My Achey Breaky Heart(Burn)

There was no dinner post yesterday because there was none, dinner that is.  In fact, this will be a quick-ish post because there’s been no dinner yet today either 🙂

Yesterday afternoon I picked up Adam and we went to the campus bookstore.

HPIM4301

I spent $292.48 on materials for one class!  I will not even discuss how angry that makes me, and instead will focus on how giddy I am over my new planner.

HPIM4302

While on campus we also went to the library to do some printing.  The husband got a Subway sandwich and I wanted a fountain diet coke so we got a meal with…..

HPIM4298

cookies!  I seriously had been telling Adam at least once a day for the past 1.5weeks how badly I was craving a cookie.  I got a chocolate chip m&m and a white chocolate macadamia and ate them both and was thrilled.  (Tina, I think you need to institute Cookie Mondays!)

Once we finally got home I grabbed a hunk of sourdough and went on a walk with Adam to the bank.

HPIM4300

I’m not sure if the bread was going bad or what, but I felt like I was getting acid reflux and by the time we got home I was beyond ill.  I crawled into bed at 9:30, whimpering.

This morning I slept in as late as possible, but knew I should go to volunteering.  I was late, exhausted, and nauseous, so I pulled out all the stops and got a Rockstar Juiced Energy + Guava from the back of the fridge.

HPIM4303

This was the ticket, I managed to hold it together through lunch!  That purple can brought back so many memories – on breaks in college I used to drink them at work back home.  I waitressed at a very busy bar (Duffy’s) with shifts that we super physical and 9+ hours long.  I loved getting a Rockstar as a reward.

For lunch, solid food seemed to be in order so I got a slice of plain pizza.

HPIM4304

The photo is pre-blotting.  I used 3napkins, so there was a visible difference.  Do you blot?  I don’t just blot, I rub!

After volunteering I walked to the coffee shop and got a small side salad to get in some greens.

HPIM4306

I studied for 2.5hours and I also had a Passionfruit Italian Soda while I worked.

HPIM4305

When I got home I discovered Adam had picked up a package from my parents.  Among other things my mom sent a HUGE stack of books and magazines,

HPIM4307

adorable notecard rings,

HPIM4309

and one of our favorite wedding gifts, a plate made by hand back home in St. Thomas.

HPIM4308

You could probably guess at my to-do’s for this evening –

  1. Fill in my new (pink) planner
  2. Feed my sourdough starter – this week I’d like to try an actual loaf of bread
  3. Eat some damn fruit
  4. Make dinner
  5. Find time to curl up with my new reading material

P.S. While I blogged I ate a Dr. Kracker Cheddar and Pumpkin Seed Crisp with onion dip.

HPIM4310

Do you ever get heart burn/acid reflux?  How do you deal?  I’m not a chronic sufferer, but I do get it more than most people I know.  Not from spicy foods, however.  I’ve yet to try Tums or anything but I think I probably should start.

Feels Like a Monday

On the walk to the hospital I ate 2/3 of a Gnu Chocolate Brownie Bar.

HPIM4294

It was a nice compliment to my 70’s style kiwi breakfast failure.  The flavor wasn’t my favorite, but it wasn’t bad either.

I also grabbed some Newman’s Own Organic mints.

HPIM4295

I’m still not sleeping very well and I’m exhausted, I popped 4 of these throughout the day to help me focus.

For lunch I got veggie chili, with cheddar and jalopenos, again.

HPIM4296

This is so yummy!  There are big pieces of corn and beans and the jalopenos lend the perfect kick.

On my way out of the hospital I was jingling with change so I stopped and put my nickles to good use on a Boylan’s Diet Black Cherry Soda.

HPIM4297

Drinking out of old-school glass bottles like this puts such a smile on my face 🙂

Now I’m going to go pick up Adam at school so we can run some errands.  I am hoping to get my books for Chemistry today so we will be heading to North Campus for the bookstore.  Also on my to-do list: eat some fruit!  I’ve noticed a very sad lack of it in my diet recently.

