Take Me Out

This weekend we: Ate all the take-out.  Took the dog on several long walks.  Washed the dog and turned him into an adorable woolly mammoth.  Did our grocery shopping for the next two weeks.

I also went on a really great run and started re-watching America’s Next Top Model.

Highlights include…

Obsessed with these Trader Joe’s bbq popped chips.  I prefer a smoky bbq flavor and this fits the bill.

IMG_2824

Even more obsessed with this Evil Twin pink pineapple IPA.  Served in a go-cup because we took a cocktail hour walk with Webster that knocked our socks off.

IMG_2828

We got great take-out from a local Mediterranean spot.  Tons of pita bread with all of the smokey eggplant dips.  Plus bulgar with tzatziki and chicken (plus roasted broccoli).

IMG_2843

And we ordered all of their desserts!

IMG_2834

We also got great take-out from a local Szechuan spot.  I had kung pow tofu with veggie rice noodles and Chinese cabbage with peppers.

Back At It

Big news I’ve been waiting to share – I went back to work this week!  I finally found a job that is a good fit for my experience; I’ll be responsible for the ICUs at a hospital in Queens.  Great timing, right?!  I actually will be able to do some work-from-home days but this week I had to go into the hospital for training.

Food highlights from this week include…

This week’s coffee combo.

IMG_2385

I made Adam and myself dalgona coffees and he is smitten now too.

IMG_2388

Usually I don’t keep a ton of candy in the house but now that I’m unable to pop out for an ice cream whenever I wish I’ve started building up a stash.

IMG_2414

Amy’s chile relleno bowl with hot sauce.  <– my 2nd all-time-favorite frozen meal

IMG_2393

Trader Joe’s sriracha shrimp bowl with cashews on top.  <– my all-time-favorite frozen meal

IMG_2418

Brown sugar garlic chicken thighs / on a bed of roasted broccoli and green beans / topped with zhoug and Korean chili flakes.

IMG_2401

Egg casserole (very similar to this recipe) with tons of roasted broccoli and mozzarella.  Plus turkey breakfast sausage.

IMG_2407

We got take-out last night to celebrate the almost-end of my first work week.  Pizza loaded with vegetables – broccoli rabe, roasted zucchini, and olives – and garlic knots loaded with cheese.

Virtual Road Trip

One silver lining to not getting to see any of my friends in person for the discernible future is that we’ve been doing a better job of connecting long-distance.  I spent hours on the phone with a childhood friend the other day and Sunday morning my cousin and I took an online yoga class together.  <– super fun fact? The yoga class was actually being taught by another one of my childhood friends!  Plus, I know that I am insanely lucky to be in such a good marriage, I’m at home with my favorite person on earth.

This weekend we took a trip to Virginia in the form of some of our our favorite drinks.  Coffee from Black Hand.

IMG_2131

Rum from Vitae.  With cinnamon coke and lime!

IMG_2142

We’ve been drinking a lot of fancy packaged coffees to help me deal with my withdrawal from coffee shop quad iced lattes.

IMG_2161

IMG_2164

I used the last of my fresh berries in this yogurt bowl.  Plain Greek with maple, cinnamon, and TJ’s mixed nut butter.

IMG_2171

Delivery successes.  Bubble tea.

IMG_2195

Tons of Mexican food.

IMG_2191

Menemen, loosely based on this recipe.  I used sumac, chili flakes, pepper, smoked paprika, and fresno chilis.  Plus TJ’s rose fingerling potato chips, which were crazy addictive, I went back for thirds.

IMG_2149

TJ’s vegan orange chicken served on a big bed of green beans in gojuchang.

Take-Out And Tuna Melts

What a horrible week in human history.  Suffice it to say I am feeling scared and sad for everyone.

There is no good way to segue between what’s happening in the world right now and “here’s some of what I ate this week” so… here’s some of what I ate this week:

Tons of no-contact take-out from local restaurants.  Kung fu tofu with Sichuan green beans.

IMG_1963

Cheese pizza with honey and gochugaru chili flakes.

IMG_1978

Absolutely ridiculous yogurt bowls.  This one was TJ’s plain skyr yogurt with fresh blackberries, TJ’s mixed nut butter, hot fudge sauce, and star sprinkles.

