A Sick Day from Life

Welcome to the work-week!  Sorry to leave you hanging, I had to take a “sick day” from life this weekend.  The Heart Walk was a ton of fun, but ultimately a bad idea.  I started with a fever and after spending that much time outside – you’d be surprised how long it takes to walk a 5k – I was done.  I slept for 4.5 solid hours Saturday afternoon!  We did manage to have a bit of fun this weekend though….

Trying out this “Hurricane Simulator” at the Mall – strange! – while getting plain tart froyo.

Using the food processor to whip up a batch of homemade chocolate peanut butter (no recipe as of yet, it still needs tweeks).

Eating tons of Butterscotch Pumpkin Cookies.

Mostly we cuddled up on the couch and watched tv though; it was heaven!

I knew today needed to be all about school work – I have a huge Anatomy Lab test on Thursday – so I started my morning with a cure-all (hopefully!) yogurt mix bowl!

0% Honey Oikos Greek Yogurt topped with canned pumpkin,

gingerbread granola,

homemade chocolate pb,

and a cherry pumpkin on top!

I’ve got a giveaway coming with lunch, be sure to stop by!

What was the highlight of your weekend?

Scotty Doesn’t Know

We had an impromptu date night tonight; the husband called up another couple on a whim and invited them over for dinner and “Eurotrip” watching.  Actually, Michelle was feeling sick, but the boys and I whipped up a pretty good meal as a threesome!  (maybe we got in the cramming position…..clearly I’m still a bit delirious!)

Before that though, we made a few trips and finished all of our grocery shopping for the week.  Hunger final hit while in Target so I grabbed a single serving pita chips and red pepper hummus from the cafe.

De-lish-us!  I am continually impressed by Target.

For dinner I made Chicken Cutlets with Fig Compote (recipe from Family Circle),

Adam made some roasted sweet potatoes,

and Patrick made a side salad.

We did good!  I took small servings because my cold has made my appetite all wonky.

And I still couldn’t even finish what I took, I left ~1-2bites of everything.

I didn’t actually fit in a stretch session, but we got in a pretty good workout of side-splitting laughter!  “Eurotrip” is one of my favorite movies; “here’s a fun fact – you made with your sister man!”  Actually, in order, my favorites are –

  1. Super Troopers
  2. Eurotrip
  3. The Hangover
  4. Knocked Up

I’m a bit of a guy in my entertainment choices 😉

We’ll say I worked up an appetite chuckling, because I did find room for dessert!

I’ve been waiting to make Rachel’s Pumpkin Butterscotch Cookies since I bookmarked them months ago!

Mmmmn, you can’t go wrong with pumpkin and butterscotch and the texture of these was awesomely cakey.

Tomorrow morning I’ve got to get up early to go to a 5k Heart Walk, yikes!  I’m going as part of a service group I joined so I can’t bow out, let’s hope I’m feeling healthy in the morning.

Be honest, did I get “Scotty Doesn’t Know” stuck in your head?

10-01-10

I’m freeeeeee!  I made it through Hell Week; although the real hell will be next week when I get my grades back – let’s just say my 4.0 semesters streak has ended!

I was feeling pretty sickly when I left the house this morning, so I told my immune system to buck up and gave it a serving of Blueberry POM juice, cut with club soda.

…..I also asked Ulrick to help drive away germs with his bear armour.

We didn’t have 230 until 9:30 today which meant I also got to sleep in a bit.  We had a guest lecturer who works as a Renal RD and she was fascinating.  I volunteered (just making beds, running errands, etc) in the dialysis unit at the hospital all last year and it brought up a lot of dietetics-centric questions for me.

I used the 2hour break between classes to finally study for my Orgo exam.  I snacked on a serving of Juju Ghosts from Target while I worked.

Sidenote – I’ve been stockpiling all things pumpkin and Halloween since this summer!  I’m crazy, so I refuse to even acknowledge their existence until October.  10-01-10 is a big date for me!  Expect to see an explosion of black and orange.

Not as exciting was the Orgo exam, which I most definitely failed.  I am making reading over my notes every day/weekend a major priority, I never want to be in the cramming position again (that sounds dirty!)!  Although when I got to Anatomy I did found out that with the (huge) curve I scored a 90% on that exam.

I walked to the co-op to buy (humane) meat after school and those of you who follow me on Twitter already know what I did along the way –

Tall, nonfat, iced, half syrup Starbucks pumpkin spice latte!

It’s actually a very busy weekend so the plan for tonight includes finishing the grocery shopping, the first home cooked dinner of the week, some baking, and hopefully a long stretch session!

Have you had a PSL yet this year?  When does fall “officially start” for you?

4-Out-of-5 Check In

Hell week actually hasn’t been as busy as I’d thought it would be – probably because I’ve not been putting in enough effort 😦  It’s been tough, but not undoable, and I’ve made every effort to get a good night sleep each day.

It has been tough enough that my immune system decided to cut out early.  I am sick sick sick and I bumbled around in a fever all afternoon.  Orgo did not get the attention it deserved and I’m devastated.

Sorry for not posting, be back tomorrow!

