Birthday Week

Today is my birthday!  Woo-hoo to getting another year older!!

We were supposed to be home in St. Thomas to celebrate so Adam and I have actually been on vacation staycation this week.  A tropical island is obviously always the preferred option but social-distancing fun in the best city isn’t a bad second choice.  We’ve taken several long walks, had lots of cuddling time with Webster, and watched a ton of Seinfeld and The Office.  Plus we’ve eaten so many good things!  If I was going to name ten of my top favorite foods I’d say Diet Cherry Coke Zero, vodka, espresso, sweetened condensed milk, soursop, nachos, cheeseburgers, ice cream, roasted green beans, and Pad See Ew and I’ve eaten all but three of those things in the past week.

IMG_3584

Highlights include…

A ton of yummy things from Win Son Bakery.  The standouts were the mochi doughnut and the Fan Tuan (rice roll) with egg and Chinese cruller.

IMG_3613

A fancy picnic (from Ellen’s) in our car at the end of the North Fork.

IMG_3596

We had a lobster roll and duck fried rice.

IMG_3600

Plus a local passionfruit IPA.

IMG_3603

Soursop ice creams.  I’ve been wanting to go to Taste of the Tropics for a decade and their soursop ice cream did not disappoint.

IMG_3577

I actually preferred Island Pops though.  Soursop + nutmeg.

IMG_3580

IPAs at Greenpoint Harbor Brewing.

IMG_3593

Tamarind + mango + tequila = our new all-time favorite homemade cocktail.

IMG_3606

East Wind Snack Shop makes our favorite dumplings in the city.  Dry-aged beef potstickers // Shanghai vegetable steamed dumplings with ginger scallion sauce // veggie noodles.

Happy birthday to me! 🙂

Soursop And Szechuan Peppers

Today is my 1st day back in at the hospital after a day off and a two-day stint of project days at home.  I had to recertify in ServSafe and I had a big task to work on (updating the Nutrition Department’s Clinical Practice Guidelines to be more current/evidence-based) so my boss let me work from home, which was lovely.   I got to leisurely brew Phin coffee and sip while I worked!  Plus I ate a million snacks.  <– Normally I sit in the ICUs and wear an N-95 for most of the day so I took full advantage of having a free face!

IMG_3505

Highlights included…

The company that makes the instant espresso we love for Dalgona coffees also makes a really good espresso roast.

IMG_3479

Plain Greek yogurt bowl with blackberries, peach, cashew butter, and a chopped up Bueno Bar.  <– I realize it is ridiculous to stir a candy bar into your lunch but this was breath-takingly good and I’m glad I did it!

IMG_3497

Vanilla skyr yogurt bowl with blackberries, black plum, cashew butter, coconut chips, and starry sprinkles.

IMG_3520

Adam and I had to go into Manhattan for a doctor’s appointment so we stopped by Bibble and Sip for a cream puff.  A cream puff topped with crème brûlée and filled with milk tea cream and boba!

20200714_180153

I snacked on nuts every day this week.  These sweet Thai chili almonds were a favorite.

IMG_3508

Still obsessed with Hal’s caffeinated cola seltzer.

IMG_3516

Adam and are both head over heels for these dinner mints.  We made it through 12 years of marriage before we realized we are both fans of these guys!

IMG_3485

This soursop ice cream was possibly the very best packaged ice cream I’ve ever tasted.

IMG_3481

I topped this cheese enchilada meal with more cheese, sour cream, and Crystal hot sauce and it was 10/10.  P.S. I highly recommend Amy’s frozen meal options, this one is good even if you aren’t over the top about it.

IMG_3511

There’s a newish poke place in our neighborhood that lets you add a thousand toppings.  This was white rice with crabcake, tofu, eel sauce, spicy mayo, cucumber, shiitakes, shredded carrot, string bean, green onion, tamago (shredded egg omelet), oshinko (pickled veggies), inari (tofu skin), garlic crisps, and lotus chips.

IMG_3488

Blistered green beans – sauteed with garlic, ginger, and chili oil – with Trader Joe’s mini chicken and cilantro wontons.

IMG_3525

Have a great – safe, distanced – weekend!