IMG_1973

One day I had yogurt with berries and cinnamon and grain-free granola but mostly I ate hot fudge sauce.  Did I mention we’ve also stress-eaten a ton of candy?

IMG_1984

Coffee that I brought back from my trip to Michigan.  I had to use the blog to look up the fact that my visit was in September 2019 because it feels like a million years ago at this point.

IMG_1954

The best tuna melt ever.  It was actually a mix of canned tuna and smoked trout (with mayo and pickle relish).  On an onion bagel with sharp cheddar.  Plus roasted caulilini baby cauliflower.

IMG_1991

The Ratio Of The Pizza’s Circumference To Its Diameter

FYI – as of Saturday morning the recommendation in NYC was to avoid public transportation but continue to support local restaurants if you were feeling well, so that’s what we did this weekend.  Obviously the situation has changed vastly since then.  I stocked up on supplies last week and plan on self-quarantining for at least the next 14 days.

While you are stuck at home I strongly recommend streaming these (very raunchy, deeply funny) shows: Big Mouth / Future Man / Astronomy Club.

Highlights from the weekend include…

Breakfast at Win Son Bakery, which blew our freaking minds.  Their custard toast is our new all-time favorite thing.

IMG_1949

Pizza pie for Pi Day at Roberta’s.  Tomato, mozarella, caciocavella, parmigiano, oregano, and chili.

IMG_1943

Plus we had an amazing sticky bun.

IMG_1942

A dessert-y yogurt bowl.  Chobani milk and cookies yogurt with frozen berries, pumpkin seed butter, and sprinkles!

IMG_1921

All of the dessert-y beer options at Evil Twin.  Marshmallow triple IPA, marshmallow key lime sour IPA, marshmallow pina colada hard cider, passion fruit sour IPA, and cinnamon pear sour IPA (the marshmallow key lime was obviously my favorite beer of all time).

IMG_1928

IMG_1933

Homemade green curry.  With ground turkey and tons of spring onions, on a bed of roasted zucchini.

IMG_1916

I’ll miss you, NYC!

IMG_1940

IMG_1946

Aha!

Highlights from this week (mostly beverages that blew my mind!) include…

Starbucks vanilla sweet cream nitro cold brew can gets a 7.5/10.  Not as good as a freshly made nitro but better than many canned coffees.

IMG_1854

Wendy’s new cold brew with chocolate Frosty creamer gets a 7/10; a great score for a fast food coffee.  It was not too sweet and the coffee was vastly more robust than Dunkin Donuts’.

IMG_1865

I always enjoy Health Ade Kombucha and their passion fruit tangerine flavor is my new 2nd favorite (it comes in behind their holiday spice flavor).

IMG_1838

AHA = my new favorite sparkling water.  This was the surprisingly fantastic flavor combo of cherry and coffee!  And it’s caffeinated!!

IMG_1849

A decked out yogurt bowl.  With vanilla bean powder, cinnamon, honey, banana, watermelon seed butter, and starry sprinkles.

IMG_1907

My favorite yogurt (Trader Joe’s plain skyr) with my new favorite oatmeal cookies (Stella’s easy one bowl recipe) and some mandarinquats (which I actually didn’t enjoy because they were impossible to eat).

IMG_1886

Crazy good take-out from Cheng Du.  I got kung pow tofu and Szechuan chili oil tofu and it was some of the best Chinese food I’ve ever tasted.

IMG_1874

This was hands-down the best sandwich I’ve ever made.  I could not stop raving out it.

IMG_1898

Brioche bun with Kewpie mayo / chicken thighs marinated in pineapple juice, brown sugar, sriracha, minced ginger, soy sauce, and rice vinegar then roasted / bbq sauce made with the reduced marinade plus ketchup / topped with sauteed sweet onion, poblano pepper, and pineapple.  Served with roasted broccoli.

IMG_1887

Tacos And Tahini

Highlights from this weekend…

Yogurt bowl with Heritage Flakes cereal, blueberries, and chocolate chunks.

IMG_1743

An afternoon in Bushwick.  Including stops at Millers and Makers for cake – vanilla and chocolate with coconut, caramel, and chocolate buttercream.

