Oahu Part III, Fun Places We Ate

IMG-20191230-WA0010

We were blown away by how good everything we ate on this trip was!  Hawaiian chefs are absolutely killing it.  The next time we go back to Hawaii I would strongly consider returning to Oahu just to revisit some of these spots!

I really tried to limit my picture taking and this post will be a million pages long if I list out every single thing we ate so this will just be the highlights of the highlights…

** Kona Coffee Purveyors.

Nitro Kona coffee with a black sesame kougan amann (not shown).  Affogato.

IMG-20191231-WA0000

** Leonard’s Bakery.

This malasada (Portuguese doughnut) stuffed with guava cream was my favorite bite of the entire trip.

IMG-20191230-WA0004

IMG-20191230-WA0002

** Matsumoto Shave Ice.

This was my favorite shave ice of the trip; the flavors were spot on and the ice cream was wonderfully chewy and a great foil to the ice.  Guava, passion fruit, and strawberry on top of vanilla ice cream and topped with condensed milk.

IMG_20191230_135507_074

** O’Kims.

Dumplings stuffed with king oyster mushroom, button ear wood, yellow squash, zucchini, and truffle paste, topped shoyu jelly and pickled dikon.

IMG-20191231-WA0026

Korean fried chicken with gochujang, housemade gnocchi, brussel sprouts, purple rice, and kimchi.

IMG_20191231_185215_410

** The Pig and the Lady.

Midday Run – mezcal, passion fruit, vanilla, habanero, and lemon (not shown).  Le Swoon – Kohana rum agricole, Okinawan sweet potato, pandan, coconut milk, cinnamon, lime, and aphrodite bitters.

IMG-20191231-WA0022

Chocolate banana tart with Valrhona dark chocolate cremeux, chocolate cookie crust, fresh banana and banana marmalade, toasted hazelnuts, and tamarind caramel.

IMG-20191231-WA0013

** Piggy Smalls.

This was hands down our best meal of the trip!  We ordered all the things.  Brussel sprouts with makrut lime, peanut, fried shallots, cabbage slaw, and pickled red onions.

IMG_20191231_111950_893

Stir-fried ramen noodles with aged garlic shoyu, Chinese chives, pickled fresno chile, and shrimp.

IMG-20191231-WA0007

Lychee infused milk cake with blueberry compote, lychee chantilly cream, and lemon citrus streusel.

IMG-20191231-WA0009

Hanoi egg coffee, Kona dark roast poured on whipped egg yolk and vanilla bean.

IMG_20191231_114037_345

** The Surfing Pig.

Best cocktails of the trip.  I drank way too much prior to our 10 hour red-eye flight.  The bartender was crazy talented and also maybe my new favorite person – she hugged us on our way out.  Smoked rosemary mezcal margarita.  I also had a spicy paloma with mezcal (not shown).

IMG_20200102_112920_821

** Waiola Shave Ice.

Guava and passion fruit with vanilla ice cream, condensed milk, and housemade mochi.

Waffley Glad

We had a really amazing time in Hawaii (several posts are coming soon!) but I am awfully glad to be back home with Webster!

IMG_1092

I didn’t make it the grocery until Sunday afternoon but we still managed to eat some yummy things this weekend.  Highlights include…

My new favorite yogurt bowl = Trader Joe’s plain Skyr yogurt with maple syrup, blueberries, banana, and blistered peanuts.

IMG_1101

Extra spicy, extra veggies hand-pulled noodles from our mall’s fancy food court.

IMG_1058

perfect snack.

IMG_1076

Costa Nova made me a fantastic quad iced latte!  Plus a waffle with marshmallow and cookie butter!

IMG_1074

We thought this frozen kunefe from Trader Joe’s was fantastic.  Highly recommend buying if you spot it.

IMG_1062

Waffle flavored chicken bites with baby carrots and maple sriracha aioli.

IMG_1083

My new favorite veggies bowl = a base of cauliflower rice with soft scrambled eggs, sauteed baby tomatoes, and avocado (topped with Cholula).

IMG_1110

The night before we left for Hawaii we celebrated our anniversary at Bowery Meat Company and the night we returned we feasted on leftover duck lasagna.

IMG_1065

Aloha, 17 Years

I hope that all my readers who celebrate had a merry Christmas!