I’ll say goodbye with a giveaway recommendation – the fabulous Melissa is giving away Physique57 dvds.

What did you eat for lunch today?

Go Bare

Morning!  Thanks for ‘giving me the day off’ yesterday, it was busy busy busy with lots of mishaps so I needed a blog break.

This morning I tried this trio for breakfast –

HPIM4292

1 kiwi, chopped; Stoneyfield Fat Free Plain Yogurt; 1t Crofter’s Super Fruit Spread, in North America with blueberries and cranberries.

HPIM4293

So pretty!  The spread rocked my socks, but I’ve decided that fuzz-on kiwi skeeves me out too much; I ended up leaving about half the bowl.  I’m going to grab a small snack to eat on the walk to volunteering.  See you this afternoon.

What peels won’t you eat?  I don’t do bananas (obviously) but other than that I eat all fuzz-free skins.

Don’t Cry Over Chopped Onions

Wow, today has somehow been packed!  We slept in until 9:30 or so, due to a late night last night, and then got out and had husband/wife time.  I’ve missed Adam now that he is in school full-time!  When we were finally ready to take off our pjs we headed out for errands -can recycling, change making, grocery shopping – check.

Of course, Adam was able to convince me to get Wegman’s salad bar!

HPIM4267

I got tofu curried salad, with red and green peppers, nuts, and raisins

HPIM4268

and a small portion of chicken and broccoli, heavy on the broccoli.

HPIM4269

Adam and I split a Black Forest Berry Honest Tea to drink.

HPIM4270

We tried to shop quickly, but I got distracted by my hysterical laughter over this –

HPIM4272

🙂  I am super excited to be done with volunteering next week so I can buy fun veggies to make for lunches at home.

After we finished the errands Adam played Devil’s advocate again and convinced me to go watch “Inglorious Basterds.”  I was super hungry by the time we got to the theatre and I ate 90% of a thing of pretzel bites.

HPIM4273

When we got home Adam took a nap and it got later and later.  Suddenly it was 8:30 and we had tonsof baking to do.  For dinner we made a Rachael Ray recipe, Lazy Chicken.  It got majorly modified, for some good reasons – I wanted to use my farmers’ market tomatoes,

HPIM4275

and some bad reasons – this was our potato,

HPIM4276

so I decided it ended up being my own recipe.

HPIM4277

Here is a link.  I had only a small plate.

HPIM4278

It was good, but I was saving my self for –

HPIM4279

homemade french onion dip!  The recipe was from Delicious Dips by Diane Morgan so I can’t post it, but I highly recommend buying the book.  We shared a small bowl with toasted (homemade) sourdough bread.

HPIM4280

Yums.

We are watching “My So-Called Life” and snuggling and then it’s off to bed.  See you Sunday.

What have you made from scratch recently (ever)?

Epic Fail?

It took me so long to get going this morning (food blogs? guilty!) that I was actually hungry before I left.  I dealt with it by eating a hunk of sourdough flatbread.

HPIM4250

I don’t care what it was supposed to be like, this was good!  I’m going to try to do it right next week, but I will greatly enjoy eating this with the dip I’m planning on making tomorrow.

For actual lunch I ordered a sandwich from the coffee shop below my apartment where I went to study.

HPIM4253

It came with three bean salad, which I disliked and only took one bite of, but the sandwich I adored.

HPIM4252

Roasted eggplant with hot sauce and blue cheese on a whole wheat bun.  This is a combo I will be recreating!

I studied for about 1.5hours before I realized I was too distracted and should go home.  On the way out I bought a cupcake.  Homemade chocolate cupcake with real strawberry icing, who in their right mind would pass that by?  It was pretty delish, but I left a fair amount of base, because I don’t really like cake (which makes it even stranger that I keep ordering cupcakes!)

HPIM4256

It’s possible my attitude of whimsy seeped into the rest of my day and I watched Bones reruns instead of studying…..

