Epic Fail?

It took me so long to get going this morning (food blogs? guilty!) that I was actually hungry before I left.  I dealt with it by eating a hunk of sourdough flatbread.

HPIM4250

I don’t care what it was supposed to be like, this was good!  I’m going to try to do it right next week, but I will greatly enjoy eating this with the dip I’m planning on making tomorrow.

For actual lunch I ordered a sandwich from the coffee shop below my apartment where I went to study.

HPIM4253

It came with three bean salad, which I disliked and only took one bite of, but the sandwich I adored.

HPIM4252

Roasted eggplant with hot sauce and blue cheese on a whole wheat bun.  This is a combo I will be recreating!

I studied for about 1.5hours before I realized I was too distracted and should go home.  On the way out I bought a cupcake.  Homemade chocolate cupcake with real strawberry icing, who in their right mind would pass that by?  It was pretty delish, but I left a fair amount of base, because I don’t really like cake (which makes it even stranger that I keep ordering cupcakes!)

HPIM4256

It’s possible my attitude of whimsy seeped into the rest of my day and I watched Bones reruns instead of studying…..

Around 4 I got gussied and headed out to meet Adam and another med school event, at Steer, this one to celebrate the first full week of school.  I drank a Rolling Rock,

HPIM4257

and a had a small plate of veggies and pizza.

HPIM4258

We stayed ’till around 7:30 then ran home so Adam could get a sandwich before we went to our next meet-up.  I grabbed a PB Gnu bar to eat in the car.

HPIM4259

But was very underwhelmed and ended up giving half of it to Adam.

We got to Pearl Street Brewery around 8:30 where we had a very fun meet-up.

HPIM4266

Sarah is in town with one of her best friends because her friend is getting married and her sister who lives in Buffalo is making the wedding cake.  Confused?  Everyone was really nice and funny and it was great getting to catch up with Sarah.

I ordered an Oatmeal Irish Stout,

HPIM4260

but everyone else was drinking something called “The Widow Maker.”

HPIM4261

For eats I got an Fresh Apple and Pear Salad.

HPIM4263

Apples and pears sauteed in rum and brown sugar served over mixed greens and topped with toasted pecans and fresh goat cheese; with brown sugar rum vinaigrette.

HPIM4264

It was frickin fabulous!  I ate about 3/4 of it and only didn’t take the rest home because I knew it’d get soggy.  P.S. That brown rectangle is one of Sarah’s portabella mushrooms cooked in beer.

A med school friend came by and met us so after dinner we stayed for a game of pool, and ended up leaving around 11:30.  And now it is way too late and time for bed, toodles!

The Anti-Drogging Post

Don’t misunderstand the title, I am in no way anti-drogging (drunk blogging); I just didn’t think drogging a recap of the whole day was my best idea.  I’ll start from the beginning, more than 24hours ago!

I didn’t have to volunteer on Friday so I slept in and lazed around reading magazines, which was glorious.  I lazed a little too long, however, and ended up having to rush to get dressed with Adam got home.  The reason his parents came up to visit is that he was receiving his white coat and taking his Hippocratic oath in a special ceremony.

HPIM4192

In the car on the way there I ate some free samples.  Gnu bar in Lemon Ginger, which was interesting.

HPIM4189

And Sahle Snacks Glazed Nuts in Almond PB&J which was fantasmic.

HPIM4190

Between the two items I ate about 250calories, which managed to fill me up for the ceremony.  I am so proud of my husband!

HPIM4191

HPIM4194

Afterwards there was a mini buffet so I snagged a small plate of fruit, veggies, and cheese.

HPIM4196

The ceremony ended around 5 and we drove back to a spot near our house to have dinner with his parents and their friend.  We were at a bar directly below our apartment that I think we will be visiting often!  I got a Hienekin Light to drink.

HPIM4197

And for dinner I ordered a Turkey Melt; roasted turkey, jack cheese, tomato, sourdough bread, russian dressing.

