My Kingdom For A Coffee

Random things from the weekend…

We tried what felt like a million different coffees.  I have yet to find a local ready-made option that can keep up with Grady’s.  Iced Vietnamese latte from Cville Coffee.

IMG_0224

Iced latte from Grit.

IMG_0336

Ice latte from Feast.

IMG_0263

Muddy Waters was meh.

IMG_0219

But much improved with a large scoop of violet marshmallow ice cream!

IMG_0253

We had really good bagels at Bodo’s.  Everything with olive cream cheese.  They are made fresh all day long and the texture is perfection.

IMG_0268

And only ok doughnuts from Duck.  Strawberry glazed with rainbow sprinkles and marshmallow drizzle.  I did not like that they were served fresh – aka hot – because it ruined the frosting.

IMG_0333

I made a delicious vegetarian dinner.  Cauliflower rice roasted in the oven / baked extra-firm sprouted tofu / scallion peanut salsa loosely based on this recipe.

IMG_0324

I am incapable of having peanuts in the house and not eating five plus handfuls per day.

IMG_0313

We went back to Maya and loved it a 2nd time!  We had two fantastic appetizers: a local mushroom plate with Sharondale Farm mushrooms, pork belly (for Adam!) spring onion grit cake, buttermilk curd, sunflower seed and sundried tomato pesto, and lemon parsley aioli // pimento cheese fritters(!!!) with hot pepper jelly and chive sour cream.

IMG_0228

I had the crab cakes for dinner, with sweet corn and green tomato chow-chow, smoked onion aioli, and mache.  Plus sauteed broccoli and leafy greens.

IMG_0234

And we somehow also ate peanut butter fluff pie for dessert.

IMG_0240

How is it possibly already August this week??!

IMG_0259

Supermoon And Sprinkles

It was my birthday!

IMG_0163

The day itself was pretty ho-hum – I worked an extra-long day, it rained like crazy, the cupcake shop I planned on visiting closed early without warning – but it’s always nice to have survived another year!  And my pre-birthday trip to New York was pretty fabulous; I am glad I got my good weather then.

Highlights from the week…

Pathetically, I ate this strawberry Airhead as my birthday-day dessert.

IMG_0156

But later in the week we splurged on this $9 pint of marshmallow and violet ice cream.  <– best ice cream I’ve ever tasted, including the stuff I ate at a Jeni’s in Ohio last fall

IMG_0185

Lately in coffee, I’ve tried and been disappointed by several packaged options.

IMG_0190

IMG_0196

IMG_0146

At least I fulfilled my favorite birthday tradition – freebie Starbucks quad iced latte with sprinkles on top.

IMG_20180724_083120_379

I made a cocktail with this dream team –

IMG_0204

We got salad bowls at Chipotle with so much cheese on them it was almost too much, almost.

IMG_0151

My birthday dinner was our first – mightily successful – trip to Beer Run.  They’re kind of famous for their nachos.

IMG_0173

And I had a salmon bahn mi (with pickled strawberries!) that was pretty good.

IMG_0175

Plus a key lime brown sugar margarita and a key lime pie tart ale.

IMG_0170

Yesterday we slow-cooked a delicious dinner.  Brown sugar garlic chicken thighs.  I added smoked paprika, but otherwise followed the recipe.  With roasted broccoli with crock pot drippings and Sriracha.

IMG_0211

Less than 12 hours to the weekend!

A New York Weekend

We just had the best! weekend!! ever!!!  Or at least that’s what Adam and I told each other multiple times each day.  It’s my birthday tomorrow (the 24th) and he took me back to New York to celebrate.

20180721_132745

20180721_132737

We got super lucky with the weather and managed to do a million fun things, including try out a few new restaurants that we missed going to before the move, eat all the ice cream, and drink all the coffee (and put ice cream in our coffee!).

IMG_0106

Here were the highlights…

Staying in Williamsburg in the Pod hotel, which was adorable and totally big enough for us.  And they had games and a bar in the lobby with Grimm Icing on the Cake on tap.

Brunch at Fausto, our new favorite spot.  I had a cocktail with ontratto aperitif, aperitivo select, grapefruit, and tonic.  Polenta with braised duck, poached egg, and pea greens.  And hashbrowns with chili aioli.

