Deep Dish And Blue Berries

Biggest event from this week – I left the house to donate blood.  Guys, things in NYC are bleak.  If you are able to donate blood please consider it (we are facing a critical supply shortage because so many planned blood drives were canceled) and otherwise please stay home if you can!

Biggest culinary discoveries this week – 1) I love cinnamon in yogurt. 2) I love mint in smoothies.

Homebound food highlights this week include…

A tasty smoothie made with nectarine, grapes, blackberries, yogurt, honey, and fresh mint leaves.

IMG_2106

My favorite coffee (Grady’s) with my favorite coffee accouterment (sweetened condensed milk).

IMG_2052

Plain Greek yogurt with cinnamon, maple, blueberries, and cacao & cashew butter granola.

IMG_2060

Plain Greek yogurt with cinnamon, honey, TJ’s mixed nut butter, and granola.

IMG_2119

It feels weird to be obsessed with a low-calorie ice cream but this mocha fudge brownie flavor from Ben & Jerry’s moophoria line is kind of the best.  Especially topped with hot fudge!

IMG_2093

We are also very into these new peanut butter cup options from Theo.

IMG_2071

I made deep dish pizza with TJ’s dough (loosely based on this method) with turkey pepperoni.  Plus roasted veggies.

IMG_2099

I topped my leftovers with copious amounts of honey, Cholula, and chili flakes because the only benefit to eating all your meals at home is easy access to your condiments.

IMG_2111

TJ’s cauliflower gnocchi with pepperoni and pizza sauce.

IMG_2127

Leftover smoked salmon / roasted brussel sprouts with lemon zest, pepper, and parmesan / homemade garlic knots.

Coffee And Bagels (At Home)

Highlights from the “weekend” –

Coffee in all forms.

IMG_2015

IMG_2026

Egg and cheese bagels.  This one had soft scrambled eggs and a melty slice of sharp cheddar; on an onion bagel.

IMG_2034

This one had cheese, fried egg, and tons of Cholula.  Plus roasted broccoli.

IMG_1994

Leftover pizza with honey and chili flakes because that’s the only way I eat pizza now.

IMG_2017

Greek yogurt with cinnamon, maple syrup, blackberries, granola, and Trader Joe’s mixed nut butter.

IMG_2040

The best pasta I’ve ever made.  Whole wheat angel hair tossed with caramelized sweet onion and green with brown sugar, butter, fish sauce, and chili flakes.  Plus roasted zucchini and hot-smoked sockeye salmon.

IMG_2048

Sinfully good booze from Evil Twin – marshmallow hard cider and fruity marshmallow sour IPA.

Take-Out And Tuna Melts

What a horrible week in human history.  Suffice it to say I am feeling scared and sad for everyone.

There is no good way to segue between what’s happening in the world right now and “here’s some of what I ate this week” so… here’s some of what I ate this week:

Tons of no-contact take-out from local restaurants.  Kung fu tofu with Sichuan green beans.

IMG_1963

Cheese pizza with honey and gochugaru chili flakes.

IMG_1978

Absolutely ridiculous yogurt bowls.  This one was TJ’s plain skyr yogurt with fresh blackberries, TJ’s mixed nut butter, hot fudge sauce, and star sprinkles.

IMG_1973

One day I had yogurt with berries and cinnamon and grain-free granola but mostly I ate hot fudge sauce.  Did I mention we’ve also stress-eaten a ton of candy?

IMG_1984

Coffee that I brought back from my trip to Michigan.  I had to use the blog to look up the fact that my visit was in September 2019 because it feels like a million years ago at this point.

IMG_1954

The best tuna melt ever.  It was actually a mix of canned tuna and smoked trout (with mayo and pickle relish).  On an onion bagel with sharp cheddar.  Plus roasted caulilini baby cauliflower.

The Ratio Of The Pizza’s Circumference To Its Diameter

FYI – as of Saturday morning the recommendation in NYC was to avoid public transportation but continue to support local restaurants if you were feeling well, so that’s what we did this weekend.  Obviously the situation has changed vastly since then.  I stocked up on supplies last week and plan on self-quarantining for at least the next 14 days.