HPIM4198

It came with sweet potato fries (which were fabulous, but nowhere near as good as the baked ones we make at home) which I shared with Adam, and I also split his side salad.

HPIM4199

When we said goodbye to the parents around 7 we drove over to another med student’s house for a party!  Over the course of the evening I ate a cracker with Brie,

HPIM4200

and a sweet pepper stuffed with cheese.

HPIM4201

I also had two (largish) CokeZeros with Jack Daniels that I didn’t photograph.  It was a really fun evening and we somehow managed to not get home until after 2am!

Today we have some fun and practical things planned, and I’ve got to scadadle!

When was the last time you were proud of a loved one?  I am so excited for my husband that he is on his way to being a doctor.  I was proud of him for the two years he volunteered teaching too, but his excitement makes this all the sweeter.

Argh to Ahhhh

What a long and exciting day it has been!  I’ll start from the begining…..we were up too late after the semi-formal and I was not feeling it this morning.  I felt so gross I almost called in from volunteering, but I knew it was more about being tired than being contagious.  I told myself that I would suck it up and go and planned a reward/major sugar and caffeine rush for breakfast.  I ate a Cliff Mojo Trail Mix Bar on the walk to the hospital.

HPIM4166

Adam had been driving me but it’s only about a half a mile a way.  I should have walked further though, because when I got to the hospital I ordered this –

HPIM4167

cookies and cream javalanche (i.e. frozen coffee).  Oh man, I felt like a 24year old and not a college kid because this made me so sick!  I got about 3/4 through before I threw in the towel but I spent the first hour or so of volunteering wishing I had somewhere quiet to puke!

Volunteeringwas much better today than it had been, because I finally had a bit more to do.  I spent several hours making catheter packs and the repetition was very cathartic.  There was some sadness and hubbub because a DNRpatient coded but getting to see all the UB med students rush in the room got me so excited about my husband 🙂

For lunch I let my uber unhealthy breakfast guide me away from pizza and toward the sandwich counter.

HPIM4168

Sliced turkey with spring mix lettuce, sun dried tomatoes, and chipotle sauce on pumpernickel bread.

When I got home I found a very exciting package, and a review is to come.

HPIM4169

I also had to go to the post office to pick up more excitement from my parents.

HPIM4170

(Among other things) they were in San Francisco last weekend and they sent me all of these goodies they bought along the way.  I also got an Amazon order with two books my mom had bought me for my birthday that were on hold.

HPIM4171

Right now my “to read” bookshelf is packed 🙂

As soon as we got home from the post office we had visitors!  Adam’s mom and dad came up for his white coat ceremony tomorrow and they are staying with their friend Peg in Warsaw.  The three of them drove over tonight to meet us for dinner.  We hung out and showed them our new digs before we walked across the street for dinner here –

HPIM4174

HPIM4175

We tried Tempo, and Italian spot on our block, and looooooved it.  We sat on the patio which was gorgeous.

HPIM4179

It came up that I had a food blogand we ended up gettingto meet the chef!  If that wasn’t exciting enough he sent out an extra course for us to sample.  All in all the service was impeccableand the experience was amazing.

I nused a glass of riesling, Richter Porter, Germany, throughout dinner that I adored.

HPIM4176

Soon after we were seated we were delivered an antipasto plate – eggplant tapenade, fresh feta, olives – and some fresh homemade foccacia.

HPIM4177

Here was my plate –

HPIM4178

For my first course I ordered the eggplant antipasto fried eggplant/goat cheese/olive tapenade/sun dried tomato vinaigrette/baby greens.

HPIM4180

How gorgeous is that?!?

HPIM4181

The eggplant was unbelievably fresh and the tanginess of the sauce complimented the dish wonderfully.  I ate it all except for a few shared bites.

After the appetizers the chef sent out three plates for our table to try.

