conjunctivitis, gastroenteritis, and a two-day stay at the hospital.  Yippee.  I didn’t really feel like myself again until just a couple of days ago.

Now I’m back in action, and I even have a week’s worth of meals to share…

daytime eats

I was still recovering on Monday so I started my week off with mint sparkling water cut with Sprite.

DSC03126

I’m usually not a clear soda (or non-diet soda) fan but the day I got home from the hospital I swear it was the best thing I’ve ever tasted.  I didn’t even want diet coke that week, which says a lot about how sick I felt.

The real clue that I was basically dying is this – this small iced latte was my first cup of coffee in more than a week.

DSC03150

I also had a glass of kefir.

DSC03144

Maple was such a fun find.

By the next day I was fully ready for my lifeblood again.  Nonfat caramelized honey (<–yum) iced latte with extra espresso.  Sipped while grocery shopping.

DSC03165

I worked Saturday/Sunday which thankfully meant I had Wednesday off.

And yesterday I had a yummy Kevita kombucha.

DSC03195

Lavender melon.  Kevita is a little more refreshing – and less sour and yeasty – than other brands of kombucha.

Packed lunches were my old standbys.  Oatmeal.

DSC03131

Oats with chia seeds, strawberry shortcake m&m’s, and Justin’s chocolate hazelnut butter.  Plus a piñata apple on the side.

And yogurt bowls, with blueberries and blackberries. 2% Fage with maple pecan granola, chia seeds, and more pecans.

DSC03122

Vanilla bean with Heritage Flakes.

DSC03181

DSC03198

Plus truffles from a coworker for dessert.  With a side of Easter themed nails.

Wednesday at home I made an Easter-inspired spread.

DSC03175

Egg salad with potato chips, and warm carrot slaw (sautéed shredded carrots tossed with golden raisins, walnuts, mayo, and stone-ground mustard).

nighttime eats

Monday night I took the dog on an extra-long walk after work… and then laid down on the couch in my coat for more than an hour!  I was too tired to cook anything, but hungry enough to go back and reheat a second plate of leftover pizza.

DSC03140

Plus baby carrots.

DSC03206

We try to always keep them on hand because they are perfect for distracting the dog while he gets his nails clipped.

Tuesday I managed to cook dinner and try a blog product sample (two birds with one stone).  Popkoff’s sent me some free coupons for their new line “farm to freezer” frozen Russian dumplings.

DSC03157

The farmer’s cheese Pelmeni were fantastic – they cooked in under 10 minutes and were perfectly tender yet chewy.  Plus, you have to love the short ingredient list: “Farmer’s Cheese, Wheat Flour, Water, Egg, Sour Cream, Salt, Sugar.”  We kept things simple and tossed them with sautéed mushrooms and cabbage and low-fat sour cream.

DSC03163

Topped with a sprinkle of smoked paprika.  I have two more freebie coupons and I would purchase the dumplings with my own money so this is a meal you’ll likely see again.

Wednesday was the warmest of the season (68!) and we made the most of it by taking the dog on a long walk – in sandals and t-shirts – for water ice.  My strawberry and cola cup hit the spot.

12816820_1702917089922213_1699597833_n

Then we did fish taco night for dinner.  We need to make tacos more often, Adam and I were both raving about this meal.

DSC03188

Toasted taco shells / sautéed onions and bell pepper / shredded cheese / roasted tomatillo salsa / mahi mahi cubes sautéed with lime, cilantro, and green onions / dollops of sour cream.

Yesterday I ate a guava and cheese empanada on the train.

DSC03204

Dinner part deux was TJ’s frozen gnocchi with eggplant and zucchini.

DSC03208

DSC03212

10/10.  We relied a lot of frozen foods to get through this week but the quality of our meals didn’t suffer any.

I hope everyone is feeling well for the weekend!

Wonderful Weekend Walking Weather

Oh my gosh, thank you so much, New York, for the gorgeous weekend weather!  We took full advantage and fit a long walk into our fun on both Saturday and Sunday.

DSC02785

Daytime Eats

My new favorite ridiculous coffee.

DSC02700

Butterscotch latte with an extra shot.

Oatmeal bowl.  Rolled oats, chia seeds, freeze-dried blueberries, and toasted walnuts.

DSC02695

Topped with a chocolate coconut peanut butter packet.  The pb gets so gooey good on the hot oats.

Drinks in my carts while I did a giant shopping trip.

DSC02725

DSC02730

Green juice with spinach, kale, cucumber, and pineapple.

Sunday was our Brooklyn date.  We saw Deadpool (<– loved it!  loved that it was just funny, hilariously, and not sad at all) and took another long walk, including some exciting food stops.  Iced Vietnamese latte.

DSC02764

It was so warm out that I enjoyed my iced drink whilst walking along in only a tank top and cardigan!!

