All Highs

We had a great time this weekend visiting some of our favorite spots and discovering some new favorites! Highlights include…

High Low Beverage Company. Vietnamese-influenced with a gorgeous backyard. Cherry and lime leaf jelly doughnut.

Tiki New Fashioned – banana-infused Four Roses bourbon, Plantation pineapple dark rum, pandan syrup, tiki bitters / HiLo Hello – Thai chili-infused mezcal with lime, passionfruit, and cane syrup.

Papaya salad with sambal beef jerky, cabbage, herbs, peanuts, fried shallots, fresno chili, and plum vinaigrette.

Double Chicken, Please. Draft cocktails, massive sandwiches, and clever desserts! #2 – Teeling small batch whiskey, brown butter, black raisin, honey, verjus (warm) / #9 Barcardi Cuatro rum, St. Germain, verjus, amontilado sherry, banana, walnut.

Five spice and plum salt sweet potato chips.

Hen of the woods mushroom sandwich with seaweed and bamboo / fried chicken sandwich with shrimp, brioche, and salted duck yolk sauce.

Shot – mezcal with plum and shiso / ice ice weenie – chocolate ice cream on a potato bun with salted duck egg sauce, hot honey, and whiskey cream.

We found fresh soursop juice at the Dominican place in Essex Market.

All the beers (truly, almost all of the beers) at Evil Twin. My three favorites were the ET Stay Home 6 Royal Treatment – sour ale with peaches, papaya, pineapple, passion fruit, coconut, marshmallow, vanilla, and cacao / This Deli Needs a Bigger Double Kiwi Lime Coconut Muffin Lassi Gose / Luxurious Luxury – imperial Berliner gose with grapefruit, tart raspberry candy, coconut, and marshmallow.

We also finally checked out (and loved!) Bridge and Tunnel Brewery just down the street. Everything we tried was great but the standout was the F**k the Virus coconut New England IPA.

Super Moon Bakehouse. Epic baked goods. I loved this cookie butter, dulce de leche crunch cookie with my whole heart.

I also brought home a square of sourdough focaccia and made an insane turkey and cheddar sandwich.

I couldn’t contain myself but this terrible picture is to serve as a placeholder to remind Adam and I that we want takeout from The Meat Hook again immediately. We had several sandwiches and the best french onion dip I’ve ever tasted.

Merry And Bright

Last week was great, and filled with great eats. It worked out that I was off from work most of the week, which was just lovely! And Adam and I were both home together for Christmas, which has rarely happened in our marriage. The absolute best part of the week was walking around Manhattan (8 miles!) admiring holiday decorations and checking out the Rockefeller tree – – it was impossible to capture in a photo but even in the daytime the lights were stunning.

Other highlights included…

We obviously had to buy both of these eggnogs to do a comparison taste-test (premium was a bit better!).

Christmas morning dalgona coffee with eggnog.

Max Brenner‘s peanut butter hot chocolate blew our minds.

Trader Joe’s peppermint mini marshmallows are great.

And we loved this peppermint seltzer.

Birthday cake scone from Sweetie Pies on Main. We went out to Cold Spring Harbor to admire their decorations. And yes, we do have a car tree.

This snowball doughnut from Comfortland was insane. It was coated in coconut and stuffed with marshmallow cream.

Plain Greek yogurt bowl with banana, chocolate cashew butter, and cinnamon.

Very impressed with this vegan jerky.

I’ve had my eye on this salmon candy spread for months and it did not disappoint. Paired wonderfully with everything-style crackers.

Still very into this frozen meal. Also fresh mandarin oranges.

Best meal I’ve ever made – crockpot five spice chicken thighs / celery, bok choy, and scallions / rice cakes / gojuchang brown sugar sauce. Topped with chili crisp.

We broiled the leftovers with mozzarella cheese and it somehow got even better.

