Birthday Week

Today is my birthday!  Woo-hoo to getting another year older!!

We were supposed to be home in St. Thomas to celebrate so Adam and I have actually been on vacation staycation this week.  A tropical island is obviously always the preferred option but social-distancing fun in the best city isn’t a bad second choice.  We’ve taken several long walks, had lots of cuddling time with Webster, and watched a ton of Seinfeld and The Office.  Plus we’ve eaten so many good things!  If I was going to name ten of my top favorite foods I’d say Diet Cherry Coke Zero, vodka, espresso, sweetened condensed milk, soursop, nachos, cheeseburgers, ice cream, roasted green beans, and Pad See Ew and I’ve eaten all but three of those things in the past week.

Highlights include…

A ton of yummy things from Win Son Bakery.  The standouts were the mochi doughnut and the Fan Tuan (rice roll) with egg and Chinese cruller.

IMG_3613

A fancy picnic (from Ellen’s) in our car at the end of the North Fork.

IMG_3596

We had a lobster roll and duck fried rice.

IMG_3600

Plus a local passionfruit IPA.

IMG_3603

Soursop ice creams.  I’ve been wanting to go to Taste of the Tropics for a decade and their soursop ice cream did not disappoint.

IMG_3577

I actually preferred Island Pops though.  Soursop + nutmeg.

IMG_3580

IPAs at Greenpoint Harbor Brewing.

IMG_3593

Tamarind + mango + tequila = our new all-time favorite homemade cocktail.

IMG_3606

East Wind Snack Shop makes our favorite dumplings in the city.  Dry-aged beef potstickers // Shanghai vegetable steamed dumplings with ginger scallion sauce // veggie noodles.

Happy birthday to me! 🙂

Boots On The Moon

Five things from the past week —

{1} I really enjoyed these two cans from Nitro Coffee Company.  The nitro gives them a super velvet-y mouthfeel.

IMG_3464

{2} A very hydrating cocktail.  Vodka with lime, watermelon juice, and watermelon seltzer.

IMG_3452

{3} We made twice-baked potatoes that were delicious.  Stuffed with butter, sharp cheddar, turkey bacon, green onion, Kewpie, and fish sauce.

IMG_3469

{4} A very loose take on homemade okonomiyaki.  Made with shredded brussel sprouts!

IMG_3456

{5} Did I mention yet that we adored Space Force?  We also loved the new SF-themed ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s.

Sweet Polly, Sweetie Pies

Adam was on vacation this weekend and since we couldn’t travel anywhere we did all of the fun, social-distancing things in New York!  Highlights include…

Breakfast from Sweetie Pies on Main in Cold Springs Harbor.  We got a cookies and cream scone

IMG_3299

and a quad, non-fat, iced latte with toasted marshmallow syrup

IMG_3295

and ate while walking around and admiring the water.

IMG_3302

IMG_3307

Lunch from Lunch Lobster Roll in Montauk.  We got lobster rolls for take-out and ate near the beach.  They gave us so much lobster!

IMG_3337

Drinks from Sweet Polly in Park Slope.  The fact that social distancing rules have pretty much killed open container laws in NYC is a giant silver lining.  This pina colada was perfect for enjoying on a long stroll.

IMG_3331

IMG_20200627_182457_832

Dinner from Takumen in Long Island City.  We got take-out and ate on the water!!  <– best ambiance of the weekend

IMG_3317

IMG_3321

Hoji-cha bubble tea with oat milk.

IMG_3308

Karaage fried chicken.

IMG_3327

Ban ban chicken ramen for me.  Topped with chili oil and a soft-boiled egg.

It’s Easy Being Greenpoint

Non-food things I’ve been loving lately —

Seinfeld!  I obviously quite enjoyed it in the ’90’s as well but we’ve been doing a rewatch on Hulu.  I can’t tolerate any TV that isn’t light/funny lately so old sitcoms are perfect for me.

“Adore” by Amy Shark has been played at least once on every one of my runs recently.  I heard it on an episode of Schitt’s Creek, which I’m also completely obsessed with but had to stop watching in the middle because the final season isn’t out on Netflix yet.

Dave Chapelle’s new special, “8:46,” should be required reading for any white person who still isn’t clear on why the Black Lives Matter protests are happening/necessary.

We spent Sunday getting take-out and picnicing around Greenpoint and it was a perfect day.  I love everything about how the businesses in that neighborhood brand themselves, it’s such a delight just to walk around and admire stuff.

Edible highlights this weekend —

Quad shot iced Americano with skim milk from Maman.  Plus an absolutely divine double chocolate cookie with oat milk ganache.

IMG_3232

IMG_3235

Toasted coconut almonds.  I’ve been having a real love affair with nuts lately and these were a perfect blend of salty and sweet.

IMG_3223

Take-out cocktails and a cheeseburger from Elder Greene was obviously our best lunch of the year so far.

IMG_3239

IMG_3242

Plus we got cocktails from Ramona – frozen painkiller!! – for dessert.

IMG_3245

Our long-time favorite pizza spot recently reopened so we got a giant buffalo chicken pie.

IMG_3229

I made spicy salmon roll fries.  With Kewpie, Furikaki, Sriracha, rice vinegar, and smoked salmon.

