Sex in the City, PeeYoo

Adam texted me just in time today to let me know he had to stay at the lab late so I did a quick turn-around and headed to the gym.  I did the elliptical for 20minutes, on random, level 6, then had a quick stretch before hopping in the shower and heading to pick him up.

Our fun activity was a movie date to see “Sex in the City 2,” so even though I was in a rush you know I took the opportunity to throw on a big necklace and headband!

If you’re wondering why that smile is more of a grimace, it might have something to do with this –

Dinner was consumed via movie snacks.

Baby carrots,

an entire cucumber, sliced, with salt,

2 servings of spice drops,

and I also split a small popcorn with the husband.

Perhaps not chock-full of nutrients but it was a lot of fun to eat.  I didn’t think the movie was quite as enjoyable though 😦  The fashion wasn’t as fun (harem pants, really?!?) and the Muslim traditions “humor” was forced and awkward.  I enjoyed the specific storylines about each couple but on a whole it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Did you see S&TC2 yet?  What’d you think?

    • The husband is kind of a lady about movies, he likes chick flicks more than I do! (but he’s very manly everywhere else!) 😀

  1. I haven’t seen the movie, but I don’t know what the writers/producers/everyone was thinking. A movie about privileged white women vacationing in the middle east? Dressed to the nines gossiping about menopause, completely oblivious to the strife around them? It was fun to watch the girls in their little idealized NYC bubble ten years ago, but the concept of this movie was in bad taste.

    • You realize these women were supposed to be vacationing in Abu Dhabi, right? Which, along with Dubai, might as well be the capital of excess. It’s sort of a mockery of all the extravagance.

      • I have to strongly disagree with you that the movie was meant to mock the extravagance. If any social commentary was intended I think that it was supposed to be about the tradition of female oppression (and IMHO that was done very poorly).

        • I really got the idea that the whole extravagance thing was tongue-in-cheek, especially the part about including the fact that Carrie’s “hotel butler” was from India and the fact that Muslim women were “The Real Housewives of Abu Dhabi.” I got the mocking female oppression thing, which I found kind of funny, but I know they were making fun of Abu Dhabi because Abu Dhabi wouldn’t let them film there (they had to go to Morocco because, according to Abu Dhabi, Sex and the City is all about “whores”). I don’t know, I thought the movie was a lot of fun.

          • Actually (and I have no idea if this was supposed to be a commentary on this or not) there really are butlers from other countries working at hotels in Abu Dhabi. They have very few rights and their visas were taken so they can’t go home. Now that tourism is suffering they are also basically not getting paid. I can’t find any of the articles but it’s a pretty heartbreaking situation. I agree with you though that to each their own, I’m sure a lot of people enjoyed the movie, it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

          • Oh no, I know that the importing of workers is a real situation (sadly) in Abu Dhabi. They do the same thing in Dubai, and when I visited, I was really appalled at how they treated these people. I didn’t know that now that the economy was suffering, they were being treated even more poorly. It’s very sad. I meant that SATC2 included it in the movie as like “HEY WORLD, Abu Dhabi is full of jerks,” kind of *wink wink nudge nudge* type thing.

However, you’re not in the minority. Most people I talked to hated/disliked this movie for similar reasons posted here or by you. I guess I’m just biased because I daydream about living the “Carrie Bradshaw” experience haha

            • Ha, that could be true, I hadn’t heard about the shooting issues. I like Carrie but I always wanted to be Charlotte or Miranda (never Samantha though!).

          • I always fancied myself a Carrie – Charlotte was way too nice for me to resemble her at all, and Miranda (while probably the most rational, level-headed character on the show) and I would just have a personality clash.

My sister idolizes Samantha, so there’s something to be worried about haha

  2. I’m up in the air about seeing it in the theater or waiting for it to come out on dvd. I heard it got horrible reviews though and none of my friends who’ve seen it have been crazy about it.

  3. haha, I am not a huge Sex in the City fan though when I’m feeling blue an episode or two never hurts.

Still, wouldn’t see the movie. Harem pants are great…..if you weigh a hundred pounds and are taller than 5’8″. Not many people can say that.