The best meal we’ve ever eaten came from Milu. Mandarin duck with duck fat rice and marinated cucumbers / brisket with chili garlic mint sauce and tofu seaweed salad / chili crisp fried chicken with scallion mayo. Plus egg tart soft-serve. Every single bite was swoonworthy.

A roasted sheet-pan meal with brussel sprouts, cave aged blue cheese, turkey sausage, dried sweet cherries, yellow raisins, and sweet and spicy pecans.

Soft-scrambled eggs with roasted broccoli rabe and purple cauliflower, cucumber salad, and hot-smoked salmon.

Can’t (Co)Quit(o)

The last week has been pretty wonderful; we made it through the first winter storm unscathed and I’ve officially eaten all of the on-theme holiday things I was excited about for this year!

Highlights included…

787‘s iced coquito latte won our hearts as our favorite coffee of the year! So thick and wonderfully spiced and just sweet enough! We also had a fantastic marzipan latte.

We tried, and loved, the new-ish Fan Fan Doughnuts.

Strawberry jam filled / salted brown butter caramel glazed / pecan hawaij sticky bun.

Lunch at Nowon. I thought I didn’t like soju but this Tiger Bomb cocktail with jasmine, yuja citron, and mint syrup changed my mind.

I kept warm with Fire Chicken – spicy chicken with cabbage, rice cakes, and mozarella.

And lost my mind for the honey butter tater tots with labneh and seaweed.

Checking out Leyenda‘s Sleyenda decorations is our favorite holiday tradition and this year’s outdoor set up did not disappoint.

I had a Coquito Ho Ho – tequilla, sherry, coconut liquor, and coconut with cinnamon and egg.

And a Candy Striper which was hands-down our favorite cocktail/beverage of the year. I said at least ten times “this drink is making me so happy!” It’s a frozen blend of cachaça, coconut, vanilla, maple, lime, peppermint, and cardamom.

Hummus and pretzels with nougat and candied apricot candies my parents sent me.

Malai‘s toasted nutmeg ice cream basically tastes like eggnog! And the consistency is out of this world.

We made a batch of my Bahn Mi Chicken Salad and it was even better than I remembered. With roasted veggies and local sourdough.

Sourdough also made an appearance in great turkey sandwiches with cheddar, jam, and garlic mayo. Plus baby carrots and salted egg yolk chips.

Buffalo chicken meatball sandwiches. With sauteed carrot and celery in a mustard sauce.

Pumpkin And Papaya

Let’s just start this off with a GIANT sigh of relief! There was no post last week because I most ate a horrifying amount of ice cream while refreshing the election results. Thankfully our country made a move back towards decency this weekend and I was able to function as an adult and cook dinner and go to bed before 2 am.

Highlights from this weekend include…

Cherry cocoa coconut almonds. All of the mixes from Sahale have great balance.

I haven’t seen any eggnog yogurts yet this year so I’m still on the pumpkin. Siggi’s with granola, cashew butter, and maple syrup.

Paw-paya cocktail!

I loosely followed this recipe for Geng Dang Muu, swapping pork for turkey. Served with sticky sushi rice from one of our many nights of take-out last week.

We love this recipe for crock pot garlic brown sugar chicken (minus the bacon and with skinless chicken thighs). With sage and roasted broccoli and cauliflower.

Sunday we had – distanced, outdoor – reservations for the pre fixe dinner at Claro.

Our favorite dishes included a tostada with squash and peanuts and a ceviche-style artic char with smoked roe.

Sips And Sweets

Last weekend the husband and I were both off Friday night through Monday morning and it was amazing! It was the most time in a row together we’ve had in months! We made the absolute most of it cuddling with the dog, taking multiple trips into Brooklyn, and catching up on the last season of Agents of Shield.

Our favorite activity of the weekend was definitely the afternoon we spent in Industry City enjoying the art.

We ate a million exciting treats, highlights of which include…

A freddo cappuccino from Oasis Cafe. Also an unphotographed Oreo caramel mousse!

