Wonky WordPress

I’m blogging after midnight on a Friday and I haven’t gone out or done any drinking; what is wrong with this picture?!?!  [Actually, you can subtract 30ish minutes from this post time-stamp because WordPress was being redonkulous]

I got in bed before 10pm again yesterday and could still barely peel myself out of bed; who’s going to tell my body about next week’s all-nighters?!  I have 9am class on Friday so I did at least manage to eat before I left the house.

Brown Cow 0% Vanilla Greek Yogurt (A 99cent find I was quick pleased with, although the texture was a bit thin.) with a strawberry honey straw.

In between my 1st and 2nd class I worked on Orgo with a friend.  And had a minor breakdown when I realized how little I know.  I also drank a big cup of coffee with skim milk. :::imagine a cup of coffee here; as I said, WordPress is insane:::  And snacked on some celery I took home from food lab.

I went to Orgo (and felt my blood pressure rise just a bit more), and then Anatomy (little higher), and then got the most ridiculous e-mail ever about our lab homework for next week and sort of lost it.  I AM SO ANGRY!  I’ll leave it at that.

Adam actually met me at school to study and I wasted a good 45minutes spazzing out at him about next week.  And then I realized something crucial – complaining doesn’t change the situation.  So I got to work.  We stayed at school until 7:30, but I am done with my homework for Monday.  I ended up grabbing dinner from the food court when I realized I wouldn’t be escaping campus as soon as I’d planned.

A Crunchwrap Supreme, with chicken, from Taco Bell.

Actually, we left school at 7:30 so we could get to UPS before it closed.  Then we went back.  I had to pick up my gym bag and do my printing; we didn’t really leave school until 9:30.

When we got home we had to put some laundry in …… and then we went for a run.  It felt a little crazy, but I made a committment to get back into shape, so I’m going to do the damn thing.  ~2miles/21minutes.  I did a quick strength/stretch when we got home, and it felt good.

Bedtime, no?

When is the craziest time you’ve ever worked out?

It’s All About Your Perception

This morning there was an issue with the alarms – Adam actually slept through his first class! – so the big breakfast I had planned couldn’t happen.  We were in such a rush leaving the house it was not until I sat down in the car that I realized I hadn’t washed my face, brushed my teeth, or put on make-up!!!  Thank goodness I managed to grab this PB Cookie Lara Bar for breakfast.

When I got to Anatomy Lab it seemed like bad-news-bombs were just dropping all over the place –

  • we have a homework assignment, and my group’s is due even though the apparatus we were given was broken
  • I only scored a 75% on last week’s quiz
  • we now have a quiz next week (that brings my quiz/exam total for next week up to 5!)

But you know what?  My morning was better than their’s –

It’s all about perception; when things seem bad you’ve got to put them into perspective before you get upset.  By the way – yes, we did a frog lab; yes, it was awful.  I wasn’t bothered by the cats at all but Mr. Hops made me pretty sad.

In my break between labs I did some Orgo reading and ate lunch.  Plums (why did I buy so many of these?!),

and another turkey/Laughing Cow/Sandwich Thin.

Today’s Food Lab experiment was fat cookery.  My group had to prepare deep-fried Pakoda (Indian-style veggie tempura), pan-fried catfish, and fried bread (to experiment with the effects of the quality of the cooking oil).  The small room got pretty crazy with five groups frying, the smell was out of control!  I had to take three (small) bites of fried bread so I could write up my lab report and it was pretty nauseating.  I just took a tiny plate of food at the end.

Next week we are doing fruit, and I am much more excited to sample then!

I actually felt pretty sick just from that small amount of fried food, but I knew that the gym would make me feel better.  30minutes on the elliptical, random, level 6.  I kept my workout short because I was feeling awkward about just how bad I smelled!  My hair and skin are like smell sponges; when I worked at Cold Stone in high school the smell of waffle cones would waft off of me for days!

I took a shower as soon as I walked home (and scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed!).  Then Adam and I took a quick fountain diet soda walk and got started on dinner.  I was actually so hungry after our walk that I ate this mini bag of kettle korn while we cooked.