Summer Fruits And Veggies

It was a very good week in fruits and vegetables here!  We went to Whole Foods on Saturday to stock up.  With our new, pandemic-induced, bimonthly grocery schedule our first week of dinners/snacks always feels a lot fresher than the second week.

Highlights include…

Could Perfect Bars be any more perfect?  They are the optimal balance of sweet and savory.  I loved this trail mix flavor.

IMG_3374

My parents sent us a box of tamarinds and I found these strawberry cherries at Whole Foods.

IMG_3344

I also snagged a bag of genips (<– Caribbean fruit that I grew up picking from a tree near my house but have had an impossible time finding in New York) on the street corner near my hospital!

IMG_20200630_153811_864

Watermelon-themed things since it’s almost July 4th.  The winner of the bunch was definitely the Hal’s Seltzer.

IMG_3352

This dinner was brought to you by the color orange!  Salmon/trout salad bagel melts / local heirloom tomatoes with a bit of salt and pepper / roasted gold zucchini.

IMG_3367

We have been loving this black-eyed pea salad combo for almost a decade.  This batch was actually made with fancy heirloom yellow eyed beans since BEP were sold out at the store.  Beans, green pepper, smoked almonds, sharp cheddar, and green Tabasco.  It is such a simple combination but super satisfying.

IMG_3359

Roasted green zucchini topped with Moroccan tofu cubes and a simple yogurt sauce (plain skyr, mayo, olive oil, sumac, paprika, salt, and a little water).

IMG_3380

Our best meal of the week was this trio – baked tofu (cooked with a mix of soy sauce, rice vinegar, fish sauce, Sriracha, and honey) / Chinese smashed cucumber salad / fancy mushroom medley sauteed with salt, pepper, and butter.

IMG_3391

Sweet Polly, Sweetie Pies

Adam was on vacation this weekend and since we couldn’t travel anywhere we did all of the fun, social-distancing things in New York!  Highlights include…

Breakfast from Sweetie Pies on Main in Cold Springs Harbor.  We got a cookies and cream scone

IMG_3299

and a quad, non-fat, iced latte with toasted marshmallow syrup

IMG_3295

and ate while walking around and admiring the water.

IMG_3302

IMG_3307

Lunch from Lunch Lobster Roll in Montauk.  We got lobster rolls for take-out and ate near the beach.  They gave us so much lobster!

IMG_3337

Drinks from Sweet Polly in Park Slope.  The fact that social distancing rules have pretty much killed open container laws in NYC is a giant silver lining.  This pina colada was perfect for enjoying on a long stroll.

IMG_3331

IMG_20200627_182457_832

Dinner from Takumen in Long Island City.  We got take-out and ate on the water!!  <– best ambiance of the weekend

IMG_3317

IMG_3321

Hoji-cha bubble tea with oat milk.

IMG_3308

Karaage fried chicken.

IMG_3327

Ban ban chicken ramen for me.  Topped with chili oil and a soft-boiled egg.

It’s Easy Being Greenpoint

Non-food things I’ve been loving lately —

Seinfeld!  I obviously quite enjoyed it in the ’90’s as well but we’ve been doing a rewatch on Hulu.  I can’t tolerate any TV that isn’t light/funny lately so old sitcoms are perfect for me.

“Adore” by Amy Shark has been played at least once on every one of my runs recently.  I heard it on an episode of Schitt’s Creek, which I’m also completely obsessed with but had to stop watching in the middle because the final season isn’t out on Netflix yet.

Dave Chapelle’s new special, “8:46,” should be required reading for any white person who still isn’t clear on why the Black Lives Matter protests are happening/necessary.

We spent Sunday getting take-out and picnicing around Greenpoint and it was a perfect day.  I love everything about how the businesses in that neighborhood brand themselves, it’s such a delight just to walk around and admire stuff.

Edible highlights this weekend —

Quad shot iced Americano with skim milk from Maman.  Plus an absolutely divine double chocolate cookie with oat milk ganache.

IMG_3232

IMG_3235

Toasted coconut almonds.  I’ve been having a real love affair with nuts lately and these were a perfect blend of salty and sweet.