HPIM4182

HPIM4183

HPIM4184

Respectively they were: a. gnocchi in a favabean sauce, beef carpaccio, and a zucchini stuffed with bacon risotto.

Since I don’t eat mammals there were parts I couldn’t eat, but I had small tastes of each –

HPIM4185

The gnocchi was a-maze-ing.  It was the best texture ever, chewy and airy all at the same time.  I realize the bacon was cooked into the the risotto but I said screw it and just sort of ate around it, it was creamy and smokey and great.  And my husband said the beef reminded him slightly of salmon and was delicious.  We just couldn’t get over how fresh everything tasted.

For my entree I ordered the Gnocchi Pomodoro housemade gnocchi/pomodoro sauce/fresh mozzarella.

HPIM4186

I couldn’t stop talking about how beautiful all of the dishes were.

HPIM4187

The gnocchiwas amazing, as before, and the best way to describe the pomodoro sauce is that it tasted made from scratch.  We were getting stuffed at this point and I still managed to eat all but a few bites, though I did peel away most of the cheese.

Stuffed, however, does not mean too stuffed for dessert!  My mother in law ordered a trio of sorbets, best she’d ever had she said, and Peg raved about the cannolli but I was too busy swooning to taste anybody else’s!

HPIM4188

Butter Pecan Gelato with biscotti and housemade fudge sauce.  Adam and I split this but if I hadn’t been so stuffed I probably would not have let him have any!  The gelato was great (again, it was just so clearly homemade) but nothing on this Earth is as good as that frickin’ fudge sauce.  The very best comparison I can make, which doesn’t even begin to do it justice, is that it reminded me of baking chocolate squares, if they were somehow the most amazing thing on Earth.

Adam actually commented after dinner how much he enjoyed watching me enjoy my food 🙂

We walked our guests to their car and since I was too close to exploding to sit back down we spent 20minutes taking a nice walk around our neighborhood.  I called my parents to thank them for the gifts and swooned about dinner all over again.  Now Adam is studying and I am going to do some blog business and then aim for a 10pm deadline.  Sweet dreams.

When was the last great meal you had?  Other than tonight’s amazingness, and the world’s best sandwiches at Serendipity, I would say this meal.

Mi Casa Es Su Casa

There was no post this morning because I still wasn’t hungry at breakfast time.  Instead I put away the laundry from last night, whoops!  Then we used the metro to head up to Adam’s campus.  I have to use the car to get to my classes so he will be taking the train most days.  He got some immunizations done and we got our parking passes.

At noon I was finally hungry so we tried out the Tim Horton’s across the street from campus.

HPIM4106

I know that this place is famous for coffee, but I was really wanting fountain diet coke!  I ordered a 6in whole wheat turkey sub.

HPIM4107

It was pretty so-so but the mustard was fabulous, it was really runny and sweet; does anyone know what kind this might have been?  I doubt we will be going back to Tim Horton’s much – we try not to eat a ton of fast food so if I’m going for it I’m going for Wendy’s! – but I did really like that they didn’t waste plastic.  Places with ‘for here plates’ always get points in my book.

Our meals came with doughnuts so I ate half of a maple glazed.

HPIM4108

I love maple (my mommy’s favorite flavor) so it was ok, but I still don’t see what all the fuss is about doughnuts.  Growing up on an island I don’t remember tasting one until college and I was thoroughly unimpressed.

After lunch we took the metro back home and then walked to the hospital so I could get my TB test cleared.  I also spoke to the office about shortening my hours, looking at the husband’s schedule 4 was a little late for us.  Now I will be going from 8-2, Monday – Thursday, for the next three weeks.

We have more errands to run (post office, Goodwill, Target), so I will leave you with pictures of the new apartment, enjoy!

Cold and Not So Hot

My volunteering meeting went well – I completed orientation and once my TB test gets cleared on Friday I will be ready to start.  I am trying to get in as many hours as possible before school starts so I will be going pretty much full-time for the next three weeks – Monday through Thursday from 8am to 4pm.

