Best Weekend Ever

Adam and I had time together on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and we had just the best weekend ever! We got super lucky with nice weather which makes all of the difference this time of year.

Friday night we met up with friends for distanced fun in Brooklyn. Dinner and some stand-up comedy. Ample Hills does shows on their rooftop and each $10 ticket comes with a giant cup of ice cream! I got Coffee Toffee and No Sleep ‘Til Pumpkin – coffee ice cream with pumpkin gooey butter cake pieces.

Saturday we took a sixteen mile walk around the Upper West Side and Central Park.

And Sunday we visited the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

Food highlights from the week include…

Rainbow cookie iced latte with edible glitter and pink whipped cream(!!!) from Crave.

Pumpkin things. PSLs from La Colombe and Nitro Beverage Co.

Orwashers sourdough bagel with hand-cut smoked salmon and herbed cream cheese.

Breakfast tacos. With sliced turkey, scrambled eggs, smoked cheddar, and red and green hot sauce.

We tried Laderach chocolate for the first time and now we are smitten.

Snacks from H-Mart. Oreo bubble tea candy and durian chocolates. Plus seaweed and salted egg potato chips.

A two chip chocolate chip cookie from Levain (newest best cookie ever) and a Campfire Cappuccino from Orwashers (with toasted marshmallow and hickory smoke, newest best marshmallow coffee ever).

Dinner at Tradisyon. I had Kare Kare – stewed oxtail and brisket in peanut sauce with eggplant, green beans, and bok choy and shrimp paste.

Plus we got delicious popsicles. Soy milk with mochi and brown sugar and calamansi cheesecake with meringue.

Sips And Sweets

Last weekend the husband and I were both off Friday night through Monday morning and it was amazing! It was the most time in a row together we’ve had in months! We made the absolute most of it cuddling with the dog, taking multiple trips into Brooklyn, and catching up on the last season of Agents of Shield.

Our favorite activity of the weekend was definitely the afternoon we spent in Industry City enjoying the art.

We ate a million exciting treats, highlights of which include…

A freddo cappuccino from Oasis Cafe. Also an unphotographed Oreo caramel mousse!

Phin-brewed coffee with draft chocolate milk.

Love, Nelly – a newish Colombian bakery in Bushwick – is our new favorite spot. Every single design choice is perfect.

Among other things, we had a coffee with condensed milk and crushed ice,

and a shaved ice with passion fruit and almond syrups and passion fruit meringues.

A fresh soursop milkshake from a Vietnamese spot in Flushing.

Bars have to sell you a food item with your drinks to serve outdoors here and Adam’s favorite German spot has added a cup of marshmallows and gummi bears to its menu!

Dinosaur-themed beers, Three Floyd’s LazerSnake IPA and Toppling Goliath’s King Sue IPA with mango, orange, and pineapple.

The world’s most exciting maple key lime margarita is made with sparkly, glitter-infused maple syrup.

Drinks at Diamond Reef. Their outdoor space is great and they served me the best frozen pina colada of my life! Also chips and guac, blistered shishitos, and a pretty great guava rum punch.

Coconut Iced Coffee

I work this weekend but I do have some fun date nights planned.  Highlights from the past week include…

We made painkillers!  Dark rum, coconut milk, coconut cream, pineapple juice, orange juice, and nutmeg (and edible glitter stars!).

IMG_3986

And since it was in the house, I put coconut cream in my iced coffee.

IMG_3996

A yogurt bowl with peanut butter toffee granola and fresh blueberries.  I need to make an effort to eat more berries while they’re still in season.

IMG_3995

Watermelon jerky.  I was past due on eating this… it is Apple Month next week!

IMG_4004

These birthday cake bunny grahams are a 10/10.  Perfectly balanced sweetness and soooo cute.

IMG_3972

Green beans (roasted, then sauteed with duck sauce, soy sauce, and Chinese mustard) with Trader Joe’s frozen vegan orange chicken.