Two Down, Three to Go

I’m 2/5 done with hell week!  I got a B(ish) on my 100 test – booooo – and probably a 100% on my 110 quiz.  Right now I’m poised for a D (or less!) on the next three so I can’t talk.

Breakfast was a layer of Yoplait Honey Vanilla Greek Yogurt,

topped with smoothie – strawberries, water, coconut water, and Original Amazing Meal (free sample, very nice, basically flavorless but added a bit of tang),

topped with gingerbread granola –

Good.

I actually made a breakfast that was good, but I couldn’t finish it because of a rain incident.

Energy drink before test 1.

Southwest Flatbread Sandwich from library cafe (corn, beans, cheese, chicken).

Gym was not as good as usual; I started to run and was so exhausted that I just couldn’t.  I wasn’t about to waste a workout outfit though, I pulled up some Bio notes to distract myself and did some incline walking –

  • 5minute walking warm up
  • 5minutes jogging
  • 20minutes incline walking
  • 3minute cool down

2.07miles.

Pickle.

Serving of crackers with salsa.

Dinner, dipped in ranch.

Roasted yellow beans,

disappointing okra (it was so fibrous I couldn’t chew it!  I only choked down 1),

pizza thin, i.e. an Arnold’s WW Sandwich Thin with marinara and part-skim mozzarella.

Ice-cream sandwich for dessert.

I took this handful of the husband’s peanut M&M’s.  Then I put all but 4 back because I had just had an ice-cream sandwich and M&M’s aren’t even that exciting.

I have an Anatomy exam tomorrow, holy God.

How’s your week going?  Want to fill me in on any blogland gossip I’ve been missing?

My Achy Breaky Head

Ugh.  I had a strange, achy/heavy head feeling all day; which I’m sure was made worse by my crappy food choices.  I didn’t work out.  I’m not ready for any of my tests; probably because I didn’t study enough.  Ughs all around.

Jimmy Dean French Toast Griddler.  (p.s. these have just 210calories and 2g of saturated fat)

A huge honeycrisp apple topped with melted part-skim mozzarella and honey.  Win!

Popcorn, popcorn, popcorn.

A mini sandwich cookie that was the best thing I’ve ever eaten, seriously.

Buffalo chicken pizza (with ranch).

Adam and I made a huge pile of Dove chocolate wrapper.

Pleeeeeease, think smart thoughts for me tomorrow!

Hell Week But I’m Not Worried

Good morning, Monday!  I’ve got my own personal hell week coming up, and I fear that the blog will be neglected.  I wanted to stop by before the week starts to say hello goodbye.

Here is the basic deal, in addition to having both night classes this week:  Tuesday – 100 Test, 110 Quiz; Wednesday – Anatomy Test; Thursday – Anatomy Lab Test; Friday – Orgo Test.  Yikes!

Here’s what I am not worrying about this week –

  1. Getting up multiple, clever blog posts
  2. Scoring a 100% on all my exams
  3. Cooking gourmet meals for the husband and myself
  4. Running a marathon

Here’s what I am going to worry about this week –

  1. Posting once a day to give myself a routine
  2. Not failing my exams, and doing a job I’m proud of
  3. Helping the husband make sure we have some healthy food available
  4. Getting in at least 4 (small) work-outs before next Sunday

What aren’t you going to worry about this week?

Sick Spouse

Did everyone have a good weekend?  I hope so!  Today wasn’t really definitively good or bad for me.  I didn’t do anything fun and I still didn’t get as much work as I’d hoped done – Adam picked a hell of a weekend to get a cold and be needy – but I got enough done.  Plus I spent the whole day with the husband, and even when he is a whiney, snotty mess that still thrills me .

Breakfast was supposed to be a serving of Van’s waffles with 1T maple syrup, cinnamon, and sliced plum.

Looks good, no?  No!  I don’t know why I fail at breakfast lately but something about how I heated this up made it inedible.  I took three torturous bites and moved on.

I was planning on studying at The Spot today but it was inexplicably packed to the brim.  I took a very irritating walk up and down Elmwood and finally Adam and I decided to go study at Wegman’s.  We got salad bar for lunch and then sat in the cafe and worked.

[small bites of – curried chicken salad, chicken salad, cucumber salad, sesame and general’s chicken, lo mein, Asian green beans, wok seared veggies]

I was hungry the whole time we were there so when we left the store I bought a bag of honey mustard pretzels.

Inhaled.  I also ate ~a serving of the husband’s Divine Milk Chocolate and Hazelnut Bar, unphotographed.

On one hand I am irritated with myself for eating junky food all day (especially on a rest day).  But on the other hand I had another “do I need this?” moment that I’m proud of.  The plan all day had been to get pizza – buffalo chicken pizza with ranch, yum! – for dinner.  When I finished my work at 9:30 we were heading out to get it when I realized: I ate 400calories of pretzels and 200calories worth of chocolate; I wasn’t hungry, even though pizza sounded good!  Since pizza does not = fruits and veggies I should eat because they provide nutrients, I decided to skip it.

How often do you eat pizza?  Is it one of your favorites, or just another meal?  I always thought I wasn’t that into pizza, but then we moved to Park Slope and lived next door to the best pizzeria on the planet.  We ate pizza 2-4x per week!  By the time we moved it was actually embarrassing because we were in there so often 😉