IMG_1047

Three fun things from this week –

I bought chestnut paste – which basically tastes like Christmas! – and used it in amazing yogurt bowls.

IMG_1024

With cocoa granola and fresh strawberries.

IMG_1034

These bougie almond butter cups were surprisingly delicious.

IMG_1039

We made easy but great pasta bowls: boxed macaroni and cheese / canned smoked trout and anchovies / roasted broccoli and baby zucchini / topped with Kewpie and Sriracha.  Plus a side of sauteed baby cauliflower.

IMG_1048

Current excitement?  It is our 12 year wedding anniversary today!  And since we got married on our 5 year dating anniversary, that means we’ve been together for 17 years (aka half our lives!)!!  To celebrate, we are heading to Hawaii tomorrow!!!

Coffee Shops And Christmas Pop Ups

Adam and I had such a fun weekend!  We ate all of the things and saw a million twinkly lights.  Sooooooo many holiday pop up bars and holiday themed coffees!!

Holiday things – – –

Ample Hills‘ chocolate peppermint ice cream with white chocolate peppermint bark.  It was insane topped with marshmallow fluff!

IMG_0942

Maman‘s holiday cookie latte with eggnog ganache.

IMG_0951

Stumptown‘s rum raisin latte.  <– most exciting latte of the weekend

IMG_1009

Leyenda‘s Sleyenda pop up.  They have by far the most exciting and intentional pop up menu but unfortunately it was slammed while we were there and we only wanted to hang for one drink.  I had a delicious coquito with espolon reposado tequila, oloroso sherry, Braulio, coconut liqueur, coconut, cinnamon, and egg.

IMG-20191221-WA0015

IMG-20191221-WA0013

IMG_1017

The Springs‘ Ho Ho Holiday Lounge pop up.  Nog Yourself Out – Mt Gay black barrel aged rum, eggnog, oregeat, and nutmeg + Hot Springs – Cruzan blackstrap rum, hot chocolate, malt, and mini marshmallows.

A trip to White Noise‘s Brooklyn location.  We had a scrambled egg sandwich on brioche with cheddar, sun-dried tomato, and plum mayo.

IMG_0928

IMG_0933

Rose Wolf in Williamsburg is the cutest newish coffee shop.  And we had the best cake and coffee.  An extremely caffeinated and sugared cold brew with espresso, maple, caramel, cinnamon, and foamed milk + a chocolate funfetti cake.

A cute and yummy sparkling lime hibiscus tea.

IMG-20191221-WA0011

New Yorkers, Chuko makes the best ramen in the city!  And their chili oil is amazing.

IMG_0940

The veggie dumplings at East Wind Snack Shop are next level delicious.  Crispy, chewy, plump, and topped with a ginger scallion sauce.

Fluffy GBS

I don’t have a ton of photos to share from last week because I ate a bunch of celebratory meals sans camera.  By the time I leave for real next week it is going to feel fairly anticlimactic!

A work friend and I went out for drinks at Vitae {highlights include a maple cinnamon sour with smoked rum}.

A big group of co-workers took me out for lunch at Asado {highlights include a smoked chicken quesadilla}.

And my team took me out for dinner at Junction {highlights include a rum and coke with allspice syrup and charred baby carrots with goat cheese and carrot top chimichurri}.

Other highlights include…

Eggnog and coffee!

IMG_0669

A vanilla coffee can with a peanut butter chocolate chip Perfect Bar.

IMG_0660

The cortadito from Gaurijos is excellent.

IMG_0676

Vanilla bean yogurt with maple pecan granola and cranberry relish.

IMG_0667

S’mores pie and a cortado at Pie Chest.

IMG_20191124_115331_074

An orange creamsicle IPA my family brought me back from Maryland.

IMG_0681

Hardywood has released their Fluffy GBS – a toasted marshmallow gingerbread stout!

IMG_20191124_125046_546

My cousin took me out for excellent Thai food.  My drunken noodles were super spicy and loaded with veggies (including cauliflower!).

IMG-20191123-WA0001

Have a great week (and a happy Thanksgiving, all of my American readers)!

A New York Weekend

I spent a long weekend visiting my boys in New York and had the best time ever!  I walked a ton, caught up with friends, ate all the things, slept with Webster pressed up against my ribs, and got to hold my husband’s hand while we talked about his new gig – perfect!

Highlights included…

A 7 mile walk down through Chelsea and across the bridge into Williamsburg.