IMG_4007

A tasting plate dinner win – rainbow baby carrots, bbq kettle chips, smoked salmon dip, and roasted cauliflower with five spice.

IMG_3981

Guava – Luxardo – Soursop

Highlights from this week include – easy frozen meals, my first time making (and eating!) carbonara, and cocktail walks with Adam and Webster…

Strawberry guava sour.

IMG_3791

Grimm (local) barrel-aged sour brewed with cashmere hops.

IMG_3794

Soursop daiquiris.

IMG_3774

This drink trio made a great team.

IMG_3758

Trader Joe’s frozen scallion pancakes with Kewpie, Sriracha, and furikake.

IMG_3766

Amy’s chile relleno frozen casserole.

IMG_3767

I made carbonara with turkey bacon and whole-wheat pasta and it was still 10/10 decadent!  With roasted baby eggplant.

IMG_3786

We had leftover egg whites from the pasta so I made scrambled eggs the next night.  With kale and Korean chili flakes.  Plus turkey bacon and buttered pumpernickel-rye toast.

IMG_3807

P.S. These chocolate-covered gummi bears were perfection!  The chocolate and the gummies were both amazing so the combo was even better.

IMG_3752

Sprinkles And Sushi

We were easing ourselves back to work so we kept my birthday weekend pretty low-key.  Adam and I made super exciting, sprinkle-packed coffees and walked around Cold Spring Harbor admiring the flowers in the morning and then got sushi take-out for dinner and  I video-chatted with my parents while opening presents.  And the next night we met up with friends for drinks/dinner/a long walk around Park Slope.  It was perfect!

Highlights include…

Birthday dalgona coffee.

IMG_3622

Quad iced latte from Balancero.

IMG_3641

Fredo cappuccino (espresso blended with ice and topped with frothed milk) from The Grand.  <– my new favorite coffee

IMG_3645

Lox and cream cheese biscuit from Comfortland.

IMG_3648

An epic yogurt bowl – – plain Greek yogurt with cashew butter, plum, plucot, apricot, and Bueno Bar.

IMG_3656

I left key lime pie off of my list of favorite foods the other day, but it’s definitely in the top fifteen!  Westbrook’s Key Lime Pie Gose is fantastic.  I also made a wonderful key lime pie cocktail with lime juice, vodka, sweetened condensed milk, and key lime seltzer.

IMG_3616

Birthday sushi.  I got seaweed salad, a roll with egg and pickled vegetables, and a roll with king crab, crunch, avocado, and spicy mayo.

IMG_3637

Chuko Ramen.  I got the kimchi ramen with soy eggs.  It was so great to see friends for the first time in months… we were sitting outside and only took our masks off to eat and we all felt pretty safe about it.

Cross your fingers for me that it’s an easy transition back to work, please!

Birthday Week

Today is my birthday!  Woo-hoo to getting another year older!!

We were supposed to be home in St. Thomas to celebrate so Adam and I have actually been on vacation staycation this week.  A tropical island is obviously always the preferred option but social-distancing fun in the best city isn’t a bad second choice.  We’ve taken several long walks, had lots of cuddling time with Webster, and watched a ton of Seinfeld and The Office.  Plus we’ve eaten so many good things!  If I was going to name ten of my top favorite foods I’d say Diet Cherry Coke Zero, vodka, espresso, sweetened condensed milk, soursop, nachos, cheeseburgers, ice cream, roasted green beans, and Pad See Ew and I’ve eaten all but three of those things in the past week.

IMG_3584

Highlights include…

A ton of yummy things from Win Son Bakery.  The standouts were the mochi doughnut and the Fan Tuan (rice roll) with egg and Chinese cruller.

IMG_3613

A fancy picnic (from Ellen’s) in our car at the end of the North Fork.

IMG_3596

We had a lobster roll and duck fried rice.

IMG_3600

Plus a local passionfruit IPA.

IMG_3603

Soursop ice creams.  I’ve been wanting to go to Taste of the Tropics for a decade and their soursop ice cream did not disappoint.

IMG_3577

I actually preferred Island Pops though.  Soursop + nutmeg.