After volunteering I came home and met up with the husband for more local exploration.  We drove out to Erie and walked around the waterfront a little bit.

HPIM4052

We spotted a cute ice-cream stand and I bought a lemon ice.

HPIM4053

I ate about half before handing it off to Adam.

We did more house-fixing when we got home and then headed out for our first Buffalo run!  I ate a Stoneyfield YoKids Banilla yogurt to refuel first.

HPIM4054

We did 2miles around the neighborhood in 20minutes.  I am painfully out of shape, I can’t wait until 2miles don’t kick my butt any more!  I kept my heart rate monitor on through 10minutes of floor work (stretching, 100 abs reps, and 50 arms reps with my 5lb weights) and all total I burnt 344 calories.

When we were done we cooked our first Buffalo dinner!  We made cold avocado soup and sandwiches.

HPIM4056

We used our George Foreman to make the grilled cheese sandwiches, I used 2 slices of reduced fat colby-jack on mine.

HPIM4058

And the soup was a Rachael Ray magazine recipe which I will include for those of you who enjoy cold soup, but it didn’t really float our boats.

HPIM4057

No-Cook Avocado Bisque, serves 4

  • 2 large avocados (we ended up accidentally buying “Slimcados” which have 35% less fat and calories but tasted the same)
  • 2C buttermilk
  • 4 scallions, green and white parts sliced separately
  • grated peel and juice of one lime
  • 16 ice cubes
  • salt
  • 1lb tomatoes, coursely chopped (we used three plum tomatoes)
  1. Put 1 avocado, buttermilk, scallion whites, lime peel and 3/4 of lime juice in the blender.  Blend on low speed and then blend in ice cubes one by one until smooth.
  2. Meanwhile coarsely chop the remaining avocado and then combine with tomatoes, scallion greens, and the rest of the lime juice.
  3. Divide soup among 4 bowls and top with with guac.

We were excited to have leftovers for lunch but after tasting it we are less excited!  I ate about half of my bowl (but my grilled cheese was great!).

Now I’ve got to go because we are watching old episodes of “My So Called Life” that we Netflixed, night!

Do you like cold soup?  I had some kind of cold fruit soup a few years ago that I loved but now I’m not sure if I enjoy it.

Lunch Break

I’m making pretty good progress on my to-dos.  After the post office I got to Starbucks at 10:30 and studied until 12:30.  I drank a Grande Iced Americano with bit of skim milk while I worked.

HPIM3983

I decided to split my study session into two because I got distracted by a phone call from my mommy and my coffee was making me pretty jittery.

We decided that lunch out should be forgone in favor of using fridge food because we are packing our kitchen/dishes up tomorrow and that will be the end of that.  I managed to make a pretty exciting meal at home though.

HPIM3984

HPIM3985

This spicetastic sandwich is –

  • 2 slices toasted white (cheap) bread
  • 2 TJ’s Spicy Jalopeno Chicken Sausages
  • 1slice provolone cheese
  • smidge Stonewall Kitchen Hot Pepper Peach Preserves

This was hands down the best sandwich I’ve ever eaten!  I think it was the hot pepper peach, which I adore.  On the side I had a chocolate Amazing Grass packet with skim milk.

HPIM3986

I need to get back to business – I have some things to do online and then I’m heading to Starbucks for another 2 hours of studying.  Adam is meeting me around 6 for some fun this evening though!

What is your opinion on spice?  I say the more the better!  I don’t like the chemical taste of Chinese hot sauce but beyond that bring it on.  Jalopenos, chillis, red pepper flakes, buffalo sauce, are all good in my book.

Bye, Brooklyn Bloggers

Our mini-meet-up was a success; good food and great company!  Diana, Vani, Sarah, and I met up at Organic Heights, a vegan spot near the Bergen stop.

018

It was a cute little restaurant although the menu was also pretty little.  I am a Reuben (turkey Reubens only) fanatic so when I saw tempeh Reuben my order was obvious.

