Soup & Sandwich

I barely managed to skim my magazines – this months “Cooking Light” has about 8bazillion recipes that I want to make – before I fell straight into a long nap!  I’ve felt nauseous and just icky ever since yesterday.  However, when the husband came home and offered to make lunch I was more than ready!

I had a soup from to Amy’s to sample so I based the rest of my meal around that.

I eat 99.9% of my meals on the couch so I took advantage of eating at the table with my leg up by using the new placemats my mom gave me for Christmas –

Adam did a fabulous job on lunch – Jonagold apple slices,

grilled cheese with cheddar and pickle relish,

and Amy’s Organic Chunky Tomato Bisque.

Yums.  The portion shown is the whole can but I handed the bowl off to Adam half way.  It was a very tasty combo.

I’m not sure what the rest of the day will bring.  I would like to do some stretching and I have a very tricky shower ahead of me.  “See” you for dinner!

By the way, the contest winner was actually # 1 – Brandi, who writes and eats with her left hand but cuts and throws with her right!

an award and a giveaway, as promised

First, the lovely Dallas Celiac awarded me the Beautiful Blogger Award!  I met DC in San Fransisco and she is quite beautiful, so I feel honored!

Now I have to pass it to 7 more bloggers (note, I think pretty much 99% of bloggers are beautiful – 1% is handsome, I’m looking at you Nate! – so this was a challenge.  If you’ve already gotten this and I’m being repetitive I apologize).

  1. Peas and Thank You
  2. Bran Appetit
  3. Skinny Runner
  4. Meals and Moves
  5. Graduate Meghann
  6. Classroom Confessions
  7. Yes I Want Cake

And now 7 random, cool facts about me

  1. When I ran cross-country in high school I finished the first race last dead last and then puked all over myself.
  2. I started college as a communication major and was one credit from a minor when I switched to education (I also have a 2nd major in English).
  3. I really, really like stickers.  In fact, in high school, I wore at least three a day and walked around handing them out.
  4. (Given fact #3 this one is astonishing) I was popular in high school, and sometimes I used to wish I was picked on so I could have a character building experience.
  5. I think Dr. Seuss is a genius and taught several of his books in my 8th grade curriculum.
  6. I’m a major klutz, Adam is astonished by how often I hurt myself.
  7. I’m pretty bummed about my foot.  I think the best way to feel better is to make someone else smile, so I’m hosting a small giveaway below.

The small giveaway (please notice the emphasis on the word small) is sTiCkErS!  A few are cute company stickers from some fabulous brands and a few are fun foodie stickers from my sticker box.  To enter – leave a comment on this post telling me one random, cool fact about yourself.  I’ll pick one winner at 1pm today.

Feeling Kind

I’m feeling a bit better too!  The pain in my foot is very manageable – as long as I keep it raised.  Any sort of pressure feels like a red-hot nail.  To be honest, I would probably rather trade some pain for the ability to walk, but I’ll make the best of what I’ve got 🙂

I woke up with Adam at 7 today and got myself situated in the living room only to be dying of hunger the minute he left.  Thankfully I have some samples on the kitchen table so a quick hobble was all it took to get breakfast.  This KIND Fruit and Nuts in Yogurt Bar was delicious!

Alongside I tried the cocoa package my mom sent me home with.

I liked the nutritional stats and who doesn’t get excited about marshmallows?

Unfortunately it was a bit to sweet for me, I’ve still got 1/3 cup rotting next to the couch.

I’ve got a stack of magazines on the floor and there are some Bones reruns saved on my laptop, so that looks like the plan for today.  Ideally I will be able to get into the office to organize my school stuff so I can do some reading.  My hope is to get at least a week ahead in Chemistry before class starts next week.

FYI – There is an award and a giveaway in the next post so stay tuned!

Chocolate > Codeine

Thank you so much, everyone, for all the good luck wishes!  They must have worked because I’m actually feeling pretty good!  My last post must have been a bigger distraction than I thought because the pain tapered down to a livable level.  When Adam got home with my prescription I actually turned it down.  I know from experience that the pain will be worse tomorrow, so I’m enjoying my comfort for now.

A few people asked about my foot so I posted pictures at the bottom.  It’s bandaged, but bloody, so don’t scroll all the way down if you are quesy!

The Spanish Spaghetti was mostly for Adam and not a dish I really enjoy (although I will be eating it tomorrow), and I just couldn’t stand the thought of eating it for dinner.  I have some pain, I’m using food as a distraction here!  Thankfully Adam was able to run to the bar downstairs and get me take out.

French fries and a turkey sandwich with 1000 Island dressing.  It hit the spot.

I keep forgetting to order sandwiches without butter though!  When something is on a bun I just eat the middle so it doesn’t usually matter, but when I’m eating the whole thing I need to remember to modify.

I decided to go with dessert instead of drugs.

The Amano company sent me two chocolate bars to sample – Dos Rios and Guayas.

I doled out about 2/5 of each bar but the flavors were pretty intense and I ended up only eating half of what I put on the plate.

I have lots of schoolwork I hope to get done tomorrow so hopefully I’ll be able to fall asleep early tonight.  I hope everyone else’s work week got off to a good start!

What is your opinion on OTC medicines?  Do you take them on a case to case basis, adamantly oppose, or say the more the merrier?!?  I am a full supporter of conventional medicine but I do try to take things only when absolutely necessary.