Phin-brewed coffee with draft chocolate milk.

Love, Nelly – a newish Colombian bakery in Bushwick – is our new favorite spot. Every single design choice is perfect.

Among other things, we had a coffee with condensed milk and crushed ice,

and a shaved ice with passion fruit and almond syrups and passion fruit meringues.

A fresh soursop milkshake from a Vietnamese spot in Flushing.

Bars have to sell you a food item with your drinks to serve outdoors here and Adam’s favorite German spot has added a cup of marshmallows and gummi bears to its menu!

Dinosaur-themed beers, Three Floyd’s LazerSnake IPA and Toppling Goliath’s King Sue IPA with mango, orange, and pineapple.

The world’s most exciting maple key lime margarita is made with sparkly, glitter-infused maple syrup.

Drinks at Diamond Reef. Their outdoor space is great and they served me the best frozen pina colada of my life! Also chips and guac, blistered shishitos, and a pretty great guava rum punch.

Al Fresco

What a wonderful weekend we just had!  I worked (super long, busy days) Friday, Saturday, Sunday but Adam was off in the evenings too so we made sure to aggressively enjoy ourselves.  Tons of NYC restaurants are doing safely distanced / non-exploitative outdoor dining now and we took full advantage.

Lump crab fried rice

IMG_4038

Tua Pad Prik Khing – wok-fried long beans, crispy tofu, and galangal chili paste.

IMG_4041

Dinner at Glasserie.  I had a hibiscus margarita.  Also a Hemingway daiquiri that knocked my socks off.

We shared a bunch of plates, each one better than the last.  Olives and pickled peppers // labne, honey, and griddled bread.

IMG_4056

Roasted lamb with potato and grilled scallions.

IMG_4059

Tzatziki with trout roe and potato husks.  <– my favorite dish of the weekend

Coconut Iced Coffee

I work this weekend but I do have some fun date nights planned.  Highlights from the past week include…

We made painkillers!  Dark rum, coconut milk, coconut cream, pineapple juice, orange juice, and nutmeg (and edible glitter stars!).

IMG_3986

And since it was in the house, I put coconut cream in my iced coffee.

IMG_3996

A yogurt bowl with peanut butter toffee granola and fresh blueberries.  I need to make an effort to eat more berries while they’re still in season.

IMG_3995

Watermelon jerky.  I was past due on eating this… it is Apple Month next week!

IMG_4004

These birthday cake bunny grahams are a 10/10.  Perfectly balanced sweetness and soooo cute.

IMG_3972

Green beans (roasted, then sauteed with duck sauce, soy sauce, and Chinese mustard) with Trader Joe’s frozen vegan orange chicken.

IMG_4007

A tasting plate dinner win – rainbow baby carrots, bbq kettle chips, smoked salmon dip, and roasted cauliflower with five spice.

A Few Of My Favorite Things

We had quite a lovely time this past weekend; several long walks, lots of dog cuddles, and I had at least six of my favorite foods.  Five highlights include…

{1} The new cold brew can from Partners Coffee.

IMG_3536

{2} A coffee date at Rose Wolf.  We had a quad iced latte with skin milk (<– #1 favorite thing) and a whipped coffee with oat milk and vanilla.

IMG_3566

{3} The ET Stay Home series from Evil Twin is our new all-time favorite in beer.  We were over the moon for #8 (a sour ale brewed with pineapple, guava, hot chili peppers, and conditioned on marshmallows) and #9 (a sour ale brewed with brown sugar, apples, apricots, almonds, and milk sugar).

IMG_3573

{4} Halo Halo from Pig and Khao.  Shaved ice with leche flan, ube ice cream, and macapuno.

IMG_3555

{5} My favorite thing I’ve eaten all year = the dumpling collaboration from Pizza Loves Emily and Mimi Chengs.  Pat LaFrieda dry-aged beef, Grafton aged cheddar, crushed pretzels, caramelized onions, and Emmy Sauce.