HPIM3976

I ate none of the salad and 95% of the sandwich.  It was de-lish-ous!  The bread was sourdough, which is always fantastic, and they got the tempeh chewy and wonderful in a way I never could.

To drink (my third bought drink of the day, I think I went a little over calorie/$ budget in liquids today) I got a Vita Coco.

HPIM3977

It was great getting to spend a final bit of time with that group of girls.  I have met some really wonderful people through this experience.  We sat after dinner and had a big chatfest which is exactly what I needed this stressful week.

Diana was a sweetheart and brought us all homemade, vegan, chocolate chip cookie/brownie bars.

HPIM3978

 HPIM3979

They were delicious.  They did not deter me, however, from getting suckered into Haagen Dazs which is across the street from where Adam and I had to go after dinner to deposit a birthday check from my grandma.  I got a mint chip dazzler.  I couldn’t take a picture due to drippage but think of the biggest sundae acceptable for a grown woman to eat and multiply it by 3!  I threw away half of it and it was still a ridiculous serving.

On a similar note, I think the thing I am most excited about in the move is shaking up my routines.  This year (and the last month especially due to move circumstances) we have done so little cooking.  I really do love my time in a kitchen.  When people play the ‘if you won the lottery….’ game with me the very first thing that pops into my head is culinary school.

Our exercise schedule, or lack thereof, could also use a good shaking.  I am 24, the amount of stiffness and lack of energy I currently have is unacceptable to me.  Even if I hadn’t recently discovered that I’m 10+lbs over where I want to be, I don’t like the way I feel.  Aside from long-term health benefits and looking good I like to be active because I enjoy the way I feel in my body when it is in shape.  The CPR instructor yesterday did a quick heart health speech and he made a very good point – this is the only body you have.

So now I’m going to try to take my only body and actually get it in bed a reasonable time!  Peace y’all.

What do you need to shake up?

P.S.  Who doesn’t want Chiobani????

“How to Save a Life”

Did anyone guess correctly?  I was at a CPR certification training!  Actually, we went to an advanced emergency professionals’ training so I am AED/CPR certified now.  Also exciting was that it finished earlier than scheduled at 3:30.

We got a late start this morning (more on that later*) so we had to rush to the American Red Cross center.  It was so hot outside that even speed walking felt like a major chore!  I was sweaty and sticky and my thighs hurt from all the Warriors in hot yoga yesterday!  I didn’t get a chance to eat breakfast but I felt myself getting a little sleepy so at the 10:30 break I bought this winning combo –

HPIM3957

I shared a few lifesavers with Adam but the sugar/caffeine combo was just what I needed.

When we broke for lunch Adam and I went to the deli next-door, the only food spot for blocks, and I got paninnis.  Mine was The Chipoltes grilled chicken, salsa, chipolte, avocado, swiss, lettuce, tomato, and mayo.

HPIM3960

It was pretty tasty but super duper spicy.  I ate 90% of the sandwich but left most of the chips.

The day consisted of lecture, video, practice; repeat for each topic.  This was my first class ever so while I knew the basics I found it very informative.  We had a 40question test before we were certified and I only missed 1 question (and the teacher said it was a stupid, poorly worded question)!

This evening we have to make a teensy grocery trip, make dinner, and even though I’m sore I would love some sort of mini work-out.  See you this evening!

*later – I realized I had yet to set yearly goals for 24, I like to do them on New Years and birthdays.  Here we go:

  1. Go to bed earlier…
  2. …and wake up earlier!
  3. Complete at least one of the prerequisites for the RD programs.
  4. Run more regularly…
  5. …and complete a half marathon!
  6. And finally, since I had to weigh myself to program my heart rate monitor and I practically fell off the scale in shock, lose 10pounds.

Are you CPR certified?  Why did you decided to take the course?

Do you set birthday goals too, just New Year’s ones, or none at all?