IMG_0128

IMG_0132

IMG_0129

Quad, non-fat, iced lattes from Black Brick.

Aussie iced coffee from Sweatshop.  Basically a quad, non-fat, iced latte with a scoop of ice cream in it.

IMG_0124

West Side Story from Paper Plane Coffee = guava, sweetened condensed milk, and espresso.  It was surprisingly delicious, and pink!

IMG_0084

Running along the East River.

Lunch at Sauvage.  We split baked eggs and a salad with arugula, charred corn, pistachio, and whipped chevre.

IMG_0102

Smorgasburg!  We got fantastic okonomiyaki and a scoop of mint ice cream with toasted Swiss meringue on top.  <– my favorite iteration of marshmallow of all time

IMG_0071

IMG_20180721_122432_530

Ice cream at Milk Bar.  I got a babyquake (aka mini blizzard) with birthday cake truffles and the best sprinkles.

IMG_0110

Stocking up on Japanese goodies at Midoriya.

Buying an adorable bear t-shirt for me and a succulent pin for Adam at Brooklyn Flea.

Dinner at Dez.  We shared cauliflower and crispy capers and chimichurri and I had a chopped vegetable salad with roasted potato, crispy eggplant, a seven minute egg, umbah, zhough, and tahini.

IMG_20180721_190857_371

Beating our favorite team shooting game (Ghost Hunter) at Barcade.

Getting drinks with old friends at Freemans.

Beers at Greenpoint Brewery.

IMG_0087

Walking across the Williamsburg Bridge.

I love New York.

Bells, Poblanos, And Shishitos, Oh My

Highlights from this pepper-filled week…

Coffee coffee.

IMG_0040

I made bang bang shrimp with zucchini noodles loosely following this recipe.  I swapped in gojuchang and honey for sweet chili sauce and tossed the shrimp in some cornstarch to help give it a nice crust.

IMG_9994

Nacho night.  Kettle chips / shredded turkey breast / Camembert and cheddar cheese sauce / parsley // roasted green beans.

IMG_0004

Veggie bowls.  Sauteed red, orange, and yellow bell pepper with sweet onion and garlic / black beans sauteed with charred poblano pepper and cojita cheese / avocado / fried egg / sour cream and Cholula hot sauce.

IMG_0027

Cheese plate.  Grapes / Camembert and sharp cheddar / olives / tamari almonds / shishito peppers with sea salt, lime juice, and honey. <– I was so excited for this meal and it ended up not having enough protein being the least filling thing on earth and we both had to make sandwiches

IMG_0047

Local dessert love.  Cheesecake ice cream.

IMG_9984

Cupcakes from Sweethaus.  That middle one is cookie dough!

IMG_0022

We’re doing something fun this weekend…

Sour Cream Successes

Big life update – I have a job.  I joined a medical team for nutrition support (at the same hospital that Adam will be working at!).  It’s a fantastic learning opportunity but life has definitely been pretty crazy recently.  Actually, I interviewed for and was offered the position during my notice period at my last job, so things have been pretty crazy for the last month.  Also I started work the day after we moved.  Whew!

Big food updates – here were the highlights the past week…

Coffee combo = espresso from For Five with skim milk and ice.

IMG_9821

Rule Breaker Snacks sent me some cookie samples to try.  Their bean-based treats all have chickpeas as the first ingredient.  The concept is actually really neat, their snacks are all vegan, gluten-free, kosher, and peanut-free -as well as free from the top 8 allergens – so they are a great option for a kid’s lunchbox (or to pack to eat at a hospital!).

IMG_9809

The P’nutter chocolate chip blondie only got a 7/10 from us because the flavor that was similar to peanut but not actually peanut threw us a bit and we found there to be somewhat of a baking soda aftertaste.  If you were someone with a peanut allergy you definitely may feel differently though.

IMG_9849

But the birthday cake blondie was a 10/10!  Truly, rating it just as a cookie and not a “healthy” cookie, I loved it.  It just tasted like a really yummy sugar cookie.  The sprinkles were super fun and didn’t have a chalky taste.  And the texture of both bars was perfection – chewy without being crumbly.  You would have no idea that either flavor was bean-based.