Iced lattes!  Terremoto and Cafe Leon Dore.

IMG_6391

dIMG_6438

Danish chocolate cinnamon swirl at Ole and Steen.

IMG_6377

Brunch with a former coworker at Penelope.  I love taking people there because they are always blown away by how cute it is.  And my croissant sandwich with scrambled eggs, cheddar, and pesto was delicious.

IMG_20190909_115951_405

Lunch at the new Xi’an Town.  Cold fried hand ripped noodles with veggies plus cucumber salad.

IMG_6445

Dinner with friends at Gertie.  I had the blue plate special – rotisserie chicken, local green beans, and schmaltzy fried potatoes.

IMG_20190907_185701_550

A half pound pink velvet cookie stuffed with cream cheese frosting from City Cakes.

IMG_6382

The best thing we ate all weekend = ice cream from Spoons.  Vanilla soft serve blended with sprinkles and Fruity Pebbles and topped with torched marshmallow!

Convenience Foods And Cocktails

It was not a super exciting weekend for me – Adam was out of town and I worked on Sunday.  I spent my single day off on errands and chores around the house.  On the meal front I was all about snacks, convenience foods, and cocktails.

Highlights…

Iced coffee with vanilla bean powder.

IMG_5783

Perfect Bar comes in cookie dough flavor!! <– I’m not sure if this flavor is very old or very new but oddly I cannot find a single mention of it on their site or the internet in general

IMG_5827

Polar unicorn kisses seltzer.  I am obsessed with these fantasy-themed mini cans.

IMG_5792

Am I determined to try every existing variety of pimento cheese before I leave the South?  Yes.  Northerners, take note – this variety from Trader Joe’s is not very good; pimento dip should not be homogeneous but should have individual shreds of cheese.

IMG_5761

On the other hand, these (vegan!) mini marshmallows are vanilla-y perfection.

IMG_5801

Still in love with these chicken and waffle chips.

IMG_5820

Spicy ramen + agua fresca cerveza.

IMG_5804

A not very good frozen meal + a quite good rum and coke (with Vitae golden rum and tons of fresh lime).

IMG_5831

Local Love

Highlights from this week – my in-laws are in town and we had fun showing them Charlottseville one last time // we had some great dinners out, including a new spot that’s a new favorite // Wissotzky Tea Company – an international, family-owned tea company based in Israel with offices in London and the United States – sent me some of their inventive flavors to try…

Coffee for the week: Trader Joe’s espresso blend with sweetened condensed milk.

IMG_5722

Tea samples; their four newest, spiciest flavors: Ginger and Turmeric Spiced Chai, Pumpkin Spiced Chai, Salted Caramel Chai, Spiced Nana Mint Chai.  I cold-brewed my cups per the company’s instructions – a ratio of 4 cups cold water to 5 tea bags, covered in the fridge for 15-36 hours.

IMG_5634

Salted Caramel Chai with a splash half and half (added post picture).

IMG_5680

Spiced Nana Mint Chai with sugar and fresh lime.  <– fair warning, this flavor was too peppery for Adam’s tastes

IMG_5688

Tropical flavors from the Mexican ice cream place down the street: passionfruit, guava, and mamey!

IMG_5728

Plus I picked up these super interesting gummy candies.  They have milk in them and the texture is extra soft and very unique.

IMG_5736

Roasted green beans and TJ’s turkey corn dogs.  Apparently I love corn dogs, I couldn’t stop raving about how tasty these were!

IMG_5701

Sheet pan hash: potatoes, onion, bell pepper, shredded brussel sprouts, and maple chicken breakfast sausage.

IMG_5737

Smoked Kitchen and Tap: a bbq spot we love in Crozet.  I had smoked turkey, cole slaw, and creamed corn with smoked jalopeno.

IMG_20190710_181609_315

The Local: an amazing spot in Bellmont.  I had the best, most Southern plate – buttermilk-brined fried chicken with pimento cheese mac and cheese, collard greens, and house made hot sauce and a buttermilk-chive drizzle.

IMG_20190711_185757_337

Modern Nosh: a newish, super cute deli (which means I finally have a deli in Charlottesville!).

IMG_5754

I had a half turkey reuben and soup with the best matzoh ball of my life.

IMG_5752

Plus we split latkes that were wonderfully full of garlic.  Yum!