While you are stuck at home I strongly recommend streaming these (very raunchy, deeply funny) shows: Big Mouth / Future Man / Astronomy Club.

Highlights from the weekend include…

Breakfast at Win Son Bakery, which blew our freaking minds.  Their custard toast is our new all-time favorite thing.

IMG_1949

Pizza pie for Pi Day at Roberta’s.  Tomato, mozarella, caciocavella, parmigiano, oregano, and chili.

IMG_1943

Plus we had an amazing sticky bun.

IMG_1942

A dessert-y yogurt bowl.  Chobani milk and cookies yogurt with frozen berries, pumpkin seed butter, and sprinkles!

IMG_1921

All of the dessert-y beer options at Evil Twin.  Marshmallow triple IPA, marshmallow key lime sour IPA, marshmallow pina colada hard cider, passion fruit sour IPA, and cinnamon pear sour IPA (the marshmallow key lime was obviously my favorite beer of all time).

IMG_1928

IMG_1933

Homemade green curry.  With ground turkey and tons of spring onions, on a bed of roasted zucchini.

IMG_1916

I’ll miss you, NYC!

An Oatsome Good Time

Highlights from this week include – a day trip into Brooklyn // tons of tortilla chips and salsas // a product review.

IMG_1754

IMG_1761

Oatsome sent me a carton of their oat-milk to try {I was provided no additional compensation and all opinions shared are my own}.  I have a three pronged review –

  • 1) Taste: the flavor is similar to skim milk in that it is not strong at all; I could definitely identify that oats were involved but it wasn’t “oat forward.”  It was inoffensive in coffee and cereal which is basically what I’m looking for in my non-dairy milks.  I could not get it to foam for coffee, likely due to its low protein content.  Tastewise, Oatsome is definitely my new favorite non-dairy option.  Typically I won’t order at coffee shops that don’t stock skim milk but I would consider places with oat milk more regularly now.
  • 2) Nutrition: one cup of Oatsome contains 130 calories and 2 grams of protein.  It does not contain dairy, nuts, or added sugars and it is gluten free.  It’s a low sodium option with 60 mg per cup.  Oatsome is fortified with calcium (provides 20% DRI), vitamin D (provides 10% DRI), riboflavin (provides 40% DRI), and vitamin B12 (provides 40% DRI).  For vegans, it is awesome that this is fortified with B12.  However, for anyone who depends on dairy to help meet their daily protein needs at 2 grams per cup Oatsome probably isn’t the best choice (versus skim milk with 8 grams protein per cup).
  • 3) Environmental impact: oats require 80% less water to grow than almonds.

IMG_1775

I had Oatsome in a cup of espresso roast with brown sugar.

IMG_1779

And in a bowl of Heritage Flakes with blueberries.

IMG_1801

Vanilla bean Greek yogurt with blueberries and a honey tangerine.

IMG_1788

An egg sandwich from Golda with muhumarra, kashkaval, dill, sumac’d onion, and beef bacon.  Plus a salted tahini oat milk latte!

IMG_20200302_120425_033

Baby carrots and roasted broccoli dipped in Asian ginger dressing.

IMG_1767

Homemade chilaquiles.  We used yellow and orange bell pepper, serrano pepper, sweet onion, leftover salsa, and tortilla chips.  Topped with eggs, homemade cilantro crema, and Cholula.

IMG_1794

Nacho night.  Tortilla chips, black beans, poached chicken thighs, sauteed onion and poblano pepper, cheese, Trader Joe’s salsa, and sour cream.

IMG_1803

Tacos And Tahini

Highlights from this weekend…

Yogurt bowl with Heritage Flakes cereal, blueberries, and chocolate chunks.

IMG_1743

An afternoon in Bushwick.  Including stops at Millers and Makers for cake – vanilla and chocolate with coconut, caramel, and chocolate buttercream.

IMG_20200229_135637_106

And Taqueria Al Pastor for delicious tacos with chicken and nopales (cactus).