Dinner was three simple steps.  Prepare some quinoa.

Pan-steam eggplant and spinach.

Make a quick curry sauce out of 0% Plain Stonyfield, curry powder, garlic powder, onion powder, and brown sugar.

Serve and consume.

Adam thought this was going to be gross and he ended up pleasantly surprised, and I thought it would be wonderful and ended up underwhelmed.  It’s all about perception!

Have you ever been so tired (or rushed!) that you forgot to brush your teeth?

More of a Mountain than a Hump

It has been a day!  I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it on the blog yet, but I have 4 exams next week so things are a little crazy.  Additionally, I’ve picked up a short-term volunteering stint with the Dietetics department at a local hospital.  Anyways, today was a bit insane.

I got into bed with a magazine at 8pm last night, and was asleep by 9:30, but my 6:50 alarm still felt pretty harsh.  That’s 9hours of sleep!!!  I guess I really was exhausted yesterday.

I didn’t have time to make breakfast but I did grab a coffee when I got from the hospital.

Equal parts house roast, sweetened English toffee cappuccino, and 2% milk.  If they had skim milk this would be my perfect cup of coffee.

I worked typing up the policy binder and creating a handout for diabetics on the clear liquid diet from 8-11.  Fact – Diabetics on the clear liquid diet are not encouraged to have sugar-free drinks, but should in fact consume 200 grams of carbohydrate throughout the day.  I am going back to work again on Monday.  It’s too bad that I can’t shadow someone in the department, but I’m glad for any exposure I can get.

The husband dropped me off at the hospital in the morning, and the department head looked at me like I was crazy when I said I was going to walk to campus.  That decision was twofold though – parking at the hospital is terrible, and my walk served as a workout since I can’t go to the gym on Wednesdays.  Hospital –> campus is a little further than 2.5miles, and the weather was perfect for a walk!

I had a short break before my first class so I snacked on this serving of Honey Nut Cheerios [stolen from the buffet last weekend].

After Orgo and Anatomy were over I sat and completed my Lab work.  I’m halfway done with next week’s work and since I’ll be busy with tests that is very helpful.  I couldn’t bring a sandwich or anything because of how long I was out of the house, so I packed this single serving of Caramel Cashew Trail Mix to munch on.

Target, I love you; this stuff is so good!  I would never purchase a big bag though, because there is no way I could keep my hand out of it and one serving packs 320calories 😀

I also ate this Clif Fruit Twist [left out the house by Camile].

I arrived at lab at 5:40 and I didn’t leave until 9pm, yikes!  We were working with molecule models and it was very time intensive.  Our new TA starts every lab off with a lesson, and even though it keeps us longer, I love it because it’s another opportunity to learn the (difficult!) subject.

Adam came to get me at 9, we drove a friend from lab home, and then we went on a short walk to get him chocolate milk.  All of which = no time for dinner.  Two thumbs down!

Honestly, it’s so late that I’m not even hungry.  Normally I don’t think skipping meals is a good thing but I know that I’ve been having crazy hunger cycles and since I honored my hunger and ate a ton a few weeks ago it seems like a good idea to honor my lack of hunger and not force it now.  Everything will even out.

Do you ever force yourself to eat when you aren’t hungry?  What’s your reasoning?

P.S.  If you haven’t yet, I’d love it if you’d vote for me for Project Food Blog.

He’s Just Like Garfield

I did not get enough work done today!  I got behind from my “free” weekend last week and I’m still making work up, and I have 4 exams next week so things are feeling a little crazy.  But I did something so that feels good.  Progress, people!

This morning we sent the in-laws off with a hearty breakfast from Panos.

I ordered “The Fix,” which was Two eggs, scrambled with Feta, in a grilled Pita, served with homefries.  I made some adjustments – mozzarella subbed in for feta, plus broccoli and spinach.

I forgot to ask for no butter on my pita so I ended up taking a few sandwich bites and then eating the insides out.  I left a lot of my huge pile of hash browns as well.

I think we sent them off full!  I wrote my blog address down for my m-i-l so she might start stopping by (hi Barb!).

