The Migration

I’m back!  It’s been very strange to go almost a week without blogging, I’m glad to get back to it 🙂

Physically, the move went very well.  We stayed on schedule, nobody got lost or in an accident, and we had a nice stay in a hotel room between our old and new homes.

Emotionally, not so much.  Y’all, when I saw our new apartment I sobbed.  We had to move in blind (we only saw pictures of another apartment in the building) and our apartment was not at all the floor plan we were promised.  Plus it was filthy.  Moving in/setting up took 4x longer than planned because we had to spend so much time cleaning.  Several things are broken and we heard from another tenant that the landlord doesn’t ever fix things.  We had to buy heavy duty cleaner and clean the oven twice but now it should finally be ready to use.

Bad first impressions or not, however, this is where we are going to be living for the next year so we are making the best of it.  Our last apartment was so small that it was pretty easy to find a way to make storage work.  Once things were cleaned up and we started to decorate things looked a whole lot nicer.  Dare I say I practically love the apartment now!  I’ll be posting pictures later this week.  Plus we love our neighborhood – right on our street there are several restaurants and bars, plus a fun hippie-ish coffee shop.  And the closest grocery store is Wegmans, which beyond rocked my socks when we went there last night.

During the move I did manage to register for school.  I only was able to get one class (Gen Chem I) but that is better than nothing.  And today I have a meeting to get set up for volunteering.

I don’t know whether it has been the stress, the busyness, or what but my appetite is gone.  I did the photo montage in my last post but realistically I ate about half of each of the dishes shown.  We’ve been doing hard work moving (my thighs hurt so bad from the stairs I hobbled for two days straight!) but hopefully once I get back to traditional exercise my hunger will return.

I’ll be back this evening with a normal post, later!

What was your worst moving/living experience?  How did you make the best of it?

  1. SO glad you are back and moved in. I have had some very weird stress reactions when I undergo major moves/changes like that one – I would blame your hunger loss on stress. Hang in there! I missed your eatventures!

  2. Awh, I’m sorry to hear about the apartment shock. I’m so happy though that you guys have managed to make the best of it and that you like it. As I said before, I went to school in Rochester and absolutely LOVE Wegmans. We used to call it Wegs and would go there at all hours of the day to get yummy treats. I’m jealous, I miss it! 🙂

    Glad to have you back!

  3. I can definitely relate to your apartment stress. I just moved as well and it’s been difficult so far. I feel like every day I have to add something to the list of things that need fixing, and my new place was just renovated! I guess it just goes to show that you never know what you’re going to get, regardless of how much or little you know about a place. But it sounds like things are going well and it’s great that you were able to get into the Chem class! I hope things continue to work out 🙂

  4. I’m so sorry to hear about the bad first impression with the apartment! Sounds like things are turning around though! 🙂
My worst move was actually the shortest. After sophomore year of college, when I was planning on staying in campus housing for the summer, I had to move my stuff across campus to another dorm. The new dorm had no elevator and my room was on the third floor! Plus, the only thing I had to help me move was a laundry bin on wheels! Annnd the whole thing had to happen while the graduation ceremony was happening in the middle of campus. Ugh. Luckily I had my best friend Deirdre there with me! We pigged out on junk food that night and laughed about the experience! 😛

  5. Good to know you’re settled in and that you love the apt, despite the first impression!

When I first moved to the U.S., my brother and I shared a living room at a tiny apt in Brooklyn, where we had our two beds…we separated the room by a curtain. We lived seconds from the subway, so our beds would shake every time one passed by…Thank God we’re out of THAT nightmare!