Below this line is for Edward Cullen types only!  Look at your own risk!

Post-Surgery Distraction

Yikes!  The actual process wasn’t so bad (a very painful numbing shot, cauterizing, and cutting) but the aftermath is pretty horrendous.  I’m at about a 7-8 on the pain scale and we can’t pick up my codeine for another hour, so this post is basically a distraction attempt.

Let’s back up.  It’s my firm belief that one should look as pulled together as possible when going to the doctor.  When Adam had to go to the hospital earlier this year I actually stopped on the way out the door to put on mascara in case it got us better care!

I drank a Brooklyn Winter Ale on the ride to calm my nerves.

Did it work?  Hmmn, let’s look at this totally grown-up video Adam and I made in the parking lot – click here.

Leaving the office was a lot of hobbling and moaning on the other hand.  When we drove to Walgreens with my prescription and the guy said we couldn’t pick it up for 1.5hours I thought Adam was going to cry!  When we got home he tried to distract me with a homemade Bloody Mary.

Tomato juice, vodka, Siracha, olives/juice.  It’s only ok but I will probably keep sipping until my codeine shows up!

Superhusband is currently making the Spanish Spaghetti we have planned for dinner, but I myself am leaning pretty heavily towards nachos.  I’m not sure how with-it I’ll be this evening, but I am planning on a quick dinner post.

I was starting to cry when we got home but then I gave myself a reality check and snapped out of it.  There are many countries where this amount of pain is a daily occurence for people and they aren’t waiting for codeine because it’s never coming.  Not only am I fortunate enough to receive proper medical care in the first place, I have the option of modern pain relief.  I should be so lucky to be in pain from a wart removal.

What reality checks have you gotten lately?

That’s What HE Said

Shortly after my last post, I enjoyed one of these –

Usually I wouldn’t boast about a pre-10am diet soda, but what I’m really showing off is the straw.

My mom bought me these reusable straws, with their own pouch!, for Christmas.  Now I can be green while slurping my favorite chemicals!

I drink everything (water, milk, iced-coffe, soda) through a straw so this is a great area for me to look into reducing waste.  The straw didn’t feel too strange and I loved how cute it looked.  When I use regular straws I chew on the tips which the husband hates (wow, that got dirty in a hurry!) so maybe these will cure me of that habit.

Either way, the caffeine must have inspired genius because I had a great lunch.

I started with these Johnsonville Turkey and Cheddar Sausages.

I melted 1/2t Smart Balance Light over medium-high heat and then added 1/3 of a chopped green pepper and two chopped sausages to the pan.

Once everything was nice and browned I sprinkled on some Kernel Seasons Ranch seasoning.

Finally I topped the bowl with hot and chunky salsa.

Delish!  I really really liked the sausages, they had the best smokey flavor and the cheese gave a nice kick without being too goopy.

For dessert I had a 2% Pineapple Chiobani.

Buffalo Residents – Price Right on Elmwood currently has these for 99cents!

And now it’s off to the old chopping block, yikes!  I’ll be back for a tearful post this evening!

Lucky Rabbits’ Feet

Today is the big day – I’m having my (minor) foot surgery at 2:10 this afternoon!  Thank goodness Adam’s professors said he could miss the second half of class, I’m a nervous wreck!

I got up at 7 with the husband to shower and take care of any last standing to do’s around the house.  I even gussied up my toe nails so my feet could feel confident about their big day.

And I’m eating a *lucky breakfast.

18 Rabbits unveiled a new flavor Belle Bananas Foster of granola bars at Peet’s Tea and Coffee locations on January 1st.  I’m one of the *lucky bloggers who was sent a sample to review.

Delicious!  Carmelized banana is one of my favorite flavors and this indulgence did not disappoint.  Thankfully, for my nervous stomach, it wasn’t over the top sweet but just right.  If you live near a Peet’s Tea and Coffee be sure to snag one of these bad boys for breakfast today!

I’ll probably be back with a lunch post, but just in case, please wish me *luck this afternoon!

Oink?

Some people might view yesterday’s eats as motivation to get in some greens; I apparently saw it as a challenge.  Prereading Disclaimer – do NOT try this at home, you will gain 15lbs in less than a year and it will make you sad.  That said, eating crap and watching tv all day was fun.

I did leave the house for a little bit though –

Our friend Danielle (who we actually saw at the restaurant!) has been recommending Coles as a brunch spot for months.

Brunch = Bloody Mary.

And to eat I ordered the crab cake Benedict.

I ate about 2/3 of this before passing it off to Adam.  Overall the meal was good, but it just couldn’t compare to brunch in NYC 😦

Afterwards we drove to Anderson’s for froyo.

I got cinnamon with Heath pieces.  I only ate about half of this.  I’m not sure why I kept wasting food, but I do know I probably should have wasted my next two eats –

And then I rounded out the day with a disgusting amount of popcorn.

Divided into two bowls so I could sample two flavors of Kernel Seasons sprinkles.

Yuck, I feel gross.  I’m having foot surgery tomorrow so I don’t plan on moving any time soon but I could certainly eat a lot more cleanly this month!

Do you have a favorite brunch spot in your hometown?  Cole’s was ok but we need to keep looking.  I miss my Brooklyn brunches!