I spent the morning studying – and internet time killing 😦 – at home.  The last of the 7-layer bar was calling me.

I cut it up into little pieces for ease in eating without crumming on my Orgo book.

Around 3 the husband came home from the lab and we drove over to my campus so I could go to the gym.  My knees have been feeling off so I decided to do a nice low-impact treadmill run.

  • 5minute walking warm up
  • 20minutes jogging
  • 5minute walking cool down

I covered 2.53miles.  I finished with a super quick stretch, the gym was closing as I left!

Adam and I studied in the library for a couple of hours – although, again, I got distracted by the internet; gleesh!  I packed some plums and a Babybel Light to snack on.

I also opened this Turtle candy bar my in-laws brought me.

I ate 1.5 and gave the rest to the husband.

I should not have wasted any more time, but when we got home and Adam asked if I wanted to go for a walk my answer was “of course!”  We didn’t have any destination in mind so we ended up visiting the store kitties.

The “store kitties” are two cats that live in a clothing shop on Elmwood, the husband is obsessed with them.  They are ginormous; one has huge paws and is just a big cat, and the other is a total fatty.

Sidenote 1 – Adam and I have been talking for weeks about baking a lasagna just so we can take a picture of it with the fat cat.  Sidenote 2 – when we lived in Park Slope there was a store puppy, a french bulldog that visited a shop 13 blocks from our apartment.  We walked those 13 blocks at least 3 times a week so we could go in and be total dog creepers.

Dinner was a cinch when we got home because my m-i-l brought us all sorts of home cooked goodness.

Rosemary chicken (just to note, I only ate one of those two pieces, I don’t think I’m a fan of chicken thighs),

with roasted potatoes.

All we had to do was pan-steam some Red Russian Kale, finished off with a bit of sesame oil.

I dipped every component in ketchup 🙂

This meal felt very hardy.

Now I’m already late for my goal bedtime and I’ve still got to shower; I’m off!

Do you have any “store animals” in your neighborhood?

Holiday Dinner

Today was an auspicious date – National Cheeseburger Day.

Or was that Cheeburger?

Cheeburger, Cheeburger seemed like the perfect spot to celebrate such an event.  Adam and I were both a little underwhelmed by the food (and service!) quality this evening, but the menu process is a lot of fun and his parents had a really good time.

I ordered the turkey burger platter for dinner, mostly because I needed to get in some veggies in the form of a side salad.

I split with Adam and served him most of the cheese, 90% of the balsamic vinegar, and all of the croutons.  Here is what I ate –

I actually looked at the menu ahead of time this afternoon, and the husband was so proud when I ordered my milkshake without a choices anxiety attack.

That’s a half-serving shake, cinnamon bun and marshmallow flavored, with skim milk substituted in.

The burger toppings were a bit more of a struggle.  I looked like I was cramming for the SAT when the waitress came to the table, but I ended up putting together something good.  Here is the platter –

My turkey burger,

which came topped with….

cheddar cheese, peanut butter, and jalapenos!  The rest of the table couldn’t believe my order but I thought the combination was great.  The different kinds of saltiness worked together well and the creaminess of the pb kept the peppers from being too spicy.  I ate two bites with the bun before I scrapped it, but I finished every last bite of the turkey patty and toppings.

Along with the side salad the platter also came with fries, which came with a side of creamy horseradish sauce.

I planned on eating 1 or 2 and sharing the rest, but no one else wanted any and when the piece de resistance came to the table I knew I was beat.

Nothing beats french fries drenched in malt vinegar.  I ended up eating about 1/3 of them.  All in all, especially given the location, I think I kept things pretty healthy.  Could have been better, but could have been worse too.

By the way; I just did this –

Wish us luck!

Foodbuzz’s Project Food Blog Challenge # 1

Why do I want to be the next Foodbuzz Food Blog Star?  Because I love food!

I love learning about it, talking about it, tasting it, and making it.  When I go to a restaurant my husband knows better than to ask about my day, because I want to analyze everything on the menu.  Once I’ve painstakingly made a choice I spend the rest of the meal describing every flavor and texture on my plate and begging my dining companions to “just take one bite!”