IMG_9812

I get subsidized meals at the hospital cafeteria so I mostly will be eating lunches there and will have less to share on that front, though this week I did eat three (incredible!) lunches at my desk and was able to take a picture.  Salad with marinated mushrooms, chickpea salad, celery, grapes, and honey mustard dressing.

IMG_9853

Salad with mushrooms, salmon, banana peppers, and blue cheese dressing.

IMG_9866

Turkey burger with cheddar, blue cheese, red onion, and pickles.  Plus pita chips.

IMG_9902

We finally got ourselves some pans and to celebrate I made some reeeeeally good dinners.  Key note – I put Trader Joe’s low-fat sour cream in everything we ate this week and everything was fantastic so I think I will start keeping sour cream in stock more often.

IMG_9827

Esquites – loosely following this recipe – aka the best dish I’ve ever made.  I swapped serrano for jalopeno and used half mayo and half sour cream.

IMG_9844

With baked shrimp and cabbage.  I marinated the shrimp with evoo, paprika, cumin, lemon juice, and tomato paste and baked it on top of shredded cabbage.

IMG_9839

A hot take (<– that’s a pun!) on my black eyed pea salad.  Sauteed red, orange, yellow, and green bell pepper and green onions / salt, pepper, smoked paprika / BEP / turkey bacon / cubes of cheddar / mayo and sour cream / topped with Cholula.

IMG_9859

Stroganoff-ish turkey.  With tons of sauteed mushrooms and roasted heirloom cherry tomatoes.

IMG_9883

One night we had a tasty meal out at Mono Loco.  Fresh grapefruit mojito with Cruzan rum!

IMG_9906

And I got nachos with pinto beans and crazy good roasted chicken.

IMG_9908

Snack highlights this week were ice cream!  Whole Food’s vegan peanut butter chocolate bar(!!) topped with cardamom ice cream and strawberry sprinkles.

IMG_9894

Scoops of tres leches and cream cheese from La Flor Michoacana.

IMG_9826

Have a great weekend!

Salads In C-Ville

We moved!  I officially live in Virginia now.

The move itself was kind of terrible but we made it here intact with the dog and most of our stuff so I really can’t complain.  And first we took a fabulous trip home to St. Thomas!  Complete with highlights of the best banana daiquiri on earth and salmon pattys eaten in the airport with a vodka soda and local beer.

IMG_20180625_111042_402

IMG_20180625_124303_143

Post-move, once the apartment was sort of set up, I focused on the really important stuff like finding all of the nearby beverage and dessert options.  Like La Flor Michoacana – a Mexican dessert place with the most exciting menu I’ve seen in my entire life.  I already had a scoop of soursop ice cream (with a scoop of mamey on the bottom)!

IMG_9704

And an eggnog paleta.

IMG_9717

Sweethaus for a quad iced latte and a crazy good salted caramel cupcake.  <– maybe the best frosting of my life.

IMG_9682

Grit for Cuban coffee.

IMG_9686

Also I loved this locally made fresh mint kombucha.

IMG_9692

On the food-food side I don’t have much to share because I’ve done zero cooking both due to being busy and having not moved any of our pots or pans.  We’ve mostly been eating junky take-out, and salads at home, and take-out salads.  Sweet baby lettuce blend / poppy seed dressing / strawberries / shredded chicken.

IMG_9699

Spring mix and herbs / Trader Joe’s sesame soy ginger vinaigrette / shredded chicken / roasted peanuts.

IMG_9712

From Fuzzy Taco – romaine / tomato / onion / fajita veggies / grilled fish / shredded cheese / tortilla strips / vinaigrette.

IMG_9723

From Roots Natural Kitchen – Arcadian mix / charred corn / pickled onion / roasted broccoli / hard-boiled egg / bbq tofu / cilantro lime dressing.

IMG_9670

Wish me luck exploring!

Coffee, Fried Chicken, And Ice Cream

So many things have been happening since I last posted, which is funny because life is going to be a a billion times busier the next few weeks.