Around 4 I got gussied and headed out to meet Adam and another med school event, at Steer, this one to celebrate the first full week of school.  I drank a Rolling Rock,

HPIM4257

and a had a small plate of veggies and pizza.

HPIM4258

We stayed ’till around 7:30 then ran home so Adam could get a sandwich before we went to our next meet-up.  I grabbed a PB Gnu bar to eat in the car.

HPIM4259

But was very underwhelmed and ended up giving half of it to Adam.

We got to Pearl Street Brewery around 8:30 where we had a very fun meet-up.

HPIM4266

Sarah is in town with one of her best friends because her friend is getting married and her sister who lives in Buffalo is making the wedding cake.  Confused?  Everyone was really nice and funny and it was great getting to catch up with Sarah.

I ordered an Oatmeal Irish Stout,

HPIM4260

but everyone else was drinking something called “The Widow Maker.”

HPIM4261

For eats I got an Fresh Apple and Pear Salad.

HPIM4263

Apples and pears sauteed in rum and brown sugar served over mixed greens and topped with toasted pecans and fresh goat cheese; with brown sugar rum vinaigrette.

HPIM4264

It was frickin fabulous!  I ate about 3/4 of it and only didn’t take the rest home because I knew it’d get soggy.  P.S. That brown rectangle is one of Sarah’s portabella mushrooms cooked in beer.

A med school friend came by and met us so after dinner we stayed for a game of pool, and ended up leaving around 11:30.  And now it is way too late and time for bed, toodles!

Superfruit Squared

Good morning all!  I didn’t sleep very well last night but the encouraging comments from my fabulous readers at least had me in a better frame of mind 🙂

No amount of positivity, however, could save my baking skills.  Through a series of mistakes (I wrote them down and I think I can fix it next time) this was my sourdough “loaf.”

HPIM4243

It looks more like Naan!  I am going to try a hunk with lunch but I’m not holding my breath.

I moved past my bread failure, aware that I need to get ready for chemistry review, to make myself a super breakfast.

HPIM4249

HPIM4246

Stoneyfield Super fruit Fat Free Yogurt + Crofter’s Europe Superfruit Spread + 2 farmers’ market plums =

HPIM4248

Ahh.  I’m betting there was a pretty darn healthy level of antioxidants in this bowl.  I wasn’t all that impressed with the yogurt or the fruit (I think my plums aren’t quite ripe) but the spread beyond saved this bowl.  It was unbelievable.  Plus, when I got this sample in the mail I about died of happiness – every jar has a bear…holding a berry!

HPIM4247

I call my husband bear so we get pretty excited about them.  For example, did you meet Ulrick?

As soon as I’m presentable I am heading to the coffee shop downstairs to get my study on.  Be back this afternoon!

What is your nickname?  Adam calls me Mouse (or Mife, i.e. mouse + wife), my parents used to call me Bug, and most of my friends call me Wax.

p.s. today is Adam’s first final, think smart thoughts for him!

It is way later than planned and some of my to-do’s still are not done…..is it obvious I’m the wife of a med school student the day before his first final? 🙂

I decided to recreate the best smoothie ever, only better.

HPIM4237

Total success!  This was (approx) a 1/2C each of –

  • Goya frozen soursop pulp
  • Purely Decadent coconut milk Coconut ice-cream
  • So Delicious Unsweetened Coconut Milk
  • and a medium banana

The coconut made it even better, if that is even possible.  I took my smoothie on the go, along with Adam’s study sheet, and we took a long walk while I quizzed him.

I continued quizing once we got home, so I did quick and easy and ate this Lean Cuisine for dinner.

HPIM4241

HPIM4242

Delish, truly.  I topped it with a sprinkle of Parmesan but it would have been flavorful and yummy without it.

After *we* studied, I spent more time with the bread dough I think won’t work tomorrow and now I’ve got to shower and go to bed.  Sweet dreams.

If you didn’t already do it on OhSheGlows, please fill out an I Am poem here!