I read every food magazine I can get my hands on and sometimes I reread cookbooks like I’m visiting an old friend.

I go over my weekly meal plans on the treadmill and my workouts fly by.  I’ve thought up so many recipes as I was falling asleep that now I keep a notebook at the head of my bed.

But a lot of people love food.  I think I deserve to be the next Food Blog Star because of my unique perspective.  I may not have it all figured out yet, but I try to keep a culinary balance of health and fun.  I read some blogs because they inspire me, but I think I am a blogger that readers can relate to.  I have my cake, and eat tofu too!

I recently returned to school to study to become a Registered Dietician; I want to be able to help people eat in a way that makes them feel good.  Some of my favorite dishes to prepare are big bowls of fresh veggies.

Anything loaded with fruit is a close second, especially caramelized pineapple!

I try to eat for my health; but you can’t be healthy if you’re not happy!  What a bleak world it would be without cupcakes.

And just try to take away my diet soda!

It’s all about balance.  I hope that my blog helps my reader to find their balance, and that’s why I’d like to be the next Food Blog Star.

Just Call Me Mrs. McDreamy

Tuesday, every other week, is my crazy day.  I have class from 8am – 7:40pm and I stay on campus the entire day!  During my late night yesterday I found time to pack my lunch (and write this post!).  I packed a turkey sandwich

(3 slices of honey roasted turkey, blue cheese Laughing Cow, whole wheat Sandwich Thin),

and a nice purple plum.

Golly, what an innovative sandwich!  I bet you guys were shocked to see that combo!  Thankfully I have a little something not so boring to make up for my predictawich.  Remember when Adam and I helped some friends out by acting in an orientation video for the medical school first years?  Yeah, it’s hilarious!

Our scene starts at 2:52, but the whole thing is pretty funny.

Home Improvement, A Giveaway

Don’t be looking for Tim Allen (or JTT as the case may be!),

this post is about my personal home improvements.  And I use the term “home improvement” both figuratively and literally here.  You will have an opportunity for some (literal) home improvement too; scroll on down to the bottom if you are looking for the giveaway.

I didn’t do any school work this weekend, but I certainly spent some time crying about it – I’d say there’s a lot of room for improvement there, don’t you think?!  Today is all about getting myself on the right track.  I started my morning at 7; I took a refreshing shower, I brewed a pot of coffee, and then I got down to business.  I have a ton to do still, but now I’ve made a dent and the list seems more manageable.

Sidenote – Target’s Archer Farms Cinnamon Vanilla Nut coffee is fabulous.

I’ve had two big cups throughout the morning, with skim milk and a cinnamon sugar sprinkle.

As proud as I am of my scholarly achievements, I’d say the biggest improvement of the day relates more to the shower.  We share a small deck with all of our neighbors.  Said deck is directly in front of our bathroom.  I’d say after almost 3 months of standing naked in front of the window to the shared deck it’s high time for a curtain!

My mother actually made the curtain for us (thanks lady!) and we love it.  The pattern totally reminds me of our wedding!

The nudity thing wasn’t really a problem for me – I spend a good 50% of my time at home naked and none of our other windows have curtains! – but I love how much nicer the bathroom feels.  A tiny little home update can make a whole room feel special and new, which is why I’ve paired up with CSN Stores again to offer you guys a $55 gift certificate!

You can upgrade to some modern bedding

You can pick some cuter (dachshund!) lighting –

You can spiff up a room with a piece of art you enjoy.  CSN stores recently offered me an opportunity to do a product review.  Adam and I decided to go the art route and choose some mobiles we adore.

The hedgehog family is in our living room and the elephants (we call them “L-a-FONTS”) are in the kitchen.  The sky is the limit!

Giveaway info and rules –

  • The $55 can be used on ANY product at ANY of the CSN sites
  • The gift certificate does not cover shipping (but many items include free shipping)
  • Only US residents are eligible (sorry!)
  • The giveaway runs until Thursday, 9/16