DSC02770

A “hot dog” at the Smorgasburg Industry City location.  Pan con queso is a grilled chunk of marinated white Latin cheese on a hot dog bun, topped with onions, cabbage, crushed potato chips, ketchup, mustard, and guasacaca (cilantro and parsley).  It was scrumptious.

DSC02763

Amazing, freshly-made cheese and potato pierogis at Baba’s.  These were out of this world, they had the best pierogi dough I’ve ever tasted.

DSC02772

And an ice cream cone to top it all off.

DSC02780

DSC02776

Ample Hills’ salted crack caramel (smoky caramel ice cream with hunks of crack candy) and It Came From Gowanus (salty dark chocolate ice cream with hazelnut crack candy, white chocolate pearls, and orange-scented brownies) in a cookie cone.

Nighttime Eats

I hit up my grocery’s deli for a quick meal on Adam’s overnight shift.

DSC02713

Tortellini salad and crunchy broccoli salad.

DSC02724

Plus lemon rosemary focaccia hummus with baked garlic pita chips and baby carrots.

DSC02720

Best store-bought hummus of all time.

A fancy dinner date at Upland.  We really enjoyed our meal here, the menu changes seasonally and we will definitely be back in the summer.

DSC02731

They brought us a potato bread loaf with chive and lemon zest butter.

DSC02738

And we started with the whole crispy hen of the woods mushroom, with cloumage cheese and meyer lemon.  This was fantastically meaty and loaded with umami.

DSC02745

Plus a greatcocktail, Bill Pay Buck – Tito’s, Aperol, ginger, and lime.  I think that I hate ginger in drinks but somehow this felt very balanced.

DSC02741

And I got the cioppino for my meal, clams, red shrimp, mussels, striped bass, jumbo lump crab, and gochujang.  I have been so brave with my seafood consumption lately, this was my first ever clam! (<– I hated it, but at least I tried)

DSC02746

My soup came with a thick slice of butter bread and I ordered a can of Genny Cream Ale that just felt right.

DSC02751

Dessert was the only part of the meal that didn’t blow us away.  Devil’s food cake, milk chocolate ganache, and hazelnut praline, sounded good in theory but was just meh.

DSC02753

But we ran into a Woop’s so we had our sugar fix covered.

DSC02756

Good timing too, we found it just before we crossed the bridge back to Queens.

Burger night to end the weekend.

DSC02792

TJ’s brioche rolls are wonderful.  We made our burgers with ground turkey, whole-wheat panko, eggs, spices, and browned shallots, cooked in a pan with evoo.  Topped with pickle slices, raw milk cheddar, and Sir Kensington’s special sauce.  So delicious we had to go back and split a second one!

DSC02798

With an easy salad of baby kale, pomegranate, pecans, chai seeds, and lavender salt / lavender honey / evoo / balsamic.

DSC02793

If the upcoming week is half as good as my dinner I’m in for a good time!

Raisins, Ramen, Ready For The Weekend

This week’s food themes were…

—Coffee

Always.  TJ’s cold brew (<– super strong and bold) with skim milk and vanilla almond milk.

DSC02660

Starbuck’s new smoked butterscotch latte is fantastic.  I’m a total sucker for any limited-edition release and a butterscotch fanatic in general.

DSC02665

Iced latte from Milk Bar that was unexpectedly the best latte I’ve had all year.  Usually I have to request an extra shot of espresso to feel like I’m having coffee with milk instead of milk with coffee, but this was perfect even untampered with.

DSC02673

The compost cookie didn’t suck either!

—Old-school turkey sandwiches

Old-school = white bread with cheese and mayo and mustard, i.e. super unhealthy with no redeeming nutrition qualities.  From the cafeteria with tons of pickles and banana peppers.

DSC02688

And at home on a raisin roll with carrots on the side.

DSC02691

Speaking of dehydrated grapes, I also had this raisin brown sugar Chobani.

DSC02654

The yogurt was meh, I don’t care for the texture of the oat line, but the mix-ins were great – yellow raisins, walnuts, chia seeds, and fresh blueberries.

—Ramen

I went out on two ramen dates this week, thankfully it’s been good weather for soup!  Chuko (<– my favorite ramen in the city) with work friends for veggie miso with a soft egg.

12728472_805389422904422_22593116_n

And Ramen Yebisu in Williamsburg with girlfriend.  I was adventurous and got the seafood special, with seafood broth, prawn, snow crab, mussel, scallop, scallion, and seaweed.

DSC02672

I was super brave (the scallops were a different variety than the diver scallops you usually see and we didn’t even know what they were until we tasted them) and it paid off in the form of a giant crab leg in the middle of my bowl.

One more day and then I’m free for weekend fun!