IMG_20200229_135637_106

And Taqueria Al Pastor for delicious tacos with chicken and nopales (cactus).

IMG_20200229_145450_772

Cups on cups.  My current favorite type of candy is nut/seed butter cups and these two types are great.  Sunbutter from Trader Joe’s.

IMG_1739

Vanilla tahini from Raaka.

IMG_1735

Our homemade dinner bowls were both eclectic and wonderful.  Roasted riced cauliflower with smoked paprika and sumac / chicken salad with chicken thighs, sour cream, caramelized onion and garlic, and fresh parsley / topped with Cholula.

IMG_1726

Roasted broccoli / sauteed corn and baby tomatoes / baked tofu (seasoned with smoked paprika, gochugaru, honey, and olive oil) / homemade salsa / sour cream.

See Food Diet

Two key housekeeping things –

1) I recently kind of randomly started eating sashimi and burgers and I am now obsessed with both.  Also, apparently I’m into cake at the moment.

2) I had an absolutely fantastic time in St. Thomas!  I spent two weeks hanging out with my grandma and swimming in the ocean!

IMG_20200217_130023_241

Thankfully the weather in NYC has been nice enough for us to do a ton of walking (and a ton of cake, coffee, and fancy cocktail consuming!) so the transition has been pretty easy.

Recent highlights include…

Rum raisin iced latte at the Ace Hotel.  Related – I had a rose cold brew at Brooklyn Roasting Co that was mindblowing.

IMG_1623

I am definitely a fan of these new KIND nut butter bars whose product info is weirdly not on their website.

IMG_1610

Brunch at the Fulton in the Seaport District.  I had a smoked bloody mary margarita!

IMG_1670

We shared sashimi with spicy white ponzu.

IMG_1671

And brussel sprouts with mint and pecorino cheese.

IMG_1674

And I had the gruyere cheeseburger with au jus.

IMG_1676

Now that I’m into sushi, a girlfriend suggested we get lunch at Sugarfish.  I got the “Trust Me Lite” which included edamame and tuna sashimi.

IMG_20200221_131443_276

Albacore, salmon, and shrimp sushi.

IMG_20200221_131443_277

And a toro hand roll.

IMG_20200221_131443_282

Adam and I had a giant, epic lunch at Fan Fried Rice Bar in Bed Stuy.  Golden kimchi / cucumber salad / mush-mame fried rice with shiitake mushrooms, edamame, mixed vegetables, and fried shallots.

IMG_1643

Big Gay Ice Cream is my current favorite.  This was yellow cake soft-serve with dulce de leche and rainbow sprinkles in a biscoff lined cone.

IMG_1679

Dreamy cake slices – strawberry Good Humor bar and Oreo – at Little Cupcake Bakeshop.

IMG_1648

Brigadero cake and a cappuccino at Padoca Bakery.

IMG_1666

Leyenda‘s Candy Striper is a frozen blend of Leblon cachaça, coconut, vanilla, maple, lime, peppermint, and cardamom and it is the single best beverage I have ever put in my mouth.  Every sip was so interesting!

IMG_1655

Dinner at the Hi Hi Room.  We started with smashed potatoes with an herb aioli.

IMG_1661

Other Half Cream Get the Honey IPA.  <– IPAs brewed with lactose are my favorite

IMG_1656

Our reason for being there = hand-cut spaghetti with duck chili, cheddar, and white onion.  I couldn’t get a good photo but it was truly fantastic.

IMG_1664

Our apartment complex lost power for several hours on Friday night and we were forced to go out to a super fun dinner on the Upper East Side.  A friend sent me a list of “the best cocktail spots in NYC” and NR definitely earned its spot!

IMG_1639

Our favorites were the Japanese whiskey sour (above) with brown sugar, yuzu, and egg white and the Pistachio – dry gin, house-made pistachio cream, campari, and clementine!

IMG_1630

We also shared a truffle oil egg salad sandwich.

IMG_1631

And I had the hokkaido ramen with chicken, corn, butter, bean sprouts, and extra seaweed.

IMG_1635

A home-cooked meal!  Trader Joe’s frozen mahi mahi burgers, steak fries, and roasted baby cauliflower with sumac and smoked paprika.  All dipped in a sauce of honey habanero hot sauce, honey, and mayo.
