Cookie Conundrum

I got out of Biochem lab early today, which is a good thing because this afternoon is slated to be packed.  We are driving down to Virginia tomorrow to visit my in-laws, but I’ve also got two tests next week so it’s going to be a little crazy.

I took advantage of my extra-time and added a few blocks to my walk home so I could pick up a (much-needed) Cherry Coke Zero and a cup of coffee (to be iced tomorrow).  And then I saw the cookies.

I didn’t grow up eating storebought cookies.  Ever.  I’m pretty sure I’d never even tasted a cookie that wasn’t homebaked before high school.  Even now I’m confused by the grocery cookie store aisle – why would you buy something that would be a bazillion times better if you made it yourself??!?

I have several chocolate chip cookie recipes that are quick and fabulous.  But I don’t know how to make that magical (trans fat laden) cream filling.

I caved.

I’d love to tell you that this was a bad idea, that this wasn’t satisfying, that’d have been much better off with a real foods lunch.

Bull-shit.

Do you prefer storebought or homebaked cookies?  What is your favorite kind of storebought?

  1. ha, sometimes you just need some junk for your own sanity!

although, making those at home would be incredible, I think! yum.

homebaked is definitely always tastier, but I have a soft spot in my heart for those little mini chocolate covered donuts. i don’t let myself buy them very often because i have no control around them. so good!

  2. I heard one time how you make that – it was something like Crisco (or lard!) and sugar. I think we’d rather not know…

  3. I like ALL cookies. That filling looks great. I once made homemade Oreos, and the creamy filling was divine! I think it was just regular vanilla frosting, but it was still good!

  4. Ditto (your?) mom…it’s sweetened fat. In the case of Little Debbie, probably shortening mixed with corn syrup, emulsifiers, and flavorings. I don’t think it’s possible to make at home unless you have access to factory-style ingredients…not that it’s necessarily a bad thing. I’m not one of those who who thinks everything unnatural must be disgusting. Now I want an oatmeal cream pie.

  5. Sometimes the crappy food tastes the best. I also really like those store bought cookie ice cream sandwiches. I think Toll House makes them – but not sure. They’re about 2000 calories each, and oh so yummy. 🙂

    • You should try the Breyer’s cookie dough ice cream sandwiches! They only have 200 calories (and mostly natural ingredients, mostly) and they are sooooooo good.

    • Oooh, those all look good, but I don’t think they are close enough to the flavor. I was the *exact* consistency (which I think unfortunatly is a shortening thing).