My last day of work was wonderful.  I did end up doing patient care up to the very end – updating some enteral feeds for fluid restrictions, completing a palliative consult, troubleshooting a feeding tube that kept clogging.  My coworkers continued to be the sweetest and one of my friends even walked me to the door at the end of the day!  Then I met up with a friend from Buffalo for a final round of after-work drinks at Grand Army, which was perfect.

My parents were in town for the weekend and we had a great time doing fun city things with them. Plus we took a friend on a final foodie tour of the Lower East Side.

Adam “graduated” from residency and our families spent an afternoon celebrating what a smart, motivated, bad ass he is.

IMG_20180619_113641_872

And today I am on my way home to St. Thomas for a short vacation before the move.  Related update – we planned things out in a sort of ridiculous way and the moving process is going to be completely insane.  This will be the last time you’ll hear from me for a week or two because I’m not even going to attempt blogging while we try to get everything else done.

Before “good bye, for now,” the weekend eats highlights! Flavor themes were coffee, fried chicken, and ice cream…

Iced latte from Black Brick.

IMG_9572

Iced latte from Brooklyn Roasting Co.

IMG_9610

Rose milk tea with *baby boba* from Pa Tea.

IMG_9574

Scoops from Ice & Vice. Soursop pina colada and lemon poppyseed.

IMG_9584

Sprinkles and strawberry jam ice creams from Odd Fellows.

IMG_9642

I made tres leches cake for the party.

IMG_9652

A final round of spiceland bao (and fried fish!) from Baohaus.

IMG_9580

Dinner at Sundays in Brooklyn. I had a spicy grapefruit cocktail.

IMG_9626

And spicy togarashi fried chicken.

IMG_9638

Plus we shared a ton of delicious appetizers. Freshmade sourdough bread and beer butter plus Alpine cheese with kumquat jam. Black lentil dip with edible flowers and cultured buttermilk and flatbread. Crispy maitake mushrooms.

Last Day

Holy frick.  It’s my last day of work today!!

It’s been a weird last week – I’ve actually been crazy busy because a coworker is out sick so I’ve been covering additional units.  Usually you don’t do much patient care on your final day, but I’m planning on squeezing in a pretty full morning before I start my exit paperwork.  Plus I’ve been wrapping up various projects, including an hour-long presentation on critical care nutrition guidelines that I gave to the residents covering the ICUs.

It’d be nice to have some time to decompress but the last two weeks of June are going to be insane with the move.  And in busy-ness that is fun, my parents are coming into town tomorrow for a final city visit.  And then Adam’s family is joining us to celebrate his graduation next week!

Busy, busy, busy, busy, busy!  <– name that movie

Here were the highlights from my last week of work…

{fun in bottled coffee}  Cold brew from Trader Joe’s.

IMG_9507

Pecan cold brew from Chameleon Coffee.

IMG_9549

{fruit forward snacks}  Fresh watermelon chunks with TJ’s cucumber watermelon mint Greek yogurt.

IMG_9536

The last of the ambrosia my coworker made me.  I for sure ate out every single piece of palm seed.

IMG_9529

{vegetables masquerading as chips/fries}  Roasted green bean “cheese fries” with ketchup and mayo.  I’ll be honest, I wanted Kewpie mayo for years and finally bought a bottle the month before this move and now I’m looking for any excuse, no matter how flimsy, to use it.

IMG_9533

Spinach and parmesan tzatziki dip scooped with sugar snap peas and baby carrots.

IMG_9546

{good foods and goodbyes with coworkers}  An after-work walk to DeKalb Market Hall for Ample Hills.  Baby I was Churned This Way.

IMG_20180612_163604_299

Lunch at Bolivian Llama Party in the Ashland.  I had a fried seitan sandwich and we split insanely good cilantro cheese fries.

IMG_20180614_122853_104

{New York must-eats}  A poppy seed bagel with jalapeno-cheddar cream cheese from La Bagel Delight.  <– eaten on the walk to work, key feature

IMG_9511

Shaved ice from Grace Street.  We swooned over black sesame ice with sweetened condensed milk, honey boba, and mochi.  <– all-time best boba and mochi in the city/world

IMG_9550

Hand-pulled noodles from Xi’an Famous Foods.  Extra spicy for me, with smashed cucumber salad.  The chew factor here is just perfection.

IMG_9556

I ♥ New York.