IMG_3580

IPAs at Greenpoint Harbor Brewing.

IMG_3593

Tamarind + mango + tequila = our new all-time favorite homemade cocktail.

IMG_3606

East Wind Snack Shop makes our favorite dumplings in the city.  Dry-aged beef potstickers // Shanghai vegetable steamed dumplings with ginger scallion sauce // veggie noodles.

IMG_3587

Happy birthday to me! 🙂

A Few Of My Favorite Things

We had quite a lovely time this past weekend; several long walks, lots of dog cuddles, and I had at least six of my favorite foods.  Five highlights include…

{1} The new cold brew can from Partners Coffee.

IMG_3536

{2} A coffee date at Rose Wolf.  We had a quad iced latte with skin milk (<– #1 favorite thing) and a whipped coffee with oat milk and vanilla.

IMG_3566

{3} The ET Stay Home series from Evil Twin is our new all-time favorite in beer.  We were over the moon for #8 (a sour ale brewed with pineapple, guava, hot chili peppers, and conditioned on marshmallows) and #9 (a sour ale brewed with brown sugar, apples, apricots, almonds, and milk sugar).

IMG_3573

{4} Halo Halo from Pig and Khao.  Shaved ice with leche flan, ube ice cream, and macapuno.

IMG_3555

{5} My favorite thing I’ve eaten all year = the dumpling collaboration from Pizza Loves Emily and Mimi Chengs.  Pat LaFrieda dry-aged beef, Grafton aged cheddar, crushed pretzels, caramelized onions, and Emmy Sauce.

Soursop And Szechuan Peppers

Today is my 1st day back in at the hospital after a day off and a two-day stint of project days at home.  I had to recertify in ServSafe and I had a big task to work on (updating the Nutrition Department’s Clinical Practice Guidelines to be more current/evidence-based) so my boss let me work from home, which was lovely.   I got to leisurely brew Phin coffee and sip while I worked!  Plus I ate a million snacks.  <– Normally I sit in the ICUs and wear an N-95 for most of the day so I took full advantage of having a free face!

IMG_3505

Highlights included…

The company that makes the instant espresso we love for Dalgona coffees also makes a really good espresso roast.

IMG_3479

Plain Greek yogurt bowl with blackberries, peach, cashew butter, and a chopped up Bueno Bar.  <– I realize it is ridiculous to stir a candy bar into your lunch but this was breath-takingly good and I’m glad I did it!

IMG_3497

Vanilla skyr yogurt bowl with blackberries, black plum, cashew butter, coconut chips, and starry sprinkles.

IMG_3520

Adam and I had to go into Manhattan for a doctor’s appointment so we stopped by Bibble and Sip for a cream puff.  A cream puff topped with crème brûlée and filled with milk tea cream and boba!

20200714_180153

I snacked on nuts every day this week.  These sweet Thai chili almonds were a favorite.

IMG_3508

Still obsessed with Hal’s caffeinated cola seltzer.

IMG_3516

Adam and are both head over heels for these dinner mints.  We made it through 12 years of marriage before we realized we are both fans of these guys!

IMG_3485

This soursop ice cream was possibly the very best packaged ice cream I’ve ever tasted.

IMG_3481

I topped this cheese enchilada meal with more cheese, sour cream, and Crystal hot sauce and it was 10/10.  P.S. I highly recommend Amy’s frozen meal options, this one is good even if you aren’t over the top about it.

IMG_3511

There’s a newish poke place in our neighborhood that lets you add a thousand toppings.  This was white rice with crabcake, tofu, eel sauce, spicy mayo, cucumber, shiitakes, shredded carrot, string bean, green onion, tamago (shredded egg omelet), oshinko (pickled veggies), inari (tofu skin), garlic crisps, and lotus chips.

IMG_3488

Blistered green beans – sauteed with garlic, ginger, and chili oil – with Trader Joe’s mini chicken and cilantro wontons.

IMG_3525

Have a great – safe, distanced – weekend!