IMG_3223

Take-out cocktails and a cheeseburger from Elder Greene was obviously our best lunch of the year so far.

IMG_3239

IMG_3242

Plus we got cocktails from Ramona – frozen painkiller!! – for dessert.

IMG_3245

Our long-time favorite pizza spot recently reopened so we got a giant buffalo chicken pie.

IMG_3229

I made spicy salmon roll fries.  With Kewpie, Furikaki, Sriracha, rice vinegar, and smoked salmon.

IMG_3252

Kimchi In My Ramen And My Burger

Real Stuff — This was a hard weekend in the United States.  I don’t think my voice adds anything to the discussion but I do want to use my (small) platform share some posts with my white readers:  A Guide to White Privilege // How to be Actively Anti-Racist // 10 Steps to Non-Optical Allyship.

Fluff — Some highlights from the past few days…

IMG_2982

We took a social distancing walk across the Williamsburg Bridge to get take-out to eat in Thompkin’s Square Park and I must have said four-thousand times how much I love NYC.

IMG_2970

IMG_2976

IMG_2985

IMG_2972

Nowon was ridiculously fantastic.  I had charred broccoli with sesame caesar, perilla, anchovy, parmesan, and seaweed and a double cheeseburger with american cheese and kimchi mayo.

IMG_2980

Still loving making Phin coffee.

IMG_2997

This new Chobani chocolate oat milk is insane.  It tastes like chocolate marshmallows!

IMG_3005

This yogurt bowl tasted like summer.  Plain Greek, honey, cinnamon, and fresh mango.

IMG_3010

Chicken and kimchi ramen with brown sugar milk tea with boba.

IMG_3018

The best thing I ate all weekend = this taco.  Stuffed with Kewpie, Crystal hot sauce, and soft-scrambled eggs with gouda.

IMG_2994

On Top Of Spaghetti

Adam was home off of work all week (so much time together! swoon!) and I was off Monday for the holiday so we took a ten-mile social distance walk around Manhattan.  We were able to do it safely and it was so indescribably nice to see the city again!

Highlights from the homefront include…

Breakfast for dessert!  Sea salt caramel cold brew and a cookie dough Perfect Bar.

IMG_2941

Dessert for dessert; this week’s baked good was peanut butter cookies with vanilla bean powder and malted milk.

IMG_2957

I got take-out sushi for lunch on a work-from-home day which was fairly thrilling.

IMG_2952

Caramelized onion spaghetti – whole wheat spaghetti tossed with tons of caramelized sweet onions and green onions with fish sauce, brown sugar, butter, and Korean chili powder.  Topped with roasted zucchini, smoked rainbow trout, and pastrami-style smoked salmon.

IMG_2938

Buffalo chicken baked pasta with spaghetti, ground chicken cooked with hot sauce and cream cheese, tons of spinach, and chedddar.

IMG_2960

Back At It

Big news I’ve been waiting to share – I went back to work this week!  I finally found a job that is a good fit for my experience; I’ll be responsible for the ICUs at a hospital in Queens.  Great timing, right?!  I actually will be able to do some work-from-home days but this week I had to go into the hospital for training.

Food highlights from this week include…

This week’s coffee combo.

IMG_2385

I made Adam and myself dalgona coffees and he is smitten now too.

IMG_2388

Usually I don’t keep a ton of candy in the house but now that I’m unable to pop out for an ice cream whenever I wish I’ve started building up a stash.

IMG_2414

Amy’s chile relleno bowl with hot sauce.  <– my 2nd all-time-favorite frozen meal

IMG_2393

Trader Joe’s sriracha shrimp bowl with cashews on top.  <– my all-time-favorite frozen meal

IMG_2418

Brown sugar garlic chicken thighs / on a bed of roasted broccoli and green beans / topped with zhoug and Korean chili flakes.

IMG_2401

Egg casserole (very similar to this recipe) with tons of roasted broccoli and mozzarella.  Plus turkey breakfast sausage.

IMG_2407

We got take-out last night to celebrate the almost-end of my first work week.  Pizza loaded with vegetables – broccoli rabe, roasted zucchini, and olives – and garlic knots loaded with cheese.