IMG_20200229_145450_772

Cups on cups.  My current favorite type of candy is nut/seed butter cups and these two types are great.  Sunbutter from Trader Joe’s.

IMG_1739

Vanilla tahini from Raaka.

IMG_1735

Our homemade dinner bowls were both eclectic and wonderful.  Roasted riced cauliflower with smoked paprika and sumac / chicken salad with chicken thighs, sour cream, caramelized onion and garlic, and fresh parsley / topped with Cholula.

IMG_1726

Roasted broccoli / sauteed corn and baby tomatoes / baked tofu (seasoned with smoked paprika, gochugaru, honey, and olive oil) / homemade salsa / sour cream.

LES = Let’s Eat Snacks

Adam and I spent both Saturday and Sunday walking around the Lower East Side eating all the things, admiring street art, and just generally having a fabulous time.  Plus we walked back and forth across the Williamsburg Bridge which is one of our favorite activities.

Weekend highlights include…

Smoothie time.  Beary flavored!  Banana, blueberry, blackberry, almond milk, and brown sugar.

IMG_1412

Brunch at Sonnyboy.  Bloody Mary.

IMG_1463

I got the harissa folded eggs with brussel sprouts, mushrooms, and basil.  I traded my avocado for a slice of Adam’s halloumi.

IMG_1466

Malaysian eats at Kopitam.  Bandung – condensed milk and rose syrup.

IMG_1434

Nasi Lemak – coconut rice, fried anchovies, cucumber, peanuts, and hard-boiled egg.

IMG_1437

Criss Cross ‘Shrooms – red chilies, wood ear mushrooms, and lotus.  These were actually a bit too spicy even for me, but I loved the fried basil.

IMG_1442

How exciting is this caffeinated cola flavored seltzer??!  It was basically diet Crystal Pepsi!

IMG_1424

Cookies at the newish Red Gate Bakery.  A caramel brownie and a housemade oreo.

IMG_1460

Ice & Vice always knocks it out of the park and their latest special is my new favorite thing – cream cheese soft-serve with guava white chocolate drizzle!

IMG_20200125_124130_287

A veggie-packed riff on my buffalo chicken baked pasta.  Spinach, riced cauliflower, whole-wheat pasta, ground chicken, cream cheese, honey habanero hot sauce, cheddar, and blue cheese.

IMG_1415

Have a great week!

A Bevy Of Beverages

My favorite bites this week were actually sips!  {I really want to make an “all about the beverages/Benjamins, baby” joke here but I’m holding myself back}

Highlights…

My new all-time-favorite coffee combo = Grady’s Cold Brew concentrate with the new Chobani sweet cream creamer.

IMG_1322

This week’s yogurt bowl combo was vanilla bean Greek yogurt with fresh blackberries and Trader Joe’s peanut butter with chia and flax.

IMG_1308

A girlfriend and I (and her baby!) met up in Nomad for lunch.  Salads at Made Nice – I had the frisee romaine with potato croutons, egg, and buttermilk vinaigrette.

IMG_20200122_120729_566

Ice cream at the new Milk Bar flagship – I had cornflake soft serve with fudge and sprinkles.

IMG_20200122_125336_493

New favorite kombucha is this juicy one with watermelon, hibiscus, and green tea.

IMG_1367

Milkshake IPAs (aka IPAs with lactose) are my favorite and this Gotta Get Up To Get Downstate guava one from Swiftwater is 10/10.

IMG_1369

I just discovered an amazing Asian grocery store near our apartment so we had some pretty great snacks this week.  Like numb and spicy hot pot chips.

IMG_1386

And yogurt gummies and passion fruit gummies.

IMG_1400

Easy dinner from the Trader Joe’s freezer section – meatless breakfast patties and cauliflower pancakes.  Plus roasted green beans and a dipping sauce made with honey habenero hot sauce.

IMG_1317

Chicken and waffle nachos!  Multigrain waffles, waffle flavored chicken bites, cheese, scallions, and a maple Cholula aioli.

IMG_1356

Have a great weekend!