IMG_3252

Take Me Out

This weekend we: Ate all the take-out.  Took the dog on several long walks.  Washed the dog and turned him into an adorable woolly mammoth.  Did our grocery shopping for the next two weeks.

I also went on a really great run and started re-watching America’s Next Top Model.

Highlights include…

Obsessed with these Trader Joe’s bbq popped chips.  I prefer a smoky bbq flavor and this fits the bill.

IMG_2824

Even more obsessed with this Evil Twin pink pineapple IPA.  Served in a go-cup because we took a cocktail hour walk with Webster that knocked our socks off.

IMG_2828

We got great take-out from a local Mediterranean spot.  Tons of pita bread with all of the smokey eggplant dips.  Plus bulgar with tzatziki and chicken (plus roasted broccoli).

IMG_2843

And we ordered all of their desserts!

IMG_2834

We also got great take-out from a local Szechuan spot.  I had kung pow tofu with veggie rice noodles and Chinese cabbage with peppers.

IMG_2854

Ice Cream In Space

Now that I’m working again, Saturday and Sunday did feel a little bit more like a weekend, even if the biggest excitement was standing in an hour+ line to buy groceries for two weeks.

Highlights include…

Lavender latte pour over.

IMG_2461

Plan Icelandic-style yogurt with cinnamon, maple syrup, berries, granola, and peanut butter.

IMG_2466

Mint chip freeze-dried ice cream.

IMG_2450

The last of our Evil Twin stash.

IMG_2438

Leftover pizza.

IMG_2458

Breakfast totchos.  Tater tots with sharp cheddar, eggs, broccoli, onion, yellow and orange pepper, and turkey maple breakfast sausage.  Topped with a lot of zhoug and ketchup.

IMG_2444

I recommend ordering yourself the coffee, the ice cream, and the beer while you’re stuck at home!

Coffee, Coffee, Coffee*

*please read the title to the tune of the Brady Bunch’s “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!”

It was an exciting week in home entertainment for us – I started watching Schitt’s Creek, and of course fell in love, and borrowed my mom’s Prime log-in to binge watch all of Absentia.

It was also an exciting week in home caffeination – I had a different (fancy!) coffee drink every day.

Highlights include…

Dalgona coffee!  Here is an explainer.  I used instant espresso powder and looooved it.

IMG_2322

Lavendar latte.

IMG_2240

Vietnamese coffee made with a phin filter.

IMG_2330

Lavazza espresso.

IMG_2275

2% plain Fage Greek yogurt with blueberries, candied walnuts, cinnamon, and maple syrup.

IMG_2254

With blueberries, cinnamon, maple, candied walnuts, and maple walnut granola.

IMG_2307

If you think the dog doesn’t get his own yogurt and berries bowl you’re crazy.

IMG_2243

IMG_2249

Soft-scrambled eggs with mozzarella and Korean chili flakes / tater tots with Sriracha, Kewpie, and furikake / baby carrots.

IMG_2313

Egg and cheese onion bagel with soft-scrambled eggs with mozzarella plus Sriracha and mayo.

IMG_2300

The Starburst soda pop flavored jelly beans are pretty darn good, especially the cola and lime flavor.

IMG_2259

Number 2 Pencil’s single-serve chocolate chip cookies are fantastic.  I added rainbow sprinkles and espresso powder.

IMG_2282

Local pizza with fried chicken, roasted zucchini, and hot peppers.

IMG_2329

Giant salad bowl – romaine lettuce, Trader Joe’s balsamic and fig dressing, Trader Joe’s zhoug, celery, tater tats, and turkey meatballs (made with panko, egg, Trader Joe’s umami powder, and Korean chili flakes).

IMG_2262

Giant salad bowl – romaine, balsamic, zhoug, celery, candied walnuts, fresh mint, and baked seitan.

IMG_2293

I’d say “have a great weekend,” but doesn’t every day basically feel the same at this point?

Virtual Road Trip

One silver lining to not getting to see any of my friends in person for the discernible future is that we’ve been doing a better job of connecting long-distance.  I spent hours on the phone with a childhood friend the other day and Sunday morning my cousin and I took an online yoga class together.  <– super fun fact? The yoga class was actually being taught by another one of my childhood friends!  Plus, I know that I am insanely lucky to be in such a good marriage, I’m at home with my favorite person on earth.

This weekend we took a trip to Virginia in the form of some of our our favorite drinks.  Coffee from Black Hand.

IMG_2131

Rum from Vitae.  With cinnamon coke and lime!

IMG_2142

We’ve been drinking a lot of fancy packaged coffees to help me deal with my withdrawal from coffee shop quad iced lattes.

IMG_2161

IMG_2164

I used the last of my fresh berries in this yogurt bowl.  Plain Greek with maple, cinnamon, and TJ’s mixed nut butter.

IMG_2171

Delivery successes.  Bubble tea.

IMG_2195

Tons of Mexican food.

IMG_2191

Menemen, loosely based on this recipe.  I used sumac, chili flakes, pepper, smoked paprika, and fresno chilis.  Plus TJ’s rose fingerling potato chips, which were crazy addictive, I went back for thirds.

IMG_2149

TJ’s vegan orange chicken served on a big bed of green beans in gojuchang.
